X Has Been Blocked Due to “Illegal Content”: Govt Sources

Postby Jolthig » Tue Feb 27, 2024 2:00 pm

In a significant development, it has been revealed that X (formerly Twitter) has been blocked in Pakistan due to its failure to comply with local regulations.

Sources in the government told ProPakistani that X (formerly Twitter) did not adequately address the presence of illegal content, with only a fraction of flagged material being blocked.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had reportedly forwarded over 67,000 links to Twitter for blocking, but the platform only acted upon some of them. Furthermore, Twitter’s response to content deemed blasphemous was deemed insufficient by authorities.

This move follows repeated warnings to Twitter to adhere to Pakistani laws, with specific instructions to block content violating regulations.

PTA had already submitted a report to the Ministry of Information Technology regarding Twitter’s non-compliance, recommending strict measures including platform suspension and substantial fines.

The prolonged disruption of social media platform X in Pakistan has surpassed the ten-day mark, raising significant questions about the country’s access to digital communication and freedom of expression. X, which was blocked on February 17th, continues to remain inaccessible to users across Pakistan as of February 27th.

Amidst the disruption, social media users in Pakistan have turned to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) as a workaround to access X (Twitter). However, reports have emerged suggesting that government measures to block VPNs are impeding users’ ability to bypass the restrictions, intensifying frustrations among the online community.

The initial block on Twitter in Pakistan was prompted by allegations of electoral irregularities made by the former chief commissioner of Rawalpindi, Liaquat Ali Chatta, following the general elections held on February 8th.

In a bid to address the issue, the Sindh High Court (SHC) issued directives last Thursday, urging authorities to restore access to social media platform X and ensure uninterrupted service nationwide.

However, despite the court’s orders, implementation remains elusive, prolonging the period of restricted access for users and exacerbating concerns regarding digital rights.

Lol this is pretty funny. I guess X are a bunch of secret Qadiani agents, aren't they? But in all seriousness, this just shows the continued absurdity of the blasphemy laws of Pakistan. X is a social media platform where anything is going to spread. You can't stop it, and you most certainly cannot stop freedom of speech. Another reason for why the blasphemy laws should be repealed in that nation.

Well, I'd be careful saying they can't stop freedom of speech. Elmo is *very* manipulable when you mention the idea of banning them. But yeah no, they aren't going to get this one probably. They're small enough, and have such large complaints, for Elmo to ignore and get some backclaps for.

It certainly feels like Pakistan is teetering on the edge of revolt against the stranglehold of the military on the political process.

That I can't change it doesn't mean I find it any less stupid.

I used to always dislike Nationstates Forums because of how almost everyone is anti-Islam but at some point, I realized that we're all just goons behind some pixels and how hilarious this copium is. You enlightened men and women can hate religious 'nutjobs' and love separation of state and church all you want, but just do remember that you're simply pressing buttons on a keyboard. Thank you guys, for helping me truly open my eyes and also giving me good laughs.

If you'd said that before he started engaging in censorship to appease the Turkish and Indian governments I might have believed you.

Honestly to me it sounds like the blashpemy wasn't even the most important bit, it's mentioned as an "and also"

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had reportedly forwarded over 67,000 links to Twitter for blocking, but the platform only acted upon some of them. Furthermore, Twitter’s response to content deemed blasphemous was deemed insufficient by authorities.

Which makes me wonder what was in those 67,000 links.

The irony is blasphemy becomes even more trivial if God actually does exist. If I believed 100% unwaveringly in a truly omnipotent God who is to reward me with heaven and send the unbelievers to hell, to hear somebody blaspheme that God should cause me nothing but amusement. Because no matter how offensive they try to be, I just think to myself "hahaha you're gonna be so sorry when you burn."

The reason blasphemy offends people is precisely because they aren't sure that their God is real and on their side. Blasphemy can't offend somebody whose faith is unshakeable, it can only perturb those having second thoughts deep down.

The X-twitter is an advertising utility owned by a private corporation. They don't give a flying fuck about rights at the X-twitter. And they don't give a flying fuck about laws and regulations either, they're all into their ancap ultralib shit or they get fired by the Edgelord.
That's why they're facing issues everywhere in the world, ranging from shitholes like places with death for "blasphemy" or life imprisonment for lese majesté to places where the maximum penalty for the worst mass murderer currently alive is 21 years in a cell with a Playstation.
