dog discusion thread

Postby Labalia » Sat Feb 24, 2024 1:48 pm

this is the place to talk about dogs!!!

how many dogs do you have?

I have one a 1 year old black lab named Columbus (if you look at my name you can tell it was inspired by "lab" plus my nickname is "lab)

so uh yeah

my favorite breed of dog would half to be the black lab since they are very loyal and friendly but will bark if a strange car or person shows up.

my opinion on shock collars is that used correctly it is a great tool.

Currently none. I live in a tiny apartment and cannot give the dog the time it needs and deserves. When I move into a bigger place will probably get a small mutt from the shelter.

My opinion on shock collars is that they are abusive, no matter how they are used and create a fearful animal.

I have a cat  . I think dogs are good animals too, even through the prism of being a cat person. However, having a dog as a pet seems wrong to me, as a dog needs space and freedom, as it is a very active animal.

Shock collars should only be used in the rarest of rare circumstances, such as a police dog ruthlessly attacking people and defying instructions. Otherwise, there really is no need for one, and I will never personally invest in one.

Ditto, except I currently have no pets.
Always been a cat, and large breed dog person, but fifteen years of having to disown animals that I could not train to cattle, conflicts with packs of neighboring pets, two large packs of coyotes that cycle through the region and eat everything smaller than them, as well as threatening larger livestock, and a healthy population of red tail hawks, and various owls large enough to carry off small children, has accumulated a lot of pet heartbreak, despite my best efforts.
Mother nature is just a spiteful bitch, plain and simple.

Do not get the shock collar thing (I have never used a cattle prod), and I would feel compelled to remove one from an animal, and apply it to the owner in a fashion probably not envisioned by the manufacturer.

I have a 2 year old lab mix named Ria that I rescued from the shelter.

And she's a real smart girl, which I then realized I shouldn't had taught her how to open doors since she can literally open lever handled door on her own, which she continue to get into my brother room and steal his stuff haha

My grandmother had a short hair Dachshund when I was a kid, and we lived next to her. So, now that I'm in a house, I'd love to get one. The problem is, I'm gone for a significant amount of time each day, so it would probably bond more with my roommate unless I can get faster at work.

BTW, if I do get one, I want to call it Hummel.

We had a German Short Hair Retriever as a kid that was sweet and clever. Dad got him to pheasant hunt competitively in an effort to get his own dad to love him but grandpa died and dad it turned out wasn't super into hunting pheasants.

So we had a good natured dog who would present visitors to his back yard with a rock. If you threw the rock he'd get bummed figuring you rejected his present and would go find you a better rock.

He became subservient to the kitten we got immediately who grew up to rule the household. My parents still stand by the 'farm upstate' the dog went to with the feasibility going to there was no kennel that could hold him and the suburban life was clearly boring him to tears. And I did in fact run straight into a door knob with my eyeball, so sometimes the real thing happens.

That was it for use and dogs.

Decades later my mom would get a cockapoo from a breeder that had been or was being shutdown who also happened to be preggers. She kept momma and one of the pups went to my brother but while the dog clearly adored the hell out of my brother he was in the middle of a complete trainwreck of a relationship that made life too inconsistent for the little puppy so she returned to my mom who has both of them to this day.

The momma dog is a fuddy duddy who is suspicious of everyone and kinda racist (going theory is that she was in a black neighborhood chained up in the yard and may have been harassed by kids walking by...). The daughter appears to think she's about to go home with everyone she meets and is cool with it. Though the funniest trait is how the momma dog deals with other dogs...she'll beeline straight at them barking her head off then a foot from the usually much bigger dog she'll drop to the ground and yelp. Shoulda named the dog Karen. Actually, yeah...if there was ever a dog that would like to talk to the manager it'd be my mom's dog.

Also, cockapoo (cocker spaniel mixed with poodle, the slut of the dog breeds) is a silly name.

-Requires low maintenance
-Long, can scundre into tight spaces to hunt the enemy
-Beautiful design
-Timeless legacy and interesting history
-Can be given a lot of uses: hunting dog, police dog, lap toy, etc.
-Loyal, endures with you and won't abandon you
-More

i actuly use a shock coller for my dog we only shock him if he is extremely naughty and only on low levels he is actuly happy to have it on as he gets to run around with it and we use a beep when ever he is being good.

it works very well as we can now trust him off leash and he won't chase or kill are chickens any more.

Not sure why the dog needs to be punished because you can't train them properly.

A 2019 study carried out by the University of Lincoln found that electric shock collars compromised dog’s well-being, even when used by ‘professional’ e-collar trainers. They were also found to be no more effect than training using positive reinforcement methods.

Currently have one dog, named Bunia. She's a mixed-breed dog (although one of her parents must have been some sort of Terrier).

Earlier, I also had a dog, named Bella. She was also a mixed-breed dog, though she passed away somewhere in 2010.

TBF, a shock is more akin to a jab with an electric prod.
Electrocution is more akin to hardwiring a guy to a building circuit and leaving it on until the power company comes around when the bill is past due.
