Rebirth of a Lost Power [Attn. The Daeva and their Alts]

Postby The Grand Economic Consortium » Sat Feb 24, 2024 3:44 am

T'was a rainy morning. A veil of fog was covering the mighty skyscrapers of Grandeville. It's almost like a general feeling of idleness possesed the citizens of the metropolis. Each street was virtually empty, and those who wondered through its beautiful alleys believed that they were walking through a ghost town. At 500 meters above ground, in the Tower of Commerce, the seat of the executive branch of the government, Grand Consortian Magnus Montreneé was lazily sitting in his comfortable chair lined with velvet and finishing up writing an official communique directed to the royalists of Crete. In the past few days, tensions between Vaungard and TGEC had risen, with sanctions being imposed in hopes of damaging the communist nation's economy. Yet, in order to maintain some influence in the Aegean sea, relations had to be established with the royalists in Crete. The man finished writing up his communqiue, which read:

"Esteemed monarchy of Crete,
Due to recent escalations in tensions with the nation known as Vaungard, it has become our interest to establish formal relations with you. Since the civil war, your regime has become irrelevant. We wish to change the status quo and assist you in becoming a regional power. Vaungard took everything from you, they enslaved the people of the land. It is time for you to reclaim your glory as a powerful regime, which the communists will fear. Thus, we ask that we hold talks either in Crete or in TGEC, so that both our nations may have a prosperous and fruitful relationship in the future.

Magnus Montreneé,
Grand Consortian of the Grand Economic Consortium"

The telegram was short, but, perhaps, it would be succesful in establishing contact with the monarchy and bringing Crete to a heightened level of regional influence. Now, he only had to wait.

Kingdom of Vaungard, Crete

The kingdom had seen better days. Once a prosperous nation that spanned from the Aegean to Macedonia. And then? Communist revolution tore through the nation, ripping their holdings from them and killing most of the royal family and the nobility. They were reduced to the island of Crete, with barely anything to their name. True, due to the movement of the old elites to Crete they were able to industrialize rapidly, there was only so much one could do with one measly island. But the absolute worst of it? No one recognized their sovereignty! Even those damnable revolutionaries merely called them ‘a province in rebellion’ and not a sovereign state!

Constantine XIII Tarquin was shocked to find the telegram from the GEC. Shocked… and very excited. Perhaps there was hope for decency after all.

response from the Kingdom of Vaungard

Dear sir,

We absolutely agree with your assessment. The rebels have perverted the natural order! We would absolutely love to host diplomats in the Kingdom of Vaungard, reduced as it may be. As long as they can get past the embargo, we would be glad to speak to them. We eagerly await your reply.

Sincerely,
His majesty, King Constantine XIII Tarquin

In his dimly lit office, at 500 meters above the streets of Grandeville, the Grand Consortian read the monarch's telegram, analyzing each word and deciding on a response. He had just hit the jackpot. Rapidly, he began writing a response, which read:
"Your esteemed grace,
We agree to meeting you. I shall dispatch the Minister of external affairs, Mr. Charles Radnos, to meet with you in Crete. He will bypass the blockade in a submersible piloted by a Consortian Special Forces officer. We are most glad to establish contact with your nation,
With the highest of regards,
Magnus Montreneé, Grand Consortian of TGEC"

Soon after sending the telegram, he dialed the Minister of External affairs and told him about his task. He, along with his bodyguard, would be sent in an SWCS submersible to Crete in order to bypass the blockade. He was sure that the minister would be up to the task. After all, he was an ex-military officer. Thus, from the port of Grandeville, they set off towards the Mediteraneean. The vehicle crossed the Strait of Gibraltar, and, in a few hours, approached the blockade. They were 120 km south of Pelekanos. In order to avoid the blockade, the vehicle dived to 55 meters and maintained sonar silence, only moving forward at reduced speed to avoid detection by passive sonars. Slowly, the submersible approached the blockade, as the two men inside held their breath, hoping that the plan would work.

Off the coast of Crete

The embargo was rather imposing. A flotilla of 15 large Vaungardian Naval Union battleships float menacingly near the island. Crete, for its part is fully surrounded by a large wall, with anti ship gun emplacements mounted on it. More disturbingly, bodies in Vaungardian uniforms hang off the sides of the wall. It was a grisly sight, one that might throw doubt on the goodness of the kingdom in exile. As the sub passes over the ocean floor, they see the wreckage of ships, from battle ships to fishing boats litter the floor. They don’t seem to be detected. Then, suddenly, they hear a muffled roar and a flash of light shoots over the surface of the water from the Naval Union ships. There is an explosion, and the shattered remains of a Cretan fishing boat drift slowly down into the depths, passing mere inches next to the sub.

The two looked concerningly at the wreckages of the ships on the sea floor. Scars of an old war. They were interrupted by the sinking ship.

"That was too close for comfort" Yelled the minister of external affairs, scared that they might not get so lucky. "Increase speed, let's get to the coast ASAP"

"But sir, we will have a higher chance of being detected." Said the pilot, concerned

"Our altitude should compensate for the extra sound. 6 knots, now!" He said, demanding a higher speed

The pilot complied, as the sub greatly accelerated from 3 knots to 6, hoping to make it to coast as soon as possible in order to avoid an incident

VNUS Workers Pride, off the coast of Crete

“SIR! Contact below us!” An ensign yelled from his work station. “Damn smugglers. Almost got past us too.” The Captain says as he flicks the switch on his lighter, causing a small bright flame to appear on the ships bridge. “Release depth charges. Extra rations too who ever blows them to kingdom come.” He says as he lights his pipe, a puff of the noxious smoke filling the room. “Aye sir!” The bridge crew yell as the ship turns about and begins moving towards the sub. Depth charges are launched from the side, hoping to land a hit and blow the submarine to Davy jones locker.

The depth charge exploded 20 meters off the portside of the submersible, but it was close enough to give them a good scare.

"Sir, that was not another sinking ship. We've been detected. It was a depth charge." Said the pilot

"In that case screw the sonar silence. Let's try to make it to the coast ASAP. Overclock the engine, give us ay least two more knots. Hopefully we will make it there in one piece" The diplomat said, holding onto a handrail in the submersible

The small vehicles accelerated, its engine heating up more and more, as the sonar of the submersible went online. They hoped to make it to friendly waters as soon as possible, before they were blown up. In a few seconds, the ship accelerated to eight knots, rising to 30 meters so that they could move faster.

“Get em lads!” The Captain yelled as the ship sailed above the sub, dropping depth charges in the path of the sub. It was a race before the sub was safe behind the range of the Cretan anti ship guns. The Captain waved his ceremonial saber with vigor, egging his sailors on as the sub and the ship raced to the island. They were almost behind the range of the guns…

The second depth charge struck closer, damaging the hull on the port side, as the ship lost a knot of speed. A desperate decision was taken. Launching the limpet mines. They were explosives which floated upwards, towarss the bottom of the ships attacking them, and magnetically attach themselves too the hull. Two of the low-power explosives were launched, them beggining to float upwards, towards the submerged part of the ship above the sub. As for the vehicle itself, it sent a distress call directed at the Cretans, calling for support.

One of the limpets float up harmlessly, but the other detonates on the ship, shaking it and causing a hole to appear in its metal frame. “Captain, we are hit!” A sailor yells as alarms blare on the ship. “Damage report!” He yells. And then the Cretan anti ship guns mounted on the island fire, and the Workers Pride realize they have hit the very edge of their range. “Damn it all!” The Captain yells as the ships turns back towards the rest of the flotilla, as the Cretan high powered slugs slam harmlessly into the water. Their distress call is answered.

“Welcome to the Kingdom of Vaungard. Did you have a nice trip?”

"YES! God-damn yes. Best trip of my life. Good to be here. Do we have permission to dock?" He asked, continuing to laugh after the risky encounter

“Permission granted. His majesty looks forward to meeting you.” The soldier says over the radio.

Meanwhile,

The VNUS Workers Pride limped behind the range of the guns. The Captain was fuming. “I can’t believe those smugglers got past us! Call every agency with boots on Crete. The 19 are gonna wanna know who landed on the island.”

The diplomat and his bodyguard docked their submersible on a pier, and got out, relieved to finally see the Sun after 10 hours of underwater travel. Now, they had a job to do. They awaited to be greeted by a Vaungardian officialz hoping to begin the actual talks as soon as possible.

The sheer walls surrounding Crete greet them first, and there is also a rotting smell. And then they see the communist and Vaungardian soldiers hanging from yard arms mounted on the walls, the grisly sight is interrupted by a group of 10 soldiers. “Quickly now, behind the walls.” A Lieutenant says, gesturing for them to follow. “The revolutionaries like to take potshots at whoever they can see, staying out here is in unadvisable.”

"Got it" the bodyguard said, gesturning for the diplomat to follow him behind the walls. The two rushed to the cover of the fortifications, hoping that they were not spptted by the communist forces

They get behind a gate, and that when they hear a crack. One of the soldiers falls to the ground, an exit wound in his forehead. The rest of the soldiers quickly slam the gates close. A man in a slightly threadbare suit jogs up them, flanked by more soldiers. “Hey! Welcome to Crete, the last bastion of the legitimate Vaungardian government. I am Prime Minister Chloros. We are honored to have you here. Sorry about the… journey here, but those rebels are giving us hell. No doubt we have a plan to drive them back, though.” He says, laughing thinly. It is clear that the entire island is in denial that they have lost the revolution.

The city of Crete is somewhat cramped, although it does boast some impressive architecture. Soldiers walk the street, and anti communist posters are on every street corner. Billboards with the kings image, which make him look like a heroic figure standing on the tide of socialism.

"Mr. Chloros, it is a great pleasure to meet you. I am Charles Radnos, Minister of External Affairs, and this is my bodyguard, Sargeant Otis Manticore." He shakes the man's hand, looking around him at the walled city. "The situation looks really bad here. Do you have an active navy to repel the blockade" He asked, concerned about their military prepardness. He looked around the city, admiring the impressive builsings and analyzing the images of the king, clearly a trope in Vaungardian propaganda.

Chloros glances at him. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Radnos. You came by submarine, right? You should have passed our navy. It’s down there somewhere…” he says with a nervous laugh. “The commies sabotaged our great navy with their subterfuge and trickery. Luckily, we have our anti ship defenses. Nothing can past them!” He says with great enthusiasm. It is clearly the main hope of the Cretan. “Err… anyways, heh, the king has prepared a banquet for you, in the palace…” he says. Several beggars are seen in the distance, rattling cans and holding up signs written in Greek. A soldier cocks his rifle. “Oi! Clear out, commies!” He shouts at them, and they scatter back into the alley ways. The Prime Minister winces at the loud noise. “Uh, we have a car, if you will follow me please…”

"Hopefully, your coastal defence is as strong as you say. And, oh, is a banquet really necessary? I am just a minister." He asked nervously. While heading towards the car, he looked in a concerned manner at the beggars, terrified by the soldier threatening them. On his way, the man asks. "We would gladly provide financial assistance to fix your current...problems" He says, clearly referencing the beggars. The diplomat and his bodyguard get in the car, and the minister asks the Vaungardian official "What is the state of your military. Do you have an active air force? How are your land forces?" He asked, once again concerned for the royalist nation

“You’re the first diplomat we have had in a while, so his Majesty would like to pull out all the stops. As for financials, that won’t be necessary. You see, those were communist spies and sympathizers that have infiltrated us, instead of good productive citizens!” the prime minister says emphatically as the car begins driving down the streets. Military patrols are ubiquitous. “For our military, everyone is required to serve a tour in it unless there are certain health problems or other such factors. Airforce… uhh… we have some fighters, and his Majesties private jet. They are grounded mainly, though. The commies would shoot em down if they got too close to their infernal embargo.” He says.

Meanwhile, apartment across the street from the landing

Damian snuffed out his cigarette on the ash tray next to him and snapped a few quick photos from his high apartment of the proceedings. He picked up his encrypted phone. “Hey boss. This is RED-23, uh, I have eyes and pictures of those smugglers. They don’t look like smugglers, sir. There’s a suit and a soldier. I would peg ‘em as government. Understood, sir.” He says, and hangs up before lighting another cigarette.

"That is not good. How come the communists haven't bombed you to oblivion by now? No navy and no functional fighters. Do you at least have decent air defences?" He once again asked, concerned for the stability of the nation and unaware of the looming threat of R.E.D.s knowledge of their presence

The Prime Minister stutters for a second, trying to think of a response. “We have air defenses, yes. Uh, electronic countermeasures and all that. Crete is a fortress. Nothing gets in without our say so.” He says, sounding like he is trying to reassure himself. The car begins traveling up a hill, and a palace rises out of the dark night. Coated in gold and murals, with many soldiers patrolling around it.

Meanwhile,

“Hey, boss, how’s the missus? Yeah? That’s wonderful, tell her I said high. What? Yeah, uh, back on topic. They are entering the palace. I would say foreign government, probably cappies. I won’t be able to get in the palace, but I will keep tabs on the exit. Yeah, will do. Tell apartment block b-17 I said hi, yeah? Alright, will check in later boss.” Damien said from a phone box near the palace. He wasn’t actually using the phone, that was bugged, merely pretending to and using his encrypted comm instead.

"That's good to know. Have you ever considered building up your naval capabilities and trying to break the blockade? Or upgrading your coastal defences to have a longer range so that you can strike their ships?" He asked, trying to get more info about their situation

“We have no shipyards, they were destroyed by the rebels. And whenever we try to rebuild them, the damn infiltrators sabotage us. Just last week, the CEO of Crete arms was found with his head bashed in by a sledgehammer, left hanging by his feet above a factory floor. The revolutionaries have three intelligence ‘agencies’, if you can call them that. And all three of them want what we have.” He says, his voice cracking as the palace gates close behind them. Several brightly uniformed royal guards line up in front of the cars doors, saluting as the diplomats exit the car.

OOC: wrong account, but it’s still me so that’s alright :).

Heya! Just your ordinary ruthless pragmatic monarchy. We may be the lesser evil, but we are fancy and polite while doing it!

"Well that is horrible...it's clear that they have a lot of influence over your nation. But, that is why I came here. I need to begin talks with His Majesty as soon as possible. From my chat with you, I now understand thw urgency od your situation" He says, saluting the royal guards back
