The Founding of Badeat (PT OOC 1890)

Note: This Roleplay will serve to establish the history of the MT version of Badeat, so what happens here will determine the demographics, culture and politics of the present.

The year is 1890 and the sparsely populated archipelago of Baddest is about to receive a wave of new arrivals over a thousand years after the first inhabitants arrived. So far, Badeat's distance from industrialized nations has preserved it's isolation, despite it's rich soil and mild temperate climate making it an attractive place to settle. However, in the age of high imperialism, the world is getting smaller. Already, Badeat's distant neighbors have fallen into foreign spheres of influence. Developments on the world stage mean now that Badeat may be both a strategic location for a military base, and a useful entrepot. Furthermore, citizens of overcrowded industrial nations long for wide open spaces, and their leaders for the prestige of colonies.

This RP will be character driven and involve the first wave of settlers. The official status of the archipelago is as a open land, and settlers from every country are allowed to come, but this will not be sustainable. However, first we will start with the settlers. You can send whole groups of settlers, but only need to fill out the details for characters.

Character Name: Jiafei Lyn
Character Description: Image (Jiafei's appearance)

Personality-wise:
  • Perfectionist
  • Hardworking
  • Introverted
  • Vain, shallow (generally appearance-obsessed)
  • Cheery, hyper, giggly
Goals as a settler: Spiritual-guide
Motivation in Life: Trying to spread Happiness to as many people and places as possible.
Home Nation (Name and Description): Xiaote'eng, a Honghainese client-state (because i didn't want her to be exactly from Honghai but it is in my lore that Honghai has client states)

Xiao'te'eng is pretty coastal, hot and sunny (think something like California) though bountiful with vegetation.

Good afternoon, Badeat,
this sounds like a fun RP-idea. With your permission, I'd like to not only have a small community of Selkie migrate to Badeat, about fifty or so people (or a small ship), but also to play a family out of this group. If that is too much for you, I'd be willing to settle for just the family.
In either of those cases, they'd bring livestock and especially horses along, becoming the foundation of what would become a Selkie-Community abroad.
Ironically, times are also interesting for what would become the Free Lands of the Selkie...

Please, tell me what you think!

mfg,
Selks
I play PT, MT and a bit FT. I am into character-RPs.
My people are called the Selkie, the nation is usually called the Free Lands in MT-settings. Thanks.

Pretty good, but I have a few questions:

Does spiritual guide mean that she is a sort of missionary, or is she traveling with a group?
Can you describe Xiao'te'eng politically, culturally and economically?
The character picture doesn't look very 1890s, which is okay. The clothes are technologically plausible, but it makes me want to ask if that is intentional?

No problem.
As such, if you allow, of the Aerach-Group, named after their ship, this is the Lonaithoir-Family, a family of shepherds and small, subsistence farmers from the Silver Mountains:

Character Name:
Fiona Lonaithoir of the Tribe of Laois.
Character Description:
    Will be given later.
Goals as a settler:
To find a new life for herself and her family, free of poverty and hunger.
Motivation in Life:
    Her Family.

Character Name:
Raidri Lonaithoir of the Tribe of Laois.
Character Description:
    Will be given later.
Goals as a settler:
Similarly to his wife, he wants to find a new, happier life for his family. He is well aware, that there will be toils and hardships, but he is prepared for it.
Motivation in Life:
    His family.

Character Name:
Fintan Lonaithoir of the Tribe of Laois.
Character Description:
    Will be given later.
Goals as a settler:
That new life his parents spoke of... he wants in on that. And if a pretty or two would fancy him, he would not mind either.
Motivation in Life:
He is a farmer boy. He has great dreams of arable land, he has his muscles and he has his youth. Nothing, in his mind, could possibly go wrong.

Character Name:
Kiana Lonaithoir of the Tribe of Laois.
Character Description:
    Will be given later.
Goals as a settler:
Stand on her own two feet.
Motivation in Life:
Kiana, only a year younger then her older brother, has done anything possible to get a bit of food for her family during the famine back home, including, for a year, being a provider for additional services in an inn two villages over - in other words, she has been a prostitute.
Her main motivation right now is to flee from that. Everything else, including her brother's big dreams and her parents' new life, are just fancy bonuses.

Character Name:
Nora Lonaithoir of the Tribe of Laois.
Character Description:
    Will be given later.
Goals as a settler:
Nora is at the beginning of her teens. Understanding what her Big Sis did for her and her family, and the pain it caused her, she is filled by one important resolve: Being useful.
Motivation in Life:
Her will to be useful, especially to her sister.

Character Name:
Meave Lonaithoir of the Tribe of Laois.
Character Description:
    Will be given later.
Goals as a settler:
Not much yet, really, seeing that she is a two year old kid.
Motivation in Life:
    See above.

Home Nation (Name and Description):
The Lands of the Selkie, around the end of the 19th century, are less of a nation and more an argument - splintered into the territories of mighty cities and towns, and those cities and towns that would like to be mighty, as well as the almost feudal landholdings existing since antiquity, the country is generously described as backwards.
The Selkie are very agrarian people. Cattle-herders, farmers and shepherds, with the only traces of industry found in the big cities and along the rail lines. Born in their mother's beds, but born for the saddle, as the proverb goes, they offer themselves as mercenaries, if the fancy strikes the youth, or they use their expertise in shipbuilding to their advantage.
Generally, however, they are peaceful people. They love sitting together with a good whiskey and they love song and dance and bring both whereever they go...
...especially when they flee famine, like the Aerach-Group does.
Size of group:
    46 people, 8 horses, 12 sheep, 20 chickens.

You will note, that I have not filled out the part about their descriptions. That is intentional. I have a Wiki and I would like to use images for them, as the Wiki would give me the option to do so.
I will post again here when I have finished the family's pages rudimentary setup.
I play PT, MT and a bit FT. I am into character-RPs.

Spiritual-guide, as in, Jiafei is a guru. She is travelling alone though.

Xiao'te'eng, much like Honghai herself, is a quasi-monarchist state (meaning it is not really/totally what one'd consider to be Monarchist but in some ways, is close), culturally, they had lost their original culture because of Honghainese Influence. Xiao'te'eng took on more cultural similarities to the Heavenly State herself though that wasn't because of any intention on Honghai's part - only that as Honghainese people themselves moved there and as they'd had kids, they were more predisposed to bring out Honghainese culture as opposed to Xiaoteengese culture.

Economically, Xiao'te'eng is a free market (or what'd probably be considered Free Market circa 1880s-90s)

And, it was intentional for Jiafei to look like that/me to use that picture. it is moreso Honghainese Art rubbing off on Xiao'te'eng.

Using the grid on the map, follow 30° N x 10°W there is a small island. Go directly east from there till you get to a big island. There is a natural harbour there, a river for fresh water and forest and meadows nearby.

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring with a Mormon-esque religious community looking for a new home:

Character Name: Elijah Miller
Character Description: Elijah is the leader of the New Covenant Church, a sect which splintered off from mainstream Mareyland Christianity (which is similar to IRL Christadelphianism). He is a tall, wiry man with fiery eyes and a long beard that has turned gray. Elijah began preaching his doctrines following a personal crisis of faith, and attracted a substantial following. However, the eclectic practices of his church led to conflict with those outside of his "flock."
Goals as a settler: Lead his followers to a new home where they can practice their religion without persecution
Motivation in Life: Live faithful to the dictates of his religion and his conscience

I will work up some other characters if this idea meets with your approval

Home Nation (Name and Description): The Republic of Mareyland declares itself a land of liberty, but that freedom has its limits. Those who are not white men, who lack property, or who do not follow the mainstream religion, often find themselves the subjects of discrimination both legal and informal. Those who deviate from the norm in especially visible ways, such as the New Covenant Church, are often targeted by violent mobs.

Application rejected. The character description is not a description. It is a goal, but it doesn't really fit to the scenario, as the world has already been circumnavigated in 1890. You are free to reapply.

Do you want us to post just the arrival on the island, or is it acceptable for our introductory post to time-skip ahead a few months, to get the basic colony established, like basic houses built and fields cleared?

Let me clarify: should our first post end at “and the ship arrived off the island and started to unload”? Or is it okay if we say “after a few weeks, the colonists had built some basic houses and started to clear fields for farming” in that same post?
