Navalny dies

Postby Tinhampton » Fri Feb 16, 2024 4:50 am

The Russian prison authorities have just said that Alexei Navalny - Vladimir Putin's most prominent critic - has died at the infamous Polar Wolf prison, where he had recently been moved. He suddenly lost consciousness earlier today after walking in the local area and was not able to be revived; we don't know the official cause of death.

(I know that Emotional Support Crocodile has posted about this in the Ukrainian War thread. I've made a new discussion thread because his reputation, and most of his civil society actions, long predate the ongoing conflict. The mods are welcome to merge this thread into that one if they believe that I do not have sufficient cause, with that said.)

What is your reaction to this news, and why? I personally do not think that this was a sudden or weather-related death: we all know how the Russian state attempted to poison him before his arrest. We also heard very few updates from him in the prison and many international observers expressed concern that they did not know what his living conditions there were like - they clearly must not have been particularly good ones.

Terrible news. Shows us only what kind of a country Russia has become... we all knew freedom and freedom expression have died in Russia, years ago.
But this, this is very suspicious. Very sad day for Russians who would like to become a free, open and democratic country. Very, very, sad day.

I'm torn as to whether Putin feels so weak in his position that he cannot tolerate even opposition from someone safely locked away, or if it is just a crude message to voters for the upcoming election.

Pretty sad, but hopefully it signals the end of Russia. It might seem like Putin is consolidating power, but he's doing so only because he's losing control. Hopefully it backfires and the Russian peoples finally break free.

I think its a win-win, Navalny gets to not spend his life in prison, and russian government gets 1 less western sellout to house.

Good question. Probably double.
Probably he feels very threatened... in Flemish we say: "een kat in het nauw, maakt rare sprongen", which means: someone who feels threatened will act very weird and will make weird decisions. And ofcourse a message to all feature persons daring to have another opinion than his.

Not the best politician and not the person to lead Russians (neither is Putin, not defending this fascist here). His premature death was most likely inevitable, be it from his irresponsible return to Russia or lynching by proletarian revolutionaries.

This may backfire on Putin and rally countries to support Ukraine.

Putin also murders opponents who don't return to Russia.

My sources within the prison told me that a guard was about to shoot him, but he was already found dead due to a heart attack. This was entirely a death of natural causes and Russia didn't do anything wrong.

You know Russia doesn't have death penalty? Putin often does terrible things, but he always tries to make them appear "legal", so he could have a "not illegal, therefore not wrong" point.

To be honest - this is his destiny, there was an oppositionist called Boris Nemtsov, he was killed on a bridge near the Kremlin, now Navalny is now, the question is who is next?

I mean, another political opponent of Putin conveniently dying shouldn't really shock anyone.

Russia does have the death penalty, but officially they've got a moratorium on actually using it.

It's a bit more complicated than that.

Russia does have a death penalty. However, a moratorium was placed on implementation in 1996 when Russia became a member of the Council of Europe. Russia was suspended from the Council in 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine, and then excluded before Moscow could withdraw. This means that Russia could end the moratorium on implementation of the death penalty if it chooses to, and some prominent political voices have indeed advocated for re-starting executions. However, for the time being Putin has chosen to keep the moratorium in place - perhaps because it offers a useful means to criticise the United States over its own use of the death penalty.
