The Space Discussion Thread

Postby Unogonduria » Sat Jan 20, 2024 6:08 am

Oh my...
I apologize to all of you that I am constantly creating "discussion threads" in the General Discussion Forum, but I just don't seem to find ones that are about the things I've created so far.

Anyways, welcome to the Space Discussion Thread!

This is the place to discuss all about the majestic cosmos and everything else space-related! I hope you do have a good time in here, as I personally think space is very interesting and there is a lot to talk about (in this thread).
Also, feel free to suggest polls about this discussion thread.

Enjoy!

The reality is that scientists don’t discover new planets. They were ejected into outer space by the Soviet government to trick the United States into funding a space race and therefore, spend less money on the military. It wasn’t until Jimmy Carter’s presidency when America realized we’ve been jiffed

Planetary science is probably a favorite of mine, partially from the bountiful crop of exoplanets we've been getting, especially over the past ten years.

A gas giant with a surface hotter than some K-type stars, a year shorter than two days which hugs a B-type (very hot) star, and titanium vapor in the atmosphere

Larger worlds bridging the gap between small gas giants and terrestrial planets in the fuzzy categories of super-Earth and gas dwarf, some possibly being waterworlds with much deeper oceans than worlds like Earth.

Potential carbon-rich planets with mantles of diamond.

A gas giant which rains molten glass sideways in 8700 kph winds.

Plus that gas giant which might have a Neptune-mass moon which is also a gas giant.

Of course Trappist-1 too, with its seven terrestrial planets, multiple potentially Earth-like, at least some orbiting closely enough to exhibit visible disks in the sky.

It's all very fascinating.

I mean cool and stuff. But apart from the obvious problem in building it, it would be unstable in the plane of its orbit & also tidal forces from the moon.

This is how we get interstellar exploration funded. We just tell DeBeers that there are diamonds out there that they don't control.

We should invest resources for space only into defence of atseroids and solar stuff and ufos. Nothing beyond that.

Well, it's a black telescope, and it has the National Geographic logo on one side of it. I think it came from around the Czech Republic, since there were none of the store that were from Bulgaria at the time. I will ask mom for more details on it, but all I can say is that it (telescope), along with another thing I bought from the online strore, cost more than 450 levs.

Why not? I think it'd be great to colonize Mars and the Moon, send astronauts to Europa and spacecraft to Titan and others; if I had the chance, I'd become a space paleontologist! But since there is no such thing yet, guess I'll resort to studying Earthly dinosaurs and others as such :(

Hooray for space! Finally, a chance for humanity to righteously expand and claim the universe as ours. Against the unknown alien species that may lurk there in the cosmos, humanity has the chance to stop its oppression amongst itself over arbitrary differences and instead focus on dominating other life forms like aliens! Space racism for the win! Though technically it isn't racist since aliens are not human.

Robots shouldn't have rights or citizenship;
Compromise on other non-human sapient entities is possible, with limitations, but not on these buckets of bolts. They should serve humanity and have absolutely no place in society other than as our servants. Think of the benefits of this. Plus, they would almost certainly overtake humanity if we gave them the chance, whether out of pure advanced abilities or malice, or worse, both. Think of humanity.

Anyways, I think life in the universe might be pretty common - aside from the obvious ones in our Solar System like the gas giants' moons Europa and Titan, I think it's possible for systems such as the close Alpha Centauri and the TRAPPIST-1 system to host life :)

The best way to describe a setup I've seen so far after seeing so many reddit posts griping about other people's setups

I got a telescope as an early Christmas present and have been using it to look at whatever planet was currently available to see whenever conditions were right. Jupiter and its moons have been cool, and so have Saturn's rings. Shame almost every day since then has been too damn cloudy or rainy to see more

Woah, what's this money thing? Sounds like a pretty radical invention.

And what's this about "Ufos" and "solar stuff". You might want to elaborate.
Yugoslavia's back baby...

How the hell did this happen?
Well...we don't actually know. Just sort of happened one day.
Is it a reunited Yugoslavia in the 21st century? Is a rebel colony world in the far future? Is it a race of cyborg neo-life at war with any assimilating organisms they come across in the far far future? Who knows, who cares?
New Yugoslavia just is.

Us never leaving Earth is deliberately choosing to die a preventable early death, considering that it reduces our maximum achievable lifespan to "passively waiting for the Sun to boil us alive".

Considering that life started practically the moment Earth became habitable but intelligent spacefaring life took over four billion years to evolve, I wouldn't be surprised if very simple life is extremely common throughout the universe while intelligence is incredibly rare.

Because of that, intelligence probably would also tend to evolve on more longer-lived worlds orbiting K-type and maybe M-type stars which last for tens of billions of years and provide more time for that to happen, so we might instead see most intelligence developing in the far future.

Shoot typo. By solar stuff I mean things like solar flares. By UFOs I mean unidentified flying objects. I don't get what needs elaboration on UFOs.

There's no need to worry. The sun won't boil us alive any time soon. And plus, we won't be in this mortal realm long enough for that to happen. Plus, combatting human caused global warming here in Earth is a much better solution to screwing up another planet.

Deliberately creating an arbitrary limit for us is absolutely a reason to worry. Restricting ourselves to Earth makes fixing the planet more difficult to do.
Floofybit wrote:The sun won't boil us alive any time soon.

Never too early to make plans.
Floofybit wrote:And plus, we won't be in this mortal realm long enough for that to happen.

There's no guarantee of that.
Floofybit wrote:Plus, combatting human caused global warming here in Earth is a much better solution to screwing up another planet.

1. The initial investments required for space exploration/colonization are miniscule compared to tinkering with Earth's environment...plus if we take a longer perspective, having more infrastructure to work with out there makes keeping Earth stable easier to do.
2. I'd imagine that we'd not be "screwing up" planets if we're actively working to fix Earth.

Space exploration/expansion is an asset for making Earth better, it's not a competitor.

Jupiter's a neat planet, especially if you factor in its wide variety of moons.

My personal pick would probably be Saturn, I find the planet itself along with its rings and Titan to be fascinating.

Titan...the only moon with a thick atmosphere comparable to that of earth, with the exception that it's nitrogen and methane.
