Favourite film of 2023?

Postby Vikanias » Thu Jan 11, 2024 8:30 pm

As we all know, 2023 was probably the worst year for the film industry in years. With there being dozens of flops and poorly rated films. Of course, in a pile of trash, there’s always a few good things in there. And there were a couple of those last year.

Yes, this is almost two weeks late to the party, but better late than never!

I didn’t really see any of the big movies this year, I did see the Mario movie in the theatres with a friend, who was taking the day to hang out with his nephew, and since his nephew was begging to see the film, he went and bought tickets. And y’know, for what it was it was pretty alright. There was a large amount of 30/40 year old adults not with any children however.

I saw Sisu on streaming, and I fucking loved this film, it knew what it was and it did that perfectly, and old Finnish guy during the late stages of ww2 killing Nazis who took his gold. And it did it on a relatively small budget which is great conserving how many film studios are ridden with bigbudgetitis.

For the other films this year, pretty much all of Disney’s films were flops and rated poorly by viewers and critics, which isn’t out of the norm for the house of mouse these days.

Oppenheimer was another film I saw at home, and I enjoyed it, while it was long, it’s nothing considering I’ve watched the Ten Commandments with my father every Easter since I was little, it was no biggie.

But now, to my favourite film of 2023… Godzilla Minus One. Some of you may have not even heard of this film considering it didn’t do much marketing overseas, but you most definitely recognize the name. Godzilla Minus One is the second of the Reiwa era films (the first being Shin Godzilla in 2016) made by his original creator, Toho.

This film did everything perfectly, with just a budget of under 15 million dollars. I cared for thr characters, which is usually an oddity in Godzilla films. Godzilla felt real, and its messages of the Trauma of War and survivors guilt is profound and well delivered. Of course, there is one visual issues at times, but with the team had, it’s still extremely good. Takashi Yamasaki is truly a star director.

And I believe that’s it, maybe I’m forgetting a hit movie starring Ryan Gosling? Nah, must be my imagination. Anyways, NSG, what was your favourite film of 2023? And do you think the film industry will have another bad year in 2024?

I'm going to have to go with Oppenheimer because I'm a sucker for historical dramas and Christopher Nolan rarely disappoints. Cillian Murphy did a great job portraying a complex figure.

Solid third: Oppenheimer

2. Was Barbie, unironically loved that film.

But undisputed on top and my absolute favourite was Godzilla Minus One.

I am once again reminded of the fact that Godzilla Minus One was not released in my local theaters and this makes me sad.

Jokes aside, my favorite film of 2023 is Oppenheimer. I love biopics, and it's also a movie I watched in the cinema while hanging out with my best friends, so it was an overall great experience and a highlight of 2023.

If I had to name a close second though, it has to be John Wick Chapter 4. Absolutely love the franchise, and I'm a sucker for gun fu.

I will have to go with 'The Zone of Interest' by Jonathan Glazer. Not many people may have seen it, but as a sucker for historical dramas as well as indie films, I absolutely loved it.

It’s the only 2023 movie I remember watching, so I’ll pick that one too. I thought it was fairly decent.

Edit: There was also the Indiana Jones movie, although I thought that one was a “meh” or so.

Big year for genre and nostalgia.

Godzilla Minus One absolutely floored me. I wasn't expecting a somber meditation on post war Japan in my giant monster movie, but I'm here for it. Between that and Shin Godzilla, this new era of Toho Godzilla is amazing in a way I never would have imagined possible.

Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse, you could hang any frame of that movie on the wall. Taking one of the things that's taken for granted about Spider-man as a character, the metric shitton of trauma that goes into being him, and then challenging the notion that tragedy is necessary and not just tragedy was great. Also being told where you belong versus finding your own path. All good things Plus, a dessert cart full of fan service. All great.

Similarly, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem was easily the best take on TMNT since the beginning. Strangely, not by glomming back onto the comic book where I first fell in love with the Ninja Turtles but doing the absolute best to focus on the 'teenage' part of it all. Like one of the best parts of the movie is them watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Sisu was fun.

Oppenheimer was absolutely outstanding. I felt like I witnessed not just history, but cinematic history being made.

I also really enjoyed a lot of the fun franchise movies this year. Five Nights at Freddy's was fun incarnate, Haunted Mansion was everything my 10-year-old self dreamed of, Dungeons and Dragons was shockingly good, and Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was an amazing end to one of my favorite franchises.

For me, I have to say Oppenheimer. It was such a cinematic masterpiece. The suspense, setting, theme, music, and everything else made the movie so surreal and astonishing. Both Christopher Nolan and Ludwig Göransson are geniuses.

Loved Barbie a lot, it was a very fun movie with great jokes and great aesthetics. Oppenheimer was good but i prefer Interstellar as my favorite Nolan movie because the idea of Nolan cinematographic awe applied not to stars but to atomic bombs seems too nihilistic for my tastes, i do not find my meaning of life in atomic bombs :')
