Taylor Swift is the 2023 Times Person of the Year

Postby Bisofeyr » Thu Dec 07, 2023 10:19 am

Didn't see a thread about this, so I figured I'd go ahead and make one.

Taylor Swift is the 2023 Times Person of the Year, following her iconic Eras tour which is currently on track to be the first ever to gross over one billion dollars. Times discussed this:
Her epic career-retrospective tour recounting her artistic “eras,” which played 66 dates across the Americas this year, is projected to become the biggest of all time and the first to gross over a billion dollars; analysts talked about the “Taylor effect,” as politicians from Thailand, Hungary, and Chile implored her to play their countries. Cities, stadiums, and streets were renamed for her. Every time she came to a new place, a mini economic boom took place as hotels and restaurants saw a surge of visitors.

I've seen a lot of people questioning this decision, but as soon as I saw the shortlist of people (see below), I was sure that Swift was going to win. Even as someone who is not her biggest fan (I appreciate her music, I just don't go out of my way to listen to it), it is absolutely impossible to deny her cultural impact. I'm curious on NSG's opinion, but I believe the following quote from the article adequately sums up the decision to choose her:

Swift’s accomplishments as an artist—culturally, critically, and commercially—are so legion that to recount them seems almost beside the point. As a pop star, she sits in rarefied company, alongside Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and Madonna; as a songwriter, she has been compared to Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and Joni Mitchell. As a businesswoman, she has built an empire worth, by some estimates, over $1 billion. And as a celebrity—who by dint of being a woman is scrutinized for everything from whom she dates to what she wears—she has long commanded constant attention and knows how to use it. (“I don’t give Taylor advice about being famous,” Stevie Nicks tells me. “She doesn’t need it.”) But this year, something shifted. To discuss her movements felt like discussing politics or the weather—a language spoken so widely it needed no context. She became the main character of the world.

I'm fine with this. It's better than when Hitler or putin were man of the year.

You overestimate her political power. She couldn't get the Dems to win in Tennessee, and America is generally shifting to the right, and not the left. Maybe if things get really dire she'll consider it.

did she actually do anything this year? why did she get it? i can think of, like, 5 people who were more influential than her that were on that list.

personally, i would've named prigozhin man of the year. he wasn't on the list, but he led the largest rebellion against the russian government since 1993 and under his leadership the wagner group expanded exponentially. he wasn't a good person, and i'm happy he's dead, but definitely one of the most influential this year.

Mainly because of the Eras Tour and how it grossed over a billion dollars and boosted the US economy in this year in particular. More broadly, her support for sartists' rights, gender equality...

I didn't realize she was influential enough to be on the list for that, but good for her.

I'm not sure making Prigozhin 2023 person of the year after 2022's person of the year was Zelensky and the Spirit of Ukraine would go down well... like, anywhere.

And anyway, sure he led a massive rebellion that had great potential, but it failed, and barely did anything. Putin consolidated more power, that's nothing new and not really world news. And there are many other military/political leaders in Russia which also could've won, not least Putin himself (a person can win multiple times)- but again that sort of defeats the point of 2022's person of the year being the Spirit of Ukraine.

Taylor Swift has had an impact in every country she's toured or will tour in, which, incidentally, is more than Europe, North America and unstable parts of Africa- unlike Wagner.

Also, can dead people win? Not sure how that's meant to work.

This is a really excellent point: she has had a multinational impact, without being a world leader. The only person on that list who I think could beat her for Person of the Year is Sam Altman, who simply does not have enough public recognition to really receive it imo.

Sam Altman, too, has little impact outside of North America and possibly Europe and Japan. If the selection process had taken place after his dismissal- which I doubt- or if we get more information about why he was fired, and link it to the future of AI and which path it will take on AI safety, then he has a better case.

Personally I think, if I didn't support Swift's nomination, Xi Jinping should've won it. Spy balloons, Tiktok bans, and an economic crisis at home, which implications for the Global South and the future of Western democracy....

Never understood the appeal and quite possibly has the single most annoying fanbase in the world, but it's kinda hard to deny how omnipresent she's been this year, so this isn't that surprising.
