Everything Thread

Welcome to Britonisea! Welcome to the 20th International Baseball Slam! Over the next couple of weeks, 20 baseball teams will play in venues across southern Britonisea for the chance to become the 20th winner of the International Baseball Slam. 20 teams, 20th IBS trophy, 1 winner - who's going to win?

Format

20-team tournament: 5 groups of 4, with the top two qualifying to the Super Round. The super round sees a single round-robin with top 2 qualifying for championship match and 3rd-4th qualifying for bronze medal match.
As mentioned in the bid, tiebreaks during group stages will be wins, H2H Wins, H2H difference, and overall difference.

The United Republic of Britonisea is located in the Northern hemisphere of the Novapax on the Terra Centurium continent and is home to 62 million people. Britonisea is a diverse, modern and innovative nation, with excellent technological advancement, and sustainability and ranks highly as a nation with high equality. Britonisea has many different climates due to its geographical position and its ultra-high mountainous zone which stretches down the middle of the nation known as “the spine of Britonisea”. While the nation experiences a wide range of different temperatures and climates, the major cities are usually located in places that have a temperate climate in the south, while a continental climate is major in the north.

The nation has particular interests in its Arts and Culture sector - with a vibrant film and television industry which it prides itself on, an endless array of museums and exhibition halls for people to attend and an explosive music scene which has been recognised throughout the multiverse. The nation has a major interest in sports, too. Despite this, the nation has not attempted to host or even participate in many international competitions, resigning itself to national and regional competitions with a long term goal to one day jump onto the international scene - a goal which has not yet been realised. The nation, however, has all the right facilities to host events of large scale and magnitude - with the 20th International Baseball Slam being a great first event to add its hosting portfolio.

Quick Facts about Britonisea
  1. The currency is the Brito Pound Sterling (£): The Britons will say '1 Brito' when referring to money, with 100 pence making 1 Brito. The currency rate is $1.68 NSD = £1 BPS.
  2. The capital city is Doportedas, which is the most populous city: While Doportedas is the capital and home to over 6 million people, Telm City is the largest city by space and was the former capital of Britonisea. Telm has just over 5 million people.
Languages: English is the official and most used language in Britonisea, but Britonish and French are also widely spoken. Britonish is spoken in the east more, while in the west French is spoken more. There's about 15-20 million Britonish speakers in Britonisea with most knowing basic phrases while there's over 6 million French speakers in the west.
  3. Britonisea drives on the left: Britonisea, alongside Aloquirbe and Estogium, all drives on the left handside of the road - this goes for railways too.
  4. The timezone is +0: The timezone that Britonisea is in is UTC - Britonisea is on Terra Centurium which is known as the continent that is considered in the centre of the map.
  5. Expect mild and average temperatures: The north of Britonisea is very much near the Arctic Circle meaning that its pretty freezing up there, with some snowfall already being reported there. This has meant that the IBS has been pushed down to the south where you can expect temperatures between 7C and 16C throughout the course of the IBSXX.
  6. Eighteen is your number: The minimum age for most things is 18 in Britonisea - the full age of consent, alcohol purchases, cigarettes etc. Drugs are strictly banned in Britonisea which adopts a no-tolerance to such things, including marijuana.
  7. The emergency number is triple 7: If you ever have an issue in Britonisea, just dial 777 and you'll be put through to the police, fire department or ambulance.

Telm City is a wonderful city along the eastern coast of Britonisea. Telm City is the former capital city of Britonisea, but remains the capital city of the Authority of Telm, which includes the cities of North Telm, South Telm, Cappehnyaden and of course Telm City itself. The city boasts a population of 5,060,021 people living within the 11 boroughs. With a size just reaching 1,000 square miles, Telm City is the largest city in Britonisea, but this fact might turn you away from coming here. Despite being huge, Telm City has been well equipped will all of the things that you will need to get around the city without a hitch. The company that deals with transport in Telm City, Telm Transport Transit (TTT), has been working in the whole Authority for over 400 years, making it easy to not only travel around the city but to different parts of the Authority that we would love for you to visit on your journey to Telm City. For both trains and buses, there are a few lines that will take you around the whole system, lines which are called those trains “The Interlinks” - a separate system to the TTT but you can transfer from one system to another usually in the same buildings. Telm is home to Stadium Strata which regularly hosts World Cup qualifiers and is the largest football-specific stadium in the country. Regardless, the stadium does sometimes host other sports and concerts too. University of Telm will be hosting the IBS events in Telm - it is one of the biggest universities in the country too.

Luton & Sports City is the name of a conurbation in the south-west of the country which consists of Luton, a medium-sized city alongside Sports City, a relatively newly built city which is home to a wide number of arenas and stadiums that are home to a lot of the sporting institutes in the country. Luton & Sports City regularly hosts events across the country and we thought that it would be the perfect location for the IBS. Luton is by a rocky shore but there are still spectacular views of the area. The group stages will be hosted in the National University of Sport which is the largest of its kind in Britonisea and where those who want a career in sport, whether that's actually playing sport, sports journalism, rehabilitation etc all come here. The university uses some of the arenas that have been built across Sports City as its bases but the main campus itself is large and spacious providing good space for the IBS. Luton & Sports City are well connected to the National Rail network with other direct services to cities such as Doportedas and Kyvivre in the west.

Doportedas (pronounced Du'por-ti-das) is the capital city of Britonisea, home to just over six million people within its urban area making it the most populous city in the country. Doportedas, similarly to boroughs other cities may have, is split into ten different zones, with smaller local authorities within them - each of which has a population between 130,000 to 250,000 people. Doportedas is also the capital city of its Authority (which is on a similar level to a county or province), which was recently renamed to Dopor in order to avoid confusion with the city and the state. The Dopor Authority is by far the largest one, with over 9 million people residing there - that's a staggering 14% of the Britonish population. Doportedas is served by fantastic transport. For delegations that don't have an immediate connection to Britonisea, which is unlikely due to Britonisea's extensive globalisation, using different mediums, you're able to get to Doportedas via Darkmania, South Batoko and Aenglide, while other regional nations such as Mercedini, Togonistan and Estogium providing reliable and frequent routes to the capital city. Going through the different types of travel, Doportedas is home to not one, not two but three international airports - Aeroporte (pronounced Arrow-port), Olympia Airport and Deghnby Airport but the latter is a much longer ride into the city than the other two options - but it might save you some money. Regardless of which airport you come to, both are fantastically served by ARD and National Rail services. If, for whatever reason, you decide to fly in using an airport outside of Doportedas (perhaps it was cheaper, perhaps your act wanted to check out a different city and have a Britonish road trip), Doportedas is very well connected to the rest of the country with it being a major hub on the Britonish Circular Route meaning you can virtually take a train to any (major) location in the country for a reasonable price. Some of the major stations in the city include Aysledwire International (pronounced Asul-dwire) which is the nearest grand station to Olympia Airport, you've got Centreon Station which is right in the heart of the city and also Juke Royal Station which serves international destinations such as Aloquirbe and Taeseon but is also a connection to St Kings Bay.

Doportedas is home to a major metro network called Doportedas Metro which has over 300 stations. UCA: Doportedas has its own station on the map as it is one of the largest and most important uni in the city. It is served by the Oxtonber and Northern lines, a stop away from Centreon - aka the Grand Central station of Doportedas.

St Kings Bay (City) is a city located on an island in...St Kings Bay which is under the Authority of Doportedas. St Kings Bay is connected via rail using three underground tunnels - one that leads to Doportedas Aysledwire International and one that leads to Estogium (which is the same line that connects to Doportedas - an international rail link) and one that leads to the north of Aloquirbe with a direct motorway to its capital city, Aloquirbe City (this one is a rail and road link). All tunnels are around 25 -35 miles long. St Kings Bay is a wonderful place to live, being built up in some areas but most of its greenery is preserved. Britons recount St Kings Bay feeling and smelling fresh, very different to the bustling megacity that is Doportedas. St Kings Bay is only a stone's throw away from Doportedas, with you able to see Doportedas' skyscrapers far in the distance - it's around 30 minutes away using the underground high-speed rail link. You could also take a ferry as well - it will be up to the team's preference when travelling to and from the two cities but the ferry journey could be twice or thrice as long.

(Also the map does not show the accurate position...or size... of St Kings Bay)

Quickenden is the third-largest city in the country in terms of population after Doportedas and Telm City - with 2.8 million residing within city limits. Quickenden is a major hub for business and trade. As the city is quite large in terms of size, you certainly won't be short of things to do. Firstly, within the Quickenden Authority (confusingly the Authority or "State" is also called Quickenden, with the main urban area usually being referred to the City by natives from the Authority), there are two other cities that you can explore; Aronyk and Jyske - with the latter of the two laying alongside the Britonisea Bay, home to one of the country's largest ports for the fishing industry. Aronyk is a bit closer to Quickenden - 45 minutes - and is a relatively new city, still being built up. Aronyk most recently held some of the matches at the World Cup and the World Hit Festival and so despite it being a rather young city, there's a lot going on. If you'd like a nice and quiet private beach, Aronyk is the perfect place for you. Though, if you prefer to stay within City limits, why don't have a little stroll along the city's many shopping districts - you can shop 'till you drop in Quickenden, with the fresh and urban apparel making it a hotspot for young fashion, but if you're a tad older, we can find you something to wear that will make you feel 20 again!

Quickenden has a big sports scene, being home to the National Athletics Centre which has hosted a leg of the NS Athletics Tour. Another Tour that Quickenden is involved in is the NationStates Tennis Tour as the MEGA Indoor Arena will play host the NSTT Tour Final which will begin on the 7th December. Quickenden, now hosting matches in the NSTT and the IBS, is expected to be rather busy to we are requesting that fans leave extra time for travelling around the city.

Junterapten is the fourth largest city in Britonisea with just over 2 million people. Junterapten is known for its huge multilane thoroughfare which rips through the centre of the city from the beach in the south to the north of the city with huge LED billboards that line the street known as the "Junterpaten Lights". The beach in the south? Boundariebeach or Boundary Beach is a communal beach where you can show your stuff - well to an extent. Boundary Beach is one of two beaches where hundreds and thousands from abroad nations go to for a tan (though maybe not in the winter). Boundariebeach is usually more popular than Burgens Beach (Junterapten's other major beach nearer its airport). Burgens Beach is located inside City limits and is one of the most popular beaches in Britonisea. When you look out of your window and you see land, the first thing you will notice is the white sand of Burgens Beach. Burgens Beach is also popular because planes cross it at quite a low distance - though not low enough for it to disrupt life on a beach. Burgens Beach is usually suitable for plane watchers, cloud watchers and families who want a quick trip down to the beach.

See above for information about Luton & Sports City.

Place du Sport is the largest green area and square in the centre of the city. With it being in the centre, it is a well connected area and over the course of the weeks in the running up to the final matches, Place du Sport will transform into a small arena where fans can sit on temporary seats (for a capacity of 8,000 people) while those without tickets will be able to watch on open area side on the grass.

The Kytler Peninsulae "Phoenix" National Baseball Team
Official team information for International Baseball Slam XX

Background information
The Kytler Peninsulae are returning from decades of international isolation and competing in an array of international sports, quite often unnervingly well. Is baseball going to be the latest? There's only one way to find out! But there's a past history of success here from World Baseball Classics of generations gone by, at least to the point of "reach the playoffs and then fall over." The national team in those days were usually known as the Conquerors, which was decidedly optimistic; for this revival, they're being branded as the Phoenix.

The sport remains one of the two big summer team sports in the country along with cricket, with the latter more popular in the northern peninsula and baseball bigger in the south. (The majority of Kytlerians actually live on neither of them, but on the land connecting the two known as the Eastern Corridor. Domestically baseball is probably bigger than cricket there, but cricket gained a resurgence after a strikingly successful T20 run in what was the first physical sports tournament a Kytlerian team had played in post-isolation.)

The Kytlerian Baseball League is notable for a specific compromise rule on the DH debate, and one that has inadvertently led to a distinctive use of pitchers. Under the "Kytlerian Compromise," pitchers bat, but managers have one opportunity per game to sub in a pinch-hitter for the pitcher but not remove the pitcher from the game (the use of this must be declared at the time of the substitution). The pioneering manager Angufams Apyrphung reasoned that if he used this opportunity on the starting pitcher's first plate appearance, then immediately pulled the pitcher on the second, his starter would not only never need to bat but would almost certainly have a low enough load to be able to start on shorter rest next game. After Apyrphung's Clifford Milliners won three national titles in a row, his methods became increasingly popular across the league, and now it is absolutely standard practice for Kytlerian teams to use a three-man rotation on very limited pitch counts, roughly along the lines of Bill James' proposal for a three-man rotation but with less defined parameters (the most common one is to pull the starter no later than the end of the at-bat in which they threw their 75th pitch, and this is the one used by the Phoenix manager).

Scouting report
Position players: Sigurbergursson and Johnson have big platoon splits, which is why they're two of the first three in the order against righties and don't even reliably start against lefties. The former, along with all the Icelandic-named players in the lineup, are Græntfjaller-Kytlerian dual nationals who are often referred to as "BFGs" - the B is for Big, the G is obvious, and you can decide for yourself what the F is. They're all erratic three-true-outcome sluggers. Their antithesis is Harper-Barnes, one of only four women active in the Kytlerian Baseball League and by far the best; a lightning-quick hands-and-feet athlete lacking badly in power, she specialises in turning double plays. Rogers is the best offensive catcher in the country by a distance, but Marshall is better at the whole "being a catcher" business, so they tend to be rotated, often with Rogers DHing. Mocks is pure emergency cover at catcher.

Starting pitchers: The fixed rotation order is Miller, Lundy, Whaariny.
Miller is a vastly experienced ace who has a record seven KBL Pitcher of the Year titles; he's all about command and control, especially at this stage of his career. He tends to pitch backwards off his slider, which still has plenty of horizontal movement and reliably peppers the bottom of the zone; his main fastball is a two-seamer that also has some useful movement, and he mixes in a cutter, changeup, and an occasional curveball.
Lundy does his best work with his four-seam fastball, which he consistently locates well, and pairs it with (in decreasing order of usage) a slider, cutter, and changeup.
Whaariny is noted for his slurve, which has vicious two-plane movement; he pairs it with a two-seam/split-finger fastball mix and sporadically uses his changeup, most often as a surprise strike-stealer.

Relief pitchers: Whootung and Marshall operate as starters for their KBL clubs and are designated as swingmen for the Phoenix; if a starter gets injured, one of them will step into the rotation. Whootung is a fastball-slider power pitcher whom many Kytlerian analysts have expected to move into relief due to his limited repertoire and low lefty arm slot, but he's been highly productive with both pitches (the slider and his less-used, less-controlled changeup getting huge whiffs from hitters cheating on the fastball) and the Rattlers haven't messed with success. Marshall has a more traditional starter look and a similar pitch mix to Lundy, though he uses his cutter more and controls his four-seamer less.
Sung-Jae, a Quebecois dual national, is seen as the favourite for the closer job; his splitter has scary late movement and tunnels beautifully with his four-seam fastball, while he also has a slider that surprises the unprepared. Other contenders for close-and-late situations are Harper (who gets a ton of strikeouts by combining a 12-6 curveball with a fastball with rising life) and Whosash (a two-way player who was a starter early in his career before elbow surgery and has reinvented himself as a fastball-slider power reliever who can also take his rocket arm to right field). Daniels is the other notable reliever here, a groundball machine with a sinker/slider/curveball mix and a tendency to just plain avoid the top of the zone; he's most likely to be used when there's traffic on the bases with the hope to get a rally-killing double play.

Britonish Roster at IBSXX

20th International
Baseball Slam
Image
Trigramme: BRI
Demonym: Britonish, Briton(s), Brits
Official (Main) Language: English
Other Languages: Britonish, French
Uniform Colours: Red, Orange & White

General Information

Ever since its win at the IX Olympics in Baseball (which wasn't a gold medal because baseball at the time was only a demonstration sport), baseball has been slowly gaining traction in Britonisea. Britonisea has, a few times, participated in the International Baseball Slam, whether that is under the Britonish flag or the Aloquirbe flag - where the sport is a little more popular than the mainland. A lot of Britonisea's players actually come from Aloquirbe, a small nation that is a stone's throw away from Doportedas, separated by a small channel. With baseball no longer being an Olympic sport, the Britoballers are finding new ways to fly the Britonish flag internationally and what better way to do that than at the IBSXX! Well, of course maybe the WBC but the Britoballers are in no way good enough to face the scary powerful teams that participate in that. The plan is to participate in the IBS for a while until the team feel confident they can face the Champs. As a nice re-welcome back into the world of baseball, the Britonish Sporting Agency and the Government put in a bid to host the IBSXX. This means that teams from across the world will come here to Britonisea - it should be a (base)ball!

Experienced Youth Core Look To New Manager Anxiously

The junior sunshine tigers left Loyo today for the United Republic of Britonisea, with high hopes after finishing in the top 6 during last year’s edition. The team’s starting lineup hasn’t experienced many changes since they took home victory in IBS 18, save the outfield, which has seen the additions of Yi-jun Haeyan, Seamus Blaese and Dong Young.

Tea Huishan still confidently leads the team in batting average, but the parity between hitters has shrunk his lead. Jason Varatharajullu is the team’s hottest rising talent, and the Red Cloud youth prospect might surpass Huishan if his performance in this contest is lacking. The team’s energy is nervous, with all eyes pointing to the new manager to gauge the future of the program.

Calum Gellman was appointed to the role, but only received a temporary contract from the People’s National Sporting Committee for the length of the competition. Gellman has served as the junior sunshine tiger’s bench coach since IBS 18, and worked as a batting coach for the Loyo Athletic Reds prior to his stint with the international squad.

Gellman never had a career in the professional leagues, but caught the eye of former LAR Chairman Jias Nianzu, who helped the young coach establish foundations in Loyon baseball. It's uncertain how players have reacted to the appointment. The clubhouse has been quiet on the issue since former manager Velma Soosang left to coach South Newlandia's St. Riecarn Saints following IBS 19.

Taking his spot is former Saint Hayahoma's star Miria Insigne, who brings a new element of star power to the team. Insigne played shortstop for the coins, and is well known around Loyo for founding one of the first luxury brands in the country: Leopp. Insigne has experience as a first base coach, and previously held the bench coach role at Kamisusunai Steel.

Regardless of the coaching changes, the PNSC has high expectations for the squad: Get to the super round, and make a good showing of it. The team has the experience and the skill to do it. With five players having their last year of U-21 eligibility, it may be the last chance that some of them have to win silverware in an international competition.

Baseball fans around Loyo are still grumbling about the professional league’s prolonged postponement, but officials from expansion clubs Baek-Hyeonic Church and the Odonhai Bulls say that it may still be several months to a year before play can resume.

Pitching MD #1: Rei Uno

Batter Up!: A Great Start!

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Nov 29, 2023 10:08 am

Oh look, it's baseball time again! You know that the cycle has resumed when we are talking about the IBS but this one feels all the more special. It is the 20th edition after all, hosted by Britonisea of all places, and who better to send to this special occasion than the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s? Vojtěch Heyrovský has a good team at his disposal, with some players already with WBC experience under their belts, but now they are back and hoping to continue their quest for development and success in this invitational tournament. Switching the setup to a mandatory DH will certainly shake things up, but let's see if this team of old and new could get back underway on the right foot.

Luton & Sports City and the National University of Sport will host all of our group games, starting against the U21 squad of the Wörgen-in-Maurenzagge Wizards from Basel-Triesen. All we could do in a situation where we had no data on the opposition was to just play the game like it was a normal opponent...and with Joseph "JoJo" McAlbo starting on the mound, that's all we could really ask for. We started off this all-DH era with a 3-run bomb by Valentin Herzog in the 2nd and while the Wizards got one back in the 3rd, we managed to take over from there. The 4th saw Maui Aiona brought home by a Fernando Rodrigo Viera RBI, the 5th saw a 2-run bomb by Seo Ji-kyo and the 6th saw FRV add to his batting stats with a solo bomb. The Wizards got a 2nd but that would be all she wrote as we secured the 7-2 victory.

Strong start, but there's more to come. Next up will be the Zinemar Spacemen from Sherpus. GO BATTIN' CUBS...Wait, we're doing WHAT?!

Look, Kytlerian baseball's back!

Out of the gate, the start was inconspicuous. Veteran Kytlerian starter D.L. Miller needed 23 pitches to get out of the first inning - a particular problem when he's part of a three-man rotation on a 75-pitch limit each day - and his 24th was a leadoff homer to A Man. Apparently he was a power hitter, and certainly he played right field for the Golmydia Roar, but nothing else of him was known. Still, once that blow was out of the way, Miller started mowing down batters with groundball outs, and then started getting run support. Appropriately, the first run of this new Kytlerian era was scored by the trailblazing Jennifer Harper-Barnes, who reached first base with a leadoff single before being driven in on a two-out double from leadoff hitter Dennis Johnson, That levelled the scores; the next inning. it was almost the scoreboard at the University of Telm ballpark getting levelled, as "BFG" Arndór Asbjørnsson crushed a middle-middle fastball directly over the head of the pitcher from whom it came and a long way over the batter's eye for a two-run homer that also drove in fellow BFG Raknar Sigurbergursson.

One of those runs came back on a fifth-inning one-out RBI single that yoinked Miller on 76 pitches, but groundball specialist reliever Lawrence Daniels was called upon to secure a double play and (with the help of slick fielding from Harper-Barnes at second base) did so with the literal next pitch. He was given the sixth (scoreless on 12 pitches, including another GIDP to offset a leadoff single) before tagging to two-way player Dings Whosash, who was bought in initially to take an at-bat in the pitcher's slot at the top of the seventh with one out and Harper-Barnes at second (he advanced her to third on a flyout to deep left field before Johnson and Barnes both walked and Sigurbergursson was struck out swinging with the bases loaded). After pitching a scoreless seventh, he actually got another at-bat in the top of the eighth, in a bases-loaded situation with two outs after an Asbjørnsson single was followed by two walks either side of a Harper-Barnes sac bunt that advanced Asbjørnsson to third; he briefly thought he'd hit a grand slam, but his moonshot on a payoff pitch drifted just foul, and he had to settle for an RBI walk after a borderline wild pitch on the do-over. The pain would be replicated for Whosash as he took to the mound and that insurance run was wiped out by a homer that snuck just inside that same right foul pole. That chased Whosash out of the game and tasked young Quebecois-Kytlerian closer Park Sung-Jae to secure a four-out save, but that proved a simple task as his splitter draw one swinging strike after another; after a groundout to get out of the eighth, he struck out the side in the ninth and the Phoenix had started blazing their trail.

The Nova Anglicana Lions and a mysterious set of Milchaman representatives are next, and there is genuine optimism that both can be dealt with easily, which is probably a very dangerous thing for a Kytlerian team to think about because they tend to do better as underdogs than favourites. "They've sent a literal bunch of no-namers," Asbjørnsson told RTX Radio in a post-game interview. "No-namers don't tend to survive very long here, especially in later games when opponents can actually start scouting on them."
Out of international isolation and... winning things? Huh?

Still winless after two games

Doportedas, Britonisea - The Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer et Burnham-on-Stove Under 23 National Baseball Tapirs are still winless after two games and our chances to advance to the Super Round are slim. On matchday 1, the Tapirs played against the host nation, Britonisea, and lost 7-4. Tyler Wu-Kwiatkowski and Reign Evanson were the starting pitchers. Serge Gori hit a 3 runs homerun in the top 3rd inning and The Britoballers were leading 3-0. In the same inning, Marianne Gailloux was at bat while Brennan Schofield-Reilly was on 3rd base. Gailloux hitted a single in right field, Schofield-Reilly scored. The score was 3-1 Britoballers. In the bottom 4th inning, William Sanfaçon-Lagrandeur hits a double, Rowan Gough walk, and after 1 out, Brennan Schofield-Reilly hits a double, Sanfaçon-Lagrandeur and Gough both score. The game is tied at 3-3. The Tapirs takes the lead in the bottom 5th inning when Marianne Gailloux scores on a double by Rose-Anne Bonnette and the score is 4-3 Tapirs. The Britoballers retake the lead in the top 6 inning. Dewayne Massey scores on a sacrife fly by Biaggio Tamboia. With two outs, Sheard Pietri its a double and Tranter Lefèvre scores. The Britoballers are leading 5-4. They adds two other points, one in the 7th and one in the 9th innings and the final score was 7-4 Britoballers.

On matchday 2, the Tapirs played against San Isidro Labrador Jornalero and lost 4-3. Starting pitchers were Juan Diego Salazar Valenzuela and Starting Pitcher #2. San isidro scored in the bottom 1st inning and took a 1-0 lead. In the top 3rd inning, with two outs, Marianne Gailloux hits a triple. She scores on Piper Swaggerty's single. A few batters later, the bases are loaded. Rowan Gough walks, Piper Swaggerty scores and it's 2-1 Tapirs. In the top 4th inning, with two outs, pitcher Juan Diego Salazar Valenzuela hits a single. Marianne Gailloux follows with a double. Piper Swaggerty hits the ball in left field, Salazar Valenzuela scores, Gailloux also tries to score but she's ruled out at the plate. The score is now 3-1 tapirs. San Isidro scores two points in the bottom 4th inning and one in the bottom 5th inning. The final score is 4-3 San Isidro Labrador Jornalero.

The Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer et Burnham-on-Stove Under 23 National Baseball Tapirs starts the tournament with two losses in two games. The Tapirs absolutely needs a win against Atlas Astros combined with a win by the Britoballers against San Isidro and cross their fingers that they have the tie break. Starting pitchers will be Tristan Mousseau-Grondin and Starting Pitcher #3. Manager Jean-Paul Couillard announced that Catherine Bouthillette won't play due to an undisclosed injury. Piper Swaggerty will move from 3rd base to 2nd base and Florence Rouette will play at 3rd base and take Bouthillette's spot in the batting order.

Three cycles we saw summer saw the Grim Reapers, just six months after the Grim Reapers' miraculous third-place run on the WBC-54 in Zwangzug, retire their two greatest infielders' numbers to the rafters of the Commonwealth Park, Songak, the longtime home of the Quebecois national baseball team. The numbers coincided with their return from Cassadaigua to their home teams in Kingston Tigers and Saguenay Lions. It was a fitting nod to two legends and lifelong friends who have played on rival schools and clubs all their lives since high school and into Cassadaigua, and who have represented the finest peak of the Quebecois baseball. We will all remember their decadelong heroics, especially the runs they had on the WBC 53 and 54.

Levinson Webster, a former Grim Reapers' infielder who has won the IBS title and helped the Grim Reapers to an Olympics quarterfinals finish, returns as the Under-23s manager and the senior team bench coach. Fortunately for him, he will be backed up by a solid cadre of fellow collegiate and professional coaches, most notably in Kendra Noh, the Joongyeong Bears' fielding coach who has helped up stabilising the young guns' fielding while at the previous IBS and the Olympics. He is also joined by the Grim Reapers' legend, Heo Myeong-Shin, as the greatest fielder in current era of Quebecois baseball starts preparing for the final season of his highly-celebrated career.

Notes on our Under-22 Grim Reapers

Traditionally, the Grim Reapers have taken the pitcher use with great dose of liberalism. Traditionally the senior team has let the starter to go well into seventh or even eighth inning. For this team, as an Under-22 side, there will be an absolute pitch count of 100 pitches, with preferable range of 75-85 pitches to save the pitchers' arms. That said, it is just as likely for the starting pitcher to get yanked within first three innings if one allows too many runs early into the game, which of course have happened before. In those cases, expect at three to five pitchers to be used for remainder of the game.

The Grim Reapers, as with their equivalents in other sports, are very aggressive- it's in their playing colours and will stay like that forever. While they do lack fast players, most of the outfielders and some infielders do have very good sense in stealing bases or making right decisions when taking risks, so while an occasional whoopsie-daisie with early outs do happen, it's not be all end all. Of course, we also have to remember that this is counted into the selection criteria, which means that both the infielders and outfielders are expected to be proficient in defence and even prepare for multiple positions. This is more the case with infielders than outfielders, but both have seen flexible use of such players before anyway.

Of course, there is a bit of complicated situation with the Quebecois history and geographic realities. Traditionally, baseball has been a fairly racially and regionally ubiquitous sport in Quebec, though there are strong regional and ethnic elements that are noticeable to it. Traditionally, there is strong sense of regional pride that derives from many of the iconic QBO franchises that have defined its history, as six regions traditionally dominate in both high school and pro baseball output, which reflects well into the first round of QBO Drafts. There is somewhat divide between those of Central Quebec (Songak Twins vs. Jongyeong Bears), Southwest (Kingston Tigers vs. Kingston Blue Jays), Manitoba (California City Dodgers), Southeast (Dongnae Giants), Northwest (Attawapiskat Wiz) and Northeast (Hanbat Eagles). There are minor stylistic differences between the regions and how their players' play, but those don't factor as much as how they used to be. Ethnically, the sport does have more Korean-Quebecois players in general rule of thumb, though that means little in this day and age where most Quebecois, whether Indigenous, Caucasian, Korean or of other Commonwealth origins, are fairly mixed-raced. Still, Korean is the lingua franca of the baseball diamond and that continues to be a defining feature of the Quebecois baseball scene as whole.

Batter Up!: The Fall After The Rise

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Dec 01, 2023 6:31 am

After an impressive 7-2 victory got us underway, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were 1-0 and a convincing 1-0 at that. Getting started on the right track is always important and getting that win under their belts was always a good thing for Vojtěch Heyrovský and this young team of rising stars. But there are still many tests that potentially lie ahead and we cannot rest on our laurels now, especially considering the new era we find ourselves in. TJUN-ia is Esportivan now and as such, the Orange and Black flag will be worn as an armband for the rest of our time here in Britonisea.

The now Esportivan Cubs would be taking on the Zinemar Spacemen from Sherpus looking to try and secure a spot in the Super Round to come...but as Peter Glendinning began the game, things didn't go to plan...at all. We took the lead at the top of the first thanks to Masayoshi Kuramochi's solo bomb but that would end up being the only run we would score the entire game as the Spaceman launched out hopes into the deep expanse of outer space, never to return. They got the tying run in the 4th, took the lead in the 6th and added 2 more in the 7th and while Kate Johnson-Green came in to try and steady the ship, nothing could be done. The victory was theirs... absolutely, it was.

And so, we're now 1-1. Our fate rests with our final game against the Sea Dome Lemon Sharks, a team we should be able to beat but you never know in a competition such as this. GO BATTIN' CUBS!

How did the Marineros become the largest exporter of baseball players in the country?

You're unlikely to follow Dod Ravian baseball, which is unlikely to surprise anyone since it's not hard to even watch an Ekstraliga baseball game outside of the Dod Ravian borders. But if you follow baseball in Southern Newlandia or Ko-oren, you may have heard about some Dod Ravian players; chances are they started their careers in Rawa Marineros. Of the 11 players who play outside of their homeland (counting college players), 7 of them are Rawa Marineros alumni.

The Marineros owe this to having the largest finances in the country, the highest game attendance, and the longest history and tradition. Their coaching staff is the best in the country, and every year they produce a multitude of players who will be able to play professionally at different levels.

Sunshine Tigers Start IBS With a Win, But Banijans Humble Them, Setting Up Dramatic Must-Win Showdown

The Junior Sunshine Tigers are 1-1 so far in the campaign for IBS 20. The first result of the campaign was a powerful MD 1 result against the United States of Devonta Thundersticks, which demonstrated the effectiveness of the training that the Junior Sunshine Tigers had started under former manager Velma Soosang, as the team dominated by a margin of 11 runs. Key performances in that game came from pitcher Rei Uno, who only allowed 4 hits during his 6 inning outing, and Tea Huishan, who went 3/4 with two singles and a RBI double.

The next game would present a greater challenge.

Jason Varatharajullu started the game with a home run that arced right over the glove of the opponent's left fielder, helping the team start the game with a 2-0 lead after Rosa Stadler was walked at her first plate appearance.

The Greater Istria Superstars fired back, almost taking the lead back in the bottom of the second, only held off by a stunning double-play orchestrated by Rosa Stadler. The next innings were quiet for Loyo's hitters. Seamus Blaese managed to steal second in the top of the third, but the threat was quickly dimished by a Dong Young pop fly.

An error by Markus Wren led to the Banijans taking the lead in the 3rd, and although he made up for it with a RBI double in the next inning, the Banijans piled 3 more runs in the 4th, with the manager pulling Emre Conversos from the mound in favor of Muhammet Songbai, who pitched an incredible game until he was pulled in the bottom of the 8th for closer Dewayne Kenny, who also performed admirably.

The offensive production just wasn't good enough, and the Loyons were unable to claw back the lead after losing it. Tea Huishan had a chance to open the game up in the top of the 7th, with Markus Wren on third and Rosa Stadler on first. The banijan's pitcher fired in a powerful fastball on a full count, and the Loyon first baseman was retired for the game, unable to take advantage of the opportunity.

Loyo enters into a crucial third matchday of the groupstage, eager to confirm its spot in the next round. Marcia Bobbado is on the mound for the Junior Sunshine Tigers, and with months left for her eligibility, she'll be hoping to make a statement. Calum Gellman, the team's new manager, said that the entire team is fired up after the loss to the Banijan Superstars.

"It was a really close game. But those games are what competitions like this are made of," Gellman said. "We didn't step up like we should, but these players are hungry for a chance to prove they belong in the next round."

Batter Up!: Phew!

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Dec 03, 2023 5:55 am

After a bit of a tough loss to take, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were 1-1 and needed a win on the final day of those group stage to progress into the Super Round that lies ahead. This was not a position that Vojtěch Heyrovský wanted to be in but sometimes, creating diamonds requires a ton of pressure and that was the hope he was clinging onto heading into the final game.

That final game would come against the Sea Dome Lemon Sharks, a full-fledged national team, and one that Khamis Ali Makame had to try and beat from the mound. But we had nothing to fear as a 2-run start from Masayoshi Kuramochi and a 3rd inning bomb from Seo Ji-kyo put us firmly in control. The Lemon Sharks got one back in the 5th, but that just made us angrier than before and Julian Mertz would add 2 more to make sure of our progression. It would end 5-2 in the end and just like that, we were home and dry.

Nothing to worry about, right? It's onto the 10-team gauntlet now, starting with the Loyo Junior Sunshine Tigers. GO BATTIN' CUBS!
