How have your views on the world evolved over the years?

Postby Jolthig » Sat Nov 11, 2023 7:05 pm

How have your views on the world evolved over the years on NSG, and why?

Have they remained the same or has much changed happened?

When I first joined this forum, I was kinda all over the place and didn't know what I truly believed but I gradually settled on social liberalism and was between deism and atheism for religion.

Then, 7 years ago I converted to Islam, but still politically, I was social liberal and continued to advocate it up until 2019 when I decided to commit to no ideology and only the simple phrases of "absolute Justice".

I have chosen Islam Ahmadiyyat simply because I felt a connection to it. I like the Islamic teaching of right place and right time, and always making peace and reconciliation a priority in all affairs.

My views and understanding of the world continue to evolve, but I have gotten a much better grip on where I stand.

I've been a Christian essentially my whole life, but since a year or so ago I've been trying to learn more about it and double down harder into it, and I used to be a Conservative that believed in Republicanism and now I'm some mix of Libertarianism, Monarchism, and Anarchism or so. If that all counts, since I suppose you could call those world views, while being relatively brief and simplistic.

This career I've fallen into has been good for me, I don't want to post here as much anymore from being too busy, so I don't break any rules- and when I do get time to post, I've mellowed out a good deal. Money changes you a lot. It can't fix everything but undoubtedly solves many things you could gripe about.

When I was a kid, I used to be scared of black people. This was back when I moved for the first time to a heavily African American area. Honestly, it's one of my biggest regrets, and something I'm not proud of. I'm glad I grew out of racism at like 13. Too bad everyone else can't be that way.

I still have rather friendly feelings toward Asians though. I try to be an egalitarian but something about east Asian culture just perks my interest unlike, say, Finland.

Over the last 15 years, I think I've held every political view that it is possible to hold, at least once.

When I was 18 I was very, very left-wing. When I was 25 I was very, very right-wing. Now I'm in my mid 30s and I'm somewhere in the middle.

I've always been on a round-trip tour of the center of the political compass, for a while I was slightly more left than I am now, then I was more big-government than I am now, then slightly to the right of where I am now. But my core beliefs haven't changed, they've always been "do whatever you want as long as it doesn't harm others" and "if someone asks for help, and they need it, you should help them". I also have a bit of a tendency to agree with whoever I'm talking to, and when I get tired, I always drift to the left.

I was a dead set socialist for a time. As I've gotten older, my views have moderated somewhat. I'm still rather left wing but not so dogmatic about it anymore.

I usually flip-flop between social democracy and social liberalism. I may have identified as a communist in the past to attempt to be edgy and cool, but I don't remember it very well—nor do I want to.

What might be more annoying was that I was an obnoxious atheist during middle school, so I consistently flaunted my views to religious people in hopes of "proving them wrong" and "getting them rekt." However, now I'm agnostic since I've been humbled in knowing that I am not qualified to determine whether there is a god (or gods), let alone dictate what others believe.

At 10 i didnt understand what religion was or why it was a part of some people's lives and not others. I didn't understand fiscal policy but i had read about and loved the idea of the Manifest Destiny. Well wouldn't that just make sense to convince Canada with its tiny population to be owned by the USA? By 12 i understood our political system had enormous issues and wasn't the Soviet Union just really cool?

In my 20s i was intimidated and curious about religion but always felt like my prayers were lies. At this point my more progressive upbringing was reflected in my social life and politics. (No i no longer believed in the Manifest Destiny) This would carry on for some years with me becoming disillusioned with the left as a whole. If praying felt like lying the left felt like fraud. So I turned to libertarianism and mutualism. Government is good and broken so might as well throw it out and live in cooperative communities. Libertarianism allowed me to devorce myself from the social aspects of the left. You do you and ill be over here untouched and not judging kinda thing.

In my 30s I have grown to understand human nature and the trends of history more. I have found peace in my faith and family and want a world that my children can grow into as decent and successful people. Libertarianism might be great as a principle but its shit poor at building a soceity against those that would turn it into soup. So I have a skeptical relationship with the GOP and a more solid footing in the Right.

None of my views have ever changed once. I learn about new happenings in the world and one of the opinions I've had since birth will instantly appear in my brain to inform me. As such I have opinions on events up to 47 years in the future, and can predict within a few weeks the date of my death.
