GenSec Nominations (2023)

Postby Wallenburg » Sat Nov 04, 2023 12:20 pm

Howdy folks. As some of you may have noticed, Sierra Lyricalia has since resigned from GenSec. For my part, I'm quite sad to see them go, and I thank them for their time serving the GA community. I hope we get to see more of them in the future. That said, (puts GAS hat on) there now exists a vacancy, and 4 GenSec members just isn't going to cut it. We petition everyone for input on who they think would round out the GenSec membership well. Please consider well your criteria for qualification to take up this position. As always, we are including previous nominating motions in our deliberations.

Obviously 4 isn't going to work, but I genuinely do not know anyone who has the qualifications right now to be successful.

That being said, I think the closest are Simone and Magecastle and I thus nominate them.

I agree that we aren’t spoilt for nominees. Simone and Magecastle do seem the closest. There’s also Comfed, activity permitting.
Hello! I’m a GAer and NS Roleplayer from the United Kingdom.
My pronouns are he/him.
Any posts that I make as GenSec will be clearly marked as such and OOC. Conversely, my IC ambassador in the General Assembly is Ambassador Fortier. I’m always happy to discuss ideas about proposals, particularly if grammar or wording are in issue. I am also Executive Deputy Minister for the WA Ministry of TNP.
Kenmoria is an illiberal yet democratic nation pursuing the goals of communism in a semi-effective fashion. It has a very broad diplomatic presence despite being economically developing, mainly to seek help in recovering from the effect of a recent civil war. Read the factbook here for more information; perhaps, I will eventually finish it.

There is no better choice than Kenmoria.

While his activity has waned in recent times, when he's around he's always a reliable presence to provide his opinions and critique in draft threads. His keen eye and thorough deconstruction makes him the perfect person to spot illegalities, his debating style allows for him to participate in legality debates with a clear voice, and his general support for newer players and authors and kindness allows him to continue to fulfil the 'mentor' role as perfectly as before. I don't know if he'll accept due to activity constraints, but if he is available and willing to put himself forward for it there is no better candidate at the moment.

I nominate Algerstonia and Makko Oko, since choosing would be too difficult.

I was actually just about to nominate Kenmoria as well, as in I was typing this and got ninja'd. I take way, way too long to figure out what I'm going to say sometimes lol.

I haven't been around for very long in the grand scheme and I only occasionally actively participate in the GA forum (and the forum in general) but I do lurk a lot, and I do at least skim most proposals and the comments on them, even if I don't respond myself. Kenmoria is a name I've seen in so many proposal threads I've looked at, especially proposals from new authors, and feedback for new authors always includes helpful links.

His feedback is indeed always clear and helpful, and it's always phrased so kindly, especially compared to some of the other feedback I've seen (mostly in the SC forum). He has a way of gently pointing out things that are illegal in a way that doesn't seem antagonistic or discouraging (again something I've seen a lot more of over in SC, but still), and I've seen him participate in several legality challenge discussions as well.

I know I'm pretty inexperienced, but in my opinion as a random nobody who mostly just lurks, Kenmoria has been enormously welcoming and helpful to the GA community and would be perfect for GenSec, although I too know nothing of his availability or willingness to be a part of it.

I agree with Honeydew regarding the nomination for Kenmoria -- I cannot think of a more qualified candidate at this time. Regarding the nominations for myself, I would likely accept them if Gensec chooses to proceed with them, with the asterisk that I broadly believe Kenmoria is the more qualified candidate.

Compared to the last time this has come up:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=521146

I would say I'd suggest (in alphabetical order), Bears Armed (if they want their old gig back), Goober, Honeydew, Hulldom, Kenmoria, Magecastle, Sanctaria, if they are willing. I note Mage said he is interested, and I kind of suspect Kenmoria will decline but I'd be positively surprised if Kenmoria accepts.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid I am not interested. I stepped down as an IE because I don't have much time to commit to NS these days, and while I'm active on the GA discord, I'm not in the forums enough, nor do I intend to be, to be useful on GenSec.

I’ve only just recently returned to the forums, but I have to agree with the nomination for Kenmoria and Bears Armed. Both actively engage in the community, provide constructive feedback, and firmly but diplomatically smack down problematic ideas, comments, and actors when they arise. Their knowledge of the community is extensive enough to allow them solid grips on things that can arise, and how to adapt ideas and processes of the past into the future, including their extensive understanding of extant rulings.

I nominate Kenmoria because when nobody else provides helpful and useful feedback, they certainly do. That is what we need out of a GenSec member.

I will repeat myself from last time:
Attempted Socialism wrote:To blatantly piggy-bag on Bears, I will note that GenSec aren't chosen for their legislative prowess or enthusiasm, but rather their ability to adjudicate and develop the rules in a way that promotes engagement while not disrupting established precedent too much. Ability to write legal resolutions is not the same as ability to adjudicate and develop the rules. I would prefer new GenSec members to be clearly invested in the rules, whether as proponent or opponent of specific rules and rulings. This means placing emphasis on their activity when it concerns legality in drafts and in challenges, rather than how many resolutions or drafts they have authored. With that in mind, I think some diligence is due for the people who nominate: Would you trust your nominee to interpret, help with, adjudicate, and develop, the rule-set, in an impartial and engaging manner? What evidence can you point to, if you should convince someone who knows nothing of your nominee that this is the case? If you search the GA forum for a player name and "challenge" or "legality", what comes up?
As such there are several nominees who could be considered nominated for the wrong reasons; The number of resolutions they have gotten passed, the number of drafts they have posted, or how popular they are in general. A legislative record, enthusiasm for the game, or likability, are generally good, admirable traits, but they are not, on their own, qualifying for GenSec. Nice to have, not need to have, in other words.
With that in mind, I will support Wallenburg's nomination. Wallenburg is sometimes direct (At times bordering on abrasive), but they honestly and diligently engage with the rules, and their command of the rules, precedent, and already-passed legislation is impressive. They're able to both work within the existing rule-set and challenge rules or rulings based on the effects they will have on the game. And I believe they're able to deal fairly and impartially in challenges.

I have been away from the General Assembly for a bit, but I haven't seen too many rules discussions or legality challenges, which is the easiest heuristic for who would be good as GenSec. To those who are giving suggestions, can I ask you to explain why that nominee is good for GenSec, not just at the General Assembly game, but specifically at interpreting, adjudicate, and develop, the GA rules in an impartial and engaging manner?

If there has to be a GenSec, then We and the community can only hope that the new appointees are welcoming and willing to maintain a posture without exerting asymmetric comments over others.
Having followed up these Forums for around a year, We support the nomination of:
1) Kenmoria, who has been one of the few to genuinely and, dare say, selflessly, help new authors, of whose proposals most would not consider even addressing a word.
2) The Ice States, who, despite Us having several disagreements with throughout the year, was magnanimous enough to share their thoughts with Us regarding the WA system, and has also shown concern over the clarity of the rules - an issue that no one in GenSec seems to be willing to address and improve.

This isn’t the SC, so my words don’t really carry any weight, but, generally speaking, I support the nomination of Magecastle/The Ice States.

Based on my interactions with them, I believe that they’d be a fine addition to the GenSec team in the wake of these recent resignations.
