Burned American flag = art?

Postby Arkinesia » Tue Jun 01, 2010 5:50 pm

A friend who may or may not attend the high school depicted showed me this:

Art exhibit shows American flag with burnt edges.

Ironically the VFW sent a Vietnam vet to complain about it. Wasn't Vietnam protecting anyone but Americans, basically?

Basically, is the art disrespecting veterans, or are you inclined to side with the student who created it?

I think it probably can be classified as art, considering the intent.

People are allowed to complain though.

It's artistic expression. So what if people are opposed to it? The artist was obviously trying for that. Art is expression of what the artist wants to express, and clearly they wanted to express something that had to do with a singed American flag. You and others may even be viewing it the wrong way. It's quite possible the display wasn't based on anti-Americanism you know.

If the person creating it says it's art, it's art. It may be boring, meaningless, unoriginal and pretentious, but that doesn't stop it from being art.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with it, and burnt flags can be part of art...

That's not art. It's not illegal, but it's not art.

It is art. It is a creation with a certain aesthetical value and a defined symbolic meaning behind it.

It is also quite mediocre, without much depth, the idea has been done to death, is not too brillian on its execution, and it was probably just aiming for a bit of scandal, but since there are artists who have become household names by doing pretty much that, I can't be too harsh on a high school student for it.

(If I have sounded a bit like an art critic there, it may be because I'm an art critic. Only occasionally, and I'm absolutely mediocre at it, but at least I know some tricks of the trade) :p

Art =/= what you happen to like. Personally, this piece is a little boring, but that doesn't mean it isn't art.

Did I say, at any moment, that this isn't art? Nope. It is more than boring, to me, as an art historian, it is shyte. But what art is can be very subjective since there is no specific definition of what art is.
I don't particularly like it. I do recognize it passes for art, not good art, but mediocre.
