SPORTS: THE COUPE DU MONDE EXPECTED TO AFFECT CHAUSSE
ICA President Ken Griffith predicts a 33% to 60% decrease in attendance for July

As the 2023 chausse season nears the halfway point, the Imaguan Chausse Association is preparing for the 2023 IFF Coupe du Monde. Although in the past, the chausse season has overlapped with the Coupe du Monde, this year is different because the Imaguan national football team has qualified for the Coupe du Monde.

Ken Griffith, President of the Imaguan Chausse Association said at a press conference that "with the Coupe du Monde starting in only five days, I fully anticipate that it will significantly decrease attendance figures at our matches because many Imaguans will want to watch the Crossbearers compete for the very first time in the Coupe du Monde."

"While I, like many Imaguans, am proud that we have finally made it into the Coupe du Monde, as President of the Imaguan Chausse Association, I fully expect that the Coupe du Monde will affect attendance at our matches, which will in turn decrease revenue for our teams and for the ICA in general," Grifith explained.

However, he took steps to reassure reporters that the Imaguan Chausse Association is "not in any serious financial risk," saying that "we are still profitable, and although I expect that the 2023 season will not be as well-performing as previous seasons, we will remain profitable because we have been taking steps to minimize the effects of the Coupe du Monde on the ICA," and added that ITS will pay compensation to the ICA for matches pre-empted by Coupe du Monde matches.

"When you put all of that together, I think the Coupe du Monde is just a little bump on the road[i]," Griffith said. "[i]And given that we are nearing a position where we may be able to resume plans to expand the ICA that we paused sixteen years ago in light of the global economic climate of the time, I think the Coupe du Monde will not affect the Imaguan Chausse Association."

After ICA President Ken Griffith opened the floor to questions, a reporter from the Cuanstad Sentinel asked how much did the Imaguan Chausse Association expect attendance to decrease by.

"We are expecting somewhere between a 33% and 60% decrease in attendance for the month of July compared to last year," Griffith said. "Given the patriotic fervor we have been seeing across Imagua, I suspect that the latter figure may be more realistic, but most people who attend our matches and watch them on television are not fans of association football, which was why I'm optimistic that we will only see a 33% decrease."

A reporter from the Gazzetta di San Pietro asked if the Imaguan Chausse Association thought about cancelling or postponing matches in order to avoid a conflict between the ICA season and the Coupe du Monde.

"No: the Arucian Football League, of which the ICA is a member, hosts the Arucian Cup in late September, so postponing matches to a latter date is simply not an option," Griffith said. "Likewise, if we cancelled matches or shortened the season, Imaguans will not perform as well as other countries in the Arucian, which will mean that the Hegan Cup winner will be the first to be eliminated."

Finally, an ITS reporter asked Griffith if he expects that player performance will be affected by continuing the season during the Coupe du Monde.

"Possibly," Griffith said. "Some teams have reported that players are requesting time off so that they could go watch the Coupe du Monde, and while we have sent memos to restrict time off requests, I think the fact that this may be the only time Imagua will be in the CdM for years will lead some team managers to grant time off requests to people who really should not be taking time off."

Le Monde Exclusive: Varne interview..
The "greatest Gaullican manager in a generation" gives his thoughts on Ardesia 2023.

Roland Varre oversees a training exercise on "le champ".

Verlois, Gaullica - A crisp, blue morning day coats the Stade de Gaullice in rays of resplendent light. Across the green field, countless players adorned in the red, black and yellow jerseys of the Gaullican national team prepare - many for the second or third time - to participate in a 'Coupe du monde'. This time it will see them fly across the world to far-flung Ardesia.

Their regime is intense. Their training supervised by a lone figure standing along the white demarcated lines, adorned in a sleek suit of black. Their face is stern, watching, poignant and decisive. It is Roland Varne, widely praised in Gaullica as perhaps the greatest manager in generations, with a strict code of conduct and sensibility on the field. Known as "L'universitaire" (The Academic), he has been praised for his theoretical and practical understanding of football. And he is confident in the victory for "Les Croisés".

From behind spectacles, the academic watches the match unflinchingly. He observes every motion. Ever pass. Every hesitation. There is a meticulousness to him unmatched by many others. An outstretched hand and a stern gesture is enough to correct the mistake he has spotted; as the players know when their manager has words to say.

After the training, an air of jovialness takes over him. The stern academic turns into a content parent, shaking the hands of each of his players and congratulating them for a success, but that improvement is always possible. He presents charts highlighting this, talking about diet and fitness regimes, and the important of social and mental health.

Once the stadium is cleared, he turns to us to give him his full undivided attention. There is a glimmer of scepticism from behind the glasses; the honest reality of dealing with a lifetime of criticism.

And we ask away, with the question on the mind of every Gaullican in and out of the country. "Are we in a place to win?"

"Yes." His answer is without thought, without hesitation. "We are not the only ones. But we are certainly physically, mentally, spiritually, psychologically there. There are members of this squad who brought us to victory in 2015. Their skills are sharp, their minds sharper, and their capability unquestioning." There is a moment of cautious silence, he cleans his glasses with a white cloth, and continues. "That does not mean we are complacent. We will approach every game as if it were the final."

"Have you changed anything drastically since the last time we spoke to you about a Coupe du monde?"

The manager suppresses a chuckle. "We will not be having a repeat of the incident from last time. A zero tolerance policy towards all forms of discrimination."

A sigh of relief from everyone at home.

We discussed further things at length, including the relevancy of new training regimens, the upgrading of the grounds, the reshuffling of the team, the vice-captaincy of Jean-Noël Pascal (which Varne described as "thoroughly required, he has vision and determination"), and the new "reflective" nature of the Gaullican team. Varne described himself as being "very proud" of being part of wider initiatives that sought to introduce schemes and money into underprivileged communities, which has seen the likes of players from Gaullica's Ansene, Bahian and Rahelian communities come to the forefront of the team.

Finally, we discussed the idea of threats to the team. "Is there a team you think that is perhaps the biggest concern for us on the field?"

There was a long pause as he took a signature thoughtful stance, thumb and forefinger cupped by his chin. "Ardesia. Never underestimate the sheer power of the home-field advantage. There will be Ardesians everywhere, cheering them on. The atmosphere, the ambience, the... spirit is on their side. The spirit of 'an Ardese', as they say, I believe."
