NYC giving out free crack pipes

New York City is planning on putting out vending machines in several neighborhoods with contraceptives, first-aid kits, hygiene supplies, drug tests, Narcan for overdoses, and most controversially, crack pipes.

I'm on board with giving people easier access to all the other stuff, but crack pipes? If their goal is to people from using drugs then why would they give people a device that helps them use drugs? This doesn't make any sense to me.

Let me know yalls thoughts.

First it should be noted that the Miami Herald article merely states that the HHS denied that federal funding was or will be used to fund the purchase and/or distribution of crack pipes.

Reading a little more into it, it appears that several things are true,

1. There is a $30 million federal harm reduction program established in 2022 that provides funding for a variety of harm reduction activities, including providing smoking kits. According to the Biden administration, the program would not fund or reimburse the purchase of crack pipes.

2. A large number of harm reduction non-profit organisations provide smoking kits that contain crack pipes. Many of said organisations receive substantial funding from local and/or state governments (and also some older federal initiatives).

3. Many of said non-profit organisations would be eligible for the $30 million federal program.

4. The Washington Free Beacon made the conclusion that the federal program would de facto provide funding for the purchase and distribution of crack pipes.

I'll add that my general stance on harm-reduction is I support one-for-one syringe and needle exchanges, but I oppose giving out clean needles and/or syringes without the return of a dirty one.

New York City already has a municipal dead body disposal site, has had one for a long time, and will need it for the forseeable future.

That's not a knock against New York. It's just a natural consequence of having such a large population in one city. It becomes difficult to keep track of everyone.
