The World

In 1908, the first of the Silent appeared in NYC. A masked man, robbed a bank for thousands of dollars while bullets flew past him. He had immense power, granted to him by the mask he wears. It was a marvel that shocked the world. And when the second of the Silent appeared, he displayed the strength to toss a Ford Model T through the air with ease. As if he were throwing a football. This lead to a fundamental change in the world as masked super powered people, called Silents, grew in numbers. The world’s militaries created entire doctrines around the use of Silent soldiers. Organized crime flourished with help from super powered gangsters. And an unrelenting anarchist nearly brought the city of Chicago to ruin. But then, after a climactic battle between the two most powerful Silents in the world, changed the world back. And now, as the world approaches the end of the second Millennium, threats once thought unimaginable are returning. The year is 1994, and after being gone for almost forty years, the masks have returned.

The Premise

You as a player in this RP will be able to create a person, living in New York City in the year 1994, just as the Mayor announces a quarantine of the island of Manhattan. You can create a member of the Silent, and develop a unique power for your mask to grant you. Or you can portray a regular human and delve into the concept of living in a world with powered individuals. Or you could be a member of the government, dealing with the unprecedented return of Silents. Or you can be a harrowed detective, trying to find the truth about the murder of a member of the Silent. And any combination of them all is possible. Underneath this all will be an adjoining thread, the grave threat of new beings coming from beyond the Veil, as well as the struggles of a quarantined NYC. Will you be a hero and fight for truth and justice? Or will you be a villain, out for their own gain? The choice is yours.

Silents themselves are best described as people with unique powered abilities. The powers come from the mysterious masks that they wear, that both grant them their powers but also render them effectively mute. They can still communicate with a form of telepathy, though each Silent's ability to do so varies greatly. The mask is something that can, generally, be taken off or placed back on by the Silent at will. And the powers only work while the mask is on. But, masks cannot be removed against the will of the silent. Once it is on, you would more easily be able to remove their head from their body before being able to remove the mask from their face. Further, wearing a mask far too often can make the mask impossible to remove even for the Silent. As it will fuse to their face. And, if the Silent themselves dies, the mask they wore will die as well. Becoming a soft and fleshy blob that decays relatively quickly. All of this is important to know if you intend to portray, or combat Silents over the course of this RP.

The History

In the year 1908, the first of "The Silent" appeared in New York City. A man with a painted white ivory mask walked into a bank, and without speaking a word single handedly took down three armed security guards and stole over one hundred thousand dollars. Equivalent to over three million USD today. The fired bullet after bullet at him, but none of them had any effect. It was as if they passed right around him, with a mind of their own. It was a full year before another of the Silent appeared in Tampa Bay Florida. At first people thought it was the same masked man, but when this man displayed feats of strength well beyond what the first could accomplish, including throwing a ford model T twenty meters with one hand, they knew it was something different. By the year 1915, as the world was embroiled in the first world war, the name "The Silent", for the many masked and powered individuals became widespread throughout most of the known world. It is said that the assassin of Franz Ferdinand was one of the Silent. Prohibition of the early 1920s in America led to organized crime being wide spread in the growing nation. Gangs utilized the Silent to their advantage. It was during this time that the first demasking occurred. And some of the truth of the silent was revealed to the world. The Silent are men and women, that when they wear their mask, trade away their ability to speak, for grandiose powers of seemingly magical origins.

Two major events changed the course of the 20th century. The second world war, was the first war to feature Silent Soldiers. Adolf Hitler applying them as part of the Nazi party's SS division. America and Russia were the only other two nations that were capable of creating similar forces. The soviet uprising actually being bolstered by Silent revolutionaries. The Pacific front was ended when an American team of 500 of the Silent, including the widely known Ruth Hawthorne, were deployed in Tokyo. The city was destroyed within hours. And when a Soviet Russian deployment of 1700 of the Silent wiped through the Manchurian front, the feeling of being pinned by forces well beyond them caused a swift Japanese surrender. The second event was the battle of Chicago which occurred in 1949. Where the largest families of organized crime clashed in the mafia run city. Causing untold damage and the "Second Great Chicago Fire". It caused the formation of a federal peace keeping agency, using Silent police to fight Silent criminals, known as the Federal Bureau of Silent Suppression or FBSS. Most other nations quickly followed suit in adding the Silent to their police forces and militaries over time. The United Kingdom, instituted their Silent Registry in the year 1948. In 1949, The Korean civil war broke out. The north, lead by an anarchist silent, nearly conquered the democratic south. Were it not for American intervention, the south would not exist today. This war also marks the first use of Silents by China. The Korean civil war came to a grinding conclusion in 1952. The soviets, had an armistice with the Americans and chose not to participate in the war. America's superior trained Silents dominated the Chinese and Korean Silents. the Korean Peninsula remains a unified democratic nation to this day.

In 1956, a man named Carter Knight caused havoc and destruction throughout the city of Chicago. This destruction was in the name of two stated goals, to destroy the corrupt government suppressing Silents throughout the nation and destroying the being beyond the Veil. Carter’s appearance was quickly followed by a being called the Herald. The Herald murdered numerous people in horrific ways, and seemed like a sign of a massively greater threat to the entire world. It took the combined efforts of Ruth Hawthorne, Francis McArthur, Rozalin Harkner, Ruth Morgan, as well as several agents of the FBSS, managed to defeat this Herald. Learning in the process that this Herald was merely a disciple of the being beyond the Veil.

A final confrontation between Carter Knight, and Ruth Hawthorne led to both of them going beyond the Veil and disappearing. Little is known about how the pair went to this alternate dimension, or what happened when they went there. But both were presumed dead when neither appeared again for over a decade. The moment the pair passed through the Veil, the masks of every single Silent on the planet, died. They went limp, and stopped granting powers to their wielders. Most masks were confiscated by the Federal government on orders of President Douglas MacArthur. The Silent menace, as the world knew it, was over.

One year after Silents disappeared from the world, the Vietnam war began. The influence of Communism grew throughout Asia in the chaos of the changing world. America got involved, but the war went particularly poorly. In the wake of the loss of silents, America as well as most other world powers pivoted into a new battle doctrine focused heavily on armored vehicles. These battle tactics proved to be wholly counter productive in the jungles of Vietnam. Although, the power of these vehicles made it impossible for the Communist northern Vietnam to advance. In 1980, after over twenty years of war, a ceasefire was reached, establishing two independent Vietnamese nations. The Northern People’s Republic of Vietnam, and South Vietnam.

President MacArthur serves two terms in office. His crowning achievement is signing the civil rights act of 1959. Which would set the stage for some of the greatest reforms in equality between all groups. After MacArthur’s two terms, John F. Kennedy served two terms as well. During his terms President Kennedy oversaw the first ever manned mission to the moon. Landing on the surface in August of 1970. He also spent much of his time in office dismantling organized crime. The mobs and mafias of the nation’s cities, once emboldened by Silents, fell apart without their presence. They could no longer fight off the power of the law and were broken before the end of Kennedy’s first term.

In 1986, there is a terrible explosion in the Chernobyl region of the USSR. The disaster was responsible for countless lives lost. And after an extensive investigation, as well as pressure from outside forces to reveal the truth behind the incident, it was discovered that the Russians were experimenting of deceased masks that they had collected from the people of their nation. The details of the experiment, remain unknown as the scientists directly involved perished in the explosion. But the repercussions of it were immeasurable. The total deaths attributed to the event is roughly five thousand. Though some believe that true number is even higher.

The current date is June 30th, 1994. Grunge music it at the peak of popularity, despite the recent and tragic death of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain. Friends just wrapped up airing its first season. President Lee R. Edwards has created a free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. And JNCO jeans are all the rage.

Just months earlier, a rift opened up in New York City. Out of this rift came Ruth Hawthorne, as well as seemingly an untold number of new masks. Now, slowly, people are learning that the masks have returned. Silents are a presence in the world once again. And the threats that came with them in the past, are not far behind. As such, we begin our story with a quarantined New York City. The bridges are closed and for the moment, everyone within the city is stuck. Just as these threats are ready to make their appearance.

Rules

1. No meta gaming or godmodding. This one is obvious.
2. OP's word is law. I'm an open guy and like people to have their freedom but you gotta respect that if I say no it means no.
3. Respect other players both in the forum and on discord. Needless insults will get you kicked.
4. PVP elements must be agreed upon by both parties, and any results need to be agreed upon. If an agreement cannot be reached, then OP intervention will decide the best outcome for the story as a whole.
5. All powers have drawbacks. No one just gets free strength. The stronger your power, the stronger the limitation you need to provide with it
6. Sadly, there are some banned powers, done so for the sake of making an interesting story/world that won't be exploited. This list is not exhaustive and can be added to at any time. Mind Control, control of subatomic particles, Time travel, omniscience.

At ten points they can take tank shells with ease. Similarly, a 5 in telepathy allows for general communication with most people. A 1 only allows baser emotional understanding. Anything above a ten will be almost transcendent mental communication and understanding.

Name: The Consultant
Age: 78
Nation of birth: Canada
Silent? (yes or no): Formerly
Occupation: Intelligence Officer and Advisor, formerly retired
Moral Alignment: Good
Height: 5’10
Weight: 172lbs
Appearance (img in spoiler pls):

Character history: A former silent who lost his powers at the conclusion of the Chicago Affair along with the rest of the superpowered community. Rumor has it the Consultant was once one of the leading Silent’s of the Second World War, perhaps second only in power to Ruth Hawthorne. What is known about him is that he’s a naturalized American citizen, originally born in Canada. Married, with children and grandchildren of his own, the Consultant retired in the 1980’s after a fight with liver cancer in order to spend more time with his family.

This was after a long and distinguished career as an advisor, analyst, foreign liaison, and case officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. The Consultant was considered politically reliable, driven, intelligent, and with a ruthless edge that had been well honed during his service. Some of the greatest intelligence and special operations plays over the last several decades have had his hand in them at one point or another. It came as little surprise to him that he was called out of retirement to handle one last assignment as a special advisor on the NYC Quarantine. Few living know more about the veil and silents than the consultant, and fewer still about Ruth Hawthorne. All in all, this aging warhorse wields more power than his appearance and simple title as ‘Advisor of Quarantine Operations’ would suggest. Time will tell if he can keep a lid on the crisis.

Personal goals: Make contact with Ruth Hawthorne, investigate the rift and masks, keep NYC from falling into anarchy or an overwhelming government response.

Silent Power (if applicable): none anymore

Limitation/drawback: he’s bloody old.

Name: Arthur Ortega
Age: 22
Nation of birth: America
Silent? (yes or no): Yes
Occupation: University Student
Moral Alignment: Neutral-Good
Height: 5’9
Weight: 170lbs
Appearance (img in spoiler pls):

Character history: Born in Tucson to lawyers Manuel and Mary (nee Hendricks) Ortega, Arthur was named after the King of Arthurian legend on account of his father’s romantic streak. He named him hoping the boy would be full of fire and vigour but much to his chagrin, young Arthur was mild and soft spoken instead. Still, he applied himself diligently and with intelligence and was possessed of a quiet charisma that made people listen when he chose to speak at all.

Pushed on by his father, Arthur won a scholarship to the prestigious Columbia university in New York City and found himself a fourth year law student when the rift opened and he found himself in possession of a mask. He finds the world tumbling about around him, and wondering if this is a chance to be more than he was. To perhaps be a hero like his father envisioned. Does New York… does the world even need heroes anymore?

Personal goals: to understand who he is and what he wants, and to survive the quarantine.

Silent Power (if applicable):

Attainment of Physical Perfection:
A strange power to be sure. When Arthur wears his mask, his body begins to seek the pinnacle of human perfection. In order to do this, Arthur’s body learn’s by seeing. While wearing his mask, Arthur can duplicate any feat a human being can do long as he can observe it. The simpler the technique or feat, the easier it is for his body to improve itself or imprint the muscle memory to accomplish it. Theoretically, Arthur could achieve the very peak of human physical potential if he were to witness enough feats of strength, speed, stamina and so on. It’s also plausible that he could learn any number of fighting techniques.

Limitation/drawback:
The body can only be improved by observing things with the mask on, nothing can be gained from Arthur’s maskless memories. As the improvements are made and the techniques are learned subconsciously, it will be difficult to achieve a number of them while thinking about them closely. Further, if something happens too fast to be observed or Arthur is otherwise dazed or unable to observe the physical fear or technique, he will gain nothing. From there, Arthur cannot duplicate powers or learn any ability that is beyond the natural potential of a human being. While he has the potential to be as fast, strong or physically skilled as a human being can be, he can never exceed that save for the durability his mask naturally provides him.

Name: Liana Fortier
Age: 27
Nation of birth: United States
Silent? (yes or no): Yes
Occupation: Heiress/Biologist
Moral Alignment: Neutral Evil
Height: 6'3
Weight: 200 Pounds
Appearance (img in spoiler pls):
Image
Character history:
Though she was born into privilege, Liana has been fighting for most of her left. One of the daughters in a large family, whose father is the owner of a large Reasearch and Development conglomerate. Liana felt a need to fight for her busy father's attention and approval, in some sense literally. While her brothers were more refined and cordial, her sisters had a way with setling disputes with their fists.

For Liana's part, she turned that inclination towards something useful, pursuing training in Judo from an early age and being good enough at it that she managed to compete for the United State in the women's debut for the sport in the barcelona olympics in 1992.

Education-wise, Liana pursued a university education in biophysics starting from 17 years old. She's recently earned her PhD, which she earned from researching the varied ways in which the bodies of Silents often showed enduring differences in their bodies between themselves and the average person, even years after the masks had stopped working.

Luck would have it, she would find herself on the 'wrong' side of the quarantine when Ruth Hawthorne and variety of new masks arrivied in New York. She'd soon find one and put it on.

Personal goals:

Modify herself to a super-human form: Liana is already an intelligent and well physically endowed woman, but that doesn't mean she couldn't be smarter, that she couldn't be stronger. She doesn't seek simply being the best a human being can be, she wants to be super-human, not only while wearing the mask, but when the mask comes off and she's left with her genetically molded body.

Of course, being the best means being able to beat the best. She'll gladly hurt, maybe even kill, 'fellow' silents in confrontations to test herself. It all depends on who or what rubs her the wrong way, or worse yet, stands in her way. Notably, she as of now has little interest in modifying her self so as to be visibly different than a human being, even if she intends on pushing what's 'skin deep' far beyond that.

Silent Power (if applicable): Biokinesis, the ability to copy, manipulate and enduringly modify biological matter down to their genetic code.

Limitation/drawback: Range is limited to a 2 meter radius, must be touching sentient organisms to manipulate them, can not manipulate the biology of concious unwilling individuals with masks on and can not outright stop bodily functions required for survival (no stopping hearts, breathing, brain function, etc.)

Durability (how hard you can get hit without taking significant damage): 10
Intelligence (how well you use your power): 5
Silent Power Strength (raw power level of the silent ability): 5
Telepathy (how well you can communicate with other silents): 1
Resolve (How hard is it to keep you down): 4

Name: Gerald Welsh
Image

Age: 26
Nation of birth: United States of America
Silent: Yes
Occupation: Mortician/Medium
Moral Alignment: Chaotic neutral
Height: 1.74m
Weight: 68Kg

Character history: Gerald was found in a basket with nothing but a blanket and a card with the name 'Gerald Symanski' on it, on the steps of New York Presbytarian. The card explained that his mother had gotten pregnant but had no way to care for a child, and as such had left it there for loving parents. As a foster child, he was taken in by the Welsh family, who took him in and, while being honest about his parentage, did everything to make him feel welcome. He was one of the family, with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins who loved him like he was one of their own. And when his maternal grandmother died when he was 14, it truly hit him. For a while, he became morbidly obsessed with death, to the point that his parents started to worry, but in the end it settled down and became part of his many hobbies, taking him to tombs and graveyards all over the state.

Becoming a mortician seemed like a natural choice, not just because of his fascination, but mostly because he thought he would be one of the few people who could actually stand the presence of death. And so he did. It was 1994 when a body was brought in bearing a mask which apparently only Gerald could see. He felt it call to him, and that night, New York was put under quarantine.
Personal goals: To make some money off his work as a medium, either by being paid by people to do the work, or by having dead people tell them where their secret treasures are hidden.
Silent Power: Gerald's mask allows Gerald to communicate with the dead. With the body present, and Gerald wearing the mask, a spirit will appear, able to converse with him and share information they knew in life. At the moment, Gerald requires a full body, or at least a head, to be able to use his power, but as he learns more, he will be able to find out that any biological material works for this purpose.
Limitation/drawback: The deceased must have a face upon which the mask can rest. Additionally, the deceased is not compelled to answer questions. Dying, as it turns out, makes people as likely to cooperate as they are to disregard the mortal world altogether. As such, people will only answer the bell once, and Gerald can only use his power once per deceased person.

Name: Elisabeth (Lizzy) Partright
Image

Age: 35
Nation of birth: United States of America
Silent: Yes
Occupation: Public prosecutor
Moral Alignment: Lawful good
Height: 1.60m
Weight: 58kg
Appearance:

Character history: Elisabeth was born in 1959, five years before the civil rights act was enacted, to two loving, working class parents. Her mother worked as a cleaner in Manhattan, but commuted out of Queens. Her father was a mechanic, but had lost his shop due to a permit dispute with the city and who therefore had to turn to wage labour. Having lost his brother, Elisabeth's uncle, in Korea, the family was happy when the Silents disappeared three years before Elisabeth was born, and in fact, the euphoria that came with that moment was what led Martha and Bob Partright to have kids in the first place. They would have four, in fact, with Elisabeth being the second; after an older sister and before two younger brothers. Melinda, her sister, managed to get herself a bar in Queens to run. Her younger brothers, Michael and Wesley wanted to follow in their father's footsteps and become mechanics themselves, and set up shop together. This left all the money Martha and Bob had saved to send their kids to college to Elisabeth, who hoped to make her parents proud that way.

She got through college with a law degree and first did some odd jobs, first in legal aid and later as a law clerk. However, her goal was to enter the justice system and perhaps do some good that way, especially since she sought to change the institution from the inside. She was made assistant district attorney in august 1993, making her quite new on the job.
Personal goals: Keeping some semblance of order in Manhattan during the day, while at night doing some vigilante-work for those cases that she can't prove in court or that will take too long.
Silent Power: Elisabeth is a powerful electromancer, meaning that she can charge herself with electricity and either use it to power some device, or to expel it all at once in the form of an attack. This also enables her to control, to an extent, electromagnetism.
Limitation/drawback: The amount of electricity thus harnessed is limited, not only by physical capacity, but also by pragmatics. Being too highly charged means Elisabeth cannot touch or be near electronic circuits without blowing them up, or charging conductive materials she is close to. She might not even be able to touch human beings, or stand in the rain, in fear of electrocuting people.

Name: Charles Morrow
Age: 26
Nation of birth: American
Silent?: Yes
Occupation: Unemployed, formerly a toxicologist
Moral Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 98 pounds
Appearance:
Charles and his Mask.

Character history:
Charles Morrow was once the perfect child. A star student, a graduate on top of his class, and someone with a promising career. He had a clear path of greatness ahead of himself, until a tragedy, that many would call a blessing, struck.

There was a chemical spill at work, one that was both volatile and extremely reactive. It was a disaster that would have taken his life, if not for the fact that he was saved when he put on a gas mask that glowed a devilish red in the noxious fog. He lived, once his breathing became normal, but perhaps the better way to call it was that he changed.

His body was immediately hijacked by the mask, turning it into a laboratory and factory for his power. His bones became production sites for reagents, his organs became processors and filters, his blood became the solvent for the entire affair. His days onwards were nothing but pain and confusion. When he first tried to take off the Mask, he immediately experienced the side effects. Vomitting, stomach pains, headaches, and almost suffering toxic shock if not for the fact that he placed the Mask back on.

Now that New York is quarantined Charles is going from place to place, unable to live a proper life without help. Should he reach out to fellow Silents? Would the government take care of him, for better or worse, if they'll discover him? Only time will tell.

Personal goals: To be able to live normally with his power and use it for good
Silent Power:
  • Body of Hermes Trimegistus: Charles has the ability to synthesize any kind of chemical compound or mixture within his body, whether it be poison, acid, medicine, helpful compounds or otherwise. The compounds that he produces are much more potent and are supernaturally better than their "natural" counterparts.
  • Alchemic Immunity: Charles is immune to the side effects of his produced chemical reagents as long as his mask is on. He is immune to poisons and diseases, as well as acidic and basic compounds.
  • Caustic Blood: Charles' blood has been transmuted into a chemical slurry that is harmful to life.
  • Spinal Tubes: Charles can grow out four glass-like tubes from his back to facilitate the transfer and introduction of his alchemical concoctions. These tubes can grow out up to 30 feet outwards, and they are quite prehensile and can be used for fluid intake. The ends can produce sharp needles for injection purposes.
Limitation/drawback:
  • Death Without the Mask: Charles can only stay alive due to wearing his Mask. Removing his Mask removes his immunity to his own alchemical concotions and would lead to a slow and agonizing death.
  • Irrevocable Transmutation: The changes in Charles's physiology is permanent and is much cause for pain.
  • Unholy Hunger and Thirst: Charles needs to consume a staggering amount of food and drink everyday to sustain his body.
  • Feeble Body and Mind: The transmutation of Charles's body has left him extremely fragile and weak. His durability and resolve stats cannot be raised from zero except by supernatural means, and only temporarily.

For Silent Characters only

Power levels, divide 25 points among these five attributes. The human baseline for each of the attributes is a 1, for an example, a 5 is the minimum durability for your Silent to be bulletproof. At ten points they can take tank shells with ease. Similarly, a 5 in telepathy allows for general communication with most people. A 1 only allows baser emotional understanding. Anything above a ten will be almost transcendent mental communication and understanding.

Name: Keegan Marsh ("The Hunter")
Age: 51
Nation of birth: America
Silent?: Yes
Occupation: United States Marine (formerly)
Moral Alignment: Chaotic-neutral
Height: 5'9
Weight: 160.2lbs
Appearance:
Image

Character history: Keegan Marsh was born in New York City in 1943. His father, Vance Marsh, was a soldier, serving in the United States Marine Corps. He died during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. At the time, he didn't know if his father had left him something. His mother, however, wanted to show it to Keegan once he reached the age of 18.

Once he reached the age of 18, he decided to join the United States Marine Corps and went through six months of training. Once he graduated from the marine boot camp, he decided to go to a university and spent five years as a law student. Before he went to the university, his mother gave him the thing his father left for him. A mask and a note In the note, there are a bunch of stories from his father while fighting in France. From the note, he found out that his father was a Silent soldier. The note ended during the Battle of the Bulge. No note whatsoever was written during the battle, except for the title of the empty page (Mission in the Ardennes).

Keegan decided to keep the mask, believing that he could use it one day. However, in 1956, he learned about the chaos in Chicago and the fact that his mask wouldn't work anymore. That also means the power possessed by Keegan's father during the war has also vanished. Keegan decided to keep the powerless mask, hoping to find a way to fix it. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1960, right after he graduated from the university.

Keegan fought during the Vietnam War since 1965 before he got replaced by a bunch of fresh soldiers. He experienced many things from the war, including mass genocide, ambush, and how he almost died from an American bomb. When he returned home, he got married, and then have his first and only son in 1973. Since the war has ended, Keegan begins to forget about the mask and his ambition to fix it. The Chernobyl explosion and the Russian experiment has also proved that it is impossible for the mask to be fixed.

Years later, he moved to New York City to accompany his only son and decided to stay in his father's house. After three years of staying there, however, there was news about new Silent masks, and now Keegan found himself in possession of a new Silent mask. He feared that if the masks fell on the wrong people, they would only cause chaos and destruction, just like what happened in Chicago. He decided that he had to use the power of the mask in order to prevent it from happening again and to avenge the death of his father's mask on all the Silent that existed in this world. In the last few months, Keegan spent his nights hunting down the Silent and then granted himself the name "Hunter".
Personal goals: Prevent the Silent from causing any problems with any action possible, no matter how bad his action is.
Silent Power: Keegan's mask gave him the ability he called Touch-to-Turn. It means, he can turn things he touch, took a part of it, and then turned it into things he desired. He often used them to create arrows and shield wall.
Limitation/drawback: Unlike other masks, Keegan's mask might be more dangerous, considering that once someone puts it on, it will be hard for them to throw the mask away or to destroy it, until the purpose of the mask is fulfilled. Keegan's mask is highly radioactive, which means wearing it too often is very dangerous and might kill the one wearing it. The other weakness is his shield wall. Whenever his shield wall got hit by another Silent power, it could destroy the power that hit the wall, but it would be destroyed in the process, meaning that he had to form a new shield wall every time he got attacked.

Name: Chase Marsh
Age: 21
Nation of birth: America
Silent?: Yes
Occupation: University student
Moral Alignment: Neutral-good
Height: 6'5
Weight: 196.7lbs
Appearance:
Image

Character history: Chase Marsh is the son of a Vietnam War veteran and a former USMC colonel, Keegan Marsh. He was born in Rochester, the place where his father met his mother and where they decided to marry. His family would later move to Washington, D.C.

Chase was a stubborn and bossy kid while also being one of the smartest in his class. When he entered middle school, his father gave him a puppy, which would become his best friend when he was in middle school and when he was in high school. Chase would be known in his high school for joining his high school's basketball team and for being a self-defense student. His behavior has never changed, though.

He finally graduated from high school, and he won a scholarship to Columbia University in the research and experimental psychology major. His father decided to accompany him there and decided to stay at Chase's grandfather's house. He's currently a 3-year student at Columbia University, and he found himself in possession of a mysterious mask. He decided to learn about the mask first before finally deciding to keep it. He only tried the mask once in order to find out the power it holds.

He learned about his grandfather from his grandfather's note, and he wanted to be a hero just like him. However, was it even necessary? After all, nothing, not even a mask, could change his life forever. Could it, though?
Personal goals: Keep the mask and his power in secret, and find out what he would do with it.
Silent Power: Chase's mask allowed him to control fire around him, either as a weapon or as a shield, without feeling the heat from the fire he controlled.
Limitation/drawback: He cannot create fire from nothingness, and thus he needed a fire source. That is why he always brought a lighter with him. The other limitation is that Chase can only control the fire that he touched, which means he needs to touch the fire first before he is able to control it. The fire itself can only be used as a weapon or as a shield within the 5-meter range, and it will disappear into thin air once it goes outside the 5-meter range and after one minute, which means Chase will have to make a newer weapon or shield every minute in the middle of a combat.

Character App

Name: Adoree Levinson Harkner
(Also known as: Adoree L. Harkner, Adoree Harkner, A.L. Harkner)
Age: 19 (Born May 9th, 1975)
Nation of Birth: US (Joliet, IL)
Silent: Yes
Occupation: College student, designer apprentice
Moral Alignment: Chaotic Good
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 142lbs
Appearance:
Credited to Kataaaaaaaa on Pinterest

Character History:
Nothing about Adoree’s life has been simple. His mother, an Italian-Catholic girl from Chicago, and his father, a Jewish boy from Queens, found themselves with Adoree when they were 17 and 18 respectively. While his mother was glad to have her new son, her father resented that he had to struggle both with law school and with being a teen father. After many brutal fights, the parents decided to put their son into the foster system when he was about 5.

Jumping between families made growing-up a much more difficult experience for the boy. He refused to take any new names from other families, he did not want to make friends with any new siblings, and he learned how to fight by watching older boys at school. For a long time, Adoree thought that fighting was the only thing he would learn at school. Yet he had a keen mind, and a great eye for detail, which caused for him to be self-conscious of his ragged, often oversized clothing which he wore to school.

But then he also was determined to change it. To control it.

Snatching the sewing magazines of one foster mom on the way out of the house, he would spend his nights struggling to get good grades while also teaching himself to sew patterns. Eventually, he found small ways to convert his unattractive, baggy clothing into shirts, jackets, and accessories he was proud to display. By the time he was in high school, Adoree had defined himself and a dream-to be a fashion designer in New York.

First, however, he had to move past his hot temper and his need to win fights. His grades wavered repeatedly as he spent time between completing assignments and sitting in the principal’s office explaining his latest scrap. One fateful afternoon, after a particularly vicious fight exploded in the auditorium during a jazz concert recital, the teacher dragged him out of the rubble kicking, screaming, and crying, and understood the pain which had caused for his temper to explode.

And so Adoree met Rozalin Harkner, once a performer and musician in her younger days and now a jazz teacher at his school.

Two misfits gained a bond which was good for both of them. Adoree had no permanent family, Rozalin had no children. Both of them had an uncanny determination to survive, and both of them had their mysteries. These similarities drove the boy to make his teacher proud, both by making better grades and by gradually improving his behavior. And Roz, now 64 and having lived without children for long enough, secretly went to the state of Illinois to begin the long, arduous process of adopting him from his latest foster family.

When Adoree was 17, Rozalin came to retrieve him with the signed adoption papers. His foster mother at the time came for them, attacking both of them with a knife while two of his older foster siblings tried to beat the newcoming adoptive parent to a pulp. Six police cars, three arrests, and one long hospital stay for Adoree later, he was now a Harkner, and freedom was both Rozalin’s and his.

Now with his schooling completed, with much better grades, and a growing portfolio of designs under his belt, Adoree has headed to New York to try and follow his dream of becoming a designer.

Personal Goals: To become a fashion designer, to understand his body image, to make his adoptive parent proud.

Silent Powers:
Adoree’s mask appeared one day in a basket of fabrics he was using to sew a dress for a home ec class. His feelings toward the mask are ambivalent, but he would like for it to help him with his work.
More Bling for Your Buck: The mask gives Adoree a boost to physical attacks (punches, kicks, throws) for every accessory he is wearing (earrings, necklaces, watches). Statistically this would be a +1 boost to Silent Power Strength.
The Weaver: With a touch, Adoree can unravel the fabric from another object or article of clothing, and weave it into an object he can imagine.
Silk Hiding Steel: Adoree’s clothing becomes almost steel-like when he is wearing the mask, adding +2 to his Durability for each additional article of clothing.
Limitations/Drawbacks:
Adoree’s weaving ability is limited by the amount of fabric he has. For example, he cannot make a table out of a pair of socks. If a weapon, such as a bow and arrows or a gun, has additional parts, he should have enough fabric to create all of those parts.
Adoree does not get the Silk Hiding Steel feature if he is not wearing any clothes.
He cannot weave an item he has never seen OR that he cannot imagine.
He cannot weave people or living objects.
The Weaver requires touch, not just sight.

In 1986, Keegan (now with the rank of colonel) learned about the Chernobyl explosion and failed Russian experiments. He decided to illegally, hire someone to gather some information, and after he got the important information, he would try to change the formula a little bit. After experimenting on several confiscated masks for several times, he would later find the way to fix the mask and decided to fix his father's mask.

He resigned from the United States Army, knowing well that they might find out about his illegal experiments and about his mask. He knows the side effects of the mask if he wears it too often, thanks to his father's note (he didn't know if his mask was more dangerous than before the power of the mask vanished).

The fire itself can only be used as a weapon or as a shield within the 5-meter range, and it will disappear into thin air once it goes outside the 5-meter range and after one minute, which means Chase will have to make a newer weapon or shield every minute in the middle of a combat.

Hey there! So I love your app but there is a significant conflict. The masks, being effectively living things, once dead stay dead. I love the idea of trying to bring one back, but it sadly wouldn't be possible. If you'd like to alter it so Keegan gets a mask of his own, then I think I would be good to accept this. feel free to join the discord linked above if you have any more questions.

He moved to New York City to accompany his only son and decided to stay in his father's house. After three years of staying there, however, there was news about new silent masks. Keegan feared that if the masks fell on the wrong people, they would only cause chaos and destruction, just like what happened in Chicago. For the last few months, Keegan spent his nights hunting down the Silent and then granted himself the name "Hunter".
Limitation/drawback: Keegan's mask was not one of those that came out of the rift, which makes it very imperfect. Unlike other masks, Keegan's mask might be more dangerous, considering that once someone puts it on, it will be hard for them to take the mask off (even though they can still control the power). Unlike other masks too, Keegan's mask is highly radioactive, which means wearing it too often is very dangerous and might kill the one wearing the mask. His other weakness is his shield wall. Whenever his shield wall got hit by another Silent power, it would hold the power, but it would be destroyed in the process, meaning that he had to form a new shield wall every time he got attacked.

(Also known as: Adoree L. Harkner, Adoree Harkner, A.L. Harkner)
Age: 19 (Born October 9th, 1975)

Moral Alignment: Chaotic neutral
Height: 1.74m

Name: Dorothy Anne Roy
Age: 67
Nation of birth: United States
Silent? (yes or no): no
Occupation: socialite, heiress, investor
Moral Alignment: neutral evil
Height: 5'11
Weight: 175
Appearance: link

Character history:

Dorothy Anne Roy is a woman of wealth and influence and has held a prominent place in New York City's upper echelons for decades. The heiress to a family fortune built on banking and astute land investments, she has a dark past that's accentuated with rumors and scandals that follow her to this day. Her story really begins with her involvement in the transformation of the NYC neighborhood of Washington Heights, a neighborhood marred by the "white flight" of the '60s and '70s and plagued by the drug crisis of the '80s. Allegedly, Dorothy used these events to her advantage and rumors suggest she even orchestrated them. These crises caused property values to plummet and allowed her to acquiring vast swaths of land for her own portfolio. Now, she stands as the sole significant landowner in the neighborhood. She continues to exercise sway over the local governing bodies that conveniently overlook any issues related to her properties.

Speculations about Dorothy's connections with the powerful and influential reverberate throughout the city. Her brother's various high-profile positions within the previous Reagan Administration only encouraged rumors to expand her political power from Washington Heights to Washington D.C. From politicians to business magnates, she supposedly navigates the intricacies of power by hosting exclusive gatherings in her Penthouse Apartment overlooking Central Park. Here, lucrative deals and political alliances are forged under the guise of glamorous soirées. The moniker "Duchess of New York" was initially coined as a derogatory term by her tenants, but it took on a life of its own as Dorothy wholeheartedly embraced it. Her vanity is evident in her opulent lifestyle, but it is magnified by an expansive jewelry collection that boasted tiaras and gemstones once worn by European royalty. Each piece held its own story, and many are rumored to have been paid in blood.

Yet, Dorothy's reputation is far from unanimous. To many, she epitomizes greed and manipulation: an emblem of the ills that plague society. To others, she is a force to be admired: a woman in a man's world. Her business acumen and ability to navigate complex political landscapes are indeed not for the faint of heart. The dichotomy of public opinion only added to the fascination surrounding her.

Personal goals:
