Centrism is right-wing here in the U.S. because we have the Democrats (a center-right party much like the Torries in the UK) and we have the Republicans (A far right party).

If you're an "enlightened centrist" in the United States, congratulations, you're just solidly right-wing and authoritarian.

The US dems are more similar to Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada, which like other social liberal parties is center to center-left on the political spectrum. Also the GOP is right-wing but not far right.

So while it's true that someone that is between both parties would be center-right, this doesn't mean they're solidly right-wing or authoritarian

Abstracting from where to locate that specific poster's politics, no. In New Zealand, the only people that care about guns are culture warriors trying to use American talking points. Such people are universally right wing alleged libertarians.

That does not match up with the majority of centrists or people in America at all, and I believe that this misconception stems from spending too much time online, watching the news, and arguing with radicals on both the far-left and the far-right online. I often see people arguing over the same issues in different threads about different events/policies. It is not very healthy, and I wish there was a way to have discourse on this site without both sides demonizing their opponent.
