How would your nation's soldier, officer or whatever, feel about occupying the nation above you. Would he be proud that he brought the peace? Or would he be sad about the needless war? Or maybe he would be delignted to loot? Or maybe his words here would be the last, before he is killed by angry guerrillas... or gorillas?

Why the hell did they send us here? There's nothing but sand and literal shit here. And-and, Ey Elahar, its not only the sand is awful, We had to wear these awful masks because the desert environment is just that harsh. Tough? Nah, they were like.. they were pretty 'outdated' for our terms, i never seen 'em since the great war^[1]– well, i didn't live in that period so yes, i was making shit up, but actually, they're.. pretty 'outdated' in our eyes. I gotta give it to them for their masks though, they did a great job making a faceless and cold army. They look pretty awesome, but i wonder how it affects their field of view or properly aim with one, because.. they're not actually bad shooters either, they know how to aim.

The Aerlanican Soldier, grizzled and annoyed, smokes a cigarette as he stands in front of the burnt out building. With a grimace and a sigh, he turns to his comrade beside him as she braids her hair.

"Hey...why are we here?" The first soldier (Let's call him Smokes) asked, eliciting a strange look from the woman.

"Huh?" She asks, finishing up her work and placing her helmet back on her head, grabbing her ICR-3b and checking the capacitors. "What do you mean by that?"

"Like...why are we here?" The first asked again, and the second soldier (let's call her Braids for the time being) shrugged.

"Beats me, I suppose maybe because in the strange cosmos of the universe there was a strange series of events that eventually resulted in the goldilocks conditions of life, and for some reason us hard-headed children of bitches dragged out sorry asses out of primordial soup and invented a dumb thing called war. Then we got good at it, then diplomatic relations between two random states broke down and we shipped our asses across the star speckled expanse to invade and kick the teeth in of a random island on a random ass planet."

Braids shrugged.

"I s'pose we're here because a strange series of events led to some strange continuum of major and minor events, that eventually resulted in us standing here in front of..." she peered at the sign of the building, "...the Alris National Bank...and just...talking. Who knows? maybe if someone way back when sneezed we'd be back home drinking tea and not stuck in a perpetual war against all manner of terrible creatures."

Smokes handed the cigarette to Braids, who graciously took it and gave it a draught. While she did so, Smokes nodded.

"I suppose so," he murmured, "in the grand scheme of things, I suppose we're relatively minuscule in the big picture-" he paused to wave politely at a passerby, who spat obscenities at him and demanded that he go back home, "-when you think about it...I mean, think about it? All that happens when we die is a letter gets sent home to what little loved ones we have left, they bury a body if they're lucky, and then life goes on."

Braids shrugged herself and handed the cigarette back.
"Maybe...then again, think of all that we could be and we could do if we kept on living." She replied. "And who knows, maybe with us being here we may be the start of something new...something...better...I suppose it's just food for thought, something you don't think of often."

Smokes nodded.
"Yeah," He murmured, "I suppose you don't really think about that much."

I can't tell if the destruction is from our war, or theirs. This place was depressing even before we started dropping napalm and bombs everywhere, or so I'm told. Here in the cities at least we have been able to keep some form of stability, although it's fragile. As I hear from pilots those in the frontiers aren't so lucky. Non-humans, turns here though the population is actually very supportive of speciecide. They even already have a slogan for it apparently, 'keeping humans on the top of the food chain.' Ours is a little bit more on the nose though, 'ensuring the dominance of homo-sapiens' but luckily this shared belief has automatically gained most of the population on our side. It must feel weird to them, our 'shared law' must just seem like nothing compared to what they might call civilian law. Here in their homeland things are going somewhat smoothly, although I've heard worse on their extra-planetary colonies.
