Ultimately, the migrant crisis is a reflection of the contradiction between the liberal principle that all human beings are free and equal in dignity and rights and the unfortunate reality that the amount of freedom, dignity, and rights that people have are in fact very dependent on which country they're living in.

Until that fundamental problem is resolved, neither the pro-immigration solution nor the anti-immigration solution to the frequent border crises in North America and Europe can be truly successful in the long run.

We simply can’t take in everyone. There isn’t the space to house them in many places. If you want to come here you should follow the rules like everyone else. Should the process be streamlined? Yes but no one should get to jump in line.

There's no fucking crisis, not for America. If every person currently crossing the border or trying to cross it was let in and they settled evenly in every American county relative to per capita population, you wouldn't even notice.

America, though to a much lesser extent than countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Russia, is having the same phenomenon of a declining birth rate coupled with an increasingly large population of senior citizens. It's getting top heavy and an influx of young workers would be to America's benefit.

What crisis there is is one of human rights. There's a crisis of ICE, a human trafficking organization packed to the brim with rapists. There's a crisis of concentration camps. There's a crisis of right-wing propaganda.

Also, how about adding "abolish borders" to that poll? The whole notion of being born within a tiny sliver of Earth enclosed by imaginary lines and the rest of the planet being off limits to you without the permission of warlords (meaning the state) is ridiculous.

If you think America doesn't have the space to house people you have to be joking. The reason we don't even give space to our own legal citizens is due to capitalism and the way the government refuses to allow those who are poorer off to have affordable housing. We are THE richest country on Earth, if European powers can find a way to give affordable housing then so can we.

Ice isn’t doing any of this and if they are you’re exaggerating particularly about the part involving rapists and racists.

No one said anything is off limits but a country is sovereign and you don’t get to just enter their territory because you feel like it. Should we abolish passports too and vetting of refugees?

With our declining tax base, we can't really afford to be keeping a lot of people out. We might be one of the few countries not to suffer the same demographic time bomb as the rest of the West.
Occupied territories formed from the former US states of the New England region, once ruled by incels, but now liberated from that fascist, misogynistic regime.

The Abrahamic God is the most evil character ever created in fiction. It's a fact. Just deal with it.

Because of our aging population, we have a declining number of working taxpayers who can continue to pay FICA taxes among other taxes to pay the costs of government, including entitlements. A lot of people don't realize that current Social Security payments are derived from current FICA revenue.

Pretty much all of the planet's population growth is in Africa. Europe being emptier won't help them. Meanwhile, the Japanese govenrment is panicking because 1/4th of their population is elderly.

So the population declines big deal. Less housing needed and pollution goes down.

If you're jumping on this train then it's not just a few less people, it's a LOT less people. Our resource overshoot date is July 29th, to achieve true sustainability you'd probably have to cut the global population by more than 50% and entirely dismantle capitalism and profit motives.

A declining population ensures the aged of a nation lack a safety net funded sufficiently by the young working age people to survive without returning to a workforce. Generally as incompetent workers. This is a genuine economic problem.

Which is not to say that the solution is to have more babies, of course. But it is to say that the issue cannot be handwaved away.

I am hugely amused by the idea of invading Mexico to fight the cartels. We could cut them off at the knees by legalizing drug use through state apparatus, giving people the chance to choose for themselves. Instead we should disregard Mexican sovereignty and put their people at risk so we can continue denying our own people the choice of what to consume. It's just a bonkers dichotomy.

I think that things like vetting and citizenship tests and integration help centers would be worth it if we could turn most illegal immigration into legal immigration.

Are millions of migrant rapists and criminals running amok in the US now?

“No pueden entrar [you can’t come in],” a Texas national guard soldier shouted across as he adjusted a coil of the concertina razor wire marking the line between the waiting people and America. At first his action prompted some to believe they would be let in, but then they all listened and sat back down.

When the clock struck 10pm local time, midnight on the US east coast, the exact moment Title 42 expired, the atmosphere at the gate in the tall border barrier remained tensely silent.

Only sporadically, when small vans arrived at the gate from the US side to pick up migrants who had been allowed through and take them elsewhere for processing, would migrants clap and cheer for a few seconds.

But as the night progressed, the cold did too. Temperatures dropped enough for those waiting at the gate to want a second layer of clothing. The most readily available were the sweaters, jackets and blankets in the two dumpsters where migrants had discarded all of their belongings earlier in the evening.

Some grabbed the items but shook them repeatedly to get rid of the thick layer of dust and debris covering them before putting them on.

“They’re not letting us in, I don’t know why,” said Oscar Adrián Izaguirre Brito, 20, a mechanic from Caracas, Venezuela.

I wish I knew how to fix this problem, but it's infuriating seeing that the prevailing options in Washington are either "send them all back" or "how dare you say we don't have the resources to let everyone in." It's not a one-or-the-other proposition.

Ideally, Congress could compromise and work out some sort of administrative scheme where those at the border who want to work and who want to become citizens can remain in the US and work for several years before becoming naturalized. I suspect that many would take that option, and it's not a novel idea historically. But sending everyone back or moving migrants around the country on busses, shuttling them from hotel to hotel - it all accomplishes nothing.

Ignoring the obvious flaws with this theory, even if this were true, how exactly does overpopulation have anything to do with this crisis? The world's population in its entirety is what people purport to be causing all these long-term issues; not the population within a specific country.

That FOX-generated migrant crisis continues to escalate..

Crossings at the US border with Mexico have dropped 50% after Title 42 restrictions ended at the end of Thursday and the Biden White House implemented an arguably tougher immigration policy, American homeland security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden on Sunday told White House pool reporters that the border situation immediately after Title 42’s elimination was “much better than you all expected”. The president said he did not plan to visit the border “in the near term” because to do so at this stage “would just be disruptive”.

Ignoring the obvious flaws with this theory, even if this were true, how exactly does overpopulation have anything to do with this crisis? The world's population in its entirety is what people purport to be causing all these long-term issues; not the population within a specific country.
