Should Pornography be banned in the US?

Postby Cook-Out » Sun May 07, 2023 10:57 pm

I know that all the free speech advocates are gonna jump on me for this one but here goes.
Porn has no benefits besides temporary pleasure. Meanwhile, porn has many downsides such as the objectification of women (and men), sex addiction, and depression, as well as unrealistic body expectations and bad relationships. Porn also is linked to human trafficking and child sex abuse. Therefore, I believe that all porn access in the US should be banned, both digital and physical, judging based on the Miller Test. Feel free to discuss your opinion in the replies on how this would be implemented or if it shouldn't be implemented and why.

All such efforts are seemingly doomed to fail harder than Prohibition. Porn is illegal in China for example, but people who're determined enough just go overseas to get their fix or draw/produce porn for their black market. Besides, the porn industry in the US broadly speaking, pays tons of money in taxes and other regulatory compliance schemes and not being able to work with the likes of Visa or MasterCard at their regular interest rates (because its a higher risk industry), is just the cost of doing business for them.

A stupid idea which wouldn’t work. Hell, even back in the 1920’s when the information technology was nowhere near the level (and the amount of ones ability to avoid the law) at which it is today. There is simply no feasible way for someone to outright ban the possession of pornography- it wouldn’t work. While I agree with you that it has a lot of negative consequences, as with alcohol prohibition is not an option because it wouldn’t work. Perhaps if you’d look into alternatives- fund community alternatives for people with porn addiction, fund rehab programs and do Medicare for all and stuff it would solve the problem.

I see your reasoning, but I'm still on the side of limiting it's reach, so it's less likely that teenagers will get into it soon than banning it.

Yes, ban all porn. Lock up anyone who produces it and liberate the people who are raped for money for it.

True freedom can only be where there is no exploitation and oppression of one person by another; where there is not unemployment, and where a person is not living in fear of losing his job, his home and his bread. "No benefits besides temporary pleasure" - what a phrase. All pleasures are temporary pleasures, all lives are temporary lives. What the hell else is there? If I stop enjoying porn, will I have time to ascend to apotheosis and become an eternal being that outlives the heat death of the universe?

While I think that pornography addiction is a far more serious issue than most people are willing to acknowledge, and more needs to be done to combat sex trafficking,I'm against banning it wholesale. Especially since it's been shown time and time again that such measure will always fail.

A request for all who support such a ban: Define "pornography."

Pornography has been around since we figured out who to draw and carve stone.

Outlawing it will do nothing to stop it.

Ah yes, "liberation" like when girls from third world countries who are brought to America as victims of sex trafficking end up in an ICE prison, maybe get raped by the guards, and end up back where they came from so the whole cycle can start again. Even the Scandinavian countries with their often praised Nordic models of prostitution end up victimizing the victims in this manner.

There are plenty of scumbags in the porn industry who exploit vulnerable sex workers, but the state doesn't do jack shit to actually help those sex workers. The state doesn't give a fuck about human rights, only "law and order."

Porn sucks and there's a growing body of evidence that it very much is a social ill but outlawing it would do nothing to get rid of it and would just make exploitation and trafficking even worse.

It would make more sense to make sure children were given access to comprehensive sex education before access to internet porn.

Such 1984ism, porn gets us oligarchs rich!!

Apart the jokes, a ban would be quite the shittiest solution. Just offer therapy for those with porn addiction and tada.

Considering that porn consumption might be able to deter sexual violence, and at the very least, there's scant evidence that porn increases sexual violence, I'm gonna go with no. Should the porn industry be better regulated to curb abuses? Hell, yes (look up the GirlsDoPorn legal battle for an example of such things happening and such abuses being curbed), but that doesn't mean all porn should be banned.

No, for 2 reasons:
1. its someones own decision to watch it. Why would you care about someones interrests
2. If you criminalise it, it will go off the legal grid along with all rules and guidelines it has now. No making porn under 18? gone. No porn without consent? Gone. Contracts about being paid? Gone
What we need is more regulation to prevent abuse. Banning it will make it far worse

The NSA uses all kinds of crazy (yet practical) encryption algorithms to protect the US Government's top secret files.
Some of which were likely created initially for making porn consumption much safer.
So a good bit of the developments in modern cryptography can be traced back to the need to watch naked babes.

No. I mean there’s good evidence that there are all sort of societal evils attached to it, but any attempt to ban it would just end up causing more problems than it already creates. A bit like drug prohibition.

The government has too much say in people’s lives to begin with in any case.

No there is no reason to ban it.

The main reasons are no one is making you watch it and as long as its consensual and no minors are involved why do you care?

Because an individuals actions have impact on society at large and "why do you care" attitudes have really done nothing except help destroy said society. Don't get me wrong banning porn would do more harm than good at this point, but I think it's about time people started to accept that extreme individualism has objectively failed.
