Sudan Just Imploded

Postby Insaanistan » Sat Apr 15, 2023 9:14 am

Sudan’s Armed Forces and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces. The two groups have had months of tensions that hav even rapidly escalating, with the army’s declaration that the RSF’s actions are “illegal” seeming to be the final straw. Both groups accuse the other of having started the fighting.

Violence erupted last night in the country, with residents of Khartoum waking up to gunfire. Videos show both sides firing at enemy fighters, jets soaring through the skies, armored vehicles throughout the streets, and civilians taking cover. According the RSF, they have control over the presidential palace, the state TV station, the army chief’s residence and Khartoum’s main airport, Khartoum International. The RSF also claims to have taken Egyptian soldiers in Northern Sudan captive, with a video purporting to show it. The fighting has left at least 3 civilians dead and dozens wounded, led to condemnation from the UN, and left US embassy staff huddling inside the building.

The Northeast African nation has been in a precarious situation ever since a popular uprising in 2019 ousted Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir. Civilian rule was quickly ended when the Sudanese military and RSF took power in a 2021 coup. They promised to return the country to civilian rule (which since has not happened) but protests erupted almost immediately, with the RSF being accused of killing hundreds and abusing many more during the demonstrations.

Sudan also faces the problem of ethnic tensions. Many non-Arabs feel as if Afro-Arabs are treated better than other groups, and groups such as the Hausa, Fulani & Bargo (often collectively referred to as “Hausawa” or “Fallata”) are often discriminated against, as they’re descendants of West Africans who came to Sudan to help fight the British, as well as Makkah-bound pilgrims who settled in Sudan on their way to or from the Hijaz. Recently, Hausas were attacked by members of the Berti ethnic group who believed the Hausa were gaining too much autonomy, sparking protests and riots from Hausas across Sudan.

So what do you think? Is Sudan beyond repair? Can this crisis be solved? Who should have the power, the armed forces, RSF or people? At this point, what can even be done?

It was expected, 2 coups in less than five years. Sudan has been fucked for a long time, especially ever since South Sudan left which that country has turned into a shitshow of its own, just hope that the civilian casualties are limited, but with how civil wars go is to be not expected.

Minutes ago, Al-Arabiya reports that TSC junta Chairman Burhan had toured frontline areas in Khartoum.

There's no such thing as "beyond repair" when it comes to systems but the path to peace is bloody and the simple fact of the matter is the people who could conceivably help can't be sufficiently motivated.

I went on Wikipedia and just found out that the entire Sudanese military consists of around 110 thousand active personnel. The RSF has around 100 thousand personnel, which is ridiculously huge for a paramilitary force. I expected them to be much smaller in numbers.

This proves that totalitarian dictators are usually the only way to preserve peace and order in third world nations.

Burhan is a corrupt politician, and Hemeti is just an openly kleptomaniacal warlord, so I can't say I have much sympathy for either of them. Ultimately, whoever brings stability and peace to Sudan is the person to side with, even if they do wipe their ass with the Geneva Conventions.

The RSF & army are unlikely to have the country actually split into to. More likely is the factions claim areas while all vying to be the government of all of Sudan

Yes, because Turkish Nationalists are also the product of a classical Middle Eastern mentality. All I can say for the Sudanese people is I hope no one gets upset, I hope they can reach the European Standards embellished with secularism. Don't fight, just make love.

I mean, Africa is a large continent. It's quite wrong for us to generalize all of it. Egypt is further away from South Africa than Japan is from Qatar.

RSF is reportedly claiming control of Sudanese airspace. Unless air force personnel have sided with them, I don't see how this is feasible.

The RSF also claims "we have located the head of the junta, and work is underway to arrest him", and this is minutes after clashes were reported in the vicinity of the Army General Command.

This is claimed via a telegram channel, without a provided source. Even still, it's probably about as reliable as information from the Sudanese Army and RSF.

The RSF was created by the ousted Omar Bashir to help the government combat dissidents and ethnic violence in the eastern/Darfur region. But since their creator was ousted , it has grown due to it ethnic affiliations , as well as , according to Al Jazeera , partial funding from the EU , control of gold mines been, low-key Russian support and even having fighters in Yemen under the Saudi-led coalition. Its leader , Mohamad Hamdan Daglo since the 2021 coup is now one of the most powerful in Sudan as the deputy of Burhan.

Frankly outside forces , especially Russia has the leverage to end this.
