THE DEPLOYMENT

Postby Kiberia » Fri Mar 31, 2023 3:39 pm

The seas were cold as ice as the three Kiberian Carrier Strike Groups sailed in formation. Each CSG was numbered and commanded by a Boreal Class light aircraft carrier. Carrier groups 1 and 3 also had an Oceano class amphibious assault ship while CSG 2 had two extra Leviatán class nuclear attack submarines for a total of 4. The surface escorts were identical across the three groups. Each had 4 Constitución class general purpose firgates, and each had 1 Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer. CSG's 1 and 3 had two Leviatán class submarines with them as well.

CSG 1 would take point while CSG 2 and CSG 3 took the rear port and starboard flank respectively. with roughly 1.5 km seepration between each CSG. The surface vessles within the CSG's would form a perimeter around their own carriers and assault ships. For each CSG a submarine would lead the group submurged at around 200ft in depth, while another would take up the rear of their group at a depth of 300ft. The fleet would move together at a speed of roughly 15 knots. Each carrier would have roughly 5 fighter aircraft with their pilots already aboard waiting for take-off in case early contact was established.

The two extra submarines from CSG 2 would be ahead of all of this on the left and right flanks of the fleet. Both would be sailing at 17 knots and both at a depth of 320ft listening in on passive sonar systems to detect any potential enemy movement.

Current location of the fleet would be roughly 390km away from the westernmost point on the Owellian coast at roughly 55 degrees west longitude, and 45 degrees north latitude.

The fleet would be already at battle stations, ready to fight the enemy in the chilly waters of the southern Altus Ocean.

Fleet composition:

CSG-1:

x 4 Constitución class general purpose firgate
x 1 Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer
x 2 Leviatán class nuclear attack submarines
x 1 Boreal Class light aircraft carrier
x 1 Oceano class amphibious assault ship

CSG-2:

x 4 Constitución class general purpose firgate
x 1 Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer
x 4 Leviatán class nuclear attack submarines
x 1 Boreal Class light aircraft carrier

CSG-3:

x 4 Constitución class general purpose firgate
x 1 Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer
x 2 Leviatán class nuclear attack submarines
x 1 Boreal Class light aircraft carrier
x 1 Oceano class amphibious assault ship

Position:

~ 55 degrees west longitude, and 45 degrees north latitude

After word of Kiberia's sudden declaration of war, the military was immediately put on high alert, particularly the western naval port Fort Khan. The navy was quickly assembled to the western coast of Orwelsia, and set off as soon as the sun pierced the clouds the very morning after the Kiberian fleet was reported to be on the move. The defensive group aimed to destabilize the three Kiberian strike groups in formation to attempt to stop them from reaching the Orwellian coast.

The crown jewel of the Orwellian fleet, the 55,000 ton Type 001 Aircraft Carrier ONS Alexandra, was present in the defensive force, loaded with 25 OFJ-17 Multirole Fighter Jets and 12 OAH-10 Attack Helicopters. In a diamond formation around the carrier was 9 Type 052 Guided Missile Destroyers, 12 Type 054 Guided Missile Frigates, and
16 attack submarines (4 Type 094, 6 Type 093, and 6 Type 091). The rest of the majority of the fleet was collected and stationed at the westernmost port in case the first defense proved unsuccessful. Whether or not the mounted defense will succeed is purely up to fate and the sharpness of the admirals commanding the fleet.

The battle of Altus will soon begin.

Whether or not the mounted defense will succeed is purely up to fate and the sharpness of the admirals commanding the fleet.

The battle of Altus will soon begin.

THE BEGINNING

As the fleet moved closer, to about 300km, they would -in formation- slow to a speed of 15 knots. The two submarines leading the fleet would break off and begin to push forward at 15 knots, maintaining a steady course at around a depth of 320 ft, only listening in on passive sonar. Along with this a Constitución class general purpose frigate would follow the two submarines, staying about 20 km to the west of them, supported by a Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer. Both surface vessels would be from CSG-2.

They would both travel around 15 knots as to keep formation with the suibmarines. At the first sign of trouble they would flip from passive sonar to active and contact the fleet which would begin combat movements.

The two submarines would split off, one (KN SSN-001) taking the north flank while the second (KN SSN-002) took the southern flank. This would create an encompassing area of passive sonar coverage while still overseaing the seas beyond the fleet.

Soft returns at this point would begin reaching the submarines. However due to the likely large distance between the Kiberian submarines and the enemy fleet, nothig would occur. At this moment, the submarines were lying in waiting.

CSG-1:

x 4 Constitución class general purpose firgate
x 1 Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer
x 2 Leviatán class nuclear attack submarines
x 1 Boreal Class light aircraft carrier
x 1 Oceano class amphibious assault ship

CSG-2:

x 4 Constitución class general purpose firgate (x 1 moved to front)
x 1 Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer (moved to front of fleet)
x 4 Leviatán class nuclear attack submarines (x 2 moved to front for monitoring)
x 1 Boreal Class light aircraft carrier

CSG-3:

x 4 Constitución class general purpose firgate
x 1 Almirante Castellanos class guided missile destroyer
x 2 Leviatán class nuclear attack submarines
x 1 Boreal Class light aircraft carrier
x 1 Oceano class amphibious assault ship

With the entire fleet travelling at a steady 16 knots, the defense group released the attack submarines, ordering them to spit up and spread out to reduce sonar noise and force the Kiberian fleet to spread out as well so that it would easier to pick them off. They sped up to cruising speed and quickly approached the attack groups, torpedoes at the ready. Meanwhile, the main defensive group readied their weapons.

Before long, first contact was made. Two Orwellian subs in close proximity to each other detected two Kiberian subs, and immediately broke apart and attempted to take the two subs from the side but soon found themselves fired at. Nearby subs were alerted at their presence as the fight commenced.

From the carrier:

"We have contact," Major Tyler Keston announced as he got readings from the submarines under attack.

"Alright. Get me their exact speed and location, and zero in on the course of the main strike groups." Admiral Stephen Hashton barked to the carrier's control room. "Once we get an exact course, release the fighter jets to patrol the air and set course for an intercept point."

"Sir, what about that tactic we discussed?" Vice Admiral Connor Jefferies asked.

"We'll go through with it, but we need constant and solid protection for this carrier at all time. We'll launch the assigned warships to surround them after a few dozen kilometers. Our fleet will be stretched thin, but its our only hope."

"We'll go through with it, but we need constant and solid protection for this carrier at all time. We'll launch the assigned warships to surround them after a few dozen kilometers. Our fleet will be stretched thin, but its our only hope."

"Dive, dive, dive!"

As the torpedoes left the tubes of the submarines they began to dive to depths of roughly 400ft and began making moves northwest to re-orient themselves with the main fleet. This would also get them out of the paths of weapons potentially launched back at them. KN SSN-001 would begin transmitting possible coordiantes of two Orwellian submarines via ultra low frequency communications back to the surfaced submarines in the fleet. These transmissions would be sent to the rest of the surface fleet. The Frigate and Destroyer would then launch their anti-submarine warfare (asw) helictopers. These helicopters would then begin using their dipping sonar which would bang away on active soanr to establish contact with the two submarines closest to the Kiberian force.

Once there was confirmation of enemy submarines the groups were ordered to keep formation and begin moving northeast at a steady 15 knots. This would keep the distance open between the two fleets.

"Sir, we've gained two confirmed contacts. We have Sierra one and Sierra two marked in general locations."

"Don't bring anymore SSN's into that fight. Those two hunters will do fine. Keep the rest of our subs with us. Launch two EWAC's and some supporting fighters. Let's get our eyes up."

"Shooters are a go. Launch 2 and 2"

Two EWAC aircraft, armed with powerful airborne early warning radar would then be prepped on the flight deck of the carrer in CSG-1. After they prepped the shooters authorized their launches. With the two EWAC aircraft taken off, two P-20 light fighters were also launched. With this air group launched it began making passes to the east. After about 20km out the group split in half. One EWAC aircraft with its escort went northeast, and another group went southeast. The EWAC aircraft would active their radar, giving them a 300 mile plus radar range to detect fighters and warships. Not logn after their launch, enemy signatures began to pop up. These contact solutions would then be transmitted back to the main fleet, which would input the coordinates into their firing controls as the sailors began prepping the missiles for battle.

The two subs in contact did all they could to attempt to evade the torpedoes released from the enemy submarines, but one was hit and the ocean was alive with destruction. Immediately after contact, the surviving sub began to dive, reaching an altitude of 350 ft below sea level. The sonar rooms were hot with focus as they attempted to keep the enemy subs in view. A few nearby subs were set to dive as well to that same altitude and converge with the one survivor, with just enough space between them to avoid overly excessive sonar noise but close enough to where a volley of torpedoes could be launched and be very difficult to avoid.

Meanwhile, the main warship fleet continued along a set course, with civilian GPS results detailing where the enemy’s fleets were located. Once the Orwellian fleet reached a certain point, a couple of warships will break off and attempt to somewhat flank the enemy fleet once they reached the converging point. From the carrier, the attack helicopters were released, some fitted with anti-submarine measures and all tasked with hunting enemy helicopters and keep them from striking the submarine fleet. The fighter jets were prepped to launch as soon as full frontal contact with the enemy ensued.

As the KN SSN-001 and 002 pulled away from the hot zone, they would get a loud ping on their sonar, confirming an enemy submarine had been struck and eliminated. With more subs joining the fight, both submarines would fire a total of four rear tube torpedoes in the general area of the position they believed the enemy submarines were. They immediately snipped the wires and allowed the torpedoes to switch to active homing. After the torpedoes were launched, they would dive to a depth of 500ft and rigged their vessels to silent running. This meant torpedoes were comign after the enemy sub group from two different sides.

Around this time, the EWAC aircraft would be able to pick up on firmer contact solutions. The breaking off of two enemy surface vessels would immediately be reported back to the destroyer and frigate that accompanied the submarines and were off to the west by a few KM. with these two warships seperated from the fleet, they made perfect targets. Both ships wasted no time opening fire.

In an instant, two tomahawk cruise missiles would be fired from VLS cells from both vessels for a total of 4. These missile would then scream towards the two vessles, using GPS and other internal guidance systems to home in on the warships.

With enemy helicopters spotted on early warning radar, and the main fleet only 150 km west from the Kiberian subs, the fleet was well in range to begin aircraft oeprations. At this point the three light carriers would begin to launch their fighter squadrons. In a mere few minutes 20 aircraft were in the air, broken into five aircraft squadrons. These squadrons would be sent out towards the enemy fleet to close the gap to 100km in order to get good radar contacts and to fire their anti-ship and anti-surface missiles. If any enemy helicopters were in the way, they would become the primary target, overriding the surface targets to keep Kiberian submarines unmolested from the air.

Meanwhile, the two vessels that broke off quickly changed their course in an attempt to throw off the observing enemy, and all hands were on deck when the missiles came screeching towards them. The larger destroyer managed to shoot down the tomahawk missile, but its partner struck the frigate, knocking it out of commission. Fires erupted as the blast caused several officers and accompanying debris to go flying off the ship. The frigate started to take on water and before long sunk to the depths of the ocean. The destroyer continued on its course, speeding up to 20 knots, finally locating the source of the two missiles and fired off four of its own anti-ship missiles, two aimed at one of the carriers and one each homed on to two of the carrier's accompanying destroyers.

"The diversion was successful, Admiral, but the frigate was struck and sunk." Major Tyler Keston remarked in the control room of the carrier. "The destroyer is continuing on its course and fired off four missiles to attempt to cause some damage."

Admiral Stephen Hashton frowned in concentration. "Give orders to speed up further. I want them to stay above the water as long as possible so that we can cause as much damage as possible before they attack our main fleet"

"What of our subs?"

"I want them to keep on course to converge. It will cause much noise, yes, but we'll have a chance to cause major casualties later in the battle."

With the enemy submarine attempting to avoid the torpedo, SSN-001 was able to keep constant contact with the vessel while remaining silent. After a few minutes of generally decent contact return, two more torpedoes were fired again in the general direction while SSN-001 rose to a depth of 450ft. These torpedoes were wired to travel to the enemy's last known location and become active. If the torpedoes didn't detect anythign they would begin to dive down in an attempt to pick up target solutions. KN SSN-002 towards the south would continue to pick up ultra low frequency transmissions from SSN-001 which reported the enemy submarine forces to the main fleet. Around this time ASW helicopters from the Frigate and Destroyer accompanying the SSN-001 would begin to fire their own torpedoes into the sea where the converging group of submarines were thought to be.

With four missiles coming towards the fleet, all hands were prepped to defend. The four missiles would come screaming towards the Kiberian fleet. The first two would be wiped out by Kiberian Anti-air missiles. Another one would be fooled by defensive chaff systems and CWIS radar guided machine guns. The last one would scream into the water right in front of a Destroyer's bow hull, causing damage to the structure and wounded a couple sailors in the process.

With the main fleet under fire, the fleet began its first full-on assault. Each of the frigate escorts would fire four tomahawk cruise missiles at the Orwellian fleet for a total of 48 missiles. The three destroyers would each fire five ERAM missiles from their cells. Generally anti-air missiles, ERAM's had the secondary function of anti-ship missiles, a job they were now deployed for. This equated to an additional 20 missiles. Furthermore, the twenty fighters launched previously opened up their payloads as well. Each of the aircraft would fire two of their four harpoon missiles for a total of 40 harpoon missiles from different directions. These missiles would be pinpointed towards the enemy carrier in an effort to achieve total air superiortiy over the seas.

The fleet began to slow in order to keep the distance open but kept a tight formation to maximize defensive firepower. The escort submarines kept to their positions to cover the fleet with submarine protection.

The control room was live with stress and fear as they dove into the cold, tense depths of the Altus Ocean.

"Sir, we've got forty-eight targets on their way to our fleet!" Major Tyler Keston exclaimed, staring in awe at his control panel. Fleet Admiral Stephen Hashton looked over the Major's shoulder and frowned in concentration.

"First, launch the fighter jets. We must maintain air superiority for as long as possible. Let's try to destroy as many of the incoming targets as possible. I want five missiles from each destroyer and one from each of our remaining frigates launched at their fleet as soon as possible." He responded.

A total of 56 missiles were launched almost immediately after the order was given in retaliation. However, not much later, the missiles launched by the Kiberian fleet struck. Four struck the water near the carrier's hull, five more near its bow, and two struck it head on. The damage was great, but not enough to knock it out of commission. The rest of the missiles either hit the water or the carrier’s escorts, sinking two frigates and damaging one frigate and two destroyers.

When the submarines reached their convergence point, two were struck by the enemy torpedoes. However, they kept on moving at a 20 knots and a depth of 600 feet below sea level in a diamond formation. Once they detected enemy subs, they would fire a volley of three torpedoes from each sub in the direction of the enemy.

Once they detected enemy subs, they would fire a volley of three torpedoes from each sub in the direction of the enemy.

As the Kiberian missiles slammed against the enemy fleet, their IFF radars, IR's and other sensors began to scream out.

"We've got dozens of missiles inbound! Launch countermeasures"

Suddenly Kiberian naval jammers were working overtime to dampen the targeting solutions of the enemy missiles. This caused several to fly way off course and splash into the water. Other missiles got through and were hit with either SAM's, CWIS, or thrown off by other measures like chaff launchers. Howsever roughly 10 were able to get through. A destroyer in CSG 1 was struck in the lower midsection, causing several crew members to lose their lives. The destroyer also lost its starboard torpedo launcher, its loss causing a fire which was rapidly brought under control. several missiles hit near or struck one of CSG-1's frigates. The ship roared out in flames and explosions as it rapidly sunk, killing almost all of their crew members.

With one ship seriously damaged yet still operational and another frigate ripped apart, the fleet's jamming array was to be kept online permanently. The fleet was then ordered to bank southeast to keep the distance open from the enemy.

With the attack taken, the Kiberian Navy prepped to fire once more. The now 11 frigates were ordered to fire a mass retaliation. 12 RIM-174 ERAM's were launched from each frigate for a total of 120 anti-surface missiles. They would be launched in individual salvos, ship by ship. This meant 11 would fire from one ship, then after a minute the next ship would fire, and so on. This was to allow for deep penetration and so any applied enemy countermeasures would not distrubt all the missiles, allowing for the Kiberian missiles to work over the enemy defenses.

Another 14 tomahawk missiles would be fired from the three destoryers towards the enemy carrier. During this time Kiberian aircraft would begin to pickup enemy signatures. At this time the recon aircraft would begin pinpointing enemy contact solutions while Kiberian figther aircraft would be able to fire at enemy aircraft without even getting a visual lock-on.

Several minutes later passive sonar arrays onboard the surface vessels, as well as sonar on the escoring submarines began picking up torpedo contacts. Submarines closest to the torpedoes began dumping noisemakers to shake off enemy torpedoes. MOSS' were also deployed while surface vessels began to break away from the main fleet and accelerating, all while deploying their soft kill countermeasures. All in all, only two torpedoes made their way through the countermeasures and struck two frigates. The two frigates were damaged and fires blazed, however while one was being saved, another began to sink.

The escorting submarines took care in not firing back as to not muffle their own sensors. However SSN-001 and 002 were now near the rear of the enemy group, and with good contact solutions, both fired 4 torpedoes (8 in total) towards the enemy sub group. ASW helicopters would throw about another 10 torpedoes into the water. All 18 would be programmed to dive if it did not pick up contact solutions with in the first couple minutes, in an effort to push the enemy submarines deeper and deeper.

Kiberian surface vessels also fired their torpedoes from their deck launchers. Roughly 8 ships launched three torpedoes (24) each towards the bearings that the enemy torpedoes were fired.
