What is your issue with anime based entertainment?

Postby Indecent Anime Empire » Wed Mar 29, 2023 7:06 am

All people are set into two groups, you have seen anime and you have qualms about it or you haven't watched a single frame of anime and have strong opinion about it.

This can be an argument about why it is the worst form of entertainment on earth or why it should to be produced in more variety.

The thread includes main animation such as Japanese anime, recently upcoming Chinese anime, or the lesser known Korean based anime.

I would like to stay away from American based cartoons but exceptions can be made for animations based around fluid concepts. A prime example of an exception would be "Avatar: The Last Air Bender".

Manga is relatable but keep it within the range of the topic.

First question, did you grow into anime or grow up with anime? (base age to grow up with is 15 at most, after that you grew into it)

shrek 2 is unironically one of the greatest animated pieces of all time. it's genuinely a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

anyways, yeah, i like anime (can you tell?). i kinda grew up with it, started with AOT when the first series came out (i was around 11 or so? i don't remember my exact age) but then i watched sword art online and dropped it for 7 years because that show is fucking awful

i have myanimelist in my factbook somewhere but i'm too lazy to link it

I used to watch a lot of (Japanese) anime shows and movies in the past. It's an interesting and unique art form that differs from western animation. It can get a little too outlandish for some people, but that's not necessarily bad.

I did watch some anime shows when I was a kid, most notably Dragon-ball Z. I was impressed by the quality compared to other kids shows that would air on TV. That got me interested to get into the medium, which I did as a teenager. I would say I grew into it as I started watching more consistently after the age of 15.

I may occasionally watch a new show, and I did watch GITS 2045 (Season 2) and the new JoJo part, but I'm not really into anime anymore.

Was also very impressed by the consistent quality some Japanese mangas have.

I honestly got into anime because of SAO, first season was a masterpiece till episode 14. After season two it had half of its original spice so it wasn't totally awful.
I also bookmark all my anime I watch in case myanimelist happens to go down for some reason.

I prefered old school JoJo to new school, Dragon ball was awesome to watch on nickelodeon and I started watching on adult swim Toonami which is when I first saw sword art online and had to look into it when it was first being produced. I was hooked.

I have not really watched anime and have no strong opinions about it. Unless you count Voltron, of course. Princess Allura was pretty, but when I watched it, I was way too young to think much else other than how cool Voltron was and how evil a certain King was.

Post not necessarily relating to anime, but I have no issue on animated forms of entertainment, it is just the writing in certain animated films are lacking. Also voice actors get less roles because Big Hollywood want more butts in seats in cinemas.

I actually never sat and watched a full episode of Voltron if that makes sense. It came on when my brother watched but i always seemed to be in or on my way to do something else.

I can agree, most media and film now are just digging for the next gold mine. Aka the next transformers despite it being really good.

It has its moments where it's definitely corny, but so does every movie/show ever made. Some people just have different tastes, would you watch it if it was more mature and was serious or laid back and full of slap stick comedy?

I do watch anime. Not because most of it is good, but because it is cheesy. There are a select few anime which are my favourites, I do watch a bunch mainly to pass the time. I prefer dub over sub, screw the haterz.

I also didn't watch my first anime until I started university, with the exception of a few episodes of pokemon, I watched as a kid.

Also, this thread should have its name changed to: "What is your issue with animebased entertainment?" since you excluded western animation in your OP. Might clear up some confusion.

I never watched anime much as a kid, because the stylistic choices (I don't know the terminology, but characters transforming when they get annoyed or sad, all of the gasping, etc.) and long story arcs turned me off. I preferred self-contained, familiar American cartoons.

I had a few friends in college who loved anime, and one friend insisted I watch a few with him. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Evangelion, Made in Abyss. Really enjoy Ghost Stories (dubbed of course), though we haven't made it through. It's not a genre I'd watch on my own, but I certainly respect it a lot more.

If we're talking about eastern anime, then yes I like anime, I wouldn't say I'm addicted, but I really like Vinland Saga, definitely one of my absolute favorites shows I've ever watched in general.

I absolutely hate the coom bait animes though, and the fanservice just makes me uncomfortable, not very hilarious to me.

I grew into anime in the sense that it was relatively recently that I sought it for the sake of it being anime.

Wouldn't say anime the best or the worst, but I felt it was conducive to the sort of stories that I consider among the best and most exceptional.

I have no issues with anime.

Well; maybe the efforts to go live action. Still; live action regular animation tends to suck as well.

Dubbing just doesn't allow me to suspend disbelief very well. It doesn't always seem to time correctly with the motions of the lips, thus jarring with me with it being obvious that the person isn't saying exactly those words. I noticed it especially while watching Babylon Berlin, an otherwise great show that nonetheless annoyed me with the dubbing.

I have watched anime once. The reason I hate it is mainly because of these 4 things:
1) The animation style
2) Bad english translations
3)The community
4) It is sometimes overly sexualized (sorta like Indecent Anime Empire's flag...)
All these factors make me view anime in a bit of spite, but it's fine if you like it, it's just not for me.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely fricking ADORE animation, but anime is just not for me.

Same, dubbing bothers me no matter what medium it's in. It always feels... off. When I know it's dubbed, it ruins that suspension of disbelief. ADR voice-overs happen all the time on TV shows, but it's not noticeable 90% of the time. Since the dialogue in the show doesn't match how they've moving their lips with language dubbing, it immediately reminds me that it was recorded over in a sound booth.

I prefer dub for two main reasons. 1) I don't need to concentrate fully on the anime. 2) I get to watch it a bit more without needing to read (not to say I don't love reading). It's an animation, so I personally don't need to suspend by disbelief that much. Animation by its nature is a sort of caricature of live action. Not even mentioning the fantasy and other non-realistic things present in animation and many other visual media stories.

Though, i do find it fun when the jaws of anime characters don't move even when the mouth opens and closes for speaking

Not having much experience with anime, I'll have to take your word for it. My only real experience with dubbing is in live action.

In response to the many messages I missed I prefer sub because I have ADHD brain so I pick up on many Japanese cues and overly reused phrases which let me decipher a larger portion of the language without having formally learned Japanese.

I also need subtitles because ADHD brain would short circuit if I was looking at moving pictures without words to read to split my focus.

I am cursed you see, if this were to come out in real life I would be branded a traitor to the cause..... Anime is.....irresistible. Past the point of cravings I have journeyed beyond to find a land of 2D entertainment that is unlike the three dimensional plane we exist on.

New Temecula wrote:4) It is sometimes overly sexualized (sorta like Indecent Anime Empire's flag...)

A bit of focus I would like to point out is that very much like reality tv shows and most movies, There are over sexualized tendencies. Much like in anime, people make gifs of the Kardashians so much to the point that it autocorrects that word for you without much effort. Its a common theme in all entertainment even in cartoons which is kind of sad but true.

My nation is very much a satire and is to just show despite this there are validating qualities of values in anime.
