Confusingly, the Danish island which Copenhagen is on is also called Zealand, but it's not the one that makes New Zealand new, in stead that's a Dutch river esturary.

For what it's worth, when I was in Wellington back in 2005(ish), a giant Gollum was looming above the airport, and about to snatch the One Ring - so I think they've been on the quest for a while now.

Need to try and track that photograph down once I'm home again; it's not on my work computer.

Imagine being some poor Afghan or African migrant who's managed to acquire refuge and citizenship in New Zealand, and after a long flight where you reflect on the memories of your homeland and wonder how your future in a more developed country will be, you step off and, having absolutely no clue what Lord of the Rings even is, you see giant Gollum looming over you and the ring.

Stuffing two country names together is an awkward middle ground. Unexpectedly, I partially agree with Floofy. “New” should be removed from the name and replaced with “Aotearoan” to keep it short and simple. It’s a place named after Zeeland on the islands of Aotearoa and whatever the other one is called, so call it like it is. Otherwise, it’s probably going to be a Bosnia and Herzegovina situation where the BiH just becomes Bosnia.

"aotearoa" just sounds cooler than "new zealand". i'm also a bit of a sucker for joint country names so i also really like "aotearoa-new zealand" or "aotearoa-zealand". maybe "aotearoa-wakaamāu" to give the south island some love.
