World of Darkness: Brass and Smoke OOC [OPEN]

Fog-shrouded streets conceal a myriad of crimes – but not all of them are a Kindred's doing. In the greatest city of the empire, untold horrors breed in cobbled alleyways and scheme on the estates of the Kindred gentry. For every exaltation Prince Mithras receives, a myriad of evils fester behind the scenes, and it's only a matter of time before they boil to the surface.

World of Darkness: Brass and Smoke

Welcome to another realm, one shrouded in fog and lit by flame. The history of the Gothic Victorian age is like that of our own world, but it is one in which monsters prowl the night. They could just as well survive in the shadows of our world - or at least the shadows of our past. Later generations of vampires herald this time as the height of their unseen civilization. Yet, the mists of time are like London’s fog: They distort all we think we perceive.

Brass and Smoke takes place during the Gothic Victorian era of the World of Darkness setting, a darker and more shadowy reflection of our own. Supernatural entities like vampires, werewolves, the fae and those blessed few of Man who wield the power to alter reality itself all lurk in the corners of this world. It is a time of change as Humanity harnesses technological advances and science challenges the beliefs and faith of old as it pushes the boundaries of Human knowledge….but occasionally things push back.

London By Gaslight

The Year of Our Lord 1888

As the warm days of summer fade into distant memory and a cold autumn heralds a long and dark winter, something evil stirs amongst the cobbled streets and decrepit rookeries of the East End. The brutal murders of a number of women of ‘low standing’ has sparked widespread panic across London as the press run rampant with rumours and speculation, a police station on Commercial Road is attacked by a mob that believed the murderer was being harboured there.

Even the supernatural community of London is shocked by the brutal nature of the killings, leading to recriminations to fly back and forth as even the kindred deny any thought of the heinous acts being committed by mortal hands. Suspicion and paranoia embed themselves as London hunkers down for the cold, dark nights of winter as its people fear what may lurk in London’s infamous fogs. There is a tension in the air as Londoners became afraid to walk the gaslit streets, despite the presence of extra police and so-called vigilance committees patrolling the lonely cobblestones at night.

WOD: Brass and Smoke App

General Information

Real Name: Gerard Smith

Shadow Name: Wayland

Birthdate and Age: June 12, 1854 / 34 years old

Species: Mage

Height: 6'6"

Weight: 244 lbs

Occupation: Mage Crafter (as Wayland)/Bookstore Owner (as Gerard)

Description or Image:
After the near death experience that is his Awakening, Gerard has sustained multiple scars and burn marks all over his body. His torso is marred by burns and the scars left by being buried under burning timber and rocks. His face is badly scarred. What was once would have been a handsome face is ruined by fire. His left cheek was barely saved due to the fact that his left cheek was pressed against the ground and away from the flame. His right cheek sustained most of the damage, showing teeth and exposed bone. He would have lost his eyes, if not for the fact that the grace of the Awakening saved his vision. His hair became a shock of white due to the extreme stress of death, and his vocal chords damaged due to both the pollutants in the air and his own screams of agony.

As Wayland, he is fully dressed to cover every single patch of skin. No part of his body is uncovered. When taking the mantle of Gerard when doing mortal business, his face is covered by swathes of fabrics and scarves. When taking the mantle of Wayland in the matters of Mage business, he wears a black beaked leather mask. His training under the Adamantine Arrows has left him extremely physically fit and strong, and he is usually armed to the teeth with his personal arsenal hidden by Veiling Spells.

Character Biography:
Life ends in death. That is how the world works. When something, or someone, dies, that's the end. The string is cut short, and that something or someone is gone. But that is not the Truth. The cruel Tyrant Gods above blinded humanity, to see and fear that there is nothing in the end. Life simply ends. The person that has left the world simply... is gone. With enough time, and with each and every human that remembers them follows them to the grave, they will not exist in any form. Not in life nor in memory will such a person exist. This is one of their many great Lies, and a man who was once named Gerard Smith has seen through and lived through.

Gerard Smith was an unremarkable man in his qualities. He had a good face and a good constitution, but among the masses he was destined to simply be a cog in the machine. His destiny was to work, to fill the needs of the burgeoning machine that is the industrialization of the time. His job was to provide for a family, for his parents and his siblings, and to venture into the big city. It was written in the stars that he would toil, and in his pursuit of economic salvation would he die.

But the Exarchs are not the only Gods in Heaven, and not all Gods are cruel nor hateful towards mankind.

On the fateful day that Gerard Smith was fated to die, deep in the bowels of a mining shaft and into the dark tunnels where coal and oil seep through the earth, an untimely impact of a pickaxe against metallic ore births a spark. In this compressed space an explosion follows. The tunnel begins to collapse, the timbers they used to uphold the rock walls break under the pressure, and the gasses that were trapped within the Earth's depths ignite into flames. Many of these men would die, here underneath the earth amidst fire and coal. In the chaos, Gerard tripped as the stampede of miners rushed for the exit that they will never reach. Solid rocks and burning timber fall from above, and Gerard was one of the many that would be buried alive in fire and soil.

There is nothing but all-encompassing pain, and the smell of tar, dust, coal, and fire. Everything feels blurry, as if submerged in water. Gerard could barely feel the weight of his prison now, for there is only the lull of death and the pain that never stops. In this dark burial that he finds himself in, he has already come to terms that he will die one way or another. Here he will die, truly. And if he crawls out, the man named Gerard will die. His prospects in the future will, and society has no pity for those who are rendered disabled by the hazards of their jobs. But if there is a chance at life, even at the cost of such death, he will take it.

He pulls himself, through his silent screams as his voice is lost in both his cries and the smoke, and in what seems to be hours... he finds light at the end of this dark and suffocating tunnel. Hands that are cold to the touch, yet comforting, reach out to hold his. They pull him from the burning wreckage, out of the tunnel, and into that blinding light.

"...What is your name sir?"

A voice, disembodied and muffled by the feeling of being underwater, asks him a question. Whatever's left of his ruined consciousness, battered and bloodied by pain, barely registers it as one of his saviors and rescuers. He feels bodiless, perhaps he is and everything of his self is obliterated by the collapse, and yet his hand feels a pen and a board.

"Gerard... Gerard Smith..."

He feels himself compelled to write... and through the blinding light of the afterlife he sees words burn in golden fire. The Watchtower of the Lead Coin welcomes a new Mage into existence, and his Mystery Play comes to a close. At that moment the mortal man, Gerard Smith, has ceased to live. From his corpse rose the newly Awakened Moros, he who will bear the name Wayland, in his stead.

In the gruelling years that follow his Awakening Wayland is inducted into the Adamantine Arrows, the Order of Warriors who struggle against life's ever present whetstone of trials and tribulations. Stygia has opened his eyes to see that life is to struggle against death, and through death is to be reborn. He was also welcomed into the fold of the Forge Masters, who saw his artistry and perseverance to be qualities deserving to be part of such an ancient Legacy. His new life as a Mage opened a new world to him, a world that is much more colorful than the bleak world that he once saw. In this world hard work is rewarded, and is simply not an act of throwing eggs at a wall hoping for their impacts to leave a mark. Here he was challenged and rewarded, and in this new life he was given the privilege and chance to be reborn.

Gerard Smith is dead and even if he still lives he simply awaits the end. In the property that Wayland managed to own, Gerard manages the bookstore front as a nameless retiree. At the back in the residence where there is home and where his workshop lays, Wayland lives and prospers among worked steel and arcane implements. It is a graveyard, from which the death of an old life brings life to the new.

Gerard Smith is dead. Wayland the Mage lives on.

From lead to gold, death paves the way.

Sigrid Kappel
General Information

Name: Sigrid Kappel
Birthdate and Age: December 23rd, ????; Approximately 30.
Species (Vampire, Garou, Human, Changeling, Promethean, Ghost, etc.): Promethean
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 119lbs
Occupation: Tutor, Servant
Description or Image: Here! Borrowed from Pinterest.

Character Biography (at least two paragraphs):
Sigrid Kappel does not remember much of her life before she entered the von Achthoven mansion. One evening, her eyes had opened as she had been lying outside on the sidewalk, soaked to the skin by a rainstorm. Her body was cold, and unable to move. As if she had known that her body would not pull itself off the pavement, her head had lolled to the side so that her body could rest.

When she awakened, she was in a glorious mansion, and Gerrit von Achthoven spoke directly to her, as she lay on a couch recovering from her mysterious incident. She could stay, he had told her, as long as she worked for him. With no other recourse outside of the safe haven in which she now lay, she agreed, and once she had recovered, she became the housekeeper of one of the wealthiest families in London.

Sigrid lives in luxury, at least as much luxury as a housekeeper could have. The von Achthoven mansion in which she lives and works is a splendid monument of ivory halls, ornate family portraits and paintings, and the finest finery a socialite’s family could have in London. She does not remember much of her life before she came to this place, which might as well have been a castle to any outside witnesses. However, in the last three years since she has lived in London, she has kept the beautiful mansion clean for its denizens and visitors, a task which she has found satisfactory.

She is also the tutor to young Tabitha von Achthoven, the 19-year-old heiress of the Von Achthoven family. As the young woman’s tutor, she has been in-charge of giving her an education in femininity-embroidery, sewing, sketching, and dancing, among other things. Sigrid enjoys this duty as well, and often refers to Tabitha as “her Tabitha”. Likewise, the young debutante adores her kind, meek tutor, and strives to be like her.

But the truth is anything but gold and ivory.

Sigrid does not socialize very much outside of her home and work, and she lives and abides by certain strange house rules. She cannot read romance novels, she cannot wear black, and she is not allowed to look Lord Gerrit in the eyes. Even more strangely, during her time as a member of the von Achthoven household, she has noticed that she has the ability to heal others and to make plants grow or regrow, even in the winter. While she herself is aware of these abilities, her family does not seem to know of them, and so she must keep this part of herself under wraps.

All the while, she has become more determined to learn about herself, and why she had found herself unconscious on a sidewalk during that fateful rainy evening…

Cool, I have a post ready, do you want me to wait until you’ve got your first up?

Also, here’s the other App:

Character Biography (at least two paragraphs):

A family of chaos and mixed identity was the nest into which Vasily was born. A clockmaker and a midwife moved from the Russian Empire and gave birth to three children, Vasily being the youngest. Five people crammed into a London townhouse, and the father went to work in a clockmaker’s shop while the mother stayed home and cared for three energetic boys.

Vasily always enjoyed the cosmopolitan nature of London, the ability to shape life out of cobblestones and relics. As a child, he enjoyed visits to the London Zoo, and to the botanical gardens with his mother. At the same time, he found his creativity in collecting flowers from fields and roads to create small bouquets and arrangements to decorate his very crammed childhood home. While his brothers believed him to be eccentric, with his head constantly in the clouds, his parents encouraged their youngest son’s hobbies and even supplied him with the flowers to arrange around his house. Anything to keep their children distracted from understanding how much they had struggled just to keep their small living space.

An exemplar but disorganized student, Vasily often found himself getting top grades, but then being berated by his teacher for having a sloppy workspace. The budding scholar found no use in keeping notes in one place as long as he got the grades and results he wanted. Nobody else could find his work except for him, and he was fine with such conditions. However, a scandal in his third year related to his relationship with a classmate led to him having to attend a boarding school for his last year of high school, and with no friends and other commitments, Vasily dove deep into his research and prepared himself for what he hoped would be a budding academic career at Cambridge. While he did get into Cambridge in the summer of 1883, said experience was still not the most exciting of his summer that year.

In August of 1883, Vasily became seriously ill with a fever. When the fever would not shake for two weeks, the family physician suggested that the rest of the family take a vacation for the health of the rest of its members, while he rested at home with the specialized oversight of said doctor. Said doctor, in reality, was a skilled Mastigos who subjected his patient to a set of strange tests and hallucinations in order to test the limits of the human mind. When a hallucination of his old classmate drove him over the edge, Vasily picked-up his father’s shotgun and aimed it at the cruel doctor. To this day, he does not remember whether or not he fired a shot at him. All he knew was that the doctor’s body, unwounded, was on the floor, and flowers and vines were blooming out of his mouth, nose, and chest. When the young academic saw the damage, and the doctor’s body had disappeared, all he found in his place was a beautiful flower arrangement in a vase with his name written in gold.

From that moment, Vasily Mikhailov was a Thyrsus.

Finding a usage for his newfound powers was not difficult. He initially used it to discreetly duplicate flowers for a budding florist’s business, which helped him to gain the money to move to his own apartment. In the process of making repairs to his new work building and apartment after a rather raucous fight with a customer, he then also met his current lifelong friend, Wayland. Coincidentally enough, Wayland was another Mage, and the two of them banded together as misfits in a secret society which was far larger than either of them could have dreamed.

Name: Cormac Dunne
Birthdate and Age: February 6th, 1845 (43)
Species: Human - Kinfolk (Fianna)
Height: 6ft
Weight: 140lbs
Occupation: Police, Detective Sergeant
Description or Image:

Character Biography: Cormac Dunne was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1845 to a family of middling means. Over six months later, Ireland was struck by the potato blight that sparked the Great Famine due to widespread crop failures. The Dunne family would ultimately one of many families that would leave Ireland, settling in London when Cormac was still just a toddler and thus the only memories of his childhood is of growing up in London. He had a somewhat lawless childhood, frequently earning the wrath of irate shopkeepers and stallholders as well as run-ins with the police.

Life would change for Cormac when recruiting sergeants encouraged him to join the British Army, possibly saving him from a life of crime in the process. Life as a soldier of the Crown was harsh for the young Cormac, especially as he was sent out to Africa to serve during the Mahdist Revolt. He eventually rose up the ranks to become an army sergeant earning the respect of his men but also their fear as he became infamous for his violent rages in the midst of combat. It was in Egypt that he met a mysterious stranger who identified themselves as a Strider and identified Cormac as 'kin of the Stag', the stranger insisted on giving Cormac a tattoo as a 'mark of protection' which Cormac reluctantly excepted.

After being discharged from the army, Cormac made his way back to London and joined the Metropolitan Police and was posted to H Division in Whitechapel where he again rose up the ranks to become sergeant. At this time he also earned the reputation for being a lonely, brooding man with a short temper. In addition, he learnt some truths about his heritage and of things that laid beyond the vision of normal mortals.

Name: Harry Bryan (born: Henry de Brabant)
Birthdate and Age: 5th of October, 1582 (O.S. / Oct. 16th N.S.), thus 305 years since birth. More importantly maybe: 274 years since the Embrace. He looks forever 31.
Species: Vampire
Height: 1.81m
Weight: 94kg
Occupation: Bar Patron, occasionally gambler and bookmaker
Description or Image:
Image

Character Biography:
He was brought across 1614, after discovering the secret, that a rival nobleman, Godfre of Jüttich, was a vampire. Godfre ensured the Camarilla he would take care of the problem, but Wikerus de Brabant (an ancestor of Henry and silent family protector) was faster, turned him into a vampire instead, securing the masquerade. The fact that his house of the Wallonian de Brabant had been rumored to harbor Pro-Dutch sentiments and his second cousin, the Duke of the Spanish Netherlands wanted to get rid of them for a while gave Henry a good alibi to pack his shit and move to Amsterdam in the middle of the night. There, in a Vampire coven he learned about the advantages and restrictions of the un-life as a vampire.

In 1660 he moved to London for the first time, where his Sire had a successful underground "Fight Club" business running. From him, Henry learned about the legacy of the Brujah as the learned clan. He learned about his masters view on vampire and human politics and the dangers of the British hegemonic Empire for the world. For a few years, Henry even studied history and philosophy in Cambridge (without a degree).
The late 17th century was a troubled time, especially for the Brujah of London and Wikerus decided to move Henry out of the crosshairs of their enemies. Henry moved to Guiana. In the new world, vampires were just now getting a hold and had to prove themselves against the Camazotz and Balam shapeshifters (Werebats and -jaguars).

In 1698 Henry did the classic mistake of Vampires around age 100. Settling into the immortal life and looking at the humans around them, realizing what he can no longer have, he fell in love. The only blessing was, that his wife, Coulehueyou was a witch and already familiar with the world of darkness and as such it was not a violation of the masquerade. However, this did not mean that either the local Vampires nor the Magi condoned this relationship. 10 years later, the couple returned to Europe, in search of Wikerus to turn her, too. But the Sire was nowhere to be found. Yet, Henry found something almost as good, an Elder who taught Henry how to perform the Embrace himself. And so he did. It was a rather traumatic experience for his wife, who was suddenly without her arcane powers (a side effect of the Embrace neither of the two knew about beforehand). Bitter with regret, Coulehueyou left Henry only a few month later.

In the 18th century Henry traveled Europe, joining several coteries. The Brujah reformed under new management and the new leaders wanted to know little of Wikerus de Brabant's old teachings about enlightened warrior-philosophy. While Henry established a loose network of contacts to vampires of his own clan, he preferred his closer connections to be to vampires of other clans, as long as they were of decent character. While his vicious strength in combat was most priced he also picked various cover identities, that allowed him to keep his ears on the pulse, to know what is going on on the street.

In 1775 Henry moved to the American colonies of the British. When the war of Independence broke out, he worked as a body-stripper, sutler, procurer and spy. Behind the scenes, there was a surge in Sabbat activity in the 13 Colonies and he was among the Camarilla thugs to keep them in check. Nevertheless, Henry also found enough time to contribute to the war effort of the Humans, siding with the Americans. After the war, he cashed in favours he had collected and celebrated a couple of pleasant decades. He also did a few long-term investments in the time, that would benefit his "descendants" (aka. later cover identities of himself) even a century later.

In 1809, shortly after Henry had assumed a new identity as his own son Harry, his Sire Wikerus, who now went by Ludwig, resurfaced. Ludwig had sided with the Anarchs, even though he still very much followed the laws of the Camarilla - except for obedience to his clan elders, who he regarded as punks, hooligans and (worst of all) usurpers. Knowing that this philosophy was probably not reaching all the way up to the Methuselahs or their Childes, Ludwig requested of Harry to keep his eyes and ears open on news regarding the inner clan politics. It was not until the 1861 that the plan bore fruits. Ludwig made his move against 3 influential kindred in the clan, while assuring the patronage of a 6th generation elder open to the True Brujah ideals. Carefully attacking their reputation and assets, he could discredit his rivals and was re-invited in the clan.

In the US Civil War, Harry took the side of the North, having lived in New York and Pennsylvania for the last two identities. While he had to adopt to a new style of army organisation that rendered sutlers more or less obsolete, Harry was still able to make himself useful as a spy. However after the war, some journalists started searching for a spy mentioned in various northern documents and Harry decided to move back to the old world. After staying in Dublin for 15 years, he once again moved to London, opening a bar. The bar was primarily directed towards mortals with the front business earning the mayor share of the income. Lately he opened up a backroom for gambling and light black-market deals and a back-backroom for vampires to rent if they arrive in London.

Statistics

Strengths: Strength, Social, Wit

Weakness: Stamina, Perception

Weapons Proficiencies: Short Range (Cutlass, dagger), Middle Range weapons (Remington Rider 1870 DA Revolver)

Additional Skills:
- Poliglot: Having travelled far and wide, Harry is fluent in German, Dutch, English, French and Spanish. He formerly learned fluent Flemish, Latin and Carib, broken Portuguese and Italian and rudimentary Polish and Akawaio but has not spoken any of those in a while and probably forgot a lot.
- Adept in Streetlore: Harry can easily fit in with the people "on the street". He currently knows the manners and customs of the criminals, squatters and working class people in London and can mimic their dialect perfectly.
- Basic Forgery: Having un-lived with only loose connections to the vampire community, Harry had to learn for himself how to forge new identities and official-looking documents.
- Adept Chef: While Harry had countless cover-identity jobs, he often came down to working in bars, taverns, inns, restaurants and soup-kitchens. As such he learned to brew beer, to cook and generally how to organise a kitchen. He has the basic knowledge of the logistics of running a bar, too.
- Basic Politics: Having observed the people in power, Harry can predict demographic trends in political opinion, class-identity, government action, etc.
- Basic Espionage: Harry helped the military as spy in two wars. He knows how to observe without being noticed, though his knowledge of coded messages is two decades outdated by now.

Clan: Brujah
Bloodline: Baseline. While Wikerus sympathised with and tried to emulate the "True Brujah" bloodline (and tried to teach Harry to do the same) this was ultimately only behaviour, not nature.
Demeanor: Bon Vivant - Harry does not want to be taken all seriously. He enjoys a good night of carousers enjoying themselves in his bar.
Sire: Wikerus de Brabant
Generation: 11th
Disciplines:
Celerity 2
Potence 2
Presence 3

Given how vampires are scaled in WOD, 3 total Disciplines seems like a good start, with a limit of 4 points per Discipline. If you want to unlock more, you can ask the Storyteller team (which would include Morrdh and I), and we’ll see about putting you on that path.

Name: Alexandra Jäger
Birthdate and Age: May 13th, 1864 (24)
Species: Human
Height: 1.86m
Weight: 86kg
Occupation: Hunter
Image:
Image

Description: Alexandra is a tall pale skinned woman with black hair and grey eyes. She can usually be found wearing a long black leather jacket. Tends to wear black turtlenecks and pants that fit closely to a recognizably powerful physique. Put it bluntly, Alexandra has the air of someone with experience breaking other people's bodies with her own.

Character Biography: Alexandra was born on Friday, May 13th, 1864 in Prussia, to a British mother and Prussian officer. Her mother died in child birth, likely to her already considerable size at birth. The years, she would have an upper middle class up bringing, having her tutored in english and her father did care for her. But as she got older, he reminded him more and more of her mother and he opted to send her to live with her grand parents in England. They would then send her to a boarding school for girls.

At first she was bullied for her height and accent. She'd rectify this by learning how and when to ambush her bullies, beating them up without witnesses. It wasn't long after that before they learned to stop messing with her.

But Alexandra would grow to enjoy the thrill of the brawl, particularly as someone who's reach tended to give her an advantage. So I by her teens, she would end up participating in the brutal world of underground woman's boxing and wrestling. By 16 she had built quite a name for herself and had earned a considerable amount of money.

Until one day on her 17th birthday another Friday the 13th, over a week after she had won a brutal prize bout, she was confronted in a back alley while with a friend by the woman she had defeated. An argument ensued and the woman, who revealed her self to be a vampire, swung a punch at Alexandra which she dodged, only for her friend to be hit in the head and fall awkwardly to the ground.

The vampire not intending this, paused for a moment, but Alexandra had no interest in mercy, seizing the opportunity to counter attack. After a traumatic back and forth, Alexandra managed to get the upper hand and attempted to strangle the vampire to death with wire. Before she could, she heard what sounded like police officers on their way to the alleyway. So she then chose to flee.

From that day forward, she'd have a mixture of guilt and anger. Subconsciously she suspected that part of why she managed to overcome the vampire is because she'd been trying to tell her to focus on saving her friend instead of trying to kill her, though consciously she remained angry at the vampire for starting the fight in the first place.

To 'atone' for this failure, she decided she'd dedicate her life to hunting the supernatural by joining the Resolute Knights of Saint George. Over the next 7 years as a hunter, she'd rack up an impressive resume for a hunter of her age. Despite being very quick witted, her academic knowledge is rather basic. Personality wise, she's an aquired taste and violence is her prefered means of conflict resolution.

Yeah, mostly, my options for filling in the "WIP" parts. Other than the Biography. I have some ideas for that. She's born on ad friday the 13th and her 17th birtdah is another friday 13th, in which she becomes imbued and decides to become a hunter.

General Information
Image

Name: Relia Gogean, Autarkis
Birthdate and Age: 8th December, 1442 / 445
Species: Vampire
Height: 172.72 cm / 5’8”
Weight: 49.9 kg / 110 Lbs
Occupation: Investor
Physical Description:
Slight and tall for the era into which she was born, Relia looks to be in her forties with black hair kept neat, clothes kept exceptionally simple. Fastidiously clean, simple perfection marks many of the aspects about Relia. Hairs are not allowed to be out of place, nails are not allowed to be too long, clothing cannot have a single loose thread, these are traits which the more observant may pick up on, though the wise would hesitate to mention the act to Relia herself. A piercing gaze is often the most notable facet to those who come face to face with Relia.
Character Biography:
Born in Romania, in the household of the Tzimisce known as Count Lazar, Relia began her life as a Revenant of the Grimaldi lineage. Possessing from that young age an exceptional tendency towards sanity, she quickly grew to resent those about her whom she saw as, in many cases, sheep who thought of themselves as wolves, tethered to their own depravities and stupidities. Beings incapable of self control, in her mind, were less than creatures as they had the opportunity to take such control and yet still refused to. Relia, luckily, was gifted in other ways, quickly growing to be a decent liar when the occasion called for it, such as with human entrepreneurs and Revenant watch dogs. She was also just as smart to know that staying among Lazar’s estate would be one of the quickest ways to develop her own bits of insanity and, at the soonest opportunities, jumped at the chance to accompany other Grimaldi away. Her skills abroad, away from Romania, to develop Lazar’s finances would earn some notice from the master himself. He was quick to notice such a rising star who had made travels to the Italian merchant families and the banks in Genoa, who was capable of such independence, and just as quick to ensure that such a rising being would not grow to challenge him in his own house.

Lazar had become, in those years, interested in Europe abroad, in the English as the War of the Roses had begun, in the idea of an island nation away from the peskiness of the Old Country and its numerous Garou folk, or even away from the Anarchs and the possibility of yet another revolt. In desiring a haven abroad, should Europe grow to be enveloped in a mass of vampire hunting or the other Clans begin wars, he fell upon a very simple idea of planting an agent there, one who would make that haven out of necessity, and who would be extremely loyal to him. So he went abroad to that island and took with him Relia. Near the mouth of the Thames River in Gravesend, rites of fidelity were given and then Lazar Embraced her.

As a vampire, Relia grew to become a generally capable agent of industry. Loaning money from Genoa into English industries, such investments soon repaid themselves to the Italian merchants and, just as quickly, would develop into a household for Relia herself. Feeding regularly on fishermen and drunk sailors who found themselves on the streets at night, such disappearances would become blamed on the Thames, it becoming more commonly known that Gravesend was a dangerous place to drown. As the town itself grew, along with the rest of the areas near London, so too would her own household. Eventually she came to build a manor at Gravesend, employing several dozen staff who invariably became Revenants to her own bidding. After several decades, however, she would grow even more reclusive than a Tzimisce might normally be, as she was theoretically quite dead by human standards, and began to deal with mortal merchants through her own Grimaldi. Eventually, Relia developed a degree of Vicissitude which gradually allowed her to masquerade as her own supposed children, and she would go on to attend her funeral several times over to a deliberately small crowd. The graveyard outside her manor would slowly expand with such false people.

In the 1600s, her own Sire would meet his end in a brief Anarch revolt aimed to cut down the elders once again, and with such an end Relia gained a minor fortune by her thinly kept connections to various members in his household. Since then, while continuing her investments in the shipyards at Chatham and Sheerness which have remained exceptionally profitable, Relia has also developed commercial interests in the textile industries of the country, such as Shewsbury and Coldharbor, and the coal mines in Kent and Cumbria. With the death of her own sire, however, Relia has remained separate from traditional Tzimisce politics and the Voivodes, seeking instead to develop for herself an eternal system of a hearth to protect her, blood and cash to sustain her.

Despite this, and the common isolation, Relia has hosted several events in London which have mainly starred members of the Daughters of Cacophony, as well as an invited select few of the elders, which have somewhat served to cement her as a neutral party in the various vampire politicking. Rumors in impolite company even suggest Relia has dealings with Garou, namely the Glass Walkers, though none have been so bold as to directly suggest such things. What has been notable, however, is the lack of any knowledge at all on Relia indulging in the habits which all Tzimisce notionally take part in, that of torture, which have led to that same impolite company at times suggesting that she is not Tzimisce at all. The intentions she has for doing any of these things are not publicly known.

General Information

Name: Willis Philips
Birthdate and Age: May 31, 1767; (121)
Species: Vampire
Height: 5'11''
Weight: 180 lbs
Occupation: Courier
Description or Image:
Clan: Banu Haqim
Demeanor: Confused Veteran
Sire: Al-Qahir ibn Azim
Generation (10th to Most Present): 10th
Bloodline: Assamites
Disciplines: Fortitude (4), Obfuscate (2), Celerity (2)
Character Biography:

Who was I before my first death? Let's see: I served in the military, once a young officer of Her Majesty's Royal Dragoon Regiment. In addition to my combat training, I learned survival techniques in the wilderness of Scotland and Wales, how to move fast and stay out of trouble, and how to issue both orders and threats.

I still remember the last time I saw the sun. I was so focused in those days. Life was so clear. I knew what I was going to become. And then…

I was back in Britannia, dead broke and with a headache that never fully went away, staying at the house of a "friend" who pitied me more than liked me. That evening, I stood on the little wrought-iron balcony, watching the sun set over a city I didn't like, idly making plans to leave. Maybe I would reenlist. Maybe I'd take up that job offer. Maybe I'd kill myself. I couldn't decide.

When my roommate shouted at me to pick up a box of his shit from the tobacconist, I shrugged and went downstairs. Of course, the store was closed. And when I came back it was night, the door was locked, and no one would answer.

And then a shadow detached itself from the wall of the alley.

When I rose again, burning with Hunger and sticky with my own blood, my killer said I am reborn a "Child of Haqim". He explained the situation as well as he could: his clan was looking to expand beyond the reach of their ancestral homeland in the Middle East, after their humiliation in Egypt. Already they had spread to other parts of the Muslim world, and he understood what his masters were looking for in the British Isles. Since I was born here, I would be even more useful to them.

My sire - an Assamite called Al-Qahir something, I just call him Azim, needed a bodyguard, someone who knew their way around a sword. Heavy blades are better at putting down Kindred than firearms, and Azim expected to make powerful enemies. And so, gifted with gifts of Blood that granted me inhuman speed and endurance, trained in the use of an actual scimitar- I followed Azim as bodyguard, enforcer, and the occasional courier for when he needed someone to ferry his strange friends and their strange artifacts around.

There were a couple of close calls in my span of unlife following Azim, when his charm, money, and discretion failed. There was this Tremere-backed brute squad that I had to pacify, and deal with over-zealous vampire hunters here and there. I had to cut off some hands and some heads. But bad times were always followed by a longer period of quiet. Life began to settle into a routine interspersed with the occasional excitement and bloodbath.

And then, one night after returning from a trip from Egypt, Azim was gone. His havens swarmed with hunters. I heard the kill team a second before they blew up my carriage. Hopelessly outnumbered, I kept my sword sheathed and fled into the night, relying on the power of my Blood to carry me swiftly to safety. I only took three or four bullets before I got clear.

Everything I owned was gone, but I still had some money stashed in a cache and someone powerful owed me a favor. I used it to activate a new identity, stayed low for a few years, and reemerged outside the mainland. No one there knew I was Clan Banu Haqim, and I was happy to keep it that way; I don't want anyone connecting me back to Azim. As far as the people who employ me are concerned, I'm a minor member of Clan Toreador, Embraced for the aesthetic value of my martial talents—the Degenerates enjoy that sort of performance, I'm told, and so far I've remained undetected, lurking at the edges of their society, running odd jobs for little pay.

Glad to hear it! Just have a small question on how large of a household, in terms of Revenants, would be acceptable for Relia, considering her manor is in the midst of a city? For that matter, how large of a brood would be acceptable? I was thinking two dozen or so for the former, but have no idea for the latter.

Two dozen possible NPCs to use would be a lot (even for me) for someone who’s not OP. I’d say start with 4-6. Your character is strong (and we’re starting this RP with Gnosis 3 Mages so it’s not like everyone else is weak as well), and if you want to make more as the plot goes on you can just ask for opportunities to do so.

Bear in mind that, when I say two dozen for the household, I'm referring to the total amount at the Gravesend manor. Such would include servants, cooks, permanent guards, accountants, and other managerial employees as well as the guards and houndmasters who would accompany their master elsewhere. I would definitely not be using them in an active sense. For the guards and houndmasters, I'm thinking 3 would be the best since such Revenants do have limited access to Disciplines.

Unless you understood before. If 4-6 for the total household was what you meant, than I suppose that would be acceptable with only one being a guard for Relia. I mainly meant for that larger number of two dozen because Revenants are hereditary families for her clan so it seemed to make sense.

Ahhh. Well as long as they’re not used in the active RP and are just sort of part of her setting, it’s fine. 4-6 Revenants for the household is fine.

We have a Discord if you’d like to come over there and discuss it. I want to make sure I’m not misunderstanding what you want as well.
