What is your favorite Architectural style?

Postby San Lumen » Tue Feb 07, 2023 9:48 am

I don't have one favorite but several. Art Deco is definitely up there and examples of it are the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building. I love the grandeur but also the simplicity of it.

Renaissance Revival is another favorite. An example of this would be the Texas State Capitol or the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I love the grandeur of it and welcoming nature.

I would also include Victorian. It has a very bright and smooth appearance. A very famous example of this the row of houses in San Francisco known as the Painted Ladies.

Im curious to hear peoples thoughts on this given how contentious the discussion on Brutalist architecture got. What are your favorites and why?

I love Art Deco too.

I also really like medieval Gothic architecture as shown in the many Cathedrals, Guild Halls, almshouses etc. that litter the English countryside where I live. Tudor/Jacobean and Palladian neo-classical designs are also honourable mentions, many English stately homes/country estate mansions are of these styles.

Yes. That is gorgeous as well. I would love a mansion like that.

Neoclassical, Victorian, and a few others. I think it depends.

All those are hideous. Boston City hall is built in this style.

Government buildings should be welcoming like this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_de_Ville,_Paris

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_State_Capitol

Both are examples of Renaissance Revival

Do not mention our city hall. It's a hideous sight. I'm glad I live further away from that horrific building, leave me near the dang airport.

Its a very uncomfortable building to look at. Its like something from a totalitarian state. It's not inviting at all.

The opposite - it turns me away, and I'm from here

Personally, Pombaline style, I fucking love it so much, its colorful and practical for it's intended uses, while not being grey and boring like brutalism.

Brutalist. I want my buildings to look strong and imposing.
The dead swans lay in the stagnant pool.
They lay. They rotted. They turned
Around occasionally.
Bits of flesh dropped off them from
Time to time.
And sank into the pool's mire.
They also smelt a great deal.

Why? A building should not give off a strong and imposing vibe. its the opposite of what you want.
