Should NationStates have its own Mastodon instance/account?

So, unless you've been living under a rock (at least Patrick Star from SpongeBob can leave his house), you have likely heard of a Twitter-alternative called Mastodon that's experiencing a surplus in the userbase.

If you don't know what Mastodon is, allow me to explain in the paragraph below:

Mastodon is a Twitter-alternative that operates on decentralized instances rather than a corporate-owned, centralized platform. Begun in 2016 by former (and discontented) Twitter user Eugen Rochko, the microblogging website has spiked in popularity in recent times.

Mastodon can be found within the Fediverse (portmanteau of "federation" and "universe"), a conglomerate of interconnected servers/webhosts that are ran by individual administrators.

Accounts on Mastodon can be used on a multitude of fellow servers, excluding defederated, moderated/banned, etc. servers.

Users are able to formulate their own instances, of which other users can enter said instance.

If you'd like to educate yourself more on this subject, anyone with a wi-fi signal can pay a visit to the official website.

I'm posting this thread to ask a question to the NS community: should we (NationStates, Max Barry) create our own Mastodon account/instance?

We have a Twitter account, and also *gulp* a Facebook account.

While both are unofficial, I don't see the harm in giving the community a presence on another platform; if anything, this would be similar to the 2 aforementioned accounts.

Any thoughts? Would love to hear 'em.

First of all, Ript has a rightward bias, and second, I've heard no reports of CP on Mastodon.

We just opened a discord information channel.

We barely use it(this is by design) , same with Twitter and Facebook.

We chose discord because we know lots of our player base already use it. Is this the case for mastodon?

Also, what mastodon server should our account be on? They differ wildly and we don't want to be on any that have a bad reputation (for one reason or another).

So, don't get your hopes up.

But if you do figure out answers to the questions, you can ask in technical for a more formal answer (I spoke here a bit fast and loose and didn't check with many fellow mods for an official stance)

Well, to answer your third question, we could create our own Mastodon instance; the platform provides moderation via application (you'll have to read more about it. I may have missed some details); furthermore, someone from the admin team could administer the instance, with them alternating every so often (it could be like an election! Yipee!)

Some people do use Mastodon currently, but a majority use Discord like you said; perhaps we could promote the platform on here? I already use it. (Find my account here!)

Finally, while we *sigh* may use it seldomly, it could spike in popularity unlike the other two. You gotta give it immense effort and a chance before you judge how it'll go.

In general an official page on another medium would be useful for times when the site is down to announce updates.

I dont think the specific where is as important as making sure the username knows it.
