How to roleplay handball

Given that Graintfjall has just about covered the basics in his HWC 25 opening thread, I will shamelessly quote his OP there:

Graintfjall wrote:If you are new to handball, check out the WikiPedia article; you might also want to look at how things went in the last World Cup.

Rosters

It is a common courtesy to your opponents to list a roster, even if you do not plan on roleplaying the tournament. At minimum this should be a list of 7 players including a goalkeeper; the recommended squad size is 16 players including 2 goalkeepers. Otherwise you can include any other information you think interesting or relevant, from player descriptions to coaching staff, uniforms to playing style.

Handball does not use style modifiers (you can list them if you want to give a sense of how your team plays, but they will have no mechanical impact on the scores) and all games will be played at neutral venues so you do not need to list home stadium information (though you are free to do so).

Please include some form of RP permissions, indicating your preferences for how your opponents roleplay:
Code: Select all
If my opponent RPs first, they may:
Choose my scorers Y/N
RP injuries to my players Y/N
RP yellow cards / 2-minute suspensions / red cards to my players (bold all that apply)
Godmode scoring / injury / other events (bold all that apply)

Disciplines in handball are yellow cards (basic warnings); 2-minute suspensions (for more serious offenses); and red cards (full ejections).

Godmoding is considered to be unusual events that might rarely or never happen in the course of a game. A player scoring a goal with their weak hand is not godmoding; a player scoring a goal by bouncing the ball off a passing pigeon is. Judgment calls on what constitutes godmoding are best resolved between players.

Please read the RP permissions of teams you play against. If you feel someone has not followed your RP permissions, please try to resolve the issue between the two of you. Repeated violation of others’ RP permissions may result in a loss of RP bonus or further penalty. In the event of any irresolvable dispute, the host’s decision will be final.

Format and tentative schedule

This tournament will play 8 groups of 4. After a single round robin held in Costa de Ouro, the top two nations from each group will proceed to a seeded playoff also held in Costa de Ouro. There will be no reseeding past the Round of 16. All dates are in US Central Time (UTC -6). Cutoff window will be 7pm-9pm CST on the dates specified; this will be early morning UTC for those in later timezones.

Handball World Cup 27 — Costa de Ouro

About Costa de Ouro
In the 16th century, Portuguese-speaking explorers from Morroseta headed west across the Mar de Solidão looking for the fabled Seven Cities of Antillia. Although they found an archipelago with eight islands and golden shores, they did not find those fabled cities — but they decided to call both their principal settlement on the principal island and the island itself Antillia, after the myth they had unsuccessfully chased. They had founded Costa de Ouro, named after its fabulous golden beaches (that, alas, they could not use as currency back home on Morroseta).

Beyond the centrally located Antillia, other major cities in the kingdom include Nova Lisboa and Albergaria on the island of Santa Maria and the grimy industrial city of São Alberto, also on Antillia island. Politically, Costa de Ouro has retained the monarchy under the Aviz dynasty (with His Majesty Pedro III currently on the throne). The islands are unified with Morroseta, on the main Astyrian continent, in a confederation called the Avissian Union.

The main international airport (Sonhos International Airport) is located in an "aerotropolis" around 30 minutes by train from the main city in the center of the island. A robust network of domestic flights connects the main islands in Costa de Ouro; ferries frequently ply the waters between the islands as well. Air Terranea is the largest non-Anaian carrier, but the Quebeçois airlines also have a significant market share for intra-Anaian flights.

Portuguese is the most common language, but travelers can get by in English, French, or Nikolian, common because of the tourist clientele that frequents Costa de Ouro. Whatever you do, do not try to address a costenho in Spanish. You'll just make yourself look like an idiot.

Map of Costa de Ouro

Venues and host cities
Antillia
Antillia itself is a city of around 835,000 people with immense colonial charm, much in the Portuguese Manueline style common during the Age of Discovery. Outside of competition, spectators and players can partake in the city's historic districts, take in a bit of sun at the country's namesake beaches (including the Igreja do Cristo beach, which makes for a nice day trip from Antillia), or scuba and snorkel in the equatorial waters just offshore. Visitors can also enjoy the cuisine at a variety of small cafes, some of which specialize in fish dishes such as moqueca costenha and pastries called pastéis.

Players have the option of staying at the baroque Hotel Alameda, a ten-minute walk from the practice courts and grounds, or at one of the numerous and quaint pousadas that dot the city center. Both options are renowned for their hospitality, as befitting an extremely friendly people. Alternatively, if players desire more modern accommodation, they could stay at a townhouse or condo in the swanky postmodern Vila do Pôr-do-Sol, about a 30-minute drive south from the city center.

There are three venues in the greater Antillia urban area:

Arena Dourado (cap. 10,000), located in the Vila do Pôr-do-Sol area, is the biggest multipurpose indoor arena in Costa de Ouro. It will host all matches for Group A.
Universidade Real do Réi Pedro I (cap. 2,500) is located in the city center, with older architecture (which is perhaps in need of a remodel). It will host all matches for Group B.
Sonhos International Arena (cap. 5,000) is the newest and swankiest arena in the country, located in the airport complex in the center of the island. It will host Group C.

Santa Maria
Perhaps better known to tennis fans as the host of several Tier 2 and Tier 3 tournaments during the ancient days of the NSTT, Santa Maria was one of the first towns founded on the third-largest island in the Costenho chain. As a gateway to the mountains that form the backbone of Santa Maria, the town has a number of hostels and tourist accommodations, with a lot of movement given its status as a launching pad for tours to the inland. A number of people also make day trips up to Fortaleza, where a colonial-era fort stood guard against pirates. The stadium, capacity 3.111, is actually located between Fortaleza and Santa Maria: Arena da Costa will host Group D.

Nova Lisboa
Nova Lisboa is the largest city on the island of Santa Maria. Despite its name, the tourism board would NOT encourage you to think of Lisbon when thinking of this city; you'd be massively disappointed, as frankly Nova Lisboa is quite boring. Since Santa Maria has taken the title of tourist center on the island and Fortaleza actually has the interesting architecture (read: forts), the city doesn't get much tourist activity, and it probably won't be prepared at all for visitors to the Handball World Cup. Arena dos Portugueses (cap. 1,000) will host Group E.

Nova Hasiera
This port city on the southern tip of Antillia Island was founded by Audioslavian migrants/refugees; therefore, the migrants named it after the town that they came from, Hasiera. Frankly, there's not much of interest in the town itself; it's mainly a base camp for tourists exploring the beaches along the eastern side of Antillia Island and a port for various whale watching and reef diving expeditions along the channels among the Costenho islands. But count on an interesting melange of architectural styles in this town with quick roadway connections to Antillia and a quick ferry connection to Fortaleza. Fénix Arena (cap. 2,500) will host Group F.

Tarrafal
Tarrafal is the biggest population center on São Antonio, the second largest island in the Costenho chain. The island itself is famous for its production of pineapples, tea, and pineapple liqueur, and Tarrafal serves as a major port for processing those commodities for export. A handball club, João Gonçalves Zarco, is in fact based in the town, named after the arena that the club plays in... which, in turn, was named after one of the explorers that discovered Costa de Ouro. João Gonçalves Zarco Arena (cap. 2,000) will host Group G.

São Nicolau
Only a short ferry ride away from Tarrafal, the island of São Nicolau boasts a more tranquil, village-like atmosphere, with the major population center perched precariously on a hillside overlooking the Sea of Champions. The harbor is a major fishing center, and strangely enough, the island also boasts its own professional handball team, the very creatively named São Nicolau CH. Its arena, the rather run-down São Nicolau Arena, can hold around 1,500 spectators; it will host Group H.

Each stadium will also host two Round of 16 matches; games from the quarterfinals onwards will be hosted on Antillia Island itself only, to reduce the travel burden among the islands.

HANDBALL WORLD CUP - COSTA DE OURO

BY

IVAN BOŽIĆ

Dear viewers, good afternoon and welcome.
The World Handball Championship has started. This championship will be a real test for our mix team. After this championship, the Olympic Games begin and then the new handball club season in the domestic leagues. The host of this world championship is Costa De Ouro, and we are loocking to better result than HWC26 in Bollonich.
In Bollonich we are stoped in group stage with third place in group.
At the Games of the XV Olympiad in Electrum, our men's team played in the semi-finals, but in the game for bronze, they lost to the Diacersia team with 32-24.
The women's team unfortunately did not make it to the fight for medals because Quebec and Shingoryeo was the better team.

Group 2
HUElavia
Srednjaci
Caribbia
Le est de Espanya

Our team is led from the captain's position by Antonija Ružić. Antonija is our highest paid athlete in Srednjaci and also one of the best handball players in the world, and we believe that she is the best in her position.
However, another name stands out and that is the brilliant pivot from the men's league, Damir Vrenić. Damir is an amazing twenty-four-year-old player from RK Plava Laguna, he is promoted to one irreplaceable player in the national team. He amazes the handball world with his games. Of course, there are other stars of our handball, such as Tihana Udvarić, Adela Musić on goal and Viktorija Udovčić on the right wing.
The change in the team is that some standard players have lost their place in the starting lineup such as Golub and Prgomet. We are happy with the fact that we have young players aged 19 and 20 who could get some minutes in this championship.
Here is rest of squad.

Juvencus National Handball Team

Juvencus as a nation owes a lot to handball for its service in helping Juvencus step out of its domesticated Sonnelian shell into the hardship of multiversal sports competitions in a place no better than the Sonnelian powerhouse of Drawkland, Juvencus' closest trading partner and ally. Handball was the very first sport that Juvencus was represented on in an international level, when the team entered Handball World Cup 18 finishing 4th place in the competititon and further inclining other sports teams to try their luck, namely the football team, which has been coined the handball team's original nickname "gli attaccanti" due to its offensive playstyle. However, after the surprising debutante appearance, future appearances did not follow suit in the handball world cups that followed with records being dusted in history as the pandemic made record holding difficult while everyone was focused on quarantine in order to ensure safe conditions in the fastest way possible, something that was achieved only recently.

Starters:
GK:Giancarlo Montessini
Centre:Roland Clarebert
LB:Stefano Alamani
LB:Darko Konstandinov
RB:Leonardo Cavallieri
CR:James Di Monieri
LW:Maximus Coiro
RW:Michelangelo D'Agosto

Substitutions:
GK:Angelo Piotri
GK:Serafim Arundieri
Centre:Gonzalo Gameiro
Centre:Sesto Iustini
LB:Judas Cantini
LB:Douglas Robinho
RB:Gialuigi Costa
RB:Geronimo Roti
CR:Danielle Di Roca
CR:Thiago Sabbattini
LW:Clarence Lumiere
LW:Carlos Ideale
RW:Stefano Carameleni
RW:Ezequiel Cavani

Coach: Justinianus Cabral
Assistant coach: Martino Insigne
Assistant coach: Destro Patini

No changes were recorded for the team, as most of the players had been performing out their minds in domestic competitions, but with domestic competition on the rise, many will be losing their spots in upcoming cups and it is all dependent on their performance in the 27th Handball World Cup held in Costa de Ouro, familiar opponents from all those years ago.

Kits created by No-Nonsense Sportswear initially for association football, but since the national association football team switched kits they are used in other sports, for that service, we thank them!

THIS IS NOT A DAMN NEWSPAPER
By:Diego Bortelli

HANDBALL? WHAT THE FUCK AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?

I took on way too many projects to keep track of, honestly one of the biggest and most regrettable decisions of my life to be taking from my gorgeous new apartment in the middle of old Torona. We are currently under the handball world cup fever, one of my favorite periods to be a Juven sports fan despite the traction this sport's getting compared to football. Albeit really popular it just doesn't feel as universal as good ol' calcio or even basketball nowadays.

Really there is not much to say about the sport, I just miss the days where we lied about our nation to conceal our true identity. All those headlines about made up territories, ancient territories brought to today or Pomena being inland and the Sulima river being super important on this day and age, hilarious. Or perhaps most notably when we entered the court and we gave almost every single side a piece of what it means to play Juven handball. We gave them that gli attaccanti treatment that I don't think anyone's really seeing anymore in our dear pallamano, which honestly is depressing to say the least.

So this article will remain short by my standards cause there is genuinely not much yapping to say besides the fact that lololol we did good once and we are still on the high literally 9 editions later as if we have not choked on every second stage we have gone through since. We need a good and deep run for me to even pick up the courage to write something truly entertaining to read. I am no magician, I need inspiration too you dig?

Despite this I will utter out our groupmates for our trip to Costa de Ouro, our familiar foes from that one time. If only I knew better portuguese that time I would have..(I've been advised not to keep this joke).

Anyway, without further ado, we are on group D. Hehe, D. Anyway, our groupmates are StrayaRoos for which I have clearly nothing to say about, but their name sounds cool. I heard their government is ran by a 13 year old, I hope that this is not the case. Next up it is.. who? Sky Rea.. Ri.. Reav... Reavers? Yea, no clue. Last but not least, a fellow Sonnelian side called West Barrack and East Obama, which apparently is some sensation based off of an RLStates figure. Sounds like a crazy nation but I would be keeping my eyes on them.

Alas, that is all from me, I believe I will be tucking myself to sleep tonight hopefully without any interference by the Obaman secret police for outing their secret like that.

The Capitol Royals will be representing the Riftan Empire this HWC. The Royals are a bailball team, which is a Riftan sport very similar to handball. The team has been “training tirelessly since the moment they received an offer to participate” according to HC Levy Rozwick. The team has been, for the one hundred and twelfth year, a participant in the Bailball National Championship, winning 47% of their appearances. Since their induction into the League in 292 B.C., a staggering 2,315 years ago, the team has won 52% of their regular season games, the highest all-time. Though it has had many different monikers since then, the club has nearly always been a powerhouse, with the exception of the worst years of any team ever from 1296-1381.

Since then, they have appeared in the League playoffs all but seven years, with one being a post-season ban due to a (later proven false) armed robbery scandal involving a player. The team’s motto, a simple “Champions”, has proven true, with the club’s highest ever count of Championships at 4,369. The next highest team, the Savan Red Tide, has 4,275.

As of now, the team is undefeated in the regular season and playoffs, competing for the National Championship in February. The team won last year’s Championship by a single goal with twelve seconds on the clock. This year, they have played a much more difficult schedule, with their last five regular-season games being against top 13 teams.
-
The roster of the Royals is currently the best in the League due to the deep pockets that come with thousands of years of revenue. Goalkeeper Vel Grotton is known for his aggressive defense and rapid reflexes to deflect incoming threats. He has also acted as goalkeeper for his regional football (or soccer) team, giving him a small added advantage in the position. Veteran players Shulo Stellan and Capeill Maphas are serious threats due to their years of work in unofficial handball and they will doubtlessly bring their experience in training the rest of the team. Backs Ren Serra, Razall Nih, and Soneth Kah are the younger players on the team, though all of which were First Round picks in the RBL Draft’s recent years, with Razall Nih being first overall. Pivot Darius Xeni played three years with the Savan Red Tide and Fierfield Surge each, being voted League MVP twice.

We may see the team perform extremely well, just okay, or even horrible, but they won’t lose their support unless they fall in the Bailball National Championship a few weeks afterwards.

However, the team will play a lot of two-pivot sets with Tístran and Þjífþælmidr.

SYLESTONE NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

THE 27TH HANDBALL WORLD CUP

Overview

After finally defeating Bollonich for the first time two years ago - and on their home soil as well - Sylestone have finally risen to the very pinnacle of handball. With a second- and third-placed finish in World Cups 24 and 25 respectively, to finally finish first was a massive relief for everyone involved. With a much younger squad, the side was not expected to do as well without the likes of Isla McCartney or Bianca Gotch and with losses to HUElavia and Gatchingerrak Union sending the Hawthorns spiralling to a 2-2 record halfway through the group stage, that lack of experience and extra youthful exuberance seemed to catalyse a remarkable downfall. Yet, it was not to be as the Hawthorns came back firing, demoralising both of those sides they defeated to finish first in the group and gain a huge advantage heading into the second group stage. Again, a loss to Bollonich made things tough as the side went into the final game of the round needing a victory over Abanhfleft in order to qualify for the semifinals.

At that point, something seemed to click for the Hawthorns, as it had in the first group stage. With only three wins needed to lift the trophy, they came out firing against Abanhfleft and despite encountering stocky resistance, were able to emerge on top rather comfortably. In the semifinal, Græntfjall were handed a seven-goal hiding as the Esportivans marched on to the final and a rematch against Bollonich. Despite taking a deficit heading into half time, the Hawthorns were able to completely turn it around as they took the lead again, running headlong towards their first-ever win over the Pavolan nation. A late charge ensured that it would be the case, sending the country into raptures as they came out on top, 31 goals to 26. The Handball World Cup was theirs and for the first time, so was the #1 rank.

A few changes have been made in the squad from the last Handball World Cup and although they have been no proper retirements, a couple of players are certainly past their best. Samantha Hussey, for one, appears certain to be relegated to the bench with Lucas Bochsa continuing to rise through the ranks, while Zane Ecuyer’s recent performances have earned the 23-year-old a place over Ellie McKean on the right wing. Another 23-year-old, Sophia Tweddle, has also found her way into the group over Pesfield Poopers goalkeeper Gabrielle Rowan. This is the advantage of having a world class domestic program, isn’t it? You know exactly who is in form.

Quebec and Shingoryeo Men's and Women's National Handball Teams - HWC 27

The Quebecois Handball Federation (QHF), in continuation of its practice also shared by Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation (RQVF), Basketball Quebec (BQ) and Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA), is proud to continue its practice of sending mixed teams with expanded rosters to international competitions. In regards to their opponents' preferences to play the men, women or mixed teams, will remain flexible in advanced consultation with their opponents (OOC: go ahead and ask me).

HANDBALL IN QUEBEC AND SHINGORYEO

Handball is the number one summer indoor sport in Quebec and Shingoryeo, a spot it comfortably holds with packed stands. While the sport itself doesn't hold the 30,000+ crowd the gridiron or baseball matches normally get, the relative accessibility of handball more than cover such deficiency. Quebec and Shingoryeo does have a 3-tier, dualsex pyramid for handball, with the 14-team Ligue-Boreale at the very top of the pyramid.

Unfortunately, the international results for the Quebecois national teams have yet to really reflect their popularity. Following the double gold at Nassau Bay-Centralis, the three-decade long (and ongoing) dispute between Quebecois Handball Federation, the Players Association, and the Ligue-Boreale, had meant that the Quebecois national teams rarely entered over last three decades, if ever, with a full squad, with many refusing to participate internationally over last thirty years. Fortunately, the recent cycles' improvements, highlighted by the women's national team's performance in Bunjil just six years ago and double gold at home in Twin Cities, would suggest that there is lot more to look forward down the line.

STYLISTICS

Stylistically, Team Quebec distances itself from the usual style of brutal physicality found in other sports. Both men and women are finesse and speed-driven, preferring to overlap and pass a lot before finding lots of opportunities, which makes sense given their relatively shorter height. The team's ability to come up with endless combinations, thanks to its strengths on the most important position in centre back, is what's going to make this team hard to play against. They will try to stay as flexible as possible on positionality between the backs, where they do enjoy a relatively better depth than on the wings, and on right side of the court. That is what they will use in order to overcome deficiencies on height and also on wing play.

Unfortunately, they are somewhat weaker on wingers though they rely a lot on wing play, and the relative imbalance between the left and the right side of the attack is what the Quebecois need to fix as well. The goalkeepers, for most part, are pretty good, occasional troubles on the empty net aside. Oh, and whether they succeed or fail on a match-to-match basis will really come down to how many turnovers they can produce- those they will probably have to work bit more off.

Thus, expect them to try scoring from the sides than the centre, though if they do so up the middle, they will be going for 9m shot instead of a 3m shot or even 7m shot. Empty goal situations are always good for them as well. They will convert turnovers too, as long as they can get enough of them...

The Quebecois Handball Federation will be sending a preliminary entry that consists of two 14-team lists: Primary team and the Alternates. The primary team will be where the vast majority of the players (at least 9 of the entry before every match) will take part, while the alternates will exist to provide two purposes: 1) to provide full-game drills and match situations during practices, and 2) to provide healthy competition within the team. With the recommended squad size being 16 players (14 field players+2 goalkeepers), it is safe to assume that around 4-6 players on the alternates will also see playing time each match.

Gatchingerrak Union Handball Team
Trigramme: GGU
Denonym: Gatchin/Unionian
Nickname: Seven Stars

Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori nations, shortened as the Gatchingerrak Union, is a cultural and political alliance of four countries of the Quebecois Commonwealth located in mid-southern Rushmore (Norrskie Zasousti, Norrehavn, Gatchinovo and Novopetrograd). The three kingdoms and the citystate, while independent nations of own, do have the Gatchingerrak Union as a way to establish their common zone, where their main goals are to advance cooperation in military, cultural, economic and energy matters. It shares land border with Vaugania and Norrhem to the west, while bits of the east touch Phoenigetzusta. The combined population of the union are estimated to be around 81 million.

While its trio of nations have always fought with one another for centuries, Gatchingerrak Union is a culturally diverse nation with growing importance outside to that of the Quebecois Commonwealth. Its population is ethnically diverse, with the eastern, Novopetrogradian half of the realms primarily Slavic, while the Western half is divided to primarily Nordic Norrehavn on north and slavic Norrskie Zasousti on the south. Somewhere in middle of the lake, which faces all of the three nations, stands the island that is nowadays known as the citystate of Gatchinovo, the ancient place known for its significance on trades and diplomacy among the Rushmori realms of the Quebecois Commonwealth. It is where the Accord between the 4 states were signed in year 2030 (around the time of WC78), to promise co-prosperity among the rivalling states whose cooperation is needed more than ever. Its economy is a mix of natural resources and heavy manufacturing for it.

THE TEAM

Head Coach: Samuil Becker, 42
Assistant Coaches: Gennadiy Petitpa, 48
Marina Nesterenko, 46

The Gatchingerrak Superliga is a mixed-gender league, with men and women and genderfluid peoples playing in the same league. This reflects in the national team selection, and fluidity with strategies will be sought out to reflect the mix. As with their Quebecois counterparts, the Gatchingerrak Handball (GatHan) will be sending a preliminary entry that consists of two 14-team lists: Primary team and the Alternates. The primary team will be where the vast majority of the players (at least 9 of the entry before every match) will take part, while the alternates will exist to provide two purposes: 1) to provide full-game drills and match situations during practices, and 2) to provide healthy competition within the team. Costa de Ouro to welcome Handball World Cup for the second time

After more than a seven-cup absence, Costa de Ouro will rejoin the Handball World Cup international scene after successfully bidding to host the tournament for a second time.

"We are proud to show off our beautiful nation to the multiverse, and we heartily welcome all competitors, support staff, and spectators to Costa de Ouro," said Liliana Cruz, head of Costa de Ouro's handball federation. "Teams will be able to enjoy world-class infrastructure and quality competition here in our own little corner of Anaia."

World-class infrastructure might be overstretching things, though, as most arenas are seemingly no bigger than university gymnasiums, and many are in a poor state of repair after decades of disinterest in handball competition.

At least the venues in Antillia are somewhat modern, and the infrastructure that supports millions of Anaian tourists ever year will also support competitors and their support staff. But on the outlying islands, arenas are more decrepit than world-class indeed.

Regardless, not many spectators may experience this interesting mix of ultra-modern and ultra-historic, so to speak. Indeed, the tournament has so far failed to attract much international interest, with the only major tourist pool entering the nation seemingly from Costa de Ouro's Anaian neighbors Quebec and Shingoryeo.

Quebec, as the number seven ranked team in international handball rankings, may be one of the favorites to win the title because of that high fan support (relatively speaking, of course), along with number one Sylestone and number three Graintfjall.

Given the tendency for dynasties in the HWC, Sylestone are probably the favorite of most bookies as the defending champion, though.

Of course, Costa de Ouro was the original HWC dynasty-holder, racking up three victories and three runners-up appearances to be the most successful nation in HWC history. But Red Blackiland, Savojarna, Bollonich and now Sylestone have established their own dynasties, with Savojarna and Sylestone on the hunt for their third titles in this edition of the cup.

Coached by Antillia Albatroz head coach Fernando Adriano Rocha, this national team does not have any returning winners or runners-up, however. (Some indeed have wondered whether a successful player should have coached the team, and of course, a switch will be entertained if the team does not perform well this tournament.)

Costa de Ouro is in Group A by virtue of their status as hosts; they will face off against Abanhfleft, whose colonies are omnipresent across the sporting world's major competitions; and the fellow unranked and unknown competitors The Republic of Covelandia and Melbergia.

Kelchtermans’ Last Stand?

At the halfway point of the opener against Sylestone and with a humiliating 9-17 scoreline on the board, many wondered whether the Whalers should not consider walking out and taking the plane back home (which was located conveniently close to the Sonhos International Arena). Our Esportivan brethren found the kindness in their heart to start rotating, ensuring that the final scoreline against the reigning regional and world champion remained acceptable. Still, it was a testimony of the large gap which stands between the Capnordic national team and the rest of the world.

As such, the second Esportivan showdown of the opening round immediately leaves no room for error. Dod Rava missed out on the regional trophy, but appeared with a fresh and talented formation in the opener. The team, headlined by Krzysztof Soria, even came close to a victory but lost by a point and so the boys from Anton Bodo equally are required to take the win to keep their chances for progression alive.

A difficult match for the Whalers who have now been beaten by all six Esportivan nations they encountered. A few times, such as against Natanians and Nosts or in the match-up with the Five United Clans, there were options for victory but in the decisive minutes of the game, the Whalers never showed the punch to grab that much-coveted win. In a nation which has a professional league set up, this quickly leads to finger-pointing and questioning the selection. Said efforts have focused lately on Wilfried Kelchtermans, the pivot of the team and in his long career chosen as MVP of the league on four occasions. Only last season, Kelchtermans came in third in said election, confirming that he remains a force to reckon in the domestic competition.

But that is where the criticism starts to form. The ball handling skills, the clever passes and the cunning in his positioning have never gone with Kelchtermans and it is an acceptable claim to say that he is (pun intended) the handiest player our nation has ever seen. But at this level and with this pace, the position requires more. It needs a physical power that has slowly but surely slipped from his play. With Greenhorn Noordende, this can sufficiently be masked by other skills but at this World Cup it no longer feels enough. The fresher and stronger Hawthorns could push him around and as such, dominate the play.

The calls for a send-off (with applause and respect for his career) that were already there after the Esportivan Trophy only became louder with tonight’s performance, especially as two young and eager alternatives are awaiting in the wings. Katarina Lyng might not be the most powerful player either, but there is a combination of stamina and swiftness in her physique which could give her the edge over the talented but sometimes ruthless Sebastian Boe. Either way, they still await their chance as long as coach Moerman keeps his preference with Kelchtermans. But only a win over Dod Rava seems to keep that point of view sustainable.

HANDBALL WORLD CUP - COSTA DE OURO

BY

IVAN BOŽIĆ

Nova Lisboa
Srednjaci 28
Caribia 24

Dear viewers, welcome to the show dedicated to handball. The biggest handball competition has started and the 27th edition is hosted by Costa De Ouro.
A beautiful country that we had the opportunity to get to know earlier through the tennis tournament won by our tennis players Leonid Farkaš and Goran Ibrahimović two seasons ago. Speaking of them, they are playing at the Cenian Open today, so let's wish them luck.
Let's get back to handball excitement. Our national team also played its first match at the championship.
In the city of Nova Lisboa, our team was better than Caribia with 28-24. On the wings of the great Antonija Ružić and Vrenić, our team dominated almost the entire match. Bojan Pandžić was excellent in goal and collected 12 saves. He entered instead of Adela Jusić because she didn't have a very successful day, she managed to make only 7 saves.

Our team started very strong and very well from the beginning of the game. With a great 5-1 defense, our players managed to take away ball from the opponents. With counters, half-counters and organized attacks, Srednjaci managed to create a big advantage of 7-1. By the half time, our main players were going to rest and Caribia managed to close the gap. We went into halftime with a score of 15-12 for us.

In the continuation of the match, our first team players again scored a series of 3 goals in a row and our advantage is again at +6. Our coach combined the squad with first team players and players from the bench. Tried defense variants 5-1 and 6-0.
Caribia managed to reduce the deficit by the end of the match, but not avoid defeat.

In our ranks, Antonija Ružić scored 9 goals, while Martin Vranić scored 7.

HEAD COACH - ANTUN MIOČ

"This was a good match for us. It seems to me that everything was laid out in our team. But this is only the first match and the championship is long and difficult. However, it is important to emphasize that we won and that all players got a chance. " said the coach after the game in a short address to the media.

ANTONIA RUŽIĆ SCORED 9 GOALS

"A great match for us. We are still in the phase of team building and our actions, but in the end it is the victory that counts. I am glad that all our players got the chance to play. It is important to feel the atmosphere of playing in big competitions." said Antonija Ružić

Men gathered at a table.
It's a cold night on the outskirts of Rawa, the capital of Dod Rava.
Four wealthy men sat around a table in a penthouse, glasses of cold vodka in hand. They were all successful investors, businessmen, owners and CEOs of the largest Dod Ravian companies, always looking for the next big thing. After an unsuccessful campaign in both World Cup 90 qualification and NSSCRA 12, the Dod Ravain's opened up for international sports once more. They see the recent surge in interest as a massive opportunity. So they gathered here to invest in sports, to sponsor teams, to form new ones, to bring international players into Dod Ravian sports leagues, or to promote a less popular sport.

"CEO": "Gentlemen, as you know, I've been doing some research, I sent you my results earlier; I hope you got to know them, I think we all think the same about this topic, I assume."

"Expert?": "Yes, we do. The sports industry is a humongous market. We could make a fortune if we play our cards right."

"Village man": "But there's a lot of competition. How do we differentiate ourselves?"

Lovley Chap: "I've got some contacts, I'll make some calls after our meeting to see what we can do."

"CEO": "I think we should focus on one or two sports and really make a big impact in those markets."

"Expert?": "I agree we need to diversify our portfolio a little. We can't put all our eggs in one basket."

"Village man": "What about investing in regional sports? We can try speedway, which is popular in some parts of Dod Rava, or we can try eSports for example."

"CEO": "I like the idea, but I think we need to start with something simple and without risk, like a simple game. Like football, but as we know, the market is pretty much taken as of now."

"Expert?": "Handball..."

"CEO": "Handball? Don't they only play it during P.E in school?"

"Expert?": "Well the league is small but it's professional, and our national team got to play at the Handball World cup 27 in Costa de Ouro, This gives us a couple opportunities; let me list some: sponsoring the league or the national team, creating a team, or sponsoring the league."

"CEO": "That's good, but let's wait till that lovely chap makes his calls. After that, we'll meet here again, and I'll text you to let you know. Now let's relax and drink! Gentelmen for future success!"

The men clinked their glasses in agreement and continued to discuss their investment plans, eager to tap into the potential of the sports market. They knew that there was risk involved, but they also knew that the reward could be huge. With their combined resources and expertise, they were confident they could make their investments pay off. But those thoughts quickly faded, and the penthouse was filled with laughter and the odour of alcohol and cigarettes.
As they sipped their vodka and discussed their next moves, the men were filled with excitement for the future. They were determined to make the most of this opportunity and continue to build their wealth and success.

Handball World Cup - Costa de Ouro

Antillia
Hello, Riftan Empire! The Capitol Royals played their first game of the HWC on the 27th, defeating Dod Rava’s handball team 24-23. The team played in the Sonhos International Arena, with a cap of 5,000 people. It is the newest arena in the Costa de Ouro, and is located in the airport complex in the center of the island of Antillia.

Shulo Stellan and Capeill Maphas played excellent on the wings, producing a combined 18 goals, nearly the team’s entire score. Vel Grotton in the goal stopped a very impressive 13 out of 21 goals early on before being subbed out due to fatigue. The Royals rallied after this sub, and kept the ball largely on their opponents’ side of the court.

The team started strong, getting a small early lead, 4-1. They lost their momentum shortly after, falling behind 13-9. After substituting Grotton for Paren Kotus, the team gained the advantage to close out the first half, entering the locker up 16-14.

The team fell behind again after halftime, 16-18 allowing Dod Rava four consecutive goals. The Royals returned strong again, and managed a one-score lead, 20-19. The match remained narrow, with the team ending up down by 2, 20-22. The team included a few substitutes and managed to get four goals without response, 24-22. Dod Rava achieved the last goal, however, and brought the score to 24-23.

Levy Rozwick -Head Coach

“Our team showed up strong today, and came away with a win. We played aggressive, we played smart. If you really watched the match, you can tell that there was some discomfort among our players, such as Vel [Grotton], due to the sudden change in sports. Even though we won, we won’t stop working, and we won’t stop playing hard. A game doesn’t determine a tournament, and we’ll get right to work for the next game”

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

This is the twelfth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in an international handball tournament. Handball is quite an obscure sport in the Democratic Republic, with no professional league established, and the handball department in the Commission on Sports and Games started out as just two men working out of a plastic table, but now their office has expanded to include three more coworkers and a bigger table. Even though the national handball team has suffered a downturn in form as of late, the rising interest was still enough to finally establish a handball league in the country, more of which will be discussed further down the line. But as always, the national team's objective remains the same as it has always been: win the bloody thing.

Hungry for Handball

Robson Juarez has been sacked; long live Gareth Martinez. Frankly, I would say that the handball department of the Commission on Games and Sport had no choice but to give Juarez his notice of termination of employment after he failed to get Abanhfleft into the semifinals of the 26th Handball World Cup. To be perfectly honest though, the guy was living on borrowed time ever since he failed to get the national team to fight for an actual prize in the 25th Handball World Cup. Forget about Abanhfleft’s recent failures in the Handball World Cup though; how the fuck was someone supposed to make sense of the convoluted formats that both HWCs 25 and 26 had? As far as I could remember, there seemed to be two group stages in both tournaments, and there was something relating to seeding which determined who went into the second group stage and who didn’t. It’s all so much to keep track of that I’m not surprised that both of those Handball World Cups aren’t really talked about here in Abanhfleft so much. Robson Juarez had managed to get himself a great deal of goodwill from the fans after taking us to two non-consecutive Handball World Cup finals, and even though he lost both of those games against Savojarna, he managed to convince all of us that he was a manager worth keeping around for over two decades. But now, after his failure in Bollonich, Robson’s time is over, and a new manager has come in to take his place.

But who is the man who replaces Robson Juarez? Who is Gareth Martinez, and what has he done to deserve the chance to take charge of the Abanhfleft national handball team? Well, before becoming head coach of the national team, Gareth Martinez was in charge of the Sebet Flying Fish, one of the twelve teams who founded the Abanhfleft Handball Association, our country’s first attempt at establishing a “national” handball league. The Sebet Flying Fish are one of the so-called “OG handball teams,” teams which had already been created and established before the AHA was even mooted. Gareth had played for the handball varsity team of the Boniface Lafontaine University before spending the entirety of his playing career with the Flying Fish. Injuries to his meniscus and MCL in his early thirties sidelined Gareth during the latter part of his career, and while he was in rehab during that time, he decided to begin studying how to become a coach. Gareth would eventually end up retiring from the sport at age 33, but just a few weeks after his retirement, he had been hired as an assistant coach by the Flying Fish. He remained in that position for five years before being elevated as the main man in time for the start of the inaugural Abanhfleft Handball Association (AHA) season. Gareth’s first season as head coach of the Flying Fish was unremarkable; his team took six wins from sixteen games and finished third in the Southern Conference of the AHA, behind the Immola Enforcers and the Oui Orbiters. Gareth and Sebet would have slightly better luck next season, winning half of all the games in their schedule, but it still wasn’t enough for them to make the playoffs.

Now I’m sure that some of you would find it surprising, weird even, that the handball department decided to go for a head coach who had never yet gotten above .500 in his first two years managing a handball team, and I will tell you all that we’re all in the same boat. I also found this decision questionable, although I won’t go as far as saying that it was a stupid appointment. In fact, I would even hazard to say that this was perhaps the best appointment that the department could have made in the circumstances. Most of the actual top coaches are tied down to long fat contracts with the current playoff contenders in the AHA, and considering that the Commission on Games and Sport barely has any money in its budget allocated to handball, it would have been nigh-impossible to lure away one of the truly top-tier coaches in the country from their current jobs. Gareth Martinez was probably the one guy who was both good enough and affordable enough to prevent the department from going over budget. I’m not going to knock them on that decision because I’m not sure if there is anyone else who would accept the job with all of the expectations that come with it. I know I wouldn’t take it even if they offered me a billion NS dollars!

Unfortunately for Gareth though, he hasn’t had the auspicious start to the Handball World Cup that he might have imagined getting when he decided to take the job. Abanhfleft went into their opening match against Melbergia as the clear favorites to win, but instead the Revolutionaries had to settle for a draw. No disrespect meant to Melbergia at all, but for a team with the high standards that Abanhfleft has, this just wouldn’t do at all! Add to that the fact that it appears that the Handball World Cup has finally gone back to a format that’s easier to understand (six groups of four teams each, top two in each group and I guess some of the best third place teams advance to the octofinals) and we now have even less chances of recovering after a slip-up like this. Gareth’s situation also isn’t helped by the fact that he just lost some very potent offensive players in the form of both Karly Cramer and JK Lorenzo, who both retired from international handball after the second group stage exit at HWC 26. Lamar Swanson is a capable replacement for JK, don’t get me wrong, but he’s not yet at the point in his career where he consistently puts up double digits in a single game. Yes, ten goals for his first game as a nailed-on starter is a lot, but come back to me when Lamar has scored at least ten goals for the rest of the World Cup. Again, I’m not trying to bash, just keeping my expectations on the down low as this is pretty much a transitional period for the national team. There’s still much work left to do here, friends. Don’t expect too much too early. I know I won’t.
