The Problem With Alcohol

Every year, 5% of deaths are attributed to alcohol. Alcohol can be a deadly substance that can have harmful affects to your brain, liver, and many other vital organs. Alcoholics and alcohol abusers are much more likely to get divorced, have problems with domestic violence, struggle with unemployment, and live in poverty.

So what do we do? Is it really much of a problem? Well, I'd say the 1 in 12 Americans who have an alcohol addiction would say yes. The nearly 400 people who die a day in the United States alone would say yes. The ten thousand people who died in drunk driving accidents would say yes.

So how do we stop it? We can't "live and let live" because all that does is live and let other people die. Can we ban it? We all know very well of the gang violence in the prohibition days, but it law enforcement advanced enough to put a stop to it? Or do we need larger law enforcement to crack down on alcohol abuse? Obviously, this isn't a matter of, "my friend only drinks once a week, it shouldn't be banned because she can moderate." No, we need to do something about it. But what?

Personally, I like the option of banning it and upping law enforcement. However, I'm not entirely sure. What do you think?

There's a lot of alcohol drinkers, and that will only up the amount of prisoners in a prison. That also highers a rate of a dangerous riot.

Honestly, yeah. I think it's time we ban the consumption of recreational alcohol like beer and wine. Maybe ban alcohol for everyone born after 2002 forever and be sent to jail for consumption

Honestly, yeah. I think it's time we ban the consumption of recreational alcohol like beer and wine.

that is NOT enough. we must ban more than that. we must ban the consumption of all alcohol including pure alcohol, alcohol in soap, etc. and i believe in setting up a massive surveillance state to enforce banning drinking on all alcohol, and we should also build a massive secret police structure to ensure compliance with alcohol bans

Prohibition in and of itself does not work and I do not think that it is practical to completely ban alcohol: there is a reason why cannabis is being legalized in many places nowadays, even if law enforcement can theoretically enforce such a ban, and that is because people will always find ways to get around any prohibition against making, selling, and consuming drugs. If alcohol is prohibited, we'd probably see a repeat of smugglers, speakeasies, and dangerous alcohol that was seen during prohibition.

That being said, I'd be in favor of dramatically lowering the BAC limit to 0.00 for all drivers, not least because the province where I live has one of the highest rates of drunk-driving in Canada, and I'd be in favor of a "one-strike" policy where if you get caught driving over the limit once, your driver's license gets taken away from you permanently.

Sure, be harsher for folk being morons and drinking while intoxicated, i'm all for safer roads after my friend got T-boned by a moron, but let us keep our booze in our homes and bars.

Except, corruption goes through the roof and other criminals are happy, because cops are too busy punishing the criminals, who dared to commit an offense most foul - to consime wine. Alright, even if cops are supercompetent and put every drinker and booze seller in prison... There are not enough prisons to host so many people. And if ya' somehow put them there... who's gonna man the factories and offices? It could end with "Half country is imprisoned and the other half guards them."

Such a ban could also lead to lots of riots.

Then what do you think the solution is? We can't just keep it the same as how it is. Maybe you have to scan your ID whenever you purchase alcohol and if you've scanned your ID too many times in a 20 hour time period, you can't buy more alcohol

I mean...probably? However, A) I've actually been a very good person and have slowly weaned myself away from unhealthy alcohol consumption, and B) I still find Alcohol as an enjoyable thing to drink.

However, if alcohol gets banned (or heavily restricted), I will start an illegal distillery because A) I love me a good drink, B) I love money, and C) who doesn't want to live in the bootleg (pardon the joke) roaring twenties?

Like, I think we can all agree we all secretly wanted to open a speakeasy before; if alcohol gets banned, a massive gap in the market opens and the enterprising (and possibly unsavoury) folk will simply fill that market. That's capitalism my guy, gotta love it.
