Port Hwanghu

Colonel Ka Jungmin watched through binoculars as the 9th Pyeon Regiment crossed the border into Port Hwanghu, a low sitting armored personnel carriers shielding the hundreds of infrantry as they move on the stolen port. At 27, Ka was on the younger end of the military leaders, a close ally of King Hojin who referred the military men of his own generation as opposed to the older men who he oft found to be hesitant and overly cautious in warfare. A sentiment Colonel Ka agreed with.

It had been an overcautious and underprepared stance by the regime of the deposed King Taejong that had led to the humiliating defeat of the nation at the hands of Marijani d’Aurelains. It had been that same cowardly stance that had seen them forced to handover the handful of fishing villages over to the Deritains, into what was today Port Hwanghu, which had grown over the years into a symbol of shame on the shores of Seoya.

No more, thought Colonel Ka. Today the foreigners would be thrown out, and Port Hwanghu razed to the grown, it’s colonial symbols destroyed and thrown back into the sea. Colonel Ka moved to a hill near one of the old fishing villages two miles northeast of the main port, known as Eohan. There he positioned the muscle of the regiment of over three thousand men fighting to restore the honor of Seoya. Their artillery.

Over two hundred and fifty 100 mm field guns, courtesy of the Patuanian arms manufacturers who where still willing to sell to Seoya despite the response dislike between their two leaders, were prepped, armed, and began to fire a massive scale bombardment down on Port Hwanghu.

The sound of explosions made Colonel Phumlani Ngubenani look up from his desk a second before the shockwave shattered the glass of his office. Ngubenani was thrown backwards and struck the back wall as alarms blared throughout Port Hwanghu. A young settlement established by its patron, the beloved Mother Empress, Hwanghu was an odd collection of Deritain and Seoyese architecture. Hugging the deep water port on its spot along the typically swampy Seoyese coastline, it was a place of constant construction and mixing between Deritain and Seoyese culture, for better or for worse. A rare fusion of the two vastly different culture had begun here.

And yet it seem all obliterated in an instant as the port went up in flames and curling smoke. The harbor was a small, still developing one, devoid of any military vessels aside from a pair of patrol boats, both of which were soon smothering as panic erupted along the waterfront. Screams fill the air as the Marjaem Hotel, which had once hosted the Celestial Emperor and the Queen of Imarati was blown to pieces.

Instead the Port Hwanghu Defense Headquarters, a large but young building on the northern end of the port, Colonel Ngubenani struggled to his feet. He was covered in cuts from shattered glass, but all injured appeared superficial as two more officers rushed into the office. The Seoyese had launched a surprise attack on the city. This shocked all in the room as they moved about, getting to cover. The Andejanes Archipelago was one of the most militarized corners of the empire by personnel, but it’s far away location on the edge of the frigid north and the quiet of the last few years had lead to a sense of it being a backwater.

Even if there was the thought of action, it was always thought that it would be a jumping off point for an assault on Patuania, not next door Seoya. Ngubenani made his way down the the base’s bunker, a sparse concrete room where the other officers had thrown up a map of the port and were currently securing radio communications with the troops in the city.

“They‘be launched a bombardment on the entire port,” said Lt. Asanda Ntlokwana. “At least 75 of our men are dead in the intital attack.”

“The local hospital is already over run with injured civilians and the entire waterfront is going up in flames,” said Lt. Governor Fundani Mgijima, the highest civilian authority in Port Hwanghu. Governor-General Mpilo Dandala remained on the archipelago’s largest island with the majority of the finding force. “The city is already cramped and haphazardly built. The locals have no respect for building codes. The fire department will need aid in putting them out.”

“The locals or the fires?” Quipped Ntlokwana.

“No,” said Ngubenani, ignoring the condescending tone so famously associated with the Empire. “We over have a little over two thousand men here in the city. Even getting reinforcements from Governor-General Dandala would take time. And the Seoyese had surprise on their side, geographically advantage and I’m willing to bet numerical as well. We need each one of those men to Defense this city.”

“Bloody ambush,” muttered Mgijima.

“Base on the landing pattern,” said Ntlokwana, “They are coming in from the north, near Eohan hill. We could launch a counter attack, a push from the south to draw their fire and a flanking maneuver from the southeast.”

“No,” asserted Ngubenani. “Both put us at a greater disadvantage, and routes up hill. Even if we get close enough to step into their range of fire, the entire route before that is going to be a blood bath. We need them all to the hill. Pull them into the city, where their numbers and guns won’t help them.”

Ngubenani grabbed the map and began making marks. “We only have 75 light artillery guns. Here’s what we do. We pull back to the south end, and left the fires burn east inland, evacuate the civilians to our back and use the smoke as a literal smoke screen. When the Seoyese see us retreating, they’ll come down from their hill in pursuit. That’s when we come in for the kill.”

With the colonel’s orders issued, across the northern part of the city soldiers began falling back , guarding their rears as they headed south where police were directing civilians behind safety checkpoints and hastily erected barricades. At the assistance of Colonel Ngubenani, Lt. Governor Mgijima was amongst them while a hundred or so secured the PHDHQ building. Army Engineers meanwhile began aiding the control spread of the fire into a wall that cut the city in half.

A telegram was sent Governor-General Dandala informing him that the Celestial Empire was under attack.

Colonel Ka watched with no small amount of pleasure as he saw the fires in the city grow, seemingly wild and across the colonial outpost. Good, he thought. He had been truthful in his wish to raze the port to the ground and it seemed that he was getting his wish. Even better, the Deritains, it was reported, were falling back. Some of the Seoyese soldiers at the frontline had begun exchanging fire with smaller grounds of the enemy forces as they fell back. The result had been a dozen or so dead, but Colonel Ka shrugged off the thought. They'd died for the liberation of the Fatherland of Seoya.

Colonel Ka ordered his forces forward. They would seize control of the entirety of the port, and they would give the Deritains any quarter. Ka had not come here to take prisoners after all. He ordered a team of armed transports and personnel to head to the water front to launch an assault on the enemy operations headquarters via the western coastal edge while the main line forces pushed into the city to take it to block by block and flush out any colonialist or sympathizers. Meanwhile, from their position on Eohan hill, the artillery guns began incrementally increasing the degree of angle, firing eight rounds a minute.

From the southern end of the Port, the few light artillery of the regiment of the Celestial Empire began launching their own volleys of fire, which screamed through the air and through the smoke into the evacuated sections of the northern part of the city. Climbing up to the roof tops of secured and thus far undamaged buildings they positioned themselves lowly as they fired the light guns.

From the headquarters of the defense forces, Ngubenani ordered his men to hold their fire as they took their positions in the windows of the building, watching the steady approach of the Seoyese soldiers. They waited till they were right up against the property of the building to fire down from their superior positions.

Colonel Ka watched as several of their comrades hit the ground as bullets whizzed through the air, striking the first of the Seoyes on their approach. The unit commander called for them too take cover behind their armored transports, which they arranged in a semi-circle around the north wall of the enemy headquarters. At his command, the men returned fire to their attackers above while one team of the soldiers pulled out grenades and launched them into the ground floor of the building, ready to launch a more forward into the structure itself.

Elsewhere in the northern section of the city the Seoyese found themselves under a new round of enemy bombardment and radioed back to Colonel Ka. Further they couldn't advance any further as the flames grew hotter and blazed through the narrow and cramped streets of the city. With the danger of the fires, they were forced to abandon the search on through each block, instead falling back and launching grenades into the houses strategically to bring them down in order to prevent the flames from creeping north into their positions. Ka however began to realize the danger of the flames in determining the position of enemy forces.

Colonel Ka was not deterred by this, however. Unable to strategically fire upon them, he instead ordered a carpet bombardment maneuver to destroy anything and everything in their path.

Colonel Ngubenani felt the building shake above him and his officers as holes were blown into the northern wall of the headquarters building, causing a partial collapse of the second floor above it. The soldiers who had been trading fire with the Seoyese soldiers on the ground fell silent, either killed in the blast, injured or forced to retreat through the halls taking defensive positions as they waited for the Seoyese to come into the building. Inside the bunker, Colonel Ngubenani pulled out his own sidearm. The other officers in the bunker with him began to do the same, ready to defend themselves to the last.

This sentiment was not held as rigorously by Lt. Governor Mgijima as he and the other civilians watched in horror as the entirety of Port Hwanghu seemed to be turned into a flaming hellscape before their eyes. Panic was spreading, as Deritain colonials, the wealthiest of the citizens in the port, hastily wrapping themselves in warm clothing for as night fell, those areas not engulf in flames turned bitterly cold, were in stun horror at the very idea of war reading their doorsteps. Meanwhile, many of the ethnically Seoyese citizens of city feared the approaching forces, as many of them had moved to Port Hwanghu precisely to flee the authoritarian government of Hojin.

This mix of confusion and fear, pushed Lt. Governor Mgijima to consider a way to escape the city. With the port in shambles, however, escaping by sea would be difficult. Nonetheless, he thought it better to run than to die, as it was better to live to fight another day. He, handing over his fine watch and clothes, swabbed his attire with that of one of the poorer citizens, pulling on a wide straw hat and slipping out from the gathered security zones, making his way out of the city limits and into the marshy wetlands of the coast. Seeing this, others began to trickle away.

This only caused the moral of the soldiers in the southern end of the city to shake more and more as their positions were struck seemingly randomly as the city was being reduced to rumble around the, forcing further and further retreat south as they lost more and more of their artillery guns.

With the walls breached in the enemy headquarters building, Colonel Ka ordered a full-scale assault on the building, sending his men into the building, filling the corridors with gunfire, and firing even on the injured. When Colonel Ka had said no prisoners, he had meant no prisoners. They moved upward moving floor by floor, suspecting the head of the officers to be located on the highest floors of the building. The fighting here was fierce as the close quarters of the space didn't favor the Seoyese's higher numbers.

With the sun disappearing beneath the sky, which turned black with the heavy smoke from the ruined city, however, with the flames tearing through the city so fiercely, it was starting to die out in sections, having exhausted the first of its fuels, especially near the waterfront, it created a series of openings. It was through these openings that Colonel Ka ordered his men to rush through, throwing them at the remaining positions of the Deritain defenders, heavy machine guns mounted on their armored vehicles ripping through the streets as they stormed the rumble shrewd streets.

As the Seoyese and Imperial forces clashed in full force amidst the dark and wreckage of the Port of Hwanghu, the death toll skyrockets as hundreds began to fall, while the few who remained, separated from their leaders, felt their moral and their strength break as less than a thousand, all that remained from the battle began retreating, shattering or surrendering to the Seoyese forces, with the former two rushing south into the wetlands while the latter threw down their weapons and took up makeshift white flags.

There was meanwhile a sense of confusion in the bunker of the defense headquarters, Ngubenani and Ntlokwana both prepared to fire on the enemy the moment they attempted to enter the bunker. Only the moment never came. Instead, from what they could hear, the Seoyese moved in the opposite direction, where they would find the half-destroyed offices of the officers.

It was in the early hours of the morning that the last of the fighting died down as Colonel Ka ordered the gathered surrendered Deritains up onto Eohan Hill. The port, the symbol of the colonial expansion of the Celestial Empire, the land stolen from Ka and his people by their conquering dragon of a woman that had dared to give it her own name, lay in ruins, a smoking field of rubble flames and bodies.

It was over this scene that Colonel Ka smiled. Victory was his. Vengeance had been taken. The honor of restored. Or rather, almost so. He looked over the several hundred men, Imperial Soldiers who had been forced into submission, a position he imagined was a rarity in that regard. To have them as his prisoners he suspected made him a rarity in history. But he had not come to take prisoners.

On the orders of Ka Jungmin, everyone left in Port Hwanghu, was rounded up and executed, throwing the bodies into mass graves whilst the ruins of the city were looted and sent back to the capital. All the while the Seoyese Air Force continued to the archipelago to destroy the forces there, as an amphibious force moved to secure them beyond the waves.

The Gaosa Gazette

Massacre at Eohan Hill!

3 February 2138
Gaosa, the Celestial Empire

Horror from the North!

Thousands are dead after the unprecedented and unprovoked attack on Port Hwanghu by Seoyese Forces last night! Late in the evening of the previous day, thousands of Seoyese swarmed the Hwanghuer-Seoyese border as a deadly bombardment was rained down upon the city, setting the hodgepodge port ablaze in a form that endangered the lives of the thousands of civilians in the city. As the Seoyese moved into the streets, intense urban fighting broke out between Imperial and the savage forces. The result was a series of bloody sorties that left an estimated near two thousand dead on both sides, though with the Imperial government’s forces heavily out numbered, loosing 69% of their combatants and the Seoyese only 40%. The bloody attack has left those in the Empire stunned and horrified. Lt. Governor Mgijima, who was in the city at the time is reportedly missing while many other high ranking officials are presumed dead. A response is underway from the offices of the Inama

Oryade Island, Andejanes Archipelago

Brigadier General Chi Tae-Young lead the landing himself onto the northern and smaller of the islands of the Archipelago. Where others might have stayed behind on the mainland to direct the forces from the relative safety of there, General Chi had no interest in being taken for a coward. It had become increasingly clear, especially after Colonel Kay’s victory at Port Hwanghu that only vicious action would be accepted by the King.

Chi, at 45 was of a more typical age of a man of his rank, but his many years of experience did him no favors. Instead it made King Hojin suspicious of him. And those the king was suspicious of oft found themselves in graves or as emasculated exiles. Eager to avoid this, Chi chosen the most aggressive possible attack, launching an amphibious assault on the island of Oryade, the nearest to the mainland.

Leading an invasion force of over 6,000 soldiers, with moral high from the recent victory at Hwanghu and with the fear of failure, General Chi and his Pyeongeon Regiment were eager as their transports landed. From above, bombers lay waste to the island, dropping their payloads in an indiscriminately hostile manner.

Colonel Gugulethu Kolisi had been just as surprised by the assault on Oryade Island as Colonel Ngubenani had been in Port Hwanghu. One of the vital islands of the Andejanes Archipelago that guarded the gates to the north and the Borean Sea, Oryade had been far more guarded than Port Hwanghu had been.

Still, like Port Hwanghu the regiment on Oryade was small in comparison to their attackers, only a little over two thousand men. But where Port Hwanghu had been hemmed in on all sides by sea and Seoya, a land that was, admittedly taken from them, Oryade, a cold and rocky island was one that had been settled by Deritains, and the sense of defense was a far greater one. More so, the militarized nature of the island meant there were few civilians.

Anti-aircraft guns lit up the sky as they fired on the enemy bombers, while soldiers in trucks avoidance smoking crackers blasted into the already hard and unforgiving landscape towards the pebble beaches. They took their positions on the high rock outcroppings that dotted the island, opening fire on the enemy as they climbed ashore.

Blood soaked the gray peddle stone beaches of Oryade as hundreds of Seoyese men fell under the heavy enemy fire of the Imperials, the resistance far stronger they had anticipated. Weighed down by their army gear, guns, and forces to land in the shallows of the freezing waters of the strait before running up the craggily shore was slowing General Chi’s forces and bottling them up on the shore lines.

Twice a bullet whizzed past General Chi’s own head. He ordered the gun me on the transport to attempt to draw the fire of the nests of the Deritains. Despite the growing umber of bodies on the beach however, General Chi sent in the next wave of his soldiers into the bloody melee. He would not surrender, nor retreat. If they killed every Seoyese soldier for every Inperial one after all, he would still have a greater force.

Resolved, General Chi prepared to throw his men into the meat grinder, suspecting the great amount of blood would eventually break it.

Colonel Kolisi, hearing of the bloodbath unfolding on the beaches began preparing a planned withdrawal manuever from the south side of the island. While it seemed that their defensive positions were inflicting higher death rates on the Seoyese, the endless hours of fighting and the loss of his own men’s lives was a position that was untenable. Outnumbered and under regular shift rotation, as the battle dragged out, they were slowly, but to Kolisi’ alarm loosing ground. And yet the Seoyese seem to throw wave after wave at them, to the point where Kolisi feared they would soon run out of ammunition.

This his plan for a controlled withdrawal from the island to the main island to regroup with Governor-General Dandala. From there they would be able to regroup once reinforcements from the south arrived. While the Inama had been horrified by the attack on Port Hwanghu, a mix of confidence in Dandala and his officers, and sheer logistical difficulty had slowed reinforcements. A navy defense force had been dispatched, but it had left from Aukusa City, meaning even at its top speeds it would still be another three days before they arrived.

Kolisi, weighing his options thought it better to depart Oryade for the main land and receive reinforcements and launch a counter on the island than sacrifice his men for a position that could not be held in the short term. The move was unpopular amongst his subordinates, as many wished to stay and fight, but Kolisi set aside his on feelings and took the most logical long term decision.

With his order, the Celestial Empire began evacuating Oryade Island, the rear vanguard maintaining fire as they backstepped across the island, destroying any and all military installations and housing facilities. In the cold of winter, they would make sure that even abandoned, the island of Oryade gave them no quarter.

General Chi surveyed the wreckage on Oryade as the skies above the cratered island grew dark and thick with storm clouds. The battle of Oryade had been a decisive but pyrrhic victory for the brigadier general. He had ha his aides survey the dead littered across the island, particularly on the northern pebble beaches that had seen the first and fiercest of the fight over the week long battle. The results were grim. For every two Imperial soldier they'd cut down, three Seoyese men had fallen as well. Of that, over half of them had died but a mere few feet from the waves. 1,350 Seoyese were dead, and hundreds of more injured. A third of his forces had been wiped out.

And yet, Oryade was his. Chi had succeeded in taking the island. He had paid the price in blood, but for his own life, for the sake of being able to inform King Hojin on his victory, however costly, it was well worth it.

Then the snow started to fall. And the wind began to howl. The sky, which had held off all throughout the grueling battle now opened the flood gates, releasing heavy snow and freezing rain down not on Oryade Island, but across the archipelago and Northern Seoya. The winter storm was brutal and the temperatures rapidly dropped. This would prove a problem for General Chi. For while his counterparts, such as Colonel Ka and Brigiader General Sonu Kwonjae, who was preparing for the next stage of the campaign was sheltered safely on the mainland, General Chi and his men were forced to make camp on the blasted ruins of Oryade as the sea around them boiled and turned dangerous to all ships.

Western Ocean, 200 miles southwest of the Seoyese Coast

Rear Admiral Fezekile Dyani directed the 4th Celestial Destroyer Division, comprised of four destroyers northward as they made their move to resupply the military garrison on the main land of the Andejanes Archipelago. They had set out from Aukusa Bay, hastily put together with a supply ship of arms, ammo, medical and food supplies. There had been much debate in Gaosa over how large of a force to send. Having directed the 2nd Fleet off the Lajaz Coast, it was fear that sending the whole of the 1st Fleet, the largest of the three the Celestial Empire maintained, (one for the west, south and east) would be unwise and open them up to further dangers.

Geography was not proving not to be the friend of the Celestial Empire in the conflict thus far. Despite sharing a border with Seoya hundreds of miles long, its territories that were being attack were a thousand or so miles north of there that supply lines under normal circumstances would have been difficult. Now, it was proving disasterous. Seoya dominated the narrow strait that lead up to the Andejanes. Attempting to enter them would be dangerous, since the armed escort. Still, it was hoped by those in Gaosa that if Governor-General Dandala could be properly supplied and retake Oryade and Port Hwanghu, then they could forced a peace on the side of diplomacy.

Vice Admiral Pyo Jungsoo ordered the guns of the Sae prepped as the destroyer raced south to intercept the approaching Deritain destroyer division their long range radars had spotted sailing north. Having left from the newest naval base of Saeloun Namjjog Fort in the small port city of Gumungju, the Sae and its sister ship the Jeonjin had sailed at full speed the six hours from Gumungju to intercept the escort group.

Vice Admiral Pyo waited till they were just in range of the Sae’s new anti-ship missile launch system, a liquid fuel rocket with high explosives with a range of forty miles. There was a bright flash and high pitch scream as the Sae fired the cruise missiles, they had a total of 12 and of them six fired, which blazed through the night in a grim and deadly arch through the sky towards the Deritain supply ship.

The guns of Rear Admiral Dyani’s ships erupted, the bright burning streaks of light burning through the dark as they fired high at the suddenly incoming missiles. The night sky was suddenly filled with light as one of the round met their mark and the enemy missile erupted in a fiery explosion. Alarms across the division went off as the destroyers began evasive maneuvers, their wakes turning pure white as one of the missiles clipped past the bow of Rear Admiral Dyani’s ship.

Another in the sea without striking any of the ships, while a fourth was gunned down by one of the other destroyers. Then the supply ship exploded.

The entire ship went up I a bright red and black ball of fire in a swift one two punch as the missiles collided with it. There was a great roar of metal ripping apart as the ship was lifted up out of the water before crashing back down, snapping in half. The main mast, as most non-military ships across the continent continued to be under the power of sail since the Great Colkapse, fell into the sea wrapped in flames.

The situation quickly turned dire as the crew aboard the supply ship were thrown or forced to jump into the sea to avoid the rapidly sinking ship. Rear Admiral Dyani order her ship to began conducting emergency rescue operations, deploying inflatable motorboats from the port ship of her ship too. Flood and search lights were cast in the dark waters. Meanwhile, not forgetting the clear danger of their situation, Rear Admiral Dyani ordered three of the other three destroyers to give chase to the enemy.

The first amongst these, under Captain Akhona Siganeko‘a order, fired their twin anti-ship missiles from their bow position. The two rockets shot up in a low arch to cover its twenty mile range towards its targets.

The Jeonjin rocked as its starboard side erupted in an explosion that torn along its length of the superstructure, sending the entire vessel listing to the port side, sending crew sliding to the side in a dangerous series of collisions. Smoke bellowed out from r the series of gruesome gashes through the upper decks of the ship.

Vice Admiral Pyo, satisfied with their strike on the Deritain vessel being escorted, and seeing this quite literally as a hit and run, ordered a hasty retreat back to Gumungju, the Sae racing back north while the Jeonjin, groaning and listing limped after the faster destroyer.

In the waves, the rescue teams were still pulling men out of the water as Rear Admiral Dyani ordered their team to turn back eastward back into Deritain waters, making for the port of Kujum. Despite her division’s superior numbers, Dyani could not help but note the superior range of thf Seoyese cruise missiles or the greater speed of their ships. It would be a dangerous game attempting to chase them down, and in the narrows of the straight that danger and any further awaiting ambushes would increase. Further more, with the supply vessel destroyed, Rear Admiral’s mission was hastily aborted.

Brigadier General Hernandez Venez looked out over the Deritian countryside, as the single engine aircraft carried itself slowly over the land. The former rebel general and field marshal had been given an option when the Legion was formed, spend most of his remaining life in prison, or exile, or serve as the commanding officer in the newly formed Verocusan Foreign Legion. The ongoing war between the Celestial Empire and Seoya, It had been deterimined that the conflict was the perfect opportunity for the Foreign Legion not only to gain much experience, but to prove itself in the eyes of the rest of the world.

Two thousand Legion soldiers were on their way via sea, and if negotiations went well, another eight hundred would be quickly moved by land as well, however, for now, the Celestial Empire would have to work with its own resources, and the General had made the decision to make the trip to the Celestial Empire independently, and ahead of his own forces, to offer what advisory services that he could for the Imperial Army.

He put on the distinct white cap of the Verocusan Foreign Legion, which contrasted the drab, beige uniform that was the standard dress uniform for the VFL, meant to set it distinctly apart from the standard Verocusan Duchal Guard, and as the aircraft landed stoop up. The small, over wing aircraft rolled to a stop, and taxid to a parking positon , and the General opened the passenger door of the aircraft, and stepped out, ready to begin his work once again.
