A Brief History of Sport in Benjium
Benjians have played a variety of what might be considered footsports throughout their history, though these have often be largely regionalized (with the notable exception of cat herding) and never fully organized into a professional capacity until extremely recently. The introduction of the sport of Baseball some 40 years ago was a major catalyst in changing this, as many athletic clubs and other amateur teams began sponsoring local cups, municipal leagues and competitions. The Baseball Association of Benjium (BAB) was formed approximately 20 years ago as an organizational institution, sponsored in part by the federal and many local governments, and in part by philanthropy to encourage competitions on a national level, with the Tournament of the Valley becoming a defacto National Championship. Professionalism remained technically illegal, and teams were for the most part, composed entirely of locals. However, in hopes of sending a competitive team to the World Baseball Classic, and a challenge in the Benjium High Courts has disrupted this old system. Just this year BAB was granted the authority to oversee the establishment of league of professionals. Many of the top amateur clubs have begun amassing teams, and a number of corporations have purchased rights to others. While a majority of the top amateur players have signed lucrative deals, a significant minority has voiced opposition to this breaking of tradition. While baseball remains the most popular sport nationally - and currently the only professional one - many regions prefer their own or other games, and recent trends are expected to spread to other popular games throughout the country.

Benjium National Teams

Currently the only team Benjium officially sponsors is their Baseball Team, which made their WBC debut in the 56th edition of the tournament. They have given an association status to a national ball program which participated in IBC 37.

In addition to the two national teams, Benjium's Ministry of Culture and Sport has given support to professional club The Luxio Wolves entrance into the International Baseball Slam 19, Floatilla Academy's foray into the NS College Hockey Tournament, and sponsored the participation of 3 athletes in the Nation States Tennis Tour.

Baseball Association of Benjium

After over 40 years of amateur baseball being played throughout the Benjium State, the Baseball Association of Benjium organized a league of 39 clubs into a three tier promotion and relegation system. The initial drawings for leagues were based on where formerly amateur clubs finished in the last fully amateur Valley Baseball Cup and to a lesser degree, anticipated spending abilities. Critics of the new system state that some corporations were able to purchase lower level teams at a great discount and that the basing of where teams qualified through a knockout tournament caused some high quality to start in the second tier. The Association claims that within a few years, the promotion and relegation of three teams should balance the competition well. The BAB will also continue to sponsor the Valley Baseball cup, in which many excellent fully amateur squads - many of whom opposed the professionalization of the sport will participate. Teams play a 120 game season, with home-and-home series of five games against every other team over 12 weeks.


Championship - Teams in the championship are required stadiums of at least 15,000 capacity. They share 70% of revenue from the national media contracts in addition to enjoying a significant prize pool for a top five finish.

2nd League - Teams in the second division are required to have a stadium with a capacity of 5,000 (though some exceptions have been made). It should come as little surprise that the Wolves are early favorites to win the first BAB Championship league title (and no I didn't get a raise for saying so). After the allowance of private and corporate ownership and professional players, one of the largest media companies in the Commonwealth, Media Luxio, purchased the team. It was well known that many high up executives, including the CEO Isabela Invictus were followers of the Wolves in the amateur days. A successful club then, the massive influx of cash and brought a new stadium and major veteran stars, including three Valley tournament winner Roberto Saldana to headline the rotation, and last year's Valley Cup MVP Josepi Samiria.

Home of the Valley Cup, the people and players Maine Coon Valley were perhaps the most opposed to the professionalization of the game in Benjium. Its primary team reflects this, as rather than an owner, the team is entirely owned by the players and a number of fans. Granted the privilege to use the Valley Cup Park as their home stadium, the old wooden bleachers will likely be swaying and swinging as fans chant for the likes of hometown heroes Vini Imbrex, Virgil Cauis, and player-manager Oppi Belisar. A combination of youngsters with strong political opinions and oldtimers opposed to the breaking of tradition, the Co-Op may just have what it takes to challenge for the title.

East Minorin Bats
Home Field - Sears Stadium (24,258 capacity, Grass, Partially Roofed, 315 left, 404 center, 322 right) Vesperti, Benjium MINORIN

East Minorin has always held a unique position within Benjium, as result of its population almost evenly split on whether to leave for the Independent Federal Republic of West Minorin. As a result, many of its players are locals, with the state almost patriotically sponsoring the Bats as the primary club. Hina Mori once held the record for the most steals in a single Valley Cup, and while showing her age, is certainly a valuable clubhouse leader. The team as a whole lacks power, but their chemistry and knack for small ball should have them as a top team, if only their relatively young bullpen can hold.

Home Field - Duke Financial Ballpark (17,292 capacity, Grass, 340 left, 428 left-center, 400 center, 340 right) Saxum, Benjium

The Suns are bolstered by arguably the best 1 - 2 punch of starting pitching with Quintus Pompei and Papi Triana, if the later can stay healthy. The young Luigi Bianchi at the end of the rotation promises to have a bright future as well. Their offense is sizeable question mark, with reliance on some players in their twilight and some just at their dawn. Zia BC had always been considered a dark horse squad in the Valley Cup, with their 3rd place finish in the 3rd year of the event becoming a pinnacle they could never quite reach again. "The Suns always rise again" being their supporters' slogan, an small influx of cash for the naming rights to their stadium in Saxum has the team competitive. More money and stadium expansion is promised if the Suns can secure one of the top five spots in the league.

Crux Magnus is nearly in the Center of the Orange Cat Mountains, and is home to Bureau for National Transit. Railroader's Athletic Club was started long before baseball became common, as a recovery, rehabilitation and leisure resort for the workers of the nation's rail networks. Decades later, they run near charitable centers offering affordable gymnasiums with strong ties to the Rail Worker's Union and the BNT. Their team is built on defense and speed, with a rotation and bullpen that rely on inducing ground balls and soft contact. Their bats are the weakest of our top 5 predictions, but don't sleep on a this train, their talent is built for the future with two teenagers including 18 year old reliever Marcus Arator and Infielder Vibius Isotu.

Ball Club of the Mountains (Aka "The Grays")
Home Field - Whitewater Diamond (16,321 capacity, Grass, 347 left, 415 center, 350 right)

In the early days, the Ball Club of the Mountains was essentially a travel team, as the long trek into the thick of the Orange Cat Mountains wasn't something many clubs were up for. Owner/Manager Kori Pagliachi has assembled a power based team for the the small Whitewater Diamond, over a mile above sea level. Right Fielder Giovani Elios headlines a power based lineup which could sneak into the top 5.

Luxio Bulls BC
Home Field - Rubristratum Co. Park (26,417 capacity, Turf, 347 left, 396 Center, 355 right)

Located in the southwester suburbs of Luxio, it may sound biased, but the Bulls seem to be trying to build a budget version of what the Wolves are doing. Their team consists a lot of what many consider second tier stars, largely because their much older including Pitching Ace Pulvi Kuri who once took the old club Fighters BC to semi's of the Valley Cup nearly 20 years ago. With an average age of 31, can the Bulls use their veteran talent to make some noise?

The Pretenders
City of Charlotta BC
Home Field - Greenway Industries Stadium (20,169 capacity, Grass (Partially Closed) 330 left, 402 center, 298 right)

Charlotta has been booming in population due to the influx of uranium and aluminum mining in the area. Greenway Industries owner Viki Venichi has helped bring a new, large stadium to the area after purchasing the club. However, the on the field product may not be able to match. There are some stars for sure in Center Field Julia Araya and Third Base Quintus Gorgelus, but the depth just seems lacking here.

Velitrae BC
Home Field - Velitrae City Field (20,974 capacity, Turf (Dome) 328 left, 400 center, 328 right)

Velitrae BC was one of the clubs which was at the crux of the issue for professionalization. The municipal government both sponsored the club, and subsidized the creation of a domed stadium a decade ago. It was argued that if a city government could pump money in such a way to a club, that players should get a piece, and that other entities should have the same rights. The city managed to keep much of the Velitrae talent after the professionalization, but will that be enough? Its doubtful considering they were bounced in the round of 16 in the last two Valley Cups.

Fighting to Stay Up
Silvia Park Beavers
Home Field - Silvia Park (19,609 capacity, Grass, 302 left, 420 Center, 315 right)

The Beavers remain almost unchanged from the amatuer days. A club named for a massive nature preserve in the Maine Coon Valley suburb of Ferrugo Hills, the Beavers will rely heavily on the talents of their rotation headlined by Figia Nautali. Their finances are questionable, as the club has not received much backing from outside their supporter group. They do have a crop of young talent which may either keep them up, or maybe help ease their money problems, but they'll be challenged to maintain Championship status.

Mountport Blues
Home Field - SeaCat Park (16,819 capacity, Grass, 330 left, 400 center, 330 right)

The oldest club in the south of Benjium, the Blues were one of the last teams announced by the BAB to make the Chamionship's inaugural run. It will be a struggle for them to stay up, as promised financial backings from the ownership group seem to have been delayed, along with hopes for a new bayside park. The Power and Speed threat, Mika Nahai will start the season injured as well, and is rumored to be holding out for a season before taking his talents elsewhere.

Metro BC
Home Field - None, will play at Rubristratum Co. Park and SeaCat Park

Perhaps the most controversial pick to play in the Championship, if not the BAB at all.The Metro BC was purchased right at the decesion deadline by West Minorin national Tekachi Wogobi. They have announced plans to leave Luxio to compete in Vesperti, but will play this final season renting between the ballparks of The Bulls and the Wolves. If not Metro BC, the Cheesers are certainly the most controversial squad and the reason why many were opposed to the professionalization of the sport. After purchasing the historic BC Red Rose, the Crepitum Dairy Company proceeded to sell the rights to most star players just days after securing their spot in the Championship. Many accuse Crepitum using the team as nothing more than a walking ad campaign and some young players straight refused to sign. If there is one player worth mentioning, keep an eye on 2B Dominius Melehia.

13 Weeks in the bag and all teams have completed 60 games. Mina Hustus and Jacobi Nox sit down and hash out what we've seen and what we can expect to come.

Jacobi: Mina, wow its certainly been a wild first season. Can't say that we're too surprised about the team on top, but just about the rest of the league standings have been quite the shakeup! So, let's sit down, let's go through the table, and then at the end perhaps a quick word about who may be coming up from the second league this year?

Mina: Certainly Jacobi. You know, If you're rooting for the Wolves, then your certainly happy with where you're at, still yet to lose 20 games, a run difference of plus eighty? Saldana and Solana are certainly earning their salaries, but I think we need to give props to the young Andrei Publicus!

Jacobi: Publicus has been great, 11 starts, 9 wins, an ERA of 2.42 and a K/9 of 12.6, he's been a real bright spot for them for sure, and many years left, he could be the first long-term superstar in the BAB Championship.

Mina: Well that's the hope for a lot of the folks of Luxio at least, but you know Jacobi, it's the one blemish of the year for him that's sitting in second, The Bats aren't too far behind! Five games back with sixty to play, they're certainly within striking distance, You'd picked the East Minorin side to finish third, well they're just exceeding expectations, a game up on 3rd and two games up on the three teams tied for 4th-6th.

Jacobi: Yeah, and its been those Bats' bats that have been doing the damage, 3rd best in the league in runs scored, Hina Mori isn't showing her age at all, 34 and tied for third in steals right now, bold prediction here Mina, I think she slips into first before season's end.

Mina: A spry 34 years young out there in Center, and another 34 year old has really stepped up for them, Pablo Herennius has really stepped up into the closer role, Lucia Lubia had struggled early on. Lubia seems to have settled into that setup role, but Herennius has only blown the one save this year, you love to see it.

Jacobi: Of course, and we can't talk about stepping up without mentioning The Grays. The Ball Club out in the Mountains, have slipped into third! Mr. Giovaini Elios, as a hinted at Mina, he's been lights out for the Grays, second in home runs and leads the league in slugging percentage. Do you think he could take home the Batter of the Year title?

Mina: He's definitely up there Jacobi, I think Josepi Samiria of the Wolves, and maybe Maximus Sulus of the Beavers will have something to say, and one dark horse I want to mention is Infanso Amico despite the tough season the Railroaders have had to this point, he's basically a one man offense. But no, The Grays offense has been extremely impressive. If their rotation can figure a few things out, I think they'll really have a shot, but that's going to be a tough hill - or maybe a mountain - to climb.

Jacobi: A run difference of -4 for the Grays but maybe they can sneak it out! Okay, there's currently a three way tie for 4th place. Looking at them in order of run difference, we can start with the Zia Suns!

Mina: You know they have a very dear place in my heart Jacobi! I was a 15 year old kit when they won that Valley Cup, and I can still remember how cool they looked in those gold and blues. Quintus Pompei has been magnificent but how great is it to see Tutus Acherusia and Mae Secundi still out there, still competing? And the fact that they stole the Old West Saxum veteran Papi Triana from the old city rivalry days just sweetens the deal for me.

Jacobi: But its not just the older cats, Cordales Yirka has provided a defensive sparkplug, I think they may be the best shortstop - at least defensively - in the championship right now. and of course Vole Duili - he's struggled a little with injury - but he' providing some very quality time for Zia.

Mina: Its certainly looking like a bright horizon! I know I'm being a bit of a homer - I don't think they catch the Wolves Jacobi - but I think they have a real good chance of slipping into second place, that would give them Super-Regional rights for the Valley Cup too.

Jacobi: For those that don't know, or who haven't heard, the BAB did announce that the first and second place finishers in the regular season will be the hosts for the rounds of 64 through 32 with the round of 16 being in the historic home at Valley Park of course. So the Suns are looking good! So are the Bulls! There were some memes going around at the beginning of the season of a half empty Rubristratum Co. Park, but they've really come around - sitting there tied for fourth.

Mina: Jacobi, its another great veteran group, its guys who were looking to keep playing after they thought their old clubs might go with younger talent, Pulvi Kuri has been great, old man Charlus Ludolo has a 22 game hit streak still intact. That series they had against the Wolves? Packed house and a rowdy stadium every game at Rubristratum, I think the sold out 4 of the 5 games even if they only won 2/5. I think they're for real, but I do wonder if the longer season starts to impact their ability to stay healthy? Perhaps that's a little biased of me though.

Jacobi: I think it's a valid point, but I think this will impact all the teams fairly equally. The old Circuit system played about half the games as the League system, so its got to be a tax to get used to. I'm sure the paycheck makes it a little easier. Perhaps we should be paying attention to what teams are hiring recovery and condition staffs?

Mina: Haha, for sure! That brings us to our seconds big positive surprise on the year! We already mentioned Maxiumus Sulus, he's got 19 home runs he's batting .332, and he's led the Beavers to tied for fourth here in the early goings. Silvia Park has been clutch!

Jacobi: You have to be clutch when you're run difference is -29 but you're still 8 games above .500.

Mina: Okay, that's fair, but the Beavers have been the heartattack heroes for sure. Outside of Sulus, there isn't anyone who leaps out at you as a star though. Its a squad that just plays solid ball and has an intangible knack for finding a way to win. I feel like if this was happening in the Valley Cup they'd be the underdog darlings for sure. Do you think they keep it up?

Jacobi: I'm skeptical. They're very much built like a Valley Cup squad, but I'm worried they're going to really struggle to continue to eek out these close games the later the season goes. But obviously our next team is the exact opposite scenario...

Mina: You seem to want to avoid this talk? You're not talking about the team you picked to finish second and really challenge the Wolves are you?

Jacobi: Haha, hey now, we're only halfway though! But no it's been tough for the MCV Co-Op, they're scoring the runs for sure, 343 is the most in the league, but it hasn't converted to wins. They're sitting 7th right now, and that just doesn't feel right for what the BAB thought was going to be one of their gem clubs. They've had a few injuries here and there, Inosto Tentus missed time, Leanna Brooklyn is dealing with a knee issue, but really they just haven't performed defensively or on the bullpen nearly as well as they thought they would.

Mina: Oppi Belisar is a smart cat, I think its very big of him to start the young Aenac Bucco when their facing a southpaw, I think they'll figure some things out, they're only 3 games out of the top five.

Jacobi: I agree, but I'd say 5th place is a disappointment for the Co-Op.

Mina: So that's bringing us to the 8th place Rail Roaders then, and our first squad that is sub .500. Jacobi I think your pre-season warning for these guys was spot on, they just lack offense! 238 runs is the worst in the Championship.

Jacobi: Lack offense, outside home run leader Infanso Amico as you said earlier Mina. And they lack the ability to get outs when they really need to it seems. They're a great team on defense, after all 240 runs allowed is second best in the league, but none of their rotation is even in the top ten for strikeouts. The bullpen hasn't been lights out either. It seems like you can stop a train after all?

Mina: So long as the wheels fall off! I think they'll stay up though.

Jacobi: I think they will too, which leads right into our next team, the Cheesers! Now I picked the Cheesers last, I wrote them off like a lot of people did. I think Dominius Melehia may win the defensive player of the year for second base, I think it's safe to say that they have over-performed thus far - is that fair Mina?

Mina: I think that's fair Jacobi, and it's gotta be bitter sweet for the old fans of BC Red Rose. On one hand their watching the continuation of the three time Valley Cup Champions BC Red Rose, on the other hand the Crepitum model and what they've done to the club probably really hurt your opinions on what Red Rose used to be. Now you've got a team that has a real shot at avoiding relegation and you've got a fan started club playing .500 ball in the Third League. Pretty conflicting emotions there. And even if they're over performing, they're still a sub .500 club right now Jacobi.

Jacobi - But they're not as awful as we thought, at least as far as we can tell right now. I think if they stay up, the old Red Rose supporters may become Cheeseheads after all. Speaking of conflicted fans! Metro BC is up next, tied for tenth right now. They'd avoid relegation on run difference if the season ended today. Ignus Appia is doing Ignus Appia things at the head of that rotation, but he can only start once a week.

Mina - Yeah, we all know their renting out spaces in the Luxio metro region, they did release plans for a 20,000 seater stadium in downtown Vesperti, though the politics are getting awkward on that one. Last in the league of attendance right now as they split time between two stadiums, and of course everyone know they're leaving. And when you've got the Wolves and the Bulls near the top, a third team even if they were staying may be a little much to ask, even in Benjium's biggest city.

Jacobi - I do wonder, if they are relegated do they build the new stadium in East Minorin? There's a good deal of protest against adding a second team, at least amongst the Leavers.

Mina - Its a fair question Jacobi, but that's not one I'm qualified to answer right now!

Jacobi - Right, well let's talk about our next team - and if the season ended today all these teams would be relegated. The Mountport Blues!

Mina - Funny right? We could almost call this Luxio's fourth team, though Mountport wouldn't want us to say so. I do think the return of Mika Nahai will spark this squad, though she didn't look great in those last three games they had against East Minorin going just 1-15, though of course her one hit was the solo shot that would prove to be a game winner. Personal opinion? Mountport stays up, I think they get ahead of Metro.

Jacobi - I think that's where the smart money would be! But I'm not the smartest, I'm going to to take Metro, Mountport staying down. Look I am rooting for the kid, but Cinci Redia just has not been the ace that Mountport really needs. I think the teams that stay up will do so because they can reliably pick up one win because of a starter.

Mina - And you'd rather have Juno Regnum?

Jacobi - Today? Yes, though Cinci would be my long term choice.

Mina - That's fair. And it leads us to City of Charlotta - their down five sports from where you picked them. I think they are better than their record Jacobi, they've shown signs of good baseball, and team owner Viki Venichi has has promised to continue to support the club even if they fall. But they're just four games back, Quintus Gorgelus is coming back next series, its possible they turn this around.

Jacobi - Possible maybe, but I personally don't think its happening. With that short porch they have in right, they really don't have any lefty sluggers to take advantage of it, and that's a shame. And finally - gosh do you even want to talk about Velitrae BC?

Mina - No, I really wish we didn't have to. Look - they've made very little moves to improve their club from the amatuer days, and we know that the Beavers, the Suns, and Ball Club of the Mountains have been relatively successful with that strategy. But Velitrae has made the least moves of any team in the championship, and it just seems like they're over matched.

Jacobi - I would have thought they'd been better. But when your supposed ace - Cristo Cauis - has an ERA of 4.67, and your Catcher seems to have forgotten how to play the position... I just don't know what else can go wrong for them!

Mina- Only 18 wins on the season, 7 games back to escape relegation... Paws I don't see them coming back.

Jacobi - Well before we pick our favorites to replace them - Mina who is our pick for Batter of the Year?

Mina - We talked about it earlier in the show Jacboi, and I can't pick against Giovaini Elios. I think the work he's put in has really paid off. I think his club might slow down a little, I feel the Ball Club of the Mountains ends up in the 5th or 6th place range, but Elios, he won't slow down. How about pitchers?

Jacobi - Well I think three of the top four candidates all play for the Wolves - we talked about them earlier, but I'm sticking with the Zia Suns ace! Quintus Pompei has been lights out. I know you skipped over him a bit when we talked about the Suns - but Quintus Pompei still has an ERA of 1.98. He has yet to throw a complete game - which some fans will knock him for - but he gives the strongest 6 to 7 innings of baseball every week it seems.

Mina - You know I'm not going to argue when you pick a Sun Jacobi. So! We take a quick look at the Second League Table - the PC of Maine Coon Valley and the Cataractium Eels look to be locks. But the final spot is up for grabs between five - maybe up to 8 teams can still win that spot Jacobi. Who are you taking?

Jacobi - I can't pick against the Ball Club at the Old Park Mina, the Reds have looked great, even if they're only two games above .500. Iesia Jisepi is almost as dominate in the Second League as Quintus Pompei has been, and their offense is solid all around. They will need depth if they come to the Championship - particularly pitching, but I think the Old Park will pull it out.

Mina - I like that pick Jacobi, I do, but Python Noodles Westgate BC will be the team to take that last spot! Come'on how can you not be rooting for Caelum Santus? The young man was pouring his whole pay for his younger brother's cancer treatmeant, and when the team found out the Python Noodle Co agreed to take the whole thing on... Its a great story - especially when Santus has played at such a high level.

Jacobi - Great story indeed Mina. In the third league things are a little tighter - at least in regards to the top, only 7 games between first place and 9th place. Real quick Mina, your three picks?

Mina - I'm going with Potts County, Juniors BC, and the Oaks Jacobi.

Jacobi - Paws, I want to pick the Oaks, but I'm going to go with Potts County Jets, Juniors BC and Bracinia Rouners! I think Juniors BC third basemen Blue Nox will be the amateur rep for the national team.

With The Luxio Times Wolves elimination from IBS19, the baseball loving Benjiumians turn their attention to the oldest baseball competition in Benjium, The Valley Cup. Traditionally an amateur event, clubs across many different leagues would qualify and compete for the trophy provided by the host city of Maine Coon Valley (Montifelus Galvi). The first 6 iterations of the competition were played in what is now referred to as "The Old Grounds" which still stand today with a capacity of just under 6,000 seated spectators, though outfield grass picnic spectators can push this to 8,000. A larger "Valley Stadium" -at the time by far the largest stadium in Benjium- was constructed to accommodate the ever-growing crowds which would pack the stadium as the tournament grew in popularity, but also to allow for two games to take place simultaneously. The third base line of "The Old Grounds" is directly connected to the right field stands of "Valley Stadium". The new stadium has an official capacity of 33,333 and recently installed its first video board. The beloved stadium constructed in a park surrounded by a residential area shows its age, as just a single tired bowl with seats which get steeper as the elevation gets higher. The Maine Coon Valley Co-Op - a team owned entirely owned by its players and a limited number of supporters - uses "Valley Stadium" as its home grounds during the BAB season.

The Valley Cup is not a playoff for the BAB - while it takes place entirely in the "postseason" it is more akin to the FA Cup of the English Premier League. A grand total of 47 teams qualify for the most recent edition in the following format:

Round 1
Features 8 amateur or otherwise independent teams, one from each of Benjium's provinces. The Ministry of Culture and Sport's regional bodies select the teams - often through that province's amateur or regional seasons referred to as "circuits". The province Luxida Litus holds a separate qualification tournament. These 8 teams are paired against 8 teams from the BAB's 3rd League.

Round 2
Features the 8 winners of Round 1, the remaining 5 teams from the 3rd League, and 3 random teams from the 2nd League.

Round 3
Features the 8 winners of Round 2, and 8 random teams from the 2nd League.

Round 4
Features the 8 winners of Round 3, the remaining 2 teams from the 2nd League, and 6 teams from The BAB Championship.

Cup Round
Features the 8 winners from Round 4 and the remaining 7 BAB Championship clubs. The winners of the BAB Championship - this year The Luxio Times Wolves - are granted a bye, and these 15 teams play in a final single elimination bracket until the winner is crowned.

Valley Cup Results Day 1
MAINE COON VALLEY - The first day of the two week festivities kicked off as the amateur and semi-pro representatives took on BAB 3rd League Squads. The two blocks surrounding the stadium have all been closed to automobile traffic, and a number of street venders, food trucks, tourists and baseball fans have started trickling into the old residential neighborhood of MCV, and fans of the clubs have been holding improptu pep rallies or claim local pubs as a homebase. Make sure you get yourself some Applecot Pies, or some Vargyr Salmon rolls if your coming out to the parks!

Until the championship round, there is no assigned seating. One ticket allows fans to wander between the two conjoined parks, which makes the 1st-baseline of the Old Grounds and the Right Field Bleachers of Valley Stadium quite packed with casual fans and tourists. There are generally designated areas for each of the eight clubs playing on any given day - and its considered good manners to allow them many of the best seats. With crowds expected to grow by the day, these early rounds often offer the best chance to take in the whole scene.

University of the Mountains (SM) kept the Melium Bears BC scoreless to remain the only non-BAB team in the Valley Cup. The Bears – who won promotion to the BAB Second League this season struggled against the college team from Saquas Montus. It should be noted to our tourists that in baseball there is no restrictions on who plays for a college team in Benjium – though the University of the Mountains maintains that the teams is open to only students, staff, faculty and their families. UM’s baseball team – known as the Dew Sox – used three pitchers: Abepha Samaria, Daphali Arator, and Marco Pago – all of whom are actively pursuing degrees according to a university spokesperson. The three combined to shut out the Bears. The early morning game caught them hibernating perhaps? Head Coach Kito Efonalo received a verbal warning to watch his temper – while he was chewing out his own team in the 7th inning. The speech wasn’t motivational enough to spark the Bears who suffer a disappointing early round exit. All the other games involving non-BAB squads were decided by just one run. The Cataractium Eels – who were promoted to the Championship this season – narrowly avoided a similar defeat, holding off the Tabtac Circuit All-Stars 1-0. Third League winners Oaks of Frankonia held off the Gunners Baseball Club 3-2. And the Potts County Jets – also recently promoted to the Second League edged out The Unicorns of Luxida Litus. The Unicorns were a popular dark horse pick to make a deep run - but a risky suicide squeeze by the Jets in the top of the 9th produced what would be the game winning run. It was an exciting day particularly in Valley Stadium - with Ball Club at the University and Saturnalia Electronics Co. both winning on walk-off 2-run homeruns.

Some interesting notes here! Previously eliminated Giant City United and United BC Giants are not related - but chose their names for essentially the same reason. Giant City is a rural region which "United" a handful of smaller clubs in order to get their club into the BAB, They play in Western Siluna Felis and have had a decent supporter group here since their first game on day 1, Giant City refers to the giant pine trees in the region. United BC Giants is also a combination of two clubs in the town of Wayanum near the West Minorin border. The two clubs representing counties within the BAB face off - Potts County of Pinusu vi Saxa and Ash County of Saxa Canatiyo. Finally two fan based "rebel" clubs face off - Independent City of Light was created in response to the Luxio Media Co. purchasing of the Luxio Wolves and Pink Rose BC was created in response to Crepitum Dairy Co.'s purchase of the historic Red Rose BC.

Day 3
The third day of the Valley Cup saw the final amateur club knocked out as the University of the Mountains fell to the Ball Club at the Old Park - a team rising into the championship - 8-6. Only one current 3rd League side remains - Potts County Jets - though the Jets are rising to the 2nd League next season, Independent City of Light and White Lake White Sox are both still standing - both of them will be relegated to the 3rd League next year. In perhaps the most exciting game on paper the Pro Club of Maine Coon Valley took on the Cataractium Eels - the first and second place finishers in the BAB's 2nd League. The Eels used a big 3-run inning in the 7th to rally over the 2nd League Champions and remain in the cup. PCMCV was well supported but there were many locals openly rooting against "the Greens" - largely from the Co-Op faithful. Reports of a few skirmishes between fan groups outside the stadium were unconfirmed.

Day 4 Matchups - Home/Away decided by coinflip.
Two games on day four featured exclusively 2nd League squads, guaranteeing at least two teams outside the BAB Championship in the Round of 16. Taking place on opposite fields in the nightcap, the rising Ball Club at the Old Park defeated Python Noodles Westgate BC 5-3 at the Old Grounds while Stanley Athletics Inc. coasted over North Star BC 7-1. Independent City of Light defeated the struggling City of Charlota 5-2. This means Charlota has gone from a fringe contender for the BAB championship at the beginning of the year - to being relegated - to going 0-1 in the Valley Cup. Independent's win means they will join Metro BC, Luxio Bulls, and The Luxio Times Wolves as teams from Luxio as qualifiers for the Round of 16. Baseball's popularity has exploded in the southern city, and many people think it will soon replace Maine Coon Valley as the cultural home of the sport in Benjium. Many Bulls and Wolves fans attended cheering on for the younger brother club of the city. In the most exciting game of the day, the Potts County veteran Josepi Efonalo dueled head to head with Zia starter Luigi Bianchi the staunch Suns' bullpen. Issac Dexius' solo homerun in the eighth was the sole run of the game and a teary eye Efonalo was given a standing ovation from the crowd at the Old Grounds.

The Luxio Bulls knocked out Metro BC - marking the final game for Metro BC as the club officially announced plans to build a Ballpark in Vesperti. Bulls' Ace Pahotu Zatitila shutdown Metro's lineup for 8 of 9 innings before yielding a run in the 9th. Closer Hados Avalon closed the game out as the Bulls held on to a narrow 2-1 win.

The Bats were dominant in a game that they were largely able to coast through. Gambling on a bullpen game had paid off for them at least so far as their offense hung crooked numbers in the 1st, 5th and 8th on the way to a 13-6 win. Henrietta Pep Girodano put together a 3 RBI performance and Gennaro Jomo's added two more with a monster 475 foot homer.

The Cheesers seemed to lean into playing the heel, as the mid-table Championship side knocked out the 3rd place finishers from the Ball Club of the Mountains. Giovanni Elios was notably absent for BCM, leading to some speculation that he may be being shopped around. Sonalo Vino threw 8ks in 6.2 innings of work.

BCOP will be joining the Championship next season, but their already looking like a club that is capable of competing at that level. After using what was largely a B-squad for the first two days, the Reds A-squad looked impressive against a Railroaders' Athletic Club team that while competitive, has to chalk this season up to mediocre. Infanso Amico blasted two homeruns, but couldn't carry the RR's. BCOP threw ace Iesia Jisepi, and she performed well, and likely will have the arm to throw again if the Reds are able to make a deep run.

Cinderella keeps on dancing! Independent City of Light narrowly escaped Stanley Athletics Inc. The Flames will play in the 3rd League after relegation this season, but they find themselves in the Quaterfinals of the Valley Cup. Their reward is a date with BAB Champions The Luxio Times Wolves who join the fray this next round, fresh off a top half finish at the International Baseball Slam.

Fans crammed in to the ballpark for the hometown Co-Op and nearby Silvia Park. In what felt like a throwback game to the amateur days, the midday game was rocking and rolling. The Co-Op scored early and often, and while the Beavers mounted a small comeback in the 6th, but the bullpen lead by Lucius Bursio shut it down. The young Opita Readie knocked in two runs with a double in the fourth for The Co-Op and Reni Exagio enjoyed a 3/3 day.

The Suns were left scratching their heads as Cinci Reida returned to form. Nicknamed "Coinflip" she threw the complete game shutout against the BAB Runnerups. Mika Nahai continued to be clutch, a lead-off triple in the 9th set up the sacrifice fly for the walk-off victory.

The Valley Cup (WBC56 Cylce)
The Valley Cup - a bronze trophy adorned with ash leaves is awarded annually to the winner of a single elimination tournament featuring teams from all across the nation of Benjium. Bronze and orange are considered to be national colors of Benjium, and ash is not only a tree in Maine Coon Valley, but also the most common material used in the bats used by the players on the field. This year's final features The Maine Coon Valley Co-Op and The Ball Club of the Old Park.

The MCV Co-Op "Cats" were formed in response to baseball being officially professionalized in baseball. The city of Maine Coon Valley granted use of the 33,333 capacity "Valley Park" to a Player's Cooperative Union. Players own approximately 66% of the club and fans own the rest. Many players in the Co-Op were opposed to the widespread professionalization and sought to ensure the players would be the ones who reaped the most rewards. After a very disappointing regular season in which the Co-Op finished 9th, the Cats find themselves playing for the trophy many consider to still be the crown achievement of Benjium baseball. Led by Player-Manger Oppi Belisar, the Co-Op is a team of largely veterans of the amateur game. Ball Club at the Old Park "Reds" play in what may be the first purpose built baseball fields in the town of Red Clay (Agilutum). The grounds have been expanded a few times in the four decades, but have kept their rather "hodgepodged" look. A stone and wooden arch along the first base line serves as a main gate, with a walk between clubhouse and storage facilities and then under the stands. Holding only about 3,000 - the "Old Park" will be undergoing further renovation as they join the BAB Championship after winning promotion from the Second League this past season. BCOP has won 5 games in order to get to this point and continue to prove themselves a capable club, even when playing top level competition. Iesia Jisepi has been a real ace for the club, and she's likely to pitch at least a little, which will be her 3rd game in 6 days.
