Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii is the largest active volcano on Earth. It last eruption was in 1984. This was not unexpected as the mountain had been showing signs of reawakening as early as late summer. As of right now the lava flow poses no threat to populated areas.
Mauna Loa is a shield volcano and eruptions can often last days or weeks. It is not capable of explosive eruptions like that of Vesuvius.
The eruption will likely remain in the news for some time and it will be interesting to watch happens. Hopefully the lava flow remains away from populated areas.

Shield volcanos are the best volcanoes to simply marvel up close. You can't get killed by them (unless if you get caught in a lava flow) whereas composite and cinder cones spew harmful gases into their air, not to mention pyroclastic flows that are extremely fast. Lava flows of shield volcanoes are much slower than pyroclastic flows.

Plus you get videos of them slowly eating cars n'stuff which is hypnotizing...as long as it's not your car.

"Car Destruction ASMR"
But anyways, the only major populated areas on the Big Island are Hilo and Kailua-Kona. The only time a lava flow ever reached Hilo was in 1881, and no lava flow has ever reached Kailua-Kona.
