On the last night of yesteryear the old king set out for a nearby region only to disappear without a trace ... His Grace's Ship, one of the most secure and commodious in these lands, floundered off the Pirate Coast ... The king brought with him his whole entourage; the heir to the throne and his one and only son, the chancellor, constable, and marshal of his royal council ... and the fate of his realm, the hegemon kingdom in these lands of city states and principalities, which fell into disarray ... his people could scarcely imagine the anarchy that followed.

Day 1
Day 1
Ealhswith was not a kingdom just yesterday.
It was still dark when the bakers started in on their daily routine, holding their coffee cups, yawning and scratching their heads. Inside the stone walls, row upon row of houses for clerks and artisans covered this burgeoning city, and the bakers' were always the first to open. They welcomed the council rubbish collectors taking their first meal breaks away from their loud trucks, which were the only vehicles on these streets around this time. They talked loudly in groups, pointing and looking in the direction of the castle above, where she stood watching.
The people would no doubt have much to talk about today. They were the citizens of another country yesterday. In about three hours from now, they would open their morning papers and found that its name had changed to become the Royal Herald, not Principality, and if they opened the internet from their phones they would see the new name of their country. They would welcome the chance to talk about something exciting, something to distract their mind from their daily lives—working on a minimum wage, paying bills on time, and perhaps where to buy cheaper groceries next week.
There was nothing else to look at from her binoculars. Most of the historic houses of the prosperous taxpayers below were still dark, their owners not yet up. So she closed the window and stood in silence. Every now and again her advisors would come forward, like anxious cats, and pointed to a large pile of papers on her desk.

An Open Letter to International Diplomats from the Lady of the Ealhswithers
To the most esteemed international members of the diplomatic corps:
It is with great joy that I bring you the news of this realm's opening to new embassies and other missions within its borders. The Kingdom of Ealhswith is a newly declared kingdom of almost three million people, bordering four other principalities and states in these southern lands, while far to our north are three further foreign realms.
Our largest city's climate is mild, ideal for honourable diplomats such as yourself to stay and conduct the affairs of statesmanship in your capacity as representatives of your lands. I have elected to undertake the role of Secretary of State for my country, based in this city, with my chief aim being to open an easy-to-reach line of communication with your governments.
The application for an embassy in Ealhswith can be found by clicking "SELECT ALL" below:
There will be much to write and converse about. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Yours faithfully,
Ælfswydæ
