National holidays in your nation?

Postby New Treyland » Thu Nov 03, 2022 8:18 am

Does your country have any national holidays in your country that nowhere else celebrates? It could be a prominent figure's birthday, a military parade of some kind, or whatever else.

The Principality of New Treyland celebrates Comradery Day on November 2nd, which is also the Heir-Regent's birthday. People are encouraged to go out and do whatever (in the boundaries of the law) they want with their friends.

Most of our holidays are shared with many other countries, being either Christian-related holidays, Labour Day, Armistice Day, or New Year's Day. The sole exception is Liberation Day, celebrated on 3 September every year since 1946, and commemorating the 1943 liberation of the Maidas from the Nazi-backed occupation government led by Ivo Ulrich. The significance here is that celebrate this in lieu of a unification day, which happened on 1 April 1884 as a Dominion of the British Empire, or in lieu of the adoption of our current republican constitution, which happened on 11 September 1949; hence, this is in essence our National Day or Independence Day equivalent.

the 22nd of June is Union Day in Medzhumoramia, representing the date in 1702 that the Act of Union established Medzhumoramia as a union of 5 parliamentarily represented and culturally protected kingdoms.

Happening to be situated near or sometimes on the summer solstice, it is often celebrated with outdoor activities such as barbecues, picnics, beachgoing, fireworks displays and cultural festivals. People may dress in their respective traditional ethnic costume.

Biggest holidays here are the religious ones, especially the two Eids. However, there's plenty of localized holidays too such as Republic Day, May Day, and some others. Christians are the largest Non-Muslim minority so it's common for them to take time off work during Easter and Christmas. This is not a national law, however, and really at the discretion of workplaces that contain Christian employees (most are willing to grant it as workers are the ones making the decisions in the workplaces).

We celebrate most Traditional holidays. Christmas, Halloween, Hanukkah, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, Thanksgiving, Etc. However, one day that is some what original, although admittedly a cliché, is Flag Day. when on June 11th, the Mercenaries take out the flags of the countrys they come from and stable them to there barrack doors. Then we have a parade, and we all eat outside for a Picnic.

Sinofarsis celebrates three major holidays:
Gūòlhïyxaqín, which falls on November 7th
Partisan’s Day, which falls on August 25th
Black Straits’ Day, which falls on March 19th

Gūòlhïyxaqín is the Sinofarsi equivalent of New Year and is set on the date of the creation of the first Sinofarsi dynasty, the Gūòlhïygräii. People mostly eat special “sky cakes” and it is a tradition to hunt in one of the country’s many hunting grounds. Military parades also occur at this time.

Partisan’s Day is the day when the Sinofarsi Civil War ended with a Nationalist defeat against the Monarchists. The Sinofarsi people mostly celebrate with special soups with herbs found near the Turkmenbashi Gulf. It is also celebrated with a military parade and speeches from both the King and President.

Black Straits’ Day is a time when people celebrate the trade across the Caspian and the wealth it brought to Sinofarsis. It is celebrated with traditional Russian, Mongolian, Chinese, Chechen and Persian dishes. It is also the day when all Sinofarsi ships in the Caspian return to their ports.

There exist three unique holidays in Terrapacis:
  • Constitution Day - 11 April - Commemorates the date on which the constitution of Terrapacis went into effect in 1927 and the establishment of the modern Socialist Federation of Terrapacis.
  • Settlement Day - 1 June - Commemorates the establishment of the first permanent English settlement, Charles Town, on Terrapacis in 1623 (the actual date of the establishment of Charles Town was on 5 June 1623 O.S. [15 June 1623 N.S.]); this holiday is generally considered the unofficial start of summer in Terrapacis.
  • Civil War Memorial Day - 11 December - Sometimes also referred to as Revolution Day or Uprising Day, commemorates the start of the general strike and uprising lead by the labour movement, which soon plunged the Dominion of Terrapacis into the Terrapacisian Civil War (which would last until April 1926 and ultimately lead to the establishment of the Socialist Federation of Terrapacis).

By definition, A Federal Holiday is a celebration to commemorate or remember a significant event, person or group in Countesian history. Outside of critical services, federal holidays are a non-working day. There are currently eight federally recognised holidays.

1st of January - New Years Day
A day off to celebrate the new year.

13th of February - Day of Remembrance
An opportunity to commemorate and recognise the sacrifices made by soldiers and emergency workers in the name of Countesias freedom and security.

20th of March - Earth Day
Earth day takes place on the very first day of spring, and is an opportunity to celebrate the environment, nature and the preservation of both for future generations.

1st of May - Labour Day
In recognition of the Countesian workforce and their daily contribution to the nations prosperity, the first day of summer is given to the people as a nation-wide day off.

8th of July - Unification Day
Unification day is a celebration of founding of the old Kingdom of Countesia under King Blake the 1st, as a result of the ceasefire between the Craxx Empire and the Counts Alliance

10th of August - Founders Day
The birthday of the first king of Countesia, King Blake the 1st. Although another federal holiday celebrates the ousting of the Monarchy, Founders day is still observed as one of the most popular federal holidays largely in part due Blakes leadership being viewed as instrumental to holding off the war machine of the Craxx Empire long enough to broker a ceasefire.

9th of September - Federation Day
Federation Day marks the date of the ousting of the monarchy and Countesias transition to a wholly democratic federal republic.

25th of December - Christmas Day
Although the Countesian constitution is secular, December 25th, considered to be the birth of Jesus in the Christian Bible, is celebrated as a federal holiday as an opportunity for people to exchange gifts with family and loved ones.

There is an eight-day public holiday called The End, which literally commemorates the end of each year. It has been likened to the festival which some nations call Christmas, though without the religious connotations.

Ktathriori is celebrated around one third of the way into the year; this is a two-day public holiday.

These are the only ones we have.

Tangatarehua has holiweeks rather than holidays, plus the Empress's birthday on July 1st.

The main holidays, which usually last around a week are:

Te Whakanui i a Rehua: (Festival of Rehua), usually held in the last week of March to mark the Autumn Equinox as well as the appearance of the star Rehua (also known as Antares, in the constellation Scorpio) in the night sky. Mostly people get really, really drunk to celebrate not unlike St. Patrick's Day (which sometimes to corresponds with the dates) only it lasts a whole week.

Hakari o te Takurua: (Feast of Winter), usually held in the last week of June to mark the winter solstice. Usually marked by a family meal, traditionally roast pork and kumara/potatoes with traditions not dissimilar to western Christmas, sometimes including gift-giving.

Te Whakanui i a Puanga: (Festival of Puanga), usually held in the last week of September (sometimes early October) to mark the Spring Equinox and appearance of the star Puanga (also known as Rigel in the constellation Orion) in the night sky. Fertility is a significant theme; brace yourself for public nudity and dancing in the streets.

Hakari o te Raumati: (Feast of Summer), usually held in the last week of December to mark the summer solstice and usually coincides with Christmas (which is not celebrated in Tangatarehua) and New Years Eve/Day. Basically it's the week that everyone gets time off work to go on a summer holiday somewhere, the beaches, roads and transportation systems get nice and clogged during Hakari o te Raumati.

Apart from New Year's Eve, Easter Monday and, of course, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, a holiday unique to Vallermoore is on July the 8th - Queen Yocasta's birthday. People get a rare paid day off, there are military parades on the main street of Grand City, our capital, feasting, even for the homeless and prisoners, and by night from sunset to as late as 2:00AM there are so many fireworks it sounds like the country is a war zone with all the bangs and crackles. The Queen herself rides out in her royal robes and crown with the President of the Central Committee, who is a sapient pony, trotting along beside her, and on this day he serves her food, even though she has no real power. Beer is served in military bases, and officers have wine. Major-generals and above are allowed vodka. As long as the country is not at war, privates can openly ask questions of NCOs and officers and not get in trouble for it. Coupledoms go out on dates hand in hand and cuddle and kiss even in smart resturants that normally frown on it but it is allowed on this day. Some people cross-dress for fun on this day. Priests of all our religions wear their finest robes, and there are no whippings or executions on this day. Pop stars hold concerts. A blind eye is turned to drones in most places where they are banned the rest of the year, like national parks. Of course a few idiots get drunk and fight or drive drunk and end up under arrest, but most don't.

We have two national holidays in Jimsylvania, one of which is the Winterval and lasts for five days. Anyone who has to work at any time from 24 to 28 December inclusive is entitled to pay at five times their usual rate.

New Year's Day (which in Jimsylvania is 1 March) is not officially a holiday but many businesses give their staff the day off regardless.

Our other national holiday is called Coronation Chicken Day and marks the anniversary of the crowning of the current monarch. Thus, the date moves. King James V was crowned on 30 November and chose the first Sunday on or after this date each year to be Coronation Chicken Day, meaning that this year it is on Sunday 3 December. As with the Winterval, anyone who has to work is entitled to quintuple pay.

Many holidays stem from the country's Christian heritage and western culture: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Epiphany, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Assumption of the Virgin, All Saint's Day, and Immaculate Conception Day are all Catholic-derived holidays. During the country's period as a People's Republic, attempts were made to replace these with roughly equivalent Worker's or Labour or Feast Days, but the older names stuck.

Further to those, there are a number of civic holidays: Family Day, Constitution Day, Aristoria Day, Labour Day, Harvest Day, and Boxing Day.

This makes for a total of 15 statutory holidays in Aristoria.

The last odd-numbered nights of the last 10 nights of Ramadan using the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar (ie this coming Ramadan, those days will be at the beginning of April using the Gregorian calendar) are holiday nights in that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said that the Night of Divine Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) is one of these odd-numbered nights. Many people pray, make dua'a (invocations to Allah) and meditate in mosques during these nights, either part of the night or the entire night, and Sufi orders hold large dhikr (remembrance of Allah) sessions, and there are halal games and food for all from sunset until sunrise.

In the Democratic Republic, there presently exist a total of ten named and recognized public holidays, plus an additional ten unnamed generic Public Holidays. Under the auspices of the Public Holidays Law 1960, all government offices are closed and all government workers are paid full-time during each the twenty total holidays and all workers (excepting for those employed in essential services) are guaranteed a paid day off on Labour Day and the ten Public Holidays. Sagrea generally ignores outside holidays, save for New Year's, but we have some of our own here.

  • Conscription Day: Held on June 19th, about a week after the last day of schooling. Those who have completed mandated schooling (K-12) are to be conscripted into the army. Large festivities are held in the capitals of each district, where people travel to see the newest generation of brave soldiers defend their nation. The conscripts parade through the cities, where a ceremony involving the respective district's governor and marshals ensues to officially enroll the conscripts into the military, as well as pronounce the conscripts to be legal adults with the bestowing of their "division name" (their last name, assigned based on the region they are stationed in at native soil). The rest of the day is marked with heavy feasting and speeches of veterans and local officials who congratulate the new conscripts.
  • Independence Day: Held on December 21st, when the Declaration of Sovereignty was signed by the first Supreme Leader, Smodar Duk, back in 1931. The most prominent celebration is in the capital, Dvirkh, where a large military parade is held. More commonly, the day is celebrated with family and local community with good food and Sagrean patriotism.
  • Feast of Rations: Celebrated on April 4th This celebration is more commemorative, remembering the Battle of Rations during the Sagrean Revolution. Sagrean troops, led by Smodar Duk, were outnumbered and starving, but managed to ambush enemy troops who had intercepted their food supplies. The soldiers celebrated by having a feast of the rations. Today, many different foods are eaten with family, but most commonly Mnizut, a stew made with Sagrean chilies.
  • Midwinter Festival: celebrated on January 5th, this holiday is perhaps the strangest, since it has little to do with winter. This holiday is considered quite the contrast from contemporary Sagrean living, as the day is filled with community indulgence of food, entertainment, and sex. This is perhaps the oldest holiday, having roots more early Sagrea rather than the current government. Foreign observers have described it as the only day people are allowed to "destress" before having to go back to a "rigid way of living".
