Calejo is medium sized republic located on the western coast of the Continent of Ibica, bordered on the east by The United States of Ibica and the north by Pherigo; Calejo is a member state of the Terra Ceralis' Ceralis Forum.

Recently, political tension has been building as the ruling Frente Calejo party has realized that they cannot win this years election, but they refuse to leave office. Frente Calejo had been the ruling party until the 1980's, when much more 'free' elections where allowed to be held, and they removed from power. A worsening economic situation, and pervasive corruption and crime had led a longing in the older generation to return to the "good ol' days." Sure you couldn't always trust that the government was telling the truth, and maybe they oppressed minorities and whoever they decided were deviants; but cartels didn't control large parts of the country and everyone that wasn't oppressed could actually afford to eat.

As should shock no one, the only thing Frente Calejo brought back with them in 2016 was oppression. Cartels are more powerful than ever, the economy has not improved at all, but freedom of expression of any ideas the administration doesn't like is entirely gone. And its election time. Polling centers in areas where there is support for the opposition have been blockaided by federal and sometimes local law enforcement, areas that support Frente have been able to vote freely. In some areas where federal authorities are blocking access to voters, local and state officials have been at odds with their federal counter parts. Calejo is a powder keg waiting to explode.

Several opposition politicians have been arrested. One major opposition party politician, Raúl Hidalgo, leader of the Social Democrats and President Elizondo's competition in the election, has fled the country with the help of neighboring Ibica's embassy, being flown out on a plane owned by the Ibican State Department, and therefore not searched. In response, Calejo has severed official ties with Ibica, and given the Embassy until friday to leave the country. Should fighting breakout, its clear that Ibica would intervene on the side of the opposition.

Morally opposed to the Frente Calejo regime, and very much in favor of the local governments and police that are trying to uphold democracy. Would also happily shoot up the cartels if they weren't in sovereign foreign territory.

Type of Support: For now, the government is just openly outspoken in their support of the local governments, and is trying to carefully apply political pressure to get the federal government to allow the democratic process to go ahead normally. May intervene militarily if Mitheldalondian lives are threatened.

Amount of Support: Just embassy/consulate security for now, but will probably send humanitarian and relief supplies if/when fighting breaks out. There should also be a carrier group somewhere within 1000 nmi of Calejo that will help evacuate or rescue Mitheldalondian citizens if needed.

Reason for Involvement: IC political involvement is because Mitheldalond is staunchly democratic (even though we have a king), and doesn't want to see Calejo become another oppressive dictatorship. Military involvement would be to protect Mitheldalondian citizens (and potentially to rescue embassy staff if that becomes necessary.)
OOC, this was a good read and an interesting scenario. I don't think I've ever seen police vs. military like this before.

Additional Information: Mitheldalond supports freedom and democracy, but also takes matters of national sovereignty and self-determination very seriously (and still has some slight tendencies toward political isolationism), so they won't interfere with the internal affairs of other nations lightly. They will however, always come to the aid of Mitheldalondian citizens in distress, and will generally do whatever is necessary to protect them. So if some Mitheldalondian citizens were to be killed, taken hostage, falsely imprisoned, etc, or if there was to be some kind of embassy/consulate siege or something like that for whatever reason, the government would get involved. Militarily if diplomacy failed to resolve the situation.
