Works for me.
When I gourmake a sandwich salad like ham, chicken, tuna, or salmon; diced fruit and crushed nut of any kind will be involved.

Salt, pepper, butter, and oil (olive or vegetable) are pretty standard, but one thing that she adds that some people I know find strange is a bit of uncooked bacon. The reasoning behind it is that whatever the meat was cured with will leach into the green beans to improve the flavor. They taste amazing.

So good that until I was 9 or 10, I thought everyone cooked their green beans that way. Then we went to a church dinner and I got a plate of green beans that were made by one of the older ladies there. Apparently some people just open the can and dump them in the pot and let them simmer. I don't think she even added salt to them.

Sounds similar to the French way of cooking peas - Petit pois a la francaise - peas cooked with bacon, lettuce and shallots

Interesting. My mom learned to cook green beans that way from her mother, but her mother wasn't French. She was an American of primarily Irish descent.
