Food combinations you made which seemed odd but worked?

Postby West Bromwich Holme » Fri Sep 16, 2022 8:04 am

When I was about 24, way back in 2010, I made Indian-flavoured burritos, mixed some Indian spices with the Mexican seasoning and added some traditionally Indian ingredients like aubergine and radishes into it.

I was making burritos - vegetarian ones as normal, when I decided to add some more things into it to make it slightly spicier.

It was interesting to find this recipe.

I didn't know I'd made a sort of roti from my experimentation, back then I'd not heard much of Indian-Mexican cuisine (India as in the country, not Native American). But the recipe tasted damn good, perhaps too over-spiced though!

A few years ago, I'd bought croissants in bulk (well, 4 packets worth) from the supermarket, cut them into smaller size, then covered them in either cooking chocolate or dark chocolate, then rolled them in hazelnuts or walnut, then covered the walnut/hazelnuts and chocolate with either powdered sugar or melted (vegan) marshmallows. I'm vegetarian, so bought these for it. Expensive for 2014 prices, but was worth it at Christmas. They're still expensive now.

At the time, I didn't want to just use them for breakfast or as snack food, so that was the way to go... not bad for a small family Christmas party snack food. Better than them just going off. It was a "use up what you've got", apart from the marshmallows, in this one.

Croissants were another thing I made for a bread-and-butter pudding, having bought some at Marks & Spencer, but this was a croissant bread-and-butter pudding with liquorice, blackcurrants (from my garden, washed!), raspberries and a bit of strawberry. An odd combo, but it somehow... seemed to work.

Anyone else got any more stories of recipes they tried which may seem odd, but seemed to work?

Peanut-Butter tortillas with hot sauce liberally dumped on the top is my go-to lunch on busy days where I don't have time to meal prep or cook. Some find it strange, but my dad would always make this for me when I was real little, and now that I'm a grown-ass man, I still have an affinity for it. He was a lazy-ass cook, but man some of his lazy lunch concotions work.

I've been taught to pour soy sauce into day old curries to reignite the spiciness and it's something I've also applied to rougail and chili with quite the positive outcomes.
Salt in beer to make some new bubbles and alleviate the bitterness, coffee into waffle/crepe paste is also quite good.

Buffalo Frog legs, basically swamp chicken.

People will either be like "ewwwwww, I dislike Repreteop already, but after seeing that he eats frog legs, I might have to write a condemnation..." or "Repreteops sins are forgiven."

Frog legs somewhat are uncommon? I guess.

Once made a beer float. I forget the beer of the time as it doesn’t matter anymore. The ice cream was a mint ice cream made locally. It was acquired and like most acquisitions the product was ruined with lessor ingredients. Don’t know what they changed and yet it didn’t taste right after that.

I don't even know if that's odd, that was always my go-to at Einstein Bros.

Either that or we both have impeccable taste in bagels.

Cottage cheese with tomatoes and onions, mixed together with a bit of garden vedgetable cream cheese and a bit of salt and pepper. I very much reccomend it - it tastes odd at first (mostly the texture), but oh my god does it work.

How is that odd?

I have seen that especially if the blueberry where the only ones left.

I may have done that one time or another…..

Mozzarella sticks dipped in duck sauce from the Chinese restaurant. Idk if that's very odd but it's a pretty good combo.

It's okay. I've had people tell me I'm weird because I actually prefer the taste of Diet Pepsi/Coke to regular Pepsi/Coke.

It is more that is one of my favorite combos, so I get it basically every time, and every time my friends/family tell me I have weird taste. Guess it is more common then I thought.

Wow, a lot of hate for mayonnaise here. I thought that sort of thing was confined to where I grew up. I’ve honestly never met an American that didn’t like mayonnaise IRL. I mean, I knew they existed, I just never thought people would admit to it so openly.

It's a racial/national thing. Mayo is a stereotypical white American thing

When I was like five we did a "make your own sandwich" lesson in primary school for some reason and I ended up making a jam and cress sandwich which I apparently quite liked even though it seemed a very odd combination.

I think a little bit of vinegar goes well in a tuna mayo sandwich - particularly apple cider vinegar.
