Stalemate: Dead End Meeting
Ampenan - After around 5 days of the bilateral meeting between Pemecutan and Cakranegara for Gili Anakan Naval Base status, not a single decision was made. Pemecutan delegation spokesperson, Eka Danupraja said that both parties were so clinging with their opinion and argument that no middle ground can be taken from it. It is clear that Cakranegaran government wanted the base to be closed as the country is now aloud to build their military. While Pemecutanian government insisted that the base have to be stay there to help the region defensing their area. Something that viewed negatively by the Cakranegaran. On the other hand a rally of protests have been held for several days in front of the naval base gate as the meeting was conducted. The protest is pro-closure as they demand the base to be closed and for Pemecutanian to get out of the region.
Pemecutan opposition leader, Kunti Devi asked the government to cut back the military spending. "We are living in a relatively peaceful region and in a peaceful era. Why do we need a lot of alutsista?", she said. She also pointed out that naval base is huge drain in the country's military budget. Logistic transportation is costly enough. She added that the government have to switch the focus to economy as the country is now entering a slowing period in their economy. And she pointed out Mengwi Agreement is the cause of it. Political expert, Jason Astaputra stated that Gili Anakan base is a prestige to Pemecutan and the government might do anything so it will stay there. It will hurt the nation's pride if the naval base closed down. Although he pointed out that the government needs to make another approach towards Cakranegara government. We all know that Cakranegaran view negatively towards Pemecutan from centuries back. And the sentiment don't fell down. Even Pemecutan involvement in their civil war increase the negative sentiment. Although from the 4 countries in Cendana Islands (Cakranegara, Rarungan, Toluiwa and Kencana), Pemecutan have a close ties with Rarungan and Toluiwa. Both nations are signatory of Mengwi Agreement. Astaputra highlighted that resolving the base issue might elevate the trust from Cakranegaran government and citizens. And it will change the view of the country in their perspective. Something that the government needs to be done if they want to spread their influence further in the region.
