Are line breaks counted in factbooks?

Postby The Finntopian Empire » Fri Aug 19, 2022 10:01 am

I want to make my factbook readable, but I am very tight on space, so don't want to add unnecessary empty space. Are line breaks counted?

Where is "your factbook?" Just telling us that you need help with reducing the character count, but in two slightly-different ways, is not going to help anyone.

Sorry, it's https://www.nationstates.net/nation=the ... ok/id=main
I don't need help reducing the character count. I just want to know if line breaks

Like this, are counted

It might be easier - and better - to just split it into different factbooks. An example of that: https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=66040 (Government and Politics has a summary and links to another factbook).

There's also Ponderosa's guide to writing wiki-style factbooks (which is where I got the example from).

IMO I'd just move the sections about genetic engineering, time machines and climate change into a new factbook and add line breaks (and more information!) to the rest of the main factbook; those three subjects don't appear to have any obvious, direct relevance to The Finntopian Empire as an IC entity.

For instance, in the climate change section, you refer to the UK's carbon dioxide emissions OOCly. But in the Differences in Geography section, which is part of your IC canon, you say that England is under Irish rule and Cornwall, Sussex, Wales and Scotland are all independent countries. This will no doubt cause confusion among (very careful) readers.

It's less about just shortening it, I'm probably going to split it into different factbooks and do a bunch of stuff with it, but what I'm trying to find out is if line breaks count to the overall character amount, and if it would make me closer to the character limit

I think everything is counted, if you're talking about the situation where you get a database error.

After some testing, I would theorize that

A) Linebreaks are counted towards the 'too much data' error.
B) Linebreaks 'weigh' more than one character. The very rough test that I tried showed that adding a linebreak required removing around 3-4 characters to compensate. I'm not 100% sure about how constant this figure is, however - I only tested it out once, on a large block of continuous characters followed by one linebreak and a single character.
1 John 2:1-2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father - Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

Matthew 5:43-44 You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

More than likely the data is literally <br> and the limit counts against html :p

The exact number of characters depends on the character encoding of the source and the database table.
