BROKEN PROMISES
Two peoples promised the same land by a foreign power, only one will be able to call it their homeland.

The year is 1992. False promises are often times both the key to solving a crisis, or the beginning of a new one. When different parties are promised the same thing, only one party will get what they want and the others will only be left with broken promises. At the end of the Cold War, two peoples promised the same land by a foreign power gather their allies and do everything in their power to defend the integrity of their homeland.
In 1858, the declining Merovar empire leased it's port cities across the Maghreb to the Sexer Empire in the face of an insurmountable rebellion by the Berber natives. For more than a century, a foreign power rules these valuable port cities through both world wars and the Cold War- Until finally, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The Sexers held on to the Maghrebi ports for fear that if they were relinquished to the Andellish, they would not be able to hold it and rebellions potentially backed by communists would erupt in these cities; spreading communism rapidly across the Middle East and North Africa, and potentially Southern Europe; and prevented them from acquiring independence, for fear that the Andellish would lean closer to the Soviet Union and bring communism into Western Europe.
The Soviet Union has fallen, and now there is no more excuse. The Andellish are of the understanding that they have leased these ports to the Sexers, and that they must now be returned to their historical sovereign. However, the natives have been guaranteed more freedom and autonomy under the Sexers Empire than they ever had under the Andellish Empire and wish nothing to do with Haemsol Andelos. The Sexers are considering a referendum, but their Andellish allies have exhausted all diplomatic means to deny the referendum from ever happening, angering the natives enough that they would consider siding with communist and eastern Islamist rebels, prompting Haemsol Andelos to prepare to launch a special military operation to reclaim their land.
The days of the great Faranji and Merovar empires may be long gone, but the Andellish people still look to tomorrow and see a future of a Mediterranean power; and the first step to this dream, may just be reclaiming the Maghreb and re-establishing the Andellish hegemony over the Western Mediterranean. An Andellish power in the Mediterranean may prove to be a valuable ally, or an insurmountable enemy. Meanwhile, the people of the Maghreb look around them to see all the empires crumbling and finally see the opportunity for them to be free to choose their own path and stand by their true principles for the first time in centuries. Their fate if successful is uncertain and thus makes the future of the Western Mediterranean uncertain, but it is their only chance at freedom and they are willing to do whatever it takes and work with whoever will support them.
