Footwear in your nation

Postby Chadtonia » Tue Jul 05, 2022 3:08 pm

Many people put on their shoes without even thinking too much about them, to protect themselves from the elements. Some people use shoes to present a type of style. People in my nation wear a variety of shoes, which are traditionally hand-made, though sneakers are becoming more common with the teenagers. I will answer my questions as well.

A long time ago this question was locked for unexplainedd reasons. I added a couple more questions as well...

What type of footwear do people in your nation wear?

What are the brands and styles?

Do your people take off their footwear when entering a home?

How much does a cheap pair of footwear cost?

How much does an expensive pair of footwear cost?

Do people make their own shoes? If so, can you describe them?

It was most likely locked due to an insufficient OP, and it that is still the case. In order for it not to be locked by a mod, it would need to feature a broad topic and a semi-detailed explanation about the topic. Everything else belongs in the Miscellaneous Worldbuilding Thread, which can be found at the top of this subforum.

Considering there is a thread about what people wear in their countries, I am considering this former action bias.

There is nothing offensive here. It's about footware, for God's sake.

It's not offensive. It just upsets the mods when all you have is two short sentences and a questionnaire.

Depends on the species

Humans are famous for shoes with many kinds for special purposes but for most beings, shoes aren't all the necessary. Ponies usually might have metal shoes that attaches to the hooves, though rubber shoes are more popular and make much less noise. Some shoes can be quite simple to very ornate, some may wrap around the cannons for added leg protection. But griffons don't like to cover their paws, dragons can naturally withstand heat and even cold with their thick scales and their claws would probably tear up most material.

Humans make shoes out of cloth, leather, wood, sometimes metal, but that's usually an armoured shell around a leather boot. Wooden shoes have been a traditional wear for many Auzkhian humans in the North especially many rural humans. Some humans may opt to wear no shoes at all, since most beings don't need to since their bodies have harder more sturdy feet so to speak, whether it's hooves, paws, talons, claws, and so on.

Decepticons don't cover the entire foot with any sort of shoe, nor do we strap anything to our feet, but we do wear foot-treads. Though most of us would bristle or even become outright angry to hear these treads described as being "like tire treads" due to the connection between tires and Autobots, that's actually exactly what they're like (only with far better polymers than Earthian tires have).

Foot-treads are stuck to the bottom of the feet with an extremely powerful adhesive, and are typically left on until they're bald or they fall off. They protect our metal feet from scrapes and general weardown. On Cybertron, they are especially important. The planet's surfaces are metal, and so are we - and metal-on-metal contact quickly causes a high level of wear. Foot-treads prevent such contact from happening.

Most of us use what could be called a "standard" type of foot-tread. It's thick enough to last about a year under normal use, and can withstand the typical landing. Note that we usually transform from plane mode while in the air, and then drop to the ground on our feet, so our foot-treads must have a bit of shock absorption capability (though most of the shock absorption is done by purpose-built shock absorbers in our legs). Those who like to drop down from higher-than-normal altitudes on a frequent basis tend to use foot-treads that are thicker, but not so thick as to overly deaden the intimidating CLANG or THUD sound that doing this move will make.

Unlike standard tires, foot-treads can be purchased in many colors. Typically, we match our foot paint as closely as possible. This is why it often looks like we have no footwear on at all.

Those who are going to planets with unusual ground hazards can buy specialized foot-treads to protect themselves. Typical variations include fireproofing, resistance to cuts from sharp rocks, and similar upgrades. They are thought of in much the same way as humans think of steel-toed boots: As protective equipment that is only good for wearing during a particular task or job. Because of this, they are typically made so that it is easier to change them out than it is with the normal ones, but will still stay in place when needed.

Our humans have various kinds of footwear, ranging from fancy trainers and fine leather shoes to army boots and steel-towed boots. Sapient ponies have horse-shoes, iron or steel for most of them and silver-plated ones for the richest ones. Open changelings often just *form* shoes for their feet, whilst those under cover buy shoes.

What type of footwear do people in your nation wear?
usually athletic or casual shoes with socks underneath. Flip-flops and sandals are rare and are most commonly worn in certain hot environments, such as beaches. Footwear isn't always worn, but it is considered taboo to walk around barefoot, so most people will wear just socks in that situation. Socks underneath shoes are also commonplace.

What are the brands and styles?
The common brands and styles are usually those like found in western countries- Nike, Adidas, etc are popular brands. In terms of stylistic choices, Empirians tend to prefer slimmer shoes as these fit the warm climate better and are less bulky to walk around in.

Do your people take off their footwear when entering a home?
Yes, shoes are considered dirty and muddy and are left on a rug near the home's entrance. Some homes have shelving with cubby-like holes to keep shoes out of the way and off of the floor. Empirians do keep socks on inside, though, as its considered prude to walk around barefoot in most homes.

How much does a cheap pair of footwear cost?
Depends on the type of shoes. More traditional wear (athletic/casual shoes) tend to end up around 50 kroner at lowest, however flip flops or sandals can be as low as 10 kroner.

How much does an expensive pair of footwear cost?
Better built shoes can go for 300-400 kroner at most.

Do people make their own shoes? If so, can you describe them?
No, not really. Native cultures used to but because shoes are rather easy to find making shoes is usually a non-starter.

For most things, sandals are commonplace. Only in extreme cases are any kind of boots worn. Also, footwear must be removed prior to entering any house.
