Part 3


ALLEGHENY Wednesday April 17th

The final leg of the PA campaign began in Allegheny County. In the areas surrounding Pittsburgh, Anderson spent multiple hours going from factory to factory, meeting blue and white collar works and emphasizing his support for steel and other heavy industry. Privately with union leaders he made it a point to say he supported unions and emphasized the threat of Conservatives to the progress made by unions and that he would support groups such as the RIDC. A later meeting with Congressman Not-Robert Corbett had him emphasize civil rights extensively and how they needed an AG that would enforce the civil rights bills of the past decade while developing the economy in minority areas. These were also talking points with Congressman Not-James G Fulton, though they moved on from there to discuss the space race and the importance of using the space race to encourage technological breakthroughs in the United States.

Anderson by this time had implemented a series of billboard advertisements across the state, particularly the more rural areas.

The billboards included a phone number to call and receive more information on the candidate.

“People don’t want to live dependent on the Government. They want pride, self-respect and a real equal chance of success. As President I want to empower people to own their own homes, start their own businesses and have a real piece of our national prosperity.”


BEAVER Thursday April 18th

With the enigmatic Congressman Not-Herman T Schneebell, Glen held a meeting mostly listening to his concerns and waging a personality offensive, trying to charm the man. In the end he focused mainly on school integration and job creation both in PA and across the country. He began in a similar way with Congressman Not-John Saylor, but quickly transitioned to his support for clean air and clean water acts, as well as the need for a Republican Roosevelt caucus to champion environmentalism.

Otherwise his campaigning was HEAVILY focused on the suburbs, preaching law and order, massive grants and increases to police budgets and a federal force dedicated to taking on organized crime.

By this time the article written by Admiral Albert Burke had been reprinted in leaflet form and sent to every registered Republican in both Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. This was done with the assistance of the local Republican Party and its leadership providing extension voter rolls and mailing lists. In addition there was a new letter signed by 94 retired military generals and admirals, attacking General Jackson.

We Are Retired Generals, Admirals and Officers: General Jonathan Jackson is not fit to serve as Commander & Chief

Time and again, over the course of a career spanning decades we have seen (many of us personally) the unrestrained ego and authoritarian tendencies of General Jonathan Jackson cause abject failures on the battlefield, the foreign policy realm, and undermine the rule of law in this country.

General Jackson’s commitment and passion to this country are not to be underestimated, but he has constantly been blindsided by anything that lies outside his preset notions, and has proven more than willing to risk American lives to do nothing more than advance his career. From his failure to foresee the attack of the Communist Chinese in Korea, to his advocacy for nuclear war against them, which included attempting to place American men in harms way to spark a war, and now to sending armed thugs to intimidate voters and circumvent the American process, General Jackson has shown definitely that he serves only his own self interest, and not the interest of the American people.

We, as 94 retired officers in the United States military, are of the opinion that when General Jackson has a choice between his own personal interests and that of the Constitution or the American people that he will pick his own every time. When given the choice between peace and war, he will choose a war in order to gain glory and prestige. Making all this worse is the fact in order to do this he will wrap himself in the American flag to justify it all.

The events of the New Hampshire primary, when individuals hired by the Jackson campaign prevented thousands of people from exercising their constitutional duty is clear evidence of the utter lack of regard for the Constitution and the general rule of law which General Jackson holds. He will be incapable of bringing Law & Order to our streets when he believes himself to be above the law. He will be incapable of bringing

General Washington refused to be a king, given the opportunity General Jackson would not decline.

We are retired Generals, Admirals and Officers:

General Jackson is man who has served admirably his country for years. He was awarded a Medal of Honor for his bravery in the Mexico-United States border. He led the Western Task Force during Operation Torch in North Africa. As Commander of the II Corps, he defeated the Germans at the Battle of El Guettar: the first significant victory of American armor against the German Panzer tanks. He led the Seventh United States Army to capture Palermo and Messina in Sicily, proving to the British Army that the Americans were a forced to be reckoned with. He led American troops during the Normandy landings, and then as commanding officer of the 12th Army Group - the largest group of American soldiers to ever serve under one field commander - he led American troops from Normandy to the Elbe River. As Commander in Chief of the UN Forces in Korea, he successfully pulled off landings at Inchon, recaptured Seoul and pushed the Communist army to the North. When the Red Chinese intervened, General Jackson managed to organized a coherent retreat of the UN forces and launch a counterattack that recaptured Seoul, effectively saving South Korea.

General Jackson is a man who has a long record as military commander and considerable expertise in military affairs. But he also has courage and strength of character. Before his career in the Second World War, he served as a Professor of military science at South Dakota State College, Professor of Mathematics at West Point and served as an instructor of tactics at the U.S. Army Infantry School. As a professor, he taught young officers self-reliance in making their tactical decisions and was popular with his students. As commanding officer, he retained this spirit, treating subordinates with respect.

Our letter should not be read as a political intervention or endorsement. We do not involve ourselves in the political campaign taking place. But we are concerned and appalled with attacks on the character and integrity of a man who is a patriot and has served honorably his country. Whatever political or military disagreements one may have with the General, he has always been looking out for what he believed to be the best for his country. He has always been a supporter of our political institutions and attempts to paint him as a would be tyrant are but a smear.

Pennsylvania Campaign part 4


ERIE Friday April 19th

Alongside Congressman Not-Edwin D Eshleman Anderson toured struggling schools in Erie County. They discussed education policy especially regarding the expansion of education in Oregon under the Anderson administration, and he promised Not-Eshleman a major voice in administration education policy and writing that part of the GOP platform.

Anderson personally visited factories, speaking to Blue and White collar workers about growing paychecks and lowering the cost of living. He talked about his experience creating jobs in Oregon, good paying union jobs, and developing the economy while growing paychecks beyond the national average. He also touched on “Winning the Peace in Vietnam”, transitioning the South Vietnamese to frontline duties and putting American combat troops in increasingly smaller roles for direct combat.

Suburban areas across the state were being blanketed with newsletters and volunteers focusing on a law and order message. “Anderson will get violent criminals off the street, and citizens back to work.” In addition phone banking was implemented preaching the message. With the Pennsylvania GOP establishment supporting Anderson he was now able to take advantage of their phone banks and mailing records. Thousands of activists were calling Registered Republicans beginning at 4:00 pm and going until 7:00pm on weekdays. Weekends saw calls going from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Tens of thousands of voters were contacted and given the Anderson pitch, a record of growing paychecks, creating jobs, and streamlining Government, a plan to win the peace in Vietnam, and a plan to fight the crime endangering our children.

MCKEAN Saturday April 20th

In McKean, Anderson’s main meeting was with Congressman Not-Albert Walter Johnson. To Albert he promoted his electability compared to the Arch-Conservative Jackson and the far too liberal Jones.

Beginning Saturday the Anderson campaign included a new set of flyers and leaflets, mostly the same package of policy positions and profiles on Anderson but now with a new subheading “Endorsed by Governor Not-Scranton”. Profiles on Anderson were also sent to each Congressional district where their local Republican Representative had endorsed him, with the subheading “Endorsed by Governor Not-Scranton & Congressman (Insert local Congressman here).”

Anderson held a rally in the morning and in the evening, while the vast majority of the day was going from townhall to townhall.

“New Republican leadership can and will restore fiscal integrity and sound monetary policies, encourage sustained economic vitality, and avoid such economic distortions as wage and price controls.”

“Our objective is not an endless expansion of federal programs and expenditures financed by heavier taxation. The imperative need for tax reform and simplification will have our priority. We will also improve the management of the national debt and by doing so reduce its heavy interest burden on the American people.”

LEHIGH Sunday April 21st

In Lehigh County he had a meeting with the retired Former Senator Not-James H. Duff where he sought his guidance on environmental matters, specifically the proposed Clean Water Act. This was a meeting to show respect and flatter the old man as a respected party elder, not to say it was in any way feigned by Anderson.

“The cost-price squeeze has been accompanied by a dangerous increase in farm debt—up nearly $24 billion in the last seven years. In 1967 alone, net debt per farm increased $1,337 while net income per farm went down $605. While net farm equity has increased, it is due mainly to inflated land values. Without adequate net income to pay off indebtedness, the farm owner has no choice but to liquidate some of his equity or go out of business.”



BERKS Monday April 22nd

Governor Not-Shafer was not expected to be a difficult get, still a potential endorser of his status required a meeting as a show of respect. Governor Not-Shafer was a potential cabinet pick once his single gubernatorial term was done or a potential senate prospect should a seat open up. Anderson said as much, and that he considered PA a vital battleground for the next decade including the ‘68 election. A bit closer to home for the Governor, Anderson talked about their shared policies, ideals, and how revenue sharing would benefit PA in the field of transportation and highway spending specifically.

Glen Anderson on the Columbia University Hostage Crisis

It is the right of every American to voice their views and even protest against things they find to be unjust, but Americans also have a right to go to school unmolested and to be free of violent actions. The situation at Columbia University has gone far beyond any sort of peaceful protest and has escalated to a degree where academic buildings have been occupied by a small group of students relative to the greater student body. I condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms and encourage those occupying buildings on campus to immediately vacate the premises. Should they refuse to peacefully vacate the buildings in question they should be removed by the police.



A Full court press for the Anderson campaign on GOTV across the state, with Anderson personally in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Every single Republican voter was targeted with reminders to vote including information about their polling places and even sample ballots to show them how to appropriately fill them out. Many of these were handwritten postcards sent to citizens on various magazine mailing lists or who had provided information at an Anderson event. This was partnered with phone calls and activists going door to door in residential areas and businesses, Anderson supporters were encouraged to volunteer to babysit for mothers supporting Anderson so they could go out and vote. The “Anderson Girls” were in full force at college campuses asking young men to vote and supporters grove through the streets honking horns and playing music while streaming Anderson Flags and Banners. People were encouraged to drive neighbors, family, and friends to the polls and held small gathering across the state for people who had voted (Regardless of who they voted for), celebrating the Democratic process.

Anderson alternated between going door to door and doing interviews with local news stations, doing last minute voter persuasion and reminders to vote in general.

April 13th


Jackson would hold a rally in which he focused on the themes of law enforcement.

"As we look at America, we see cities enveloped in smoke and flame. We hear sirens in the night. We see innocent, law-abiding people being murdered by criminals. We see a drug epidemic that turns our youth into mindless drug-addicts. We've seen a complete and total collapse of authority and law enforcement. This needs to end. We need a President who will restore LAW and ORDER in this country. As President, I shall substantially increase federal aid to local and state law enforcement agencies. I will be creating a National Law Enforcement Council - with the Attorney General and responsible cabinet members taking part in it - just like we have a National Security Council and the Board of Economic Advisors. This will help us better coordinate law enforcement agencies across the country and allow us to launch a War on Drugs and War on Crime. I shall direct our Attorney General to launch a war on organized crime and drugs, to put an end to the crime and drugs epidemic. I shall also create a National Police Academy open to local and state police officers, which will provide the best of training and raise standards on police work. This shall raise not only the quality of those serving in police forces but also eventually their pay. I feel that many of our law enforcement officers are woefully underpaid for the important job they are doing. We cannot expect our police officers to handle difficult situations and put their lives to risk without proper training and adequate pay. In fact I would rather see us cut government fat that goes in the pockets of DC bureaucrats and use that money to raise the wages of those who risk their lives to protect law-abiding Americans. I shall launch a campaign in public schools to warn children of the dangers of drug addiction; I shall put an end to the toleration towards rioters; I shall restore a sense of security in this country."


Rural Counties
April 14th - April 19th


Jackson would spend time campaigning in rural counties of Pennsylvania, hoping to bolster turnout. He would talk about the need for security, repeating many of the same talking point as his previous speech. But he would also talk about his Christian faith, his belief in reducing the regulatory and tax burden, and promise to end the government's negligence towards rural regions. Aside from holding rallies, he would also visit shops, small businesses, schools, and hospitals. He would shake hands with voters and talk to them in person, attempting to establish an everyman persona and shed any image of distance. He would be smiling, warm, and even cracking the occasional joke. His favorite jokes would be ones about the incompetence of bureaucrats in DC. He would also relay his own experiences of growing up in a middle class household and the economic difficulties his own family faced, attempting to convince voters that he understood their plight.

Those visits would be filmed by a camera crew and used in TV ads to showcase the friendly, everyman face of Jackson. Jackson campaign staff would also point out that whereas other candidates prefer to talk with journalists or fellow politicians, Jackson focuses on winning the everyday people of this country: that he is talking with the citizens themselves and learning about their problems.

Jackson would hold rallies and focus on the themes of security, competence and experience. He would repeat his talking points about law and order, and then add about the economy:

"My vision of the economy is one in which workers and businessmen work together for the advancement of our society. Instead of redistributing misery, we will be creating new wealth."


"As President, I'll aim to substantially cut taxes for all Americans - but especially so the middle class and small businesses. That way we can unleash the greatest engine of progress and poverty reduction in human history: American private enterprise."


"As President, I shall put an end to costly red tape and overregulation. This type of red tape only serves to cost countless of dollars to the American people and to burden small businesses. Big corporations can afford the cost placed upon them by overt regulations. Rather, it is the mom and pop of the neighborhood shop that bear the burden of red tape, which drives up costs and forces them to raise the price of goods in order to stay in business. This burdens unduly the American worker, who has to pay more for basic products. It also puts the mom and pop store at disadvantage compared to big corporations. Politicians on the left who want more regulations and more red tape in reality want to eradicate small stores and to drive up the prices of goods."


"Current Social Security benefits will be locked in to rise with inflation moving forward, to ensure that our seniors are not unduly burdened by the inflation spike caused by the incompetency of the current administration. When inflation is brought under control, as President I shall be pushing for a measured rise in social security benefits."


"We need to bring inflation under control. Ending inflation means freeing all Americans from the terror of runaway living costs. We now know that inflation results from all that deficit spending. As President, I will balance the budget by cutting government waste, streamlining government programs and promoting economic growth. By putting an end to deficits and bringing down our debt, we will see a marked decrease in the rate of inflation."


"What we do need to do is to stop holding back against the North. I believe we need to bomb both strategic infrastructure in North Vietnam - with much greater intensity than we are already doing - and the supply trails that support communist insurgents in South Vietnam. We need to show the North that we are serious and committed to our ally, South Vietnam. That way, we can force the North to the negotiating table and reach an agreement for lasting peace in the region. I explicitly reject the idea of the use of ether nuclear weapons or an invasion of the North. I do not think those steps would be necessary and it is a smear by opponents. What I would do, is to increase pressure on the North - as I've already stated - while utilizing my connections and expertise as a former Secretary of State - who served in that post of eight years - to conclude a lasting peace that will safeguard Southern independence and bring our boys back home."


"As Secretary of State for the Davis Administration, I was the architect of SEATO and CENTO, two important blocks that have been cornerstones in our effort to contain Communist expansionism. I was also instrumental in putting into final form the Austrian State Treaty and the Trieste agreement. I met with many foreign leaders and handled a number of crisis, in cooperation with President Davis and other members of the cabinet of course. How many of my opponents in this race can claim to have the foreign policy expertise I have? This is not the time for experiments. I believe we need a leader who has experience in foreign affairs and can get us out of the current quagmire in Vietnam."


Jackson would also visit schools, hospitals, police departments, and small businesses. He would converse with the average voter, even if they did not support him. In fact, he would ask those who did not support him about their reasons and what they would like to see from him. He also cracked some jokes and tried to make himself look like someone with whom you could share a beer with.

Afterwards, later that evening, he spoke briefly before some journalists. "Speaking with my fellow Americans is something that all politicians should do. Any politician benefits greatly by hearing from the perspective of the average American instead of remaining shielded and away from reality on the ground. I spoke today with a great number of people from different backgrounds. I spoke with enthusiastic supporters but also heated critics, and frankly I have to say that I enjoyed the most speaking with people who oppose my candidacy because their criticism of me actually helps me become better and think of how to reach out to them; for the job of the President of the United States of America is not be a President only of those who voted for him, but rather a President of all Americans. And that's what I want to do. I want to unite all Americans."

"In my conversations with business owners, workers and costumers I've heard some common complaints; that taxation is too high, that regulations burden unduly the local mom and pop shop, that crime and drugs are becoming a problem, that the nation is divided. As President I will address those concerns. I will cut taxes for for the middle class; I will restore law and order; I will bring this country together. I've stated that as President I will be seeking the broadest possible consensus and that I will be putting an end to needless partisan bickering. We all need to work together for the betterment of this great country."

"This is the reason why I've avoided personal insults or attacks, instead focusing on discussion in terms of policy. This is why I've not been afraid to take action against people in our campaign who may have acted against decency. This is why I am not afraid of owing up to any mistakes I've made. No man is perfect. People makes mistakes. What matters is owning up to them and being honest with the American people. That is what my campaign is all about: honesty, patriotism and good governance."

"I myself have unfortunately fallen victim to personal slander; attacks on my record and questions about my own allegiance to this nation. All of this despite the fact that I served bravely - being rewarded with a Medal of Honor - in our armed forces and I led American troops to victory in foreign battlefields. Politics are indeed vicious. Some people may be asking why I am running. I already managed to become a top ranking general, a Governor and a Secretary of State. My financial situation is rather good, I would have to admit. Why bother to run knowing that this would cause people to attack me, to smear my name, to question my decency and patriotism?"

"I did it not because of any inherent desire for power. I've already had my fair share of it," the old General chuckled. "I did it because I care deeply for this country. I love this nation, and I truly believe that as President I can help fix the increasing problems we've been facing. I view it as a civic duty. It is a duty of every patriot to help his country in any way he can. I believe I can most help this country as President. I have lived a long life that has given me considerable expertise. Not many men can claim to have led American armies in Europe, Africa and Asia, to have served as Governor and as Secretary of State. I wish to use this collective knowledge to help our country move forward."

"I want to see the war in Vietnam to finally end, but without sacrificing our allies in South Vietnam to tyranny. I want to see order restored in our streets. I want middle class families to be aided with tax cuts and an end to the cost of living crisis caused by inflation. I want to see America be once more a shining beacon."

"If my desire to help my country leads to others smearing my name and personally insulting me, so be it." Jackson's eyes became watery. "I do not mind if my own legacy is destroyed by those who seek victory at any cost. I myself will keep running a decent campaign, an honest campaign. I will not engage in mud-slinging, nor will I be covering up subordinates who go against this desire of mine or refusing to own up to mistakes. I will be running a good campaign that will be honest to the American people and will be offering ideas and solutions. A policy-based campaign. And if in the end I lose and my legacy is tarnished because of mud-slinging against me, I would still be happy and considering it a victory: because I would have known that I had done everything I could for this country, to the very last moment."

Jackson would continue meeting with average voters in person. He would be visiting schools, hospitals, police departments, and small businesses. He would converse, shake hands, and try to appear warm. He was using all his natural charisma; the man had managed to convince soldiers to charge against enemies, often leading to certain death, he could convince people to at least get to respect if not vote for him. His main message was that unlike other candidates who were shielded or speaking mostly to journalists, he was speaking to the voters directly. He would address their concerns: some were asking if he would be gutting social welfare, to which he replied that he would only streamline existing programs and make them more effective by cutting fat but would not gut programs that actually aided people. Others asked him if he would cause nuclear war in Vietnam, to which he responded with assurance that there will be no use of nukes or an invasion of the North. Yet others asked him about taxes, and he answered that he would cut taxes for the middle class and small businesses whereas his opponents would either hike taxes or cut taxes for the richest only.

He also met with some college students who were clearly against his candidacy. He conversed about them about Vietnam and the draft, and explained to them that after the war ended he would seek to transform the American army into an all volunteer professional armed force, and that this would also be better suited in safeguarding American interests. "We do not need numbers," he said, "we need quality soldiers, who have experience, good training and good pay that can compete with the pay in the private sector."

Bucks County
April 22


Jackson visited the Washington Crossing Historic Park and paid tribute to the genius of George Washington and the bravery of the American troops. "As a military commander myself," Jackson said, "I can say that the crossing of the Delaware River was a remarkable military operation. I believe that it confirms my belief that Washington was our greatest general, and the men who served under him were legendary and brave people."

He then met with people in the county, visiting small businesses, schools, hospitals and police departments. He spoke about the need to restore law and order, the need to focus on increasing the quality of our healthcare by both producing more medical school graduates and attracting talent from Europe, the need to cut taxes for the middle class, the need to put an end to deficits, the need to bring inflation under control, and the need to end the war in Vietnam in a proper way. He also held a rally of supporters and then spoke with the local press.

He mentioned again that he rejected the use of nuclear weaponry in Vietnam and accused those stating that he wanted an invasion of the North itself of slander. Instead, he spoke about the need to bomb with greatest intensity the North and force them to a mutually beneficial peace that will restore stability in Southeast Asia. He spoke in length about his expertise as Secretary of State, and how he was responsible for the formation of SEATO which is the key pro-American block in Southeast Asia. He talked about he would use his foreign policy expertise to negotiate a peace with honor. He then turned to domestic politics and focused a lot on his agenda on restoring law and order, mentioning again the specific measures he would undertake. Jackson gave a statement to the press about the situation at Columbia University.

"The freedom to dissent is an important element of our political system," Jackson said. "It differentiates America from unfree lands - such as the USSR - where you can get landed to jail, or worse, if you dissent from what the government deems proper. Dissent can be an instrument of change, an instrument of progress. We are able to change things which are wrong by dissent, we are not frozen into them. But dissent can also be an instrument of destruction, if it is violent. Laws should not be broken and dissent should be peaceful. Violent dissent can be justified if there is no peaceful way to change things; that is in totalitarian societies. But America has a political system that allows for peaceful change. In a free society, there's no justification for breaking the law or engaging in violence."

"The current situation at Columbia University has escalated beyond reason. A small radical faction that does not represent the student body has occupied academic buildings. This violates the right of students to go to school without fear of violence or other actions against them. It violates their basic human right in education. We need to make very clear that such acts will not be tolerated. That violence has no place in America. That change can only be brought through peaceful protests or voting, but never through violence. I believe that the police should vacate those radicals from the premises, if they refuse to do so peacefully."

"We need to put an end to the tolerance the current administration has shown to rioters and law-breakers. As President, I will be implementing a tough law and order agenda where such acts will not be tolerated. I will aim to finally represent the great majority of Americans, the forgotten Americans - the non-shouters; the non-demonstrators. On March 1, 1968, Congressman Ronald "Ronnie" Truman of South Dakota purchase a group of radio stations across the Midwest and New England. Now, he has hired new staff members and hosts to run daily shows, play music, and celebrate American liberalism. Together, these radio stations are known as The Caffeinated American. One new show airs weekly and it is hosted by Congressman Truman himself. This show is known as "The Coffee House, with Ronnie Truman."

Truman: "Welcome back, listeners! This is Congressman Ronnie Truman of South Dakota's Second District, delivering you the news of the day. We will be joined today by the heinous Congressman Broussard of Louisiana and Liberal Republican Governor of West Virginia, Ed Jones. General Jackson did not reply to my request for an appearance. As promised, listeners, I have brought one of the most dangerous men in America to our show today... Congressman Broussard of Louisiana. Having gotten the best of a liberal Republican in 1960 with a humorous amendment, he has done the same to me quite recently, and I am sorry to say I fell for it. I have no hard feelings for the man, though-- no, not in this case. Rather, my hatred for him comes from the policy. I love a good prank. Congressman, welcome to the Coffee House."

Broussard: "Thank you, Representative. Mighty kind of ya for letting me on."

Truman: "Any time. General Jackson never replied to my challenge to have him on the show. I could think of no one better to replace him. Could it be that the mighty General is fearful of a liberal like me?"

Broussard: "That might be the case. He's never had to face an angry public. I face 'em all the time. That's the difference between me and Republicans. I am always prepared to answer for my actions."

Truman: "Does that include an angry public regarding the DC Statehood Bill? I will say that I'm not bad-- well, I was at first, but ultimately I'm amused."

Broussard: "Sure, I can. The D.C. Statehood bill in my opinion is idiotic. I am all for preserving the rights of states, you know this. What I ain't about doing is bringing a whole other state into the mix. We're talking more money going to certain appropriations, more people to clog up federal red tape and wrap it 'round our necks. They have their rights. They are no bigger than our smallest state. They are a blip on the map. If they want rights to representation, they shouldn't live in D.C. it has been a precedent for all of US History that the District of Columbia was an area that was neutral of political interference as our country's capital. Why all of a sudden do people complain? You live there, you know the rules."

Truman: "There are rules. Things like no taxation without representation. It's cheaper to make DC or, say, Puerto Rico a state than it'd be to merge them with existing states. The bill also sets aside land to serve as the independent, non-partisan federal district."

Broussard: "I disagree, D.C. isn't big enough of an area to be recognized as a state."
"I would say, Louisiana wouldn't recognize them."

Truman: "It meets all of the minimum requirements imposed by the Constitution for statehood."

Broussard: "Well, the colored population have been trying to make a black state for Black Power. I have the same oppositions."

Truman: "So, if D.C. was majority white, would you support statehood?"

Broussard: "Nope, I couldn't care less. I was making a comparison to the Black Panther's movement of Black Power."

Truman: "How would you handle the issue, then?"

Broussard: "I'd split D.C. up between surrounding states. We have an even number of fifty for states, why make it fifty-one?"

Truman: "What about Puerto Rico? Or why not balance it out by making both states?"

Broussard: "No, I don't believe in any more states."

Truman: "How would you handle our territories, then, if they issue requests for statehood?"

Broussard: "Tell them that we are the boss and they do what we say. If they don't like it, then they ought to revolt."

Truman: "...are you saying they should start revolutions, Congressman?"

Broussard: "Yes sir. If they don't like the way we handle things, then they can damned well revolt. We'll go in there and show 'em who is boss."

Truman: "That seems... a bit radical."

Broussard: "You think revolutions are radical? Do you think us leaving Great Britain was radical? Do you think the principles of the building blocks of our nation are radical in practice?"

Truman: "No; rather, I would say that we would be hypocritical by not allowing the people to choose their own government. America made its choice in 1776."

Broussard: "We wanted to do that in 1860, look what happened to us. It would be hypocritical to not do the same thing to the territories if they tried to do what we southerners did."

Truman: "Fair point. But those that seceded were states, not territories."

Broussard: "You're right, but what is the difference in principle?"

Truman: "Texas chose to join the Union, did it not? Hawaii sent a request, didn't they? Why should we deny Puerto Rico that right? Guam? Mariana?"

Broussard: "Of course Texas and Hawaii and Alaska did. I have major issues with Puerto Rico, Guam, and Mariana in the regard that the American population there is extremely low. I mean culturally American, ethnically American, and so forth. It takes years for a territory to assimilated, those areas are not there yet."

Truman: "And if they should ever come to be culturally American, as you say, then would you be willing to admit them as states?"

Broussard: "Why not? They are all large enough in my opinion."

Truman: "This seems like quite the flip-flop back and forth, Congressman, but there are other matters to discuss... Senator Yakobsky is likely to win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot. Your thoughts?"

Broussard: "Flip-flop my foot. Anywho, Senator Yakobsy is a good man. A fellow New Dealer. We have fundamental agreements on economic practices, but socially, we couldn't be more different than a ditch to a doorknob. I support my buddy Noble to fight for the Noble cause of our country, but I know that the south would be safe under Matis as well."

Truman: "Do you have any idea who he'll tap to serve as his vice president?"

Broussard: "No, I was hoping it would be a Southerner. He's got some pretty liberal social stances, but I think a southerner on the ticket would balance him out. I'd like to say me or maybe Senator McHale or even the man Noble himself would get the offer. That's all my opinion of course. He'll likely pick someone more moderate, but out of all people, I trust Senator McHale to go forth as a moderate."

Truman: "If it had to be a southerner, I'd tap Terry Sanford of former Senator Al Gore. Across the aisle, Republicans are, as always, a hot mess. Jackson's won two of the primaries, and he looks like he'll win Pennsylvania, but the race is still close, even with Governor Jones in the race now. What do you think about the state of the GOP primary, who do you think will be nominated, and who do you think their veep choice will be?"

Broussard: "Jones is a joke, Anderson is a joke and Jackson is a hero. That statement should say enough. In regards to his vice, I'd hope that big-mouthed woman from Maine, Maggie Chase, I hope she'd hop on the ticket so the General could lose any and ALL credibility that he has left after such a terrible economic platform."

Truman: "I think we're looking at a contested convention with Anderson as a compromise candidate. If Jackson's nominated, though, I believe that Jones might do what Burke did and endorse Yakobsky-- it's great to see liberals uniting across party lines."

Broussard: "I'm worried for the country. Listen, we had big daddy cat Davis up in the big house for eight years. Sure, he helped the people of the nation. Then we had Connor, rest his soul. Now, we have Lauderdale who's a wannabe southerner. We can't get any worse. Connor gave us the Bay of Pigs, Davis gave us a recession, and Lauderdale gave us a goddamn war."

Truman: "What do you think would improve the nation?"

Broussard: "We need an educated man with the know-how and knowledge to keep us on a path of success. We need progressive economic policy, we need a strong and steady hand to guide us as a wartime leader. I have all of those pros of course, but I ain't made for the White House. I'm made for Lafayette, Louisiana. Besides, I'ma humble man."

Truman: "Do you support withdrawing from the war?"

Broussard: "I support bringing our boys home. Not withdrawing completely. I would support giving aid in the form of weaponry and such, but our boys need to come home."

Truman: "I'm glad we can agree on that much. Last question before we take a short break and bring in Governor Jones... Have you considered seeking higher office within your native Louisiana through either a Senate or Govenor bid?"

Broussard: "I have worked hard to rise in the ranks of the House. I think eventually I might retire in the Governor's mansion."

Truman: "Thank you for being here, Congressman. We'll return with Governor Jones after these messages."

Truman: "We're back, viewers, with the liberal heir apparent of Senator Armstrong Burke in the Republican primary. Days away from the Pennsylvania primary, Governor Ed Jones is an unlikely candidate that's taken up the torch to keep the flame burning, to use Burke's preferred metaphor. Welcome to the Coffe House, Governor."

Edward: "Thank you for the invitation, Mr. Truman."

Truman: "You held a large rally yesterday with lots of supporters and lots of endorsers-- Burke, Schaffer, Whalley, Scranton-- who has, in a way, followed Burke's path by endorsing multiple candidates. Do you think that you've united the liberal base like Senator Burke had prior to his stroke?"

Edward: "I think I have, I think that we can get our movement in the mainstream. Glen is a heavy moderate candidate and I think if he were to lose any primaries and I won them, I think he'd be willing to send that moderate support my way. We could create a powerhouse of liberal Republicans."

Truman: "Do you think that your liberalism can truly overpower Jackson's conservatism after how 1964 went?"

Edward: "I think so. 1964 showed the conservatives that the moderates and liberals were a large part of the party and we are strong and united."

Truman: "Yes, that's true; they handed Lauderdale a landslide election, after all. Your best bet at being nominated is in a contested convention. If one were to take place and you were nominated, how would you unite your party? Who is your choice for vice president?"

Edward: "I can't really say at this point in time, but likely someone to my right so my administration represented the whole party."

Truman: "Someone like Anderson, maybe? Or more in line with someone like, say... Senator Dirksen?"

Edward: "I can't really say at this time."

Truman: "Why did you decide to run, and have you asked former Vice President Nelson for his endorsement?"

Edward: "I decided to run because I ran with Robert back in 1960 as you know, and we faced a terrible loss. Robert and I continue to have a good relationship and I have asked for his endorsement because I think we could win this year and put 1960 in the past and energize and motivate our movement and put this somewhat depressing administration behind us as well. I want him in my administration, and I value his opinions and advice. He is the next best thing to Davis, and he needs to be involved in any Republican admin going forward."

Truman: "Do you have a preferred place for him in your administration?"

Edward: "I want him in my cabinet somewhere, possibly next to the green beans or tomato soup. In all seriousness, I don't want to release any names for specific spots just yet. That isn't to say he can't possibly be on my shortlist, also."

Truman: "Would you place Democrats in your Cabinet?"

Edward: "I can't say for certain. As I said, everything is sort of touch and go at this point. Everything other than policy is a bit wishy-washy at the moment."

Truman: "What policies are you focusing on during your campaign?"

Edward: "Civil Rights legislation, Anti-Corruption legislation, Education Reform, Criminal, and Police Reform as well as Poverty and Unemployment. President Davis said it best back in '59, 'As the last year of this decade, we should think harder now, more than ever, as to what we want America to be.' that is something that we should think about. We are moving into a new era of equality, reform, and prosperity. Look, I want the United States to move into the new era in a positive manner. We want to go back to the good old days. Not with tax hikes on everyday Americans like my opponent Governor Anderson supports, and definitely not with the somewhat confusing economic policy proposed by my other opponent General Jackson."

Truman: "What about Taft-Hartley? One of your best-known supporters, Senator Burke, advocates its repeal. Where do you stand?"

Edward: "Taft-Hartley is an incredibly restrictive act that limits the power of labor unions. I would support creating a bipartisan exploratory committee to see what exactly is the best decision for the whole country in regards to the number of power unions have."

Truman: "What are your healthcare plans?"

Edward: "We need to reform Medicare and Medicaid and open up more access to people to better fight poverty. It is a new program, and we will have to see how it works out in the coming years before we make any permanent, possibly life-altering decisions for many people."

Truman: "How do you feel about universal healthcare?"

Edward: "Universal Healthcare is a bit of a stretch to me, I don't know if I could support that. I like the idea of it, but I don't find it realistic. "

Truman: "Under what circumstances would you expand Medicare and Medicaid?"

Edward: "As I said, I want Medicare and Medicaid to help the poor and the elderly. If it is determined that they don't do enough to help, then I will expand them in a heartbeat. The American people need good Healthcare even if they can't afford privatized Healthcare. "

Truman: "Where do you stand on DC statehood?"

Edward: "The DC Statehood bill that was killed in the House was a bill that had the opportunity of promoting civil rights, and citizens' rights, to a group of people who deserved them."

Truman: "Several members of the Senate have announced they will amend the bill. Do you expect it to pass?"

Edward: "I think so. What happened in the house was common Dixiecrat trickery. That's all it was. The bill will pass in the Senate and go back to the house where it will pass again. No doubt about it. "

Truman: "Before we end the program for today, tell me about how you plan to carry on the liberal flame in your party."

Edward: "I will carry on the liberal flame by taking the Republican nomination. I will carry on the liberal flame by taking the White House, and I will carry on the liberal flame by acting out my promise to the American people and Build Back Better."

Truman: "What is the liberal flame for you?"

Edward: "The liberal flame is the symbol of a burning hot passion for change. Change for the better. Change for a nation where all are equal and where all are represented and everyone gets a slice of the American Pie."

Truman: "If a Republican is elected this year, I hope it's you; a bigger slice of pie for the people is all I've ever wanted. Thank you for joining me today, Governor, and best of luck in your primary."

The Battle of Three Governors: The PA GOP Presidential Primary, Part 1


Truman: "This is Congressman Ronnie Truman, reporting to you live over the radio waves for a special election report. Polls have now closed in Pennsylvania; Senator Yakobsky has won his primary, as expected, while the GOP is as divided as ever. I am joined today by a Republican Campaign Strategist, Mr. Andrew Peterson (Stuart Spencer), a man that has gotten dozens of moderate-to-liberal candidates elected in his time. Welcome, Andrew."

Peterson: "It's great to be here, Ronnie. Watching these results come in, a few things are putting me off-- namely the record-breaking turnout of over one and a half million Pennsylvanians. We've got a map here with us that we're updating as new batches of votes come in, and right now, most of that map is liberal blue-- the color that we've chosen for Governor Jones. General Jackson is ruby red while Governor Anderson is odds-on orange. I think that Anderson is likely to come out the victor-- thus the color name-- but if he doesn't, I think Anderson will blame Jones for being a spoiler. No candidate gets a majority of the popular vote tonight."

Truman: "I can agree with that much, though I think Jackson has a stronger chance of victory. This is going to be a close state, I don't care what the polls say-- this is going to come down to the wire. After all, sources say he used a large amount of his funding here at the last minute to attack Governor Anderson... Ah! The first big batch of votes has come in..."

Truman: "Well, it looks like Governor Jones is taking an early lead. Sources say that most of these votes are coming from Allegheny County and its surrounding areas, and these are expected to go to him by decent margins, according to our internal polls. Senator Armstrong Burke spent a lot of time here in the final days of the campaign on behalf of Governor Anderson and Governor Jones."

Peterson: "This is good news for Anderson and better news for Jackson; Jones doing this well this early on indicates that he might not do as well in the Eastern two-thirds of the state. This is a pretty limited data chunk to look at, though, but unless Jones can keep his margins high and pick up Lehigh, Philadelphia, Luzerne, and Erie Counties, I'm not sure he can pull this off. Jackson, though, is the man to beat."

Truman: "We go now to our first caller of the night, the manager for the Anderson campaign. What's the mood at the Anderson HQ tonight, Joseph?"

Dan Joseph: "Well as you know we were 11 points behind in the last point, given the massive resources of the Jackson campaign any performance over about 40% we'd be happy with and would consider a mandate to continue fighting for the nomination. We are cautiously optimistic."

Truman: "Do you think that if you lose, or win with less than 40%, that Governor Jones will have acted as a spoiler to your campaign?"

Dan Joseph: "He's just another American expressing his views and seeking the nomination in a fair contest; Governor Anderson and I don't believe he's a spoiler he has a right to seek the nomination, it's up to voters to determine if it's worth trying to support his campaign if he doesn't have a realistic path forward."

Truman: "Anything to add, Andrew?"

Peterson: "Mr. Joseph, this is Andrew Peterson (Stuart Spencer) here with Congressman Truman. Your campaign has withdrawn from Massachusetts, so you don't get another primary chance until May 7. Why did you decide to withdraw from Massachusetts?"

Truman: "This is Congressman Ronnie Truman, reporting to you live over the radio waves for a special election report. Republican Campaign Strategist, Mr. Andrew Peterson (Stuart Spencer), and I have already been able to call Pennsylvania's Democratic Primary solidly in favor of Senator Yakobsky. The GOP vote is slow to come in, however, largely due to record turnout. Andrew, what do you make of this?"

Peterson: "This race is only narrowing up, Ronnie, and it's only going to get narrower from here. I think we've got the vast majority of the Jones vote that we're going to get until Philly County sends their results in. Right now, it's too early to call and too close to call, with under 50% of the vote in. I think Jones and Anderson have split up the western vote enough for a potentially Jackson win, but I still think that Anderson will pull this off. Jackson holds a solid lead as we've gotten a lot of Northern and Central Pennsylvania in, but it's going to be close-- mark my words."

Truman: "Let's check those results now before going into our next caller."

Truman: "Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the Anderson campaign withdrew from the state weeks ago-- before Senator Burke dropped from the race. Following what is expected to be a blowout victory for the Jones campaign in that state, what is the game plan moving forward?"

Grimes: "We plan to keep the Liberal Flame burning, and with a victory in Massachusetts with moderates and liberals on our side, we plan to attract more of the Anderson voters to hopefully create a new legion of Republicans against the radical extremism of those further right. We will Build Back Better."

Truman: "Do you think that liberals like Senator Burke will withdraw their endorsements of Anderson and give them solely to your campaign?"

Grimes: "I don't know. I think that would be a possibility in the case that Governor Anderson goes further right in an effort to get some of the ground that activists like Betty Lindquist revoked from him and gave to Jackson."

Truman: "Thanks for calling in."

Peterson: "Ronnie, if you're done over there, we just got a massive chunk in. This is incredible, what we're looking at here-- absolutely insane."

Our campaign is one that is inclusive and aims to build a broad coalition to bring meaningful change to this country. So we are confident that the final results will favor the Jackson campaign."

Truman: "How does the campaign expect to fare in Massachusetts?"

Anderson: "I am not going to lie or sugarcoat things. Massachusetts will be a difficult state. But I believe we can do well there. One thing our campaign is not doing is believing that because we did well in a previous state, we will necessarily do well in the next primary state. Instead, we campaign in each state with the same vigor as we did at the start of our entire campaign. We do not rest, we do not allow past successes to make us arrogant."

Jackson spoke to journalists and TV before the other candidates did as final results were coming in, in order to maximize his domination of late night coverage.

"I want to thank the people of Pennsylvania for their wonderful response to our message and their support for our campaign. We managed to surpass all expectation and do exceptionally well in a state where all analysts predicted we would do badly. This shows the strength of our movement: a movement to restore law and order, to cut taxes and end the cost of living crisis, to end the war in Vietnam with honor, to restore America's prestige.

I want to thank everyone who participated in our elections, but most of all those who supported me and voted for me. I would also like to thank all volunteers and staff of our campaign who worked hard to spread our message in Pennsylvania. Without them, we wouldn't have done so well in this state nor would our movement had managed to spread like wildfire.

Together, we can bring real change in this country. We will put an end to overtaxation. As President, I'll aim to substantially cut taxes for all Americans - but especially so the middle class and small businesses. That way we can unleash the greatest engine of progress and poverty reduction in human history: American private enterprise. I shall put an end to costly red tape and overregulation. This type of red tape only serves to cost countless of dollars to the American people and to burden small businesses. Big corporations can afford the cost placed upon them by overt regulations. Rather, it is the mom and pop of the neighborhood shop that bear the burden of red tape, which drives up costs and forces them to raise the price of goods in order to stay in business. This burdens unduly the American worker, who has to pay more for basic products. It also puts the mom and pop store at disadvantage compared to big corporations.

As President, I will bring inflation under control. Ending inflation means freeing all Americans from the terror of runaway living costs. We now know that inflation results from all that deficit spending. As President, I will balance the budget by cutting government waste, streamlining government programs and promoting economic growth. By putting an end to deficits and bringing down our debt, we will see a marked decrease in the rate of inflation.

I will restore law and order. I shall substantially increase federal aid to local and state law enforcement agencies; I shall direct our Attorney General to launch a war on organized crime; I shall form a National Law Enforcement Council - with the Attorney General and responsible cabinet members taking part in it - to coordinate this War on Crime; I shall create a National Police Academy open to local and state police officers, which will provide the best of training and raise standards on police work; I shall increase the pay of our brave law enforcement agents; I shall launch a campaign in public schools to warn children of the dangers of drug addiction; I shall launch a War on Drugs, instituting harsher sentences for both sellers and users; I shall put an end to the toleration towards rioters; I shall restore a sense of security in this country.

As President, I will push for a federal ban on abortion and homosexual deviancy. We need a moral uplifting of America. The time has come to turn to God and reassert our trust in Him for the healing of America. Our National Motto - 'In God We Trust' - was not chosen lightly. It reflects a basic recognition that there is a divine authority in the universe to which this nation owes homage. If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.

It is evidently clear to me that we need change, we need to turn a new page. When Americans are fighting and killing each other in our streets; when narcotic peddlers are corrupting our youth; when our boys are dying in the jungles of Vietnam for no apparent gain; when the President of the United States cannot travel abroad or to any major city at home without fear of a hostile demonstration - then it's time for new leadership for the United States of America. A leadership that will restore law and order, that will bring us victory in Vietnam, that will ensure our economy works for the many and not the few in DC, that will restore respect internationally for America. The time has come for us to leave the valley of despair and climb the mountain so that we may see the glory of the dawn - a new day for America, and a new dawn for peace and freedom in the world. Let us MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

We would like to congratulate Governor Glen Anderson on his win in Pennsylvania, and we henceforth request a recount in this primary.


After releasing that statement, Gautiere called his associate in the mafia and requested some assistance in the recount efforts. he then called Betty Lindquist to thank her for her support, during the call, she would agree to go on the campaign trail with Jackson in an effort to win more primaries like California.

Senator Frank S. Black pulled the blinds back in the living room as he walked over to the elderly looking television that was in his sitting room. A pair of faded blue arm chairs sat directly across from the boob tube. A small pair of ruby red slippers were slid to one side of the one farthest away from the television. In that seat was a fur coat and a small pair of white gloves resting on either arm of the comfortable device. Frank S. Black grins at this and greets his wife.

"Good Morning Anne. How did you sleep last night?"

The pair of clothes remained silent, not even the cry of his pet parrot Nelson could sway him from the silence that somehow vibrated out, with the only real noise being the artificial hum of the radiator alongside the wall in his home.

"How'd I sleep? I slept just fine, even if you were hogging all the mattresses so I had to take refuge on the floor again. I swear, woman, I sure don't miss your grabby hands on every article of clothing we have."

There was no biting, sharp remark that the former wearer of the clothes would have been known for, but Black flinched back just as if she had come up with one hell of a zinger on his ass.

"Me? Outside? No. I am a Senator. Women sleep outside, unless you really want me back, then we can sleep together, if you want. I won't even snore. Ok...that loud anyways..."

Senator Frank sat in silence as the coat shuffled down before Frank moved over to his wife and readjusted it.

"I don't know why I put up with you sometimes. Hell, I don't even see why we're still married after all this time!" Black screamed out-loud to himself, storming off into the small kitchenette, briefly stopping off to water the vase of dead flowers that sat along with two spots at the dining room table. Black got out the bread and the knifes and the butter and hastily crafted some breakfast, grabbing a cold frothy beer from the fridge and smashing the top of the bottle on the kitchen counter's side, breaking about half the bottle, half the beer inside the bottle and at least two bones inside of his fingers from the force exerted on himself.

"Huh. I'm bleeding. Well I'll be a son of a gun." Frank remarked as he flicked a drawer and began to bandage up the wound on his hand. He couldn't fix the wound in his heart, unfortunately, so that simply remained unfixed since 1944.

Black returned to the sitting room and flicked on the Television, sitting back in his chair and...realizing he couldn't see the screen with his eyes. Cursing to himself, he moved the chair a bit closer and was able to make out General Jackson giving a speech.

"Mr. Jackson, your opponents have accused you of supporting an invasion of North Vietnam that could cause a nuclear crisis. How do you respond to those accusations?"

"I want to be very clear," Jackson replied. "There will... land invasion of...Vietnam.....That way, the North will be forced to the negotiating table on our terms....steps to increase popular support for the Southern government. One of the mistakes... tolerating instances of corruption or human rights violations in South Vietnam. ... professionalism ... no holding back against our enemy.... any use of nuclear weapons, whose use I find ...necessary."

The Television cut in and out and in and out, much to the frustration of the Hoosier senator, who leapt from his seat and began to beat the Television's sides in the hopes of a clearer picture on the frame. More static came in through the speakers before a garbled vomit spewed forth as Black opted to cut his losses and unplugged the cord that housed the TV, shutting off the mismatched face of General Jackson, which by this point looked something like this on the screen:

"Oh Shit. Damn TV..." Black cussed aloud to himself, well aware of the fact that he should never swear in the presence of women, but couldn't help his frustration by simply not doing such a social taboo. Using the oldest known trick in the book, he slammed his fists on the Television a few times, pounding them, seemingly marinating the electronics and vacuum tubes inside such a complicated machine before his Television sparked, sending the 'deliverer of Hoosiers' flying backwards in shock from not wanting to be set on fire, which he heard was terrible for his image. Stamping out a small flame with his feet in rapid secession upon gaining his senses, he looked around glumly, his eyes spinning to where Anne would have been sitting.

"You idiot. I don't know why I married you."

"Bullshit Anne. We all know the real reason. The real-real... yes...that." With a pat down of his pants, the rattling noise of a cage brought a small smile to his face.

"Admiral Nelson. How's the fleet?" Black asked rather politely to his pet parrot as he lifted up the sheet that had covered it. Grabbing a nearby sack of bird-feed, he put a small handful and slid his hands through the cage, watching with glee as Nelson ate every last bite of food that Black had dumped into his hands.

"Good Birdy. Good Birdy."

"It's time I teach you a new phrase Admiral Nelson, can you say... 'Fuck You Jackson?'"

Black rewarded his pet with some more bird feed, well aware that he was going to need to clean out the cage again.

"Now, can you say Jackson?"

"Good, Goood Admiral Nelson! Who'a good birdly?"

*Squawk!* I am! *Squawk!*

"Good Birdy... Now, can you say 'Fuck you Jackson?'"

"Very good." Black's eyes felt prideful in having taught his parrot to cuss at his political opponents. Now, all he needed to do was eventually get around to inviting the General over to his house, and let him hear the parrot roar...er, in this case.. squawk.

Damn birds.

"Daddy has Senate business to attend to. I want you to be a big bird, and make sure my wife doesn't get into any trouble." Black replied kissing Nelson on the head with a slobbery wet kiss, which the bird replied with

"Mrs. Burke?" Gov. Jones solemnly replies as he hears the phone answer on the other end, waiting for a response.

"Speaking," Miriam says quietly. "Armstrong's-- I mean, my chief of staff... Bob... he said that you'd like to talk to me, Governor."

"Yes, ma'am." Jones says, "I'd first like to offer my condolences to you and your family and tell you how awful I feel for having your husband come to the rally. I genuinely feel some sort of responsibility for his....death, and I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to help you or your family in your grief."

"It's-- it's not your fault," she answered quietly. "He never-- he never did care for his own health very much. He would have done anything for his cause... and he did. He did everything for the people. When he-- when he passed, he wasn't even concerned about himself. Just the people. The cause. And our family. Never himself, that man-- everyone except himself. That made him the one Republican I've ever voted for in my life."

"He was a good man." Edward sighed, "I hope you don't mind me merging our messages. I feel like we were better politically aligned and I just want to help his legacy and values move on. If you care, just say the word and I won't mention him again."

"Please do. He-- before he died, he told me to add wood to the fire... You, like everyone else, are aware of how he described liberalism as a torch. I can't carry it as he could. I--" Miriam broke off for a moment. "I'm in his Senate seat now. I'm going to pass the last of his legislation, and add one more civil rights bill to it. The Burke-King Fair Housing Act. A great bill for two great men. And then-- I'm done with this. I can't do what he wanted me to do. Someone else has to, and it may as well be you."

"I-" Jones said, taken with emotion, "I am honored. I will make you and him proud. I promise that, Mrs. Burke. If you want to help and appear on the campaign trail to raise public support for your bill, I will happily allow it. I want you to be in the loop."

"I'd appreciate that very much, Governor. Really, I would."

"Alright," Jones said, clearing his throat, "I'm glad we can work together. Like I said, if there is ANYTHING your or your family needs, please call me."

"I will, Governor. Thank you, and best of luck in Massachusetts. My eldest son, Matthias, mentioned that he might hit the trail for you. He may contact you in the next few days."

"That will be wonderful," Ed replied

"I'll speak to you soon regarding the bill. Godspeed."

Phone Calls from the Campaign of Gov. Ed Jones
  • Vice President Nelson: Offer to establish a new office specifically for him as the Chief Executive Secretary of Communist Affairs, due to his great knowledge of Foreign Policy, and reminds him of Anderson's lack of policy knowledge and indecisiveness back in the 1960 republican primary. (basically kissing ass)
  • (Not-Rockefeller): Offer a spot in Administration, remind him of Anderson's lack of full support and trust during the 1964 Primary and didn't speak out against Silvermilk nearly as much as he could have, and rightfully should have.
  • (Not-William Scranton): Thank for support in PA, and ask for further support in the primary so as to fully carry Armstrong Burke's torch to the nomination.
  • (Not-Henry Cabot Lodge): Offer a spot in administration regardless of an endorsement, and vow to carry Burke's torch of liberalism and bring about unity in the country. Remind him of Anderson's lack of trust during 1964 Primary and how he didn't speak out against Silvermilk nearly as much as he could have, and rightfully should have.
  • (Not-George Romney): Offer a spot in administration regardless of an endorsement, and vow to carry Burke's torch of liberalism and bring about unity in the country.   • (Not-John Volpe): Reiterate message and seek further support.
  • (Not-Ronald Reagan): Float idea of a spot in administration, vow support as chair of Republican Governors Administration, and vow support of unions while Anderson raised taxes on the good working people of Oregan to solve a financial crisis he created.
  • (Not-Robert Finch): Promise spot in Administration, talk about similarities and about what modern-conservatism should mean. Ask to get (Not-Reagan) on board as well.
