2025: The Great Struggle

Image

IC||Map: Coming soon

The 2020s. A decade set to be nightmarish and a turning point in the history of humanity. Climate Change is the existential threat that must urgently be tackled in this decade, and humanity must learn to cope with the constantly growing population that does not look likely to slow down let alone stop growing anytime soon.

In Asia, the Chinese Dragon is emerging as the regional hegemon, pushing regional nations to choose sides between them and the West while internally the regime battles against resistance in Hong Kong and ethnic tension in the far West, while also pushing claims on Taiwan, stoking regional flames. In India, the nation is dealing with religious unrest and rapid economic growth and modernization as well as increasing tension along the border with Pakistan, particularly in the Kashmir Region. Japan has continued to cause consternation with its neighbors after proudly displaying the Rising Sun flag at the Tokyo Olympics.

In Europe, Euroskepticism is on the rise in many European nations. Russian aggression looms to the East as the security order of Europe is rapidly changing to meet the threat. In Spain regional tensions threaten to explode between Madrid and Barcelona while Poland and the Visegrad Group continue to openly defy the EU.

In the Middle East, tensions between Israel and Iran are at an all-time high. Adding to this is the emerging regional cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In Yemen, the civil war still burns as a testing ground for this regional cold war.

In Africa, ethnic and religious tensions pose a danger all over the continent. In the Congo, warlords fight over land and resources like coltan offering fortunes on the international market. In the Saraha and Sahel regions, remnants of ISIS and other organizations ravage the land and people. Ethiopia and Egypt are at each other's throats over the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam by Ethiopia. Yet there are lights of hope that still sparkle.

In North America, Canada is dealing with ever-increasing political divides much like the US to the South. Inside the US tensions between Republicans and Democrats have never seemed worse. In Mexico, the Cartels fight hard against the central government in Mexico City their corruption touches most parts of the nation.

In Latin America, the dictator Nicholas Maduro still clings to power even as his position is contested by Juan Guaidó. In Colombia, an unstable peace agreement official holds peace between the government and FARC.

How will the nations of the world tackle these issues? How will their pasts define their future, which nations will come out on top during this decade, and how will future generations remember this critical decade?

In this roleplay, you will take the helm of the nation of your choice. You have the ability to change the history of your nation from 2000 onwards within realism and with a few major event exceptions as well as anything stated in the OP or other applications.

National Anthem (optional):

Head of State: President Norbert Altenkamp
HoS Picture:

Appointment of the Chancellor and Ministers: The President officially nominates the Chancellor, who must achieve a vote of the majority of the Bundestag to take office. In addition, the President appoints, in his own, the Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs subject to approval by the Bundestag. The President also appoints the heads of the German intelligence services with the agreement of the Chancellor.

Promulgation of the law: The president is responsible for signing bills into law. The president is constitutionally obliged to sign every law passed in accordance with the correct procedure but can insist that a bill first be submitted to the electorate in a referendum. Such a referendum can, however, only override the decision of the Bundestag if a 2/3rd majority of eligible voters participate.

Foreign relations: The president is entitled to represent the nation in its foreign affairs, to accredit and receive ambassadors, and to conclude treaties in the name of the state. However, approval of the Bundestag is required to declare war, conclude peace, or to conclude any treaty that relates to German laws.

Commander-in-chief: The president holds supreme command of the armed forces.

Amnesties: The president has the right to confer amnesties for federal offenses.

The president names most officials (with the assent of the cabinet).

President can issue executive orders but those not dealing with defense or foreign affairs require the Chancellor’s countersignature

The security services, military, defense ministry, and the Foreign Ministry report directly to the President. All other departments and agencies report to the Chancellor who, in turn, reports their activity, etc to the President.

Head of Government: Chancellor Hendrik Wüst
HoG Picture (If different from HoS):
Image

The Chancellor is the Head of Government and a member of the Bundestag. They are responsible for most of the day-to-day affairs of the government and for carrying out the President's agenda. (This sometimes becomes an issue when President and Chancellor are from different parties but that is rare.)

Most Government Ministries and Agencies report to the Chancellor besides those dealing with Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Security. The Chancellor then reports to the President on any developing situations.

The Chancellor is also responsible for co-chairing the weekly meeting of Government which includes all Government Ministers, important agency heads, and the President who is also co-chair.

Legislature Name:
Party in Power (If bicameral note who controls each):
This Germany works a it differently than IRL. The biggest change is that the President has broad powers akin to the President of France or Russia. This change means that the Chancellor, while in control of the day-to-day operations and approved by the Bundestag, is primarily responsible for carrying out the plans of the President while both are from the same party very much like IRL France.

The Bundestag, or lower house, is dominated by the CDU/CSU - FDP coalition which controls 416 seats in the body.

The Bundesrat, or upper house, is composed of representatives from the sixteen German states. However, this leaves the majority in the hands of CDU/CSU and FDP politicians.

In addition, the Torando is upgraded to a Tornado 2000 variant to extend the platforms service life for the next several decades. Circa 2012, the Luftwaffe also starts looking into the idea of a completely domestic fifth generation fighter resulting in the Deutschevogel or DV jet which is entering service by early 2025.

Alliances (If different from IRL): Same as IRL

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

From 2000 to 2004, a series of scandals and friction from the merger of East and West resulted in a highly unusual period of political instability within Germany. This instability led many to push for reform of the system to move power into the Presidency in order to achieve a better balance between the Legislature and Executive branches. This resulted in the 2004 Great Constitutional Reform, Große Verfassungsreform in German, which saw the Presidency gain powers similar to their French or Russian counterparts, with elections under the new system to be held later that year in Summer and Fall with those elected taking office at the start of January 2025.
In these elections, Horst Köhler of the CDU won the Presidency with his party also going on to form a government in the Bundestag with the FDP under Angela Merkel. In addition, DASA is saved from closing and merging with Airbus by a bailout by the German government which cites national security as the reason to maintain at least one national aircraft manufacturer.

The next major change occurred following the 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia. This event led the government to increase funding and a bill was passed requiring that the defense budget did not fall below 2% of GDP. This period also saw the rise in the Beteiligung faction of German politics led by President Köhler. This faction, which had support on both sides of the aisle, advocated for a more interventionist Germany which would use economic, diplomatic, and military weight to work with allies and secure German and allied interests and security. This idea was opposed by the more reserved Angela Merkel.

In 2009, Köhler and the coalition government won the election for another five years.

In 2012, the faction led by President Köhler was successful in pushing for Germany to explore options to acquire or build its own aircraft carrier, which after a few years of debates and ideas, was found in the form of a modified British Queen Elizabeth carrier.

In 2014, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Bundestag at the urging of President Köhler, increased the military budget to 3% of GDP and rapidly focused on increasing military levels even further. In addition, Köhler used the reluctance of Chancellor Merkel to increase the military budget in addition to her policies of immigration to force her out of being the head of the CDU and resigning as Chancellor, and seeing Michael Kretschmer replace her. This move effectively ended the struggle between the liberal and conservative factions of the party with the conservative wing led by Köhler coming out on top. During the elections that year, Christian Wulff of the CDU won the presidency by double digits. Weeks later, the CDU/CSU-FDP coalition was reelected with Kretschmer tipped as staying on as Chancellor under the incoming Wulff administration. In addition, the Bundestag shifted to keep nuclear power plants open and explore increased supplies of hydrocarbons from Norway and other nations in order to ween off of dependency on Russia. This policy is supported by the German population who realize the danger of dependency on Russia.

In 2015 the German government helped pioneer the Minsk Accords between Russia and Ukraine. As part of this deal, the limitations that had been imposed on the German military were removed which led the Bundestag to further increase recruitment into the armed services as Germany experienced a further normalization of its armed forces in society. Later in the year, the Wulff administration also started growing more openly critical of the PRC citing its aggression under Xi Jinping and the growing threat they posed to nations in the Asia Pacific region.

In 2019, President Wulff and the CDU/CSU - FDP coalition was all reelected to power. Chancellor Kretschmer continues on in his role.

In 2020, the Bundestag joins the US in banning Huawei equipment in Germany and implements a stricter oversight of foreign, non-EU, technology used within Germany. In addition, the German Navy commits to joining US-led Freedom of Navigation missions.

In 2024, Norbert Altenkamp of the CDU wins the Presidential election alongside another majority of the CDU/CSU - FDP coalition. However, Kretschner indicated that he wished to step down as Chancellor and thus was replaced by Hendrik Wüst. Later that year, the German Navy enters the FGS Theodor Heuss aircraft carrier into active duty.

Legislature Name: National Council (People's Council of Turkmenistan [upper house], Assembly of Turkmenistan [lower house])
Party in Power (If bicameral note who controls each):

People's Council of Turkmenistan:

The People's Council of Turkmenistan consists of 56 members, 48 elected from the five provinces and the capital city of Ashgabat, and 8 appointed by the president. Members must be independent and not belong to any political party.

Assembly of Turkmenistan:

The Assembly of Turkmenistan has 125 members, elected in single-seat constituencies using a FPTP system for a five years term.

Government:

Democratic Party of Turkmenistan - 31 seats - big tent - Turkmen nationalism, social conservatism

A big tent party that brings together nationalists, social conservatives and economic liberals. It has no clearly defined ideology other than supporting the President's agenda. It is mostly supported by government bureaucrats, public sector workers and rural voters.

Liberal Democratic Party of Turkmenistan - 15 seats - center-right - Economic liberalism, social liberalism

The successor to the 'Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan', Liberal Democrats are positioned on the center-right. Their membership and electorate consists of middle class urban professionals, industrialists and professors. They generally support privatizations, tax cuts and liberal economic reforms.

Islamic Party of Turkmenistan - 13 seats - right wing - Islamic conservatism, social conservatism

A right-wing, Islamist party. It promotes the need for traditional social values and Islamic piety. Its support base comes from Islamic clerics and rural voters. Aside from strong opposition to social progressivism and support for Islamic conservatism, it does not have clearly defined economic or foreign policy agenda.

Agrarian Party of Turkmenistan - 11 seats - center - Agrarianism, social conservatism

A centrist party that promotes rural voters' interests. It supports increased investment in rural areas and government support for the agricultural sector of the economy. Its support base comes from rural, agrarian voters.

Opposition:

Social Democratic Party of Turkmenistan - 25 seats - center-left - Social democracy, social progressivism

A center-left party that mainly draws support from urban voters. It supports increased investment in education and healthcare, strengthening the welfare state and social progressivism.

Green Party of Turkmenistan - 16 seats - center to center-left - Green politics, green liberalism

Nationalist Party of Turkmenistan - 14 seats - right wing - Nationalism, militarism

A nationalist party that seeks increased investment into the Turkmen Armed Forces, and mainly draws support from soldiers and their families.

Note: Even though Turkmenistan is nominally a multiparty democracy, international observers and human rights activists note that the opposition parties are controlled by the government and offer only nominal criticism from time to time to create the illusion of democracy.

GDP (PPP): $112.659 billion
GDP (Nominal): $42.764 billion
Currency: Turkmenistan manat

Military Information (If different from irl you must indicate that here): Turkmen Armed Forces

Alliances (If different from IRL):

Turkmenistan is a member of the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Economic Cooperation Organization, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Islamic Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Food and Agriculture Organization, International Organization of Turkic Culture and observer member of Organisation of Turkic States.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

The 29th August 2022 Referendum initiated by President Serdar Berdimuhamedow shortened presidential terms to five years and abolished the office of Vice-President and reinstated the office of Prime Minister. In September of that year snap elections for the National Council were held and for the first time opposition parties won seats in the Assembly. This was hailed by President Serdar Berdimuhamedow as step towards modernization of Turkmen political life, while op-eds in international newspapers (bought by the Turkmen government) hailed the President as a democratic reformer. In reality, as observers noted, the opposition parties are controlled by the President and offer only occasional, weak criticism meant to create an illusion of democracy and political competition.

The Assembly of Turkmenistan has 125 members, elected in single-seat constituencies using a FPTP system for a five years term.

Government:

Democratic Party of Turkmenistan - 31 seats - big tent - Turkmen nationalism, social conservatism

Military Information (If different from irl you must indicate that here): Following the 2014 Russian invasion of Crimea, the Conservative government of Prime Minister David Cameron announced its intention to boost the British Armed Forces with a 50% increase in funding over a two year period, with the aim of boosting the Armed Forces to 280,000 standing troops and 150,000 reservists by 2017 and modernizing the equipment, vehicles and armored units of the Armed Forces. Cooperation with Germany over the QEII-class carrier program since the early 2010s allowed for the creation of CATOBAR carrier variants, with the HMS Queen Elizabeth II being commissioned as the CATOBAR variant and the HMS Prince of Wales as the S/VTOL variant.

Standing at 295,000 active troops with a reserve pool of 125,000, the British Armed Forces is equipped with modern weaponry and armored vehicles, with the British defense industry between 2014 and 2022 receiving increased support and attention from the government. As of January 2025, three Queen Elizabeth II-class aircraft carriers are in operation, that being the HMS Queen Elizabeth II (CATOBAR variant), the HMS Prince of Wales (S/VTOL variant), and the HMS Louis Mountbatten (S/VTOL variant).

Alliances (If different from IRL): N/A

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP): The 2015 decision to boost the British Armed forces with massive budget increases by David Cameron's government and the Brexit referendum that failed after the Government failed to successfully present a concrete post-EU plan for the United Kingdom to the general public played significant roles in the decline of the Conservative Party and its failure to win the 2021 general election, where Boris Johnson lost by a wide margin to moderate "progressive" Labour Party leader Rebecca Long-Bailey.

According to Gallup polls in February 2015 42% of the British public supported the measures taken by the Conservative government to boost the British Armed Forces. Prime Minister Cameron's government was criticized for 'preparing the armed forces to use military force rather than preparing the foreign secretary and our diplomats to use diplomacy first'. The sudden surge in spending and an NHS-related scandal sunk Cameron's approval rating, and in the May 2015 general elections, he barely won re-election by a slim 550,000-vote margin.

He resigned in December 2016, less than two years into his second term as prime minister, after he was accused of attempting to downplay the rise in foreign debt and a growing deficit caused by the surge in funding for education and the armed forces and a lack of budget cuts to compensate. Theresa May of the Conservative Party won the 2017 election by a 1,000,000-vote margin, defeating radical leftist Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Corbyn's shock defeat, especially as pre-election surveys showed a strong chance for a Labour victory, led to the later rise of the Long-Bailey faction in the Labour Party that would play a significant role in Labour politics in the future.

Theresa May's government also failed to form a concrete plan for a post-Brexit Britain as Cameron's did, and growing tensions in the country over the Brexit issue led to a failure by Parliament to approve any measures, and thus the subsequent failure of a secondary Brexit referendum. The failure of Brexit was dubbed as the failure of the Conservative Party, and in December 2018, ahead of an anticipated call for a general election as the Conservatives could not govern in minority any longer, Jeremy Corbyn was ousted in an internal election and Rebecca Long-Bailey, promising a 'moderate, progressive, modern, forward-thinking' Labour Party, ascended into the party leadership with 62.4% of the vote.

The 2019 general election would, however, lead to a narrow victory by the Conservatives and their new leader, Boris Johnson. Labour would, however, perform significantly better than it did in 2017 and in 2015, showing the efficacy and appeal of Long-Bailey as the party head. As a result, her "Rose" faction in the party, which opposed Corbyn's more radical "Working Men" faction, would grow stronger and more influential.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the Christmas Party scandals would plague the Johnson administration (as it did IRL) and, with slumping poll numbers, Boris Johnson would in September 2022 resign. A snap election would be held in December of 2022, after a short interim prime ministership by Dominic Raab in the interim, with the Labour Party winning a convincing 51.2% of the vote, defeating the Conservatives in an expected landslide victory. Rebecca Long-Bailey would shortly after ascend to the premiership.

Her governance has been characterized by moderate, progressive, pro-EU politics. She has called for and secured a 'stable Westminster' and 'a form of British politics that is peaceful and respectful', passed legislation to improve education, and support special education for the hearing and visually impaired, and has led the reforming of the National Health Service (NHS) to better prepare it for a second pandemic. Long-Bailey defended the 'basic civil right' to receive an abortion and passed the Preliminary Resolution on LGBTQ+ Rights of 2023, making Britain the first country to begin the process towards accepting fully the LGBTQ+ community.

Immigration was encouraged under the Long-Bailey government, and recovery from the financial issues caused by the Cameron government began in earnest as the country left behind masks and lockdowns. Prime Minister Rebecca Long-Bailey remains the incumbent Prime Minister, and is expected to alongside her party see an easy re-election in the May 2025 general election.
