Rail Transport in Your Nation

Postby Gandoor » Thu Apr 28, 2022 8:28 pm

The invention of the modern railway in the 19th century is regarded as one of the most important developments of the Industrial Revolution. They allowed for both people and goods to be transported faster than previously possible, spurring the growth of cities and factories, allowing for perishable goods to be transported farther before spoiling, and more. While they did suffer a decline following World War II in the face of competition from automobiles and airplanes, rail transportation, for both passengers and goods, have remained important in many nations and have had a revival in many nations in recent decades.

The following questionnaire is about rail transportation, its history, and its current status within your nation.

  • What railway electrification system does your nation use? AC 20-25kv at 50hz
  • Does your nation have higher-speed or high-speed rail? Yes, there are two high-speed lines, one running from Whakaara to Tamaki-tonga (traversing the length of Marangawhenua) and one running from Tamaki-raki to Rakipa (traversing the lower half of Moanapapa).

General Questions About Railways in Your Nation
  • Does your nation have railways? Yes
  • Is the railway system in your nation nationalized, privatized, or a combination of both? There is a federally-owned company that owns and operates the large part of the nation's standard gauge railways, and almost all intercity trains; but there are also a large number of smaller companies, mostly operating branch lines or narrow gauge networks. These smaler companies are owned and controlled by the cantons (states).
  • What railway gauges are used in your nation? 1435mm standard gauge and 1000mm narrow gauge are the most common. There are a few that use custom gagues (mainly small mountain or industrial railways).
  • What powers locomotives in your nation? Electricity, on all but one line.
  • Is your nation's railway system predominantly used for passenger or goods trains? Both, but there are way more passenger trains across the country; however there are some trans-continental corridors where goods trains are more prevalent.
  • What is the total length of your nation's rail network? many 10'000s of km
  • What length/percentage of your nation's rail network is electrified? 99%
  • What railway electrification system does your nation use? 15kV 16.7Hz
  • Does your nation have higher-speed or high-speed rail? Yes there are many sections of the network that have been upgraded for operations at 160 - 200 km/h operations - they have become the norm for intercity routes (where topography allows). There are, however, only a handfull of purpose-built high speed corridors in operation that allow speed of up to 275km/h.
  • What length/percentage of your nation's rail network is used for high-speed rail? The Statistics are not currently available.

Questions About the History of Railways in Your Nation
  • When was the first railway opened in your nation? 1839
  • What is the oldest operating railway in your nation? A 15 kilometre section of the line from Kingsshore to Ýrellgestad. It was opened in May 1839, having been contructed by the city authorities of Kingsshore for the purpose of moving goods from the factories at Ýrellgestad to the capital of the country. Services were expanded to passengers soon after.
  • What is the oldest existing locomotive in your nation, both preserved and operational? The oldest preserved locomotive is a small steam locomotive from 1856 named "Buttler". The oldest still operational locomotive is a 1870-built mainline steam locomotive officially named "Guadalquivir".
  • If your nation's railways are/were nationalized, when did this occur? Most of the early railways were built by private companies, the largest of which were nationalised in a total of five big waves between 1884 and 1901. The national rail operator "Estragoneese Railways" was establised in 1899. It continued to acquire smaller private/cantonal-owned operators well into the 1950s.
  • If your nation's railways are/were privatized, when did this occur? n/a
  • What was the historical peak length of your nation's rail network? It has never been longer than today.

General Questions About Railways in Your Nation

  • Does your nation have railways? Yes!

  • Is the railway system in your nation nationalized, privatized, or a combination of both?
Privatized, but there is one network owned as a property of a Parish's government. It is required by law to turn a profit.

  • What railway gauges are used in your nation?
TurtleShroom wrote:Exactly five feet, but all trains are mandated to be convertible to any gauge smaller or larger within one foot (AKA up to six feet and down to four), because the extensive railroad use often transcends international borders. Although this is partially because of TurtleShroom's anti-metrication and anti-international standardization nationalism, this is also because transporting cotton and Beef-Based Agriculture goods, like raw meat and live cows, are easier on a bigger gauge. It's more comfortable and permits bigger trains, as well.

    { OOC: I chose five feet because it was the broad gauge of the American Southeast for decades, until those Yankees pushed the standard gauge. Oddly, it later became the "Russian Gauge" because of their adoption. }

  • What powers locomotives in your nation?
All locomotives since 1960 AD are powered using diesel internal combustion engines.
Before that, since 1936 AD, kerosene-powered internal combustion engines were used.
Before that, since 1849 AD, locomotives used steam engines powered by kerosene. (These were not powered by internal combustion, but rather, functioned as boilers like normal steam engines.)
Before that, since 1836 AD, coal. For the first year of TurtleShroomian railway's existence (1835-1836 AD), they burnt wood.

Nuclear-powered trains have been technically feasible within the last decade, but it was scrapped as wasteful and too dangerous. Attempts to electrify the standard TurtleShroomian passenger and freight railroads to take advantage of its near total adaptation of nuclear power have been stalled in every corporate boardroom and government office in TurtleShroom. However, interstate compacts between Parishes, between noblemen, and in between are construction electric light rail railways and trams.

  • Is your nation's railway system predominantly used for passenger or goods trains?
Rail is the primary way by which TurtleShroomers travel. Almost all roads outside of cities, with the exception of the Postal Routes, remain unpaved.

  • What is the total length of your nation's rail network? For every one square mile of land area, TurtleShroom has one and two-tenths miles of railway.

  • What length/percentage of your nation's rail network is electrified?
Close to zero, excluding many uncompleted high speed rail projects being undertaken. The largest of these is a Parishional compact between Haizsylvania and the Capital District. Some cities, like Jonesboro and Swamp Outpost, has a small subway network, mainly in downtown to shuttle government employees, while Litlin is constructing a massive subway system in all of its sprawl and downtown.

  • What railway electrification system does your nation use? Six hundred volt direct current, overhead direct current for surface rails. Six hundred volt direct current, built into the tracks for subways.
  • Does your nation have higher-speed or high-speed rail? See above.
  • What length/percentage of your nation's rail network is used for high-speed rail? Aside from municipal public transport and some projects that Parishes and regions are considering privately, there is no real high-speed or light rail presence in TurtleShroom. Yet.

Questions About the History of Railways in Your Nation

  • When was the first railway opened in your nation?
TurtleShroom normally lags behind most of Nationstates when adopting technology, but railroads were an exception. TurtleShroom announced its intent to build railways in 1831 AD and purchased the blueprints and Domestic Production Rights for its first locomotive, based on the Best Friend of Charleston (called the "Dixie model" in TS), which was introduced into TS in 1831 AD. After the American version of the locomotive exploded in 1831 AD, they were more than happy to practically give it to TurtleShroom. TS built this model in 1831 AD, adapted to wood, and it exploded within a week, causing zero deaths but maiming the operator of the boiler. Over the next three years, that would happen five more times, causing nine deaths, before TurtleShroomian engineers figured out how to properly make a steam locomotive based on the blueprints.

  • What is the oldest operating railway in your nation?
Excluding trial runs on circular tracks and test routes within the city of Jonesboro, the first commercial railway was the Great Test Track, connecting Jonesboro to Crawz Ford. Starting in 1830 AD, it was finished in 1835 AD. It ran wood-powered steam locomotives until 1836 AD. The first-ever railroad of any considerable length was the "Trains Do Not Normally Explode Proof of Concept Track" (see below).

  • What is the oldest existing locomotive in your nation, both preserved and operational?
The oldest surviving locomotive constructed entirely in TS Is a wood-powered steam engine named Bessie, built using the Dixie blueprint and intended to circle Jonesboro as a proof of concept. Bessie was the seventh Dixie model train built and was first run in 1834 AD. The goal was to continually operate the machine six days a week for sixteen hours a day on the Trains Do Not Normally Explode Proof of Concept Track in order to convince the TurtleShroomian public that It would be safe to use, and did so until 1835 AD without incident. This eased most fears of the population.

Bessie would be retired in 1836 AD, with the advent of the first steam locomotive that did not use wood. This coal burning steam locomotive was finished on right before the end of 1836 AD. She was christened "Whoa That's a Lot of Smoke".

After that, steam engine detonations would be exceedingly rare. The boiler of "Whoa That's a Lot of Smoke" would partially explode in 1839 AD, injuring nine with zero deaths, but most of it was intact and the engine was rebuilt. A monument to the nine train operators that died to bring rail to TurtleShroom still stands in Jonesboro, though the statue was broken in three during the TS Civil War. It has since been repaired.

In addition to being the first non-wood engine, "Whoa That's a Lot of Smoke" is the oldest locomotive still in operation. She operates two days a week (Friday/Saturday), making five circuits each day with five stops per circuit (a total of twenty-five stops per day), on the original Trains Do Not Normally Explode Proof of Concept Track that encircled what was at the time the outskirts of Jonesboro. The engine was successfully relocated during the Civil War and would be reintroduced to the old tracks in 2022 AD, when Jonesboro finished reconstruction its devastated railways.

"Whoa That's a Lot of Smoke" was converted to burn oil in 1849 AD, two years after the discovery of kerosene was made known to TurtleShroom. TurtleShroom would successfully invent crude oil kerosene in 1851 AD, eight years before E. L. Drake made non-coal kerosene possible. Where most countries wouldn't adopt oil-burning engines for another thirty years, TurtleShroom did so immediately after it successfully synthesized kerosene, first from coal from 1849-1851, and then from crude oil after that. Every steam engine in TurtleShroom would be oil-burning by 1856 AD. They all used kerosene.

However, these oil-powered engines were not internal combustion engines, which would not exist in TurtleShroomian trains until 1935 AD as part of the Fascist Servant reforms. The first internal combustion locomotive would be built in 1936 AD. Approximately thirty thousand steam engines running on non-internal kerosene service passengers and freight in remote areas where profitability and safety risks are respectively low and negligible.

The oldest locomotive still used for everyday, normal commercial service is the "Apostle Engine", originally built in 1957 AD by the TurtleShroomian National Baptist Convention to shuttle missionaries without relying on schedules.

She was sold in 2000 AD, after over a hundred years of continuous Church use, and is now on a remote track connecting nine hamlets with one thousand inhabitants or less and operates six days a week, with four stops in the morning and four in the evening. The passenger payload is full almost every day and it actually turns a profit. Every six weeks, she is removed for full system maintenance and is replaced with a sister engine, christened the "Not an Apostle Engine", built six weeks later by secular railroad operators who used the innovative new model commissioned by the Baptist Church.

  • If your nation's railways are/were nationalized, when did this occur?
The Kingfish Parish purchased dozens of railway companies and thousands of miles of railroad between Max's Pass, Shroomville, Centriole, and Barryburg in 2021 AD. They own it as a state corporation and it is required by law to turn a profit. All other railways, excluding museums, subways, trams, and Heritage Railroads, are privatized.

  • If your nation's railways are/were privatized, when did this occur?
While TS railroads have always been privatized, the government had a Ministry of Railroads to prevent and regulate price gouging. The office was dissolved in 2010 AD as part of a streamlining project to reduce government bloat. As a bonus, this allowed more railways to be constructed faster and cheaper, with market-adjusted ticket prices causing more profits that can be reinvested. This said, the Ministry of Railroads was never very strict in enforcing its duties, so its effect on railway construction was not significant even at its most powerful.

  • What was the historical peak length of your nation's rail network?
Present day. The entire railway systems in Jonesboro, Crawz Ford, and Nuekular (and about two-thirds in between) were destroyed by the TurtleShroomian Civil War. This has allowed them to be rebuilt more efficiently. The rest of TurtleShroom's railroads

  • If your nation has high-speed rail, when was it first introduced to your nation?
See above. The first subways were laid in 1969 AD, as the Fascist Servant's last major infrastructure project before they were voted out that year. They would cover downtown-only networks in Swamp Outpost, Jonesboro, and Max's Pass. The last time the Jonesboro subwayw was expanded was in 2019 AD. All subway stations in Jonesboro were deliberately collapsed because of their extensive tunnel network that directly connected to the basements of government buildings, including the Chancellery Palace. When it was built, it was agreed that the network would be doubled in length, size, and stations. Following the model of Darussalam, slime molds were laid in mazes shaped like Jonesboro to test efficient networks. Existing stations were excluded because they were already dug. Surprisingly, most parties agreed to sell land for new stations... for some reason. Maybe the slime molds asked them?

Litlin would start constructing its subway network in 2014 AD, but that was halted by the Civil War until 2020 AD. They are expected to be completed, with subways extending all the way into the slums, in 2026 AD. The downtown subway, which connects the original city to the two rings outside its original walls, already has an annual ridership exceeding two billion.

  • If your nation has heritage railways, when was the first one opened?
The most famous and most often visited Heritage Railroad is the Trains Do Not Normally Explode Proof of Concept Track. "Whoa That's a Lot of Smoke" is the primary engine that is run on it, and that locomotive and its constituent parts and cars were relocated on the onset of the Civil War. The actual tracks were totally destroyed. This railroad, but not the train itself, would be totally destroyed in the Civil War. It would only be rebuilt, and Whoa That's a Lot of Smoke would only be reintroduced, in early 2022 AD. As of this March (at the time of writing), this ancient train has since resumed normal operations.

Heritage Railroads in TurtleShroom are rare, because there are over thirty thousand steam locomotives still in everyday use for routes with less stops and smaller traffic. Most of these are not internal combustion engines, which would not be used on trains until 1936 AD. Heritage railroads are generally where retired oil-run steam engines of notable size or importance are placed.

All steam engines still in operation do not service large crowds and normally run on low-traffic rails between small villages and hamlets. Whereas a normal passenger rail line will service thousands per route, steam lines usually serve no more than three hundred per route.

All trains built after 1936 AD would be internal combustion, using kerosene. The first diesel engine would be built in 1960 AD, and all new trains would use it after that. Factories still exist to domestically produce equipment and replacement parts for all steam engines built after 1880 AD.
Older engines rely on the huge stockpiles of steam parts from prior to that date.

The last factory to build parts for steam engines older than 1880 AD closed in 1982 AD. The supply of "new" (read, manufactured and not yet used) will run entirely out by 2030 AD, after which all steam engines prior to that date will be immediately retired. This will retire approximately five thousand daily used, commercial locomotives. Whoa That's a Lot of Smoke is the exception. Parts for that legacy are still produced as-needed. Theoretically, production of these ancient parts could resume, but there is no commercial motive to do the retooling needed.

Questions About the Current Status of Railways in Your Nation

  • Is rail transport considered on the increase, decline, or staying static in terms of usage in your nation?
Increasing. New railroads and denser expansions are being built rapidly to cover the explosion in immigration and rapid urbanization in Parishes like Kingfish. The last brand new model/class of locomotive engineered by any TurtleShroomian railway was built in 2001 AD. All others were upgraded or retrofitted versions of other ones, and such upgrades happen almost yearly.. By 2025 AD, an even more advanced locomotive will take over, consistent of a completely new model.

  • If your nation has privatized railways, what is currently the largest railway company in your nation?
N/A . No one railroad controls enough of the tracks to be considered the largest, as they differ by mere hundredths of a percent. Whereas TS usually permits and even encourages monopolies, railroads are cutthroat in competitiveness (aided by the almost non-existence charges to use diesel and kerosene due to an abundance of oil). As of 2022 AD, the price of gasoline is currently one Hay Penny per gallon (TS0.005).

  • How many passengers per year use your nation's railways? The actual amount of trips taken per passenger, when combined, number in the many trillions.

  • What is the modal share of passenger rail transport in your nation? Approximately seventy-nine percent of all passenger transportation in TurtleShroom is done by rail. The remaining percent is performed by buses.

  • What is the busiest passenger railway station in your nation? How many people does it handle per day?
The busiest passenger rail station is Litlin's Oriental Hall Train Nexus Station, built in 2012 AD to replace the clapboard stations for what was once a town of about sixty thousand TurtleShroomers. It is the core station in downtown Litlin, built directly behind Litlin's first clapboard railway station (which it uses as an entryway to process ticket holders).

However, this station is the largest by volume using it. General Questions About Railways in Your Nation
  • Does your nation have railways? Yes
  • Is the railway system in your nation nationalized, privatized, or a combination of both? The Federal Ministry of Transport works in tandem with its local-level counterparts and private companies to manage and oversee its railway network by operating a system in which existing railway lines are divided into Tier 1 Areas of Operation which are determined by population density and local geography. Typically, each county is split into four or five areas of operation. For nationwide travel, Countesia is further split into three Tier 2 Areas of operation. To be granted a Tier 1 Area of Operation, railway companies must place a bid to the local government, which typically hands out 25 year leases. The process of being granted a Tier 2 Area of Operation is identical, but bids are placed to the Federal Ministry of Transport. For freight traffic, a similar system is used that permits rail freight companies bid for the right to use the whole network instead of select areas, but only for a allotted number of locomotives. To apply for more, freight companies are obligated to provide that they can afford it.
  • What railway gauges are used in your nation? After Countesias unification in 1820 the one of the first acts of King Blake II was to nationalise the small handful of operating rail lines in his newly founded kingdom. With financial support from the crown, Countesias railway network would expand exponentially to fuel its rapidly industrialising economy. Railway planners decided to utilise 1,450 mm as the primary gauge for Countesian railways, and was used by exclusively by heavy freight and express passenger and mail services. Narrower gauges such as 1,000 mm 760 mm, 750 mm or 600 mm were commonly used for industrial and non-express passenger services, and would be constructed largely in accordance with the workload in the area. In 1846 this would change when Royal Countesian Rail elected to switch to Standard Gauge as many other nations had, which would see all of its 1,450mm gauge rail lines be switched over to 1,435 mm. In the following years a majority of its other gauges would be converted over to the same. Some lines remained untouched as it was either not cost effective to convert it, or were already out of use by 1846.
