Ukrainian War Thread III: The Horrors

Postby Farnhamia » Mon Apr 04, 2022 12:56 pm

On 27 February the OP said ...
Farnhamia wrote:We’re four days into the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping, but it certainly shows a few signs of slowing down.

Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 23, 2022, and Russian forces have pushed into a sizable chunk of Ukrainian territory. Despite Russia’s initial success, Ukraine has proven a tougher nut to crack than expected and is fiercely resisting the Russian invasion, especially in the capital of Kyiv. Stories like the Ghost of Kyiv and legends like the Snake Island Crew have only bolstered Ukrainian resistance.

Ukraine, for their part, has successfully appealed to western nations. Heavy sanctions have been applied to Russia -- threatening Putin's base -- and Ukraine is getting arms and humanitarian support from multiple countries, including Germany, the US, the UK, Turkey, Italy, and Canada, among others. Schisms have erupted in the halls of the Russian elite, with multiple governmental figures and oligarchs condemning Russia's invasion. Despite Russia cracking down on dissent, protests have still erupted across the country in protest towards the war.

Will Ukraine hold? Will Russia take Kyiv? Time will tell…

Ukraine has held. The Russians have not taken Kyiv and they have, indeed, withdrawn from that city, leaving death and destruction in their wake. Other places in Ukraine have not been so lucky (if one may even use that word), places like Kherson and Mariupol. The US and her allies continue to add sanctions. Russia and her allies continue to breathe defiance, at the same time as Moscow speaks of a refocusing of goals on Eastern Ukraine.

Time will tell ...

I'm glad that Russia withdrew from Kyiv. Its a good sign for Ukraine. I'm hoping that Mariupol survives the war, the area has been devastated.

Yep. Ukraine has a strong military and brave citizens, along with the Ukrainian President being one of the bravest leaders we have in the world right now. The country has shown that the military is quite strong, maybe even more efficient then Russia's military, where as Russia's military has only shown signs of weakening.

Is it unreasonable to want this war to end no matter which side is considered the victor? I feel like the conflict and bloodshed dragging on is the worst possible option at this point.

They are deep in psychopathic genocidist territory. And it makes me all the much more depressed that we are still dealing with this shit in 2022.

Hello everyone and welcome back to the new carnival of depressing terrors that is the Ukraine War thread. What a sad thread to see get a new thread.

Here’s BTW the link to the Ukraine donations site, if anyone’s interested. https://war.ukraine.ua/donate/

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

I'd say it's unreasonable to let Russia win the war.

As they say, if Russia stops fighting it will be the end of the war, if Ukraine stops fighting it will be the end of Ukraine.
We've seen zero indication that a Russian victory would lead to less bloodshed, and plenty of evidence to the contrary.

i just saw putin's justification of war with ukraine a couple of weeks ago and it is terrible, it looks like that could have worked in like 1830, like "one time it was ours and now we are getting it back" like what ?!

Yes. It is very unreasonable to not give a damn about who wins, because if Russia wins, they will commit genocide against Ukrainians and completely destroy the Ukrainian nation.

Now, do I want the war to end quickly? Absofuckinglutely. Should this come at the expense of Ukraine's independence? Fuck no.

I agree that we should definitely avoid a situation where Russia commits a genocide in Ukraine. So I guess the question is, how to we end the war as quickly as possible in a way that has Ukraine in a good enough position to prevent that from happening?

I still wonder what the hell these "negotiations" are hoping to achieve. Because these people in charge of Russia sure as fuck won't have a sudden epiphany over what Nazism they are perpetrating because they are "talking" to the rest of Europe.

It would have to occur from inside Russia in some way.

Giving them all the military equipment they ask for and then some. Really the only way Ukraine continues to exist as a nation is if the Russians die in droves and their war effort collapses.

I mean, if we look at what happened in Bucha, a suburb just outside of Kyiv, where hundreds of bodies were found that were shot at close range, you can tell they are already trying to commit genocide. They are doing it in their occupied territories, and god knows what will happen if they capture the rest of Ukraine

If Moscow drops a 500 kiloton bomb on Kyiv now to attempt their "purge of Nazis" I won't be the least surprised. Disgusted, but not surprised.

I expect they hope for some kind of Hail Mary. You always have to try to talk out of a war, no matter how bad the situation is.

Flood Ukraine with every weapon they need plus spares and volunteers. Make taking the country so bloody, so harsh, that Russia runs out of either money, men or equipment, forcing them to stop.

It’s not pretty, or glorious, but necessary if we want to be referring to Ukrainian as a present tense thing in 2100.
