World Baseball Classic 54 (IC thread)

Postby Zwangzug » Sun Mar 27, 2022 4:51 pm

World Baseball Classic 54

Welcome to Zwangzug! After a mere fifty-one editions, we are excited to showcase international baseball's premiere event once more.

Format:

With, appropriately, fifty-four teams, there will be nine groups of six. The best three teams from each group, and the five next-best teams overall, will advance to the knockout stages, which are seeded by group finish followed by overall record. Ties for advancement are broken by overall record, head-to-head record (within groups), run differential per nine innings, scorinated playoff. Should there be a multi-way tie (usually within a group), it will be sorted from the top down: one team clearing the tiebreaker will reset other teams.

All knockout rounds prior to the final will consist of five-game series, scorinated two games at once; the final and third place playoff will be scorinated one game at a time, and are a best-of-seven and best-of five respectively.

Scorination will be around 9 PM Eastern Daylight Time (US) on the given days; this may be early Sunday morning in your timezone.

At this time, you may begin posting rosters and roleplays. A roster is a list of players on your team, along with any information you want your opponents to know about your team. Some good information to include might be your players' defensive positions and handedness, your starting lineup against left-handed or right-handed starting pitchers, which pitchers will start which games, or the name of your home stadium.

Along with your roster, please include some type of RP permissions box or statement to give opponents information about what they can RP against your team. An example box would consist of yes/no answers (possibly with elaborations) to each of these.

Choose my starting lineup: If you have a "default" starting lineup in your roster, can your opponent vary from this? (Injuries, platooning, whatever.)
Choose my starting pitcher: If you have a "default" rotation given, can your opponent vary from this?
Choose how I scored: Can your opponent describe the on-field sequence of events leading to outs and runs?
Godmod baseball events: "Godmod" refers to anything that is highly unlikely or impossible during a standard baseball game. Can your opponent assume freak statistical events?
RP injuries to my players: Can your opponent injure your players? Feel free to give restrictions like "no more than two players" or "hurt no longer than one game."
Godmod injuries to my players: Can your opponent RP godmod injuries?
Eject my players: Can your opponent RP about your characters getting kicked out of the game? Under what circumstances?
Godmod other events: Can your opponent RP events not related to sports? (Flash flood, mascot brawl, hot dog vendor ejected...)
Use DH at home: The designated hitter is a baseball position that bats in place of the pitcher. For the WBC, the home team chooses whether both teams will have access to a DH. This does not affect scorination, though ICly, games with a DH would feature slightly higher scoring rates.

(Despite pushback from the purists' union, Zwangzug baseball authorities have acceded to changes in the modern game. For games where neither team has expressed a preference, ICly the DH will be in play, along with the Ohtani rule.)

Please do not "reserve posts," unless you are the host nation (me). If you post a partial roster or RP and then edit it, there is no guarantee that the entire post will be awarded bonus. If you do this anyway, please TG me to inform me of the update, but also, please don't do it.

Welcome to Zwangzug! We look forward to welcoming your teams and fans. Click for giant map!

Please do not cause permanent harm to my characters or in my country without asking me first.

-Things to know: Zwangzug is a large and diverse nation with lots of silly chess allusions. (In more recent times we have branched out and now feature allusions to other board games.) Currently, our economy is under the control of well-intentioned but questionably-competent robots. Probably the easiest thing for foreigners is to get a temporary "ID card" and link that to a debit account; this will help you pay for groceries, restaurants, etc.

There are no automobiles allowed in the country, but a very extensive network of inter- and intra-city train transit will be able to get you to the stadium on time (hopefully). Many drugs popular in other countries are prohibited also, however, if you claim a religious exemption for their use, you can probably get away with a lot!

All of these stadiums are older than dirt (credit to 2007- and 2012-era Zwang for writing these names up, and saving them in places where they'd be just feasible enough to track down). However, we believe in the "Ship of Theseus" model, and most of them will have undergone many reconstructions/modernizations so that they are roughly up to international standards, while theoretically preserving the original location/identity.

102d: X Park is in a city known for being on the cutting edge of trendy innovations. They are archrivals of Bassabook in baseball as well as football and life in general. Their favorite board game is Scrabble, which isn't very trendy, except when literal zebras are involved.

Arlington: Paddock Park is found in the northeast, in a city that's said to be a good encapsulation of Zwangzug on a smaller scale. Fans avoid the wind and cold by travelling via skyways, and their accent often drops the letter "R" at the ends of words. Their favorite board game is Pandemic, although they'd like you to know they were into cooperative games before pandemics were cool.

Bassabook: Delacruz Field is found in the southeast, which is somewhat of a more socially- and religiously-conservative area than the country as a whole. There's a famous fountain in a downtown plaza that's a fun tourist site. Their favorite board game is Bananagrams.

Belpub: Fans are proud of Aganath Stadium, whose elaborate multi-deck tiering allows large capacities to take in the game, and has a luxurious press box for visiting scribes. Their favorite board game is Splendor.

Frischberg: Rise Stadium has elaborate floral decorations outside. Its deep fences favor pitchers, but the left-center wall has some weird caroms that allow for triples and the occasional inside-the-park homer. The city itself was once a religious haven and is now known as a large college town. Their favorite board game is Patchwork.

FTC: Zwangzug's two largest cities grew next to each other. The west side is traditionally known as "Merano"; fans are snooty and consider themselves cultured. The east side is traditionally known as "Bangkok"; fans are prone to rioting and making incomprehensible math puns. However, it's more common these days to just refer to the entire area as "the FTC" ("fraternal twin cities"). Their favorite board game is Mafia/Werewolf.

Chet Barzun Stadium, located on the west side, is named after the first commissioner of the Batter Up! Baseball League in Zwangzug, many aeons ago. East Side Park, located on the east side (fortunately), is home to a franchise that is historically unable to hold down a consistent nickname. They are currently known as the "Secret Squirrels," and thanks in part to Wenjie Liu's leadership of the national team, that name has stuck around for a while. But don't count on it lasting.

Hadiln: located near Spenson, eventually overshadowed by their upstart neighbors, and slightly resentful about it. Mepo Stadium has a lot of open space outside the park, perhaps an attempt at leaving space for further construction/stores, which given our economy didn't exactly materialize. Their favorite board game is Spades.

Inver: Historically influenced by the culture of Ferahgotopia, though not much of a presence these days. Salick Stadium has excellent groundskeeping and a lovely playing surface, but the internal structure can be a bit of a maze. (This has been slightly alleviated in more recent years by bright paint colors and photos of bygone seasons, but it's still worth leaving extra time to find your seat.) Their favorite board game is Great Western Trail.

Kerlagrad: Moore Field is found in the south, a region historically influenced by the former nation of Unkerlantum, and known for its Russian-language names. It is now more commonly known as being the home of a rather satiric newspaper. Their favorite board game is Codenames.

Logrove: Cormau Park, home of the Dolphins, has seats painted in bright blue and silver, with a few rows of violet just for the Violetists out there. Their favorite board game is Manila.

Noh Weir: a consistently small town that has been settled, then abandoned, by many generations of utopians. Some claim that Wee Field is naemd for a distinguished academic who hailed from the city, but it certainly applies to the capacity, which doesn't need to be very large for professional league games. International fans will have to deal with a lottery for tickets. Fans' favorite board game is Taboo.

Nuel: Eastridge Park is a bandbox, built to fit amid the fancy architecture of the puritanical "city in the valley." Their favorite board game is Citadels.

Spenson: the Worm Hole is the Zebras' traditional home, an incongruous mix of high-tech dome technology and a throwback manual scoreboard. Spenson's vast suburbs were the home of the space program after the modern country was created. Their favorite board game is Hearts.

Weegham: known for its terrible weather, the northern city resents nearby Arlington for similar reasons to the Hadiln-Spenson rivalry. Glieb Park is domed to minimize rainout/snowout risk, and has large outfield dimensions. Their favorite board game is Pandemic Legacy, although again, they're into it for the narrative and emergent gameplay and not because they actually enjoy global outbreaks.

Zwischen: Swainyo Stadium is located in the nation's capital. Visitor attractions include the "Ziggurat," the former government headquarters and occasional scene of inter-parliament strife. Their favorite board game is The Resistance.

From Rick Benson:

"There isn't really anyone notable in our group, other than that Dusty team. But the biggest noise they've made that I've seen is their griping about our association wanting to host. I think we can win the group, but I won't come right out and predict it."

Kriegiersien Nationalteam Baseball

Image

After the win of the Gold medal at the Olympics the Kriegiersien team started two times with amateur teams at the WBC. The results were as expected.
This time the best players of the 'Batter Up! Baseball League' Kriegiersien Top league returned.

The only player playing outside Kriegiersien is Sarah Strongarm, who won the National Championship in Cassadaigua with the Grande Mountain Huskies and is maybe the best and most successful player from Kriegiersien (alongside Leon Prince), but one of the few without Olympic Gold medal, as she played at the Olympics for the female softball team, eliminated early.

As always playing in Olympic black.

The South Americanastan National Team

After 2 years of early playoff exits, the South Americanastan Bears finally broke their exit streak in WBC 53. Unfortunately, they did this by not making the playoffs at all. However, the team is determined to reach the playoffs and go on a run this year, fueled by a change in the lineup with Frank Monteforte officially being named starter in Left Field and Catcher Jack Manning returning to the playing quality of his prime. The team now encounters a roadblock in their cockiness, however, with a group of players barging in on a press conference in the middle of last years group stage to pop a champagne bottle and proclaim that South Americanastan would be going to the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the team's on-field behavior has been a source of controversy, with Micheal Kelly coming under fire for not stopping the in-game banter and antics from the team, most famously during Game 2 of the first series against Sarzonia last year, in which Jack Manning would use his bat to imitate a middle finger directed at Sarzonian pitcher Mark Conroy, along with intentionally attempting to rile up away crowds across multiple games. When asked about it, Micheal Kelly had this to say:

"I was asked about this in the Aji No Moto series and I'll say the same thing I've said then: Boys will be boys. The psychological game is half the battle and these guys have been finding creative ways to win it. If our opponents don't like it, they can get thicker skin."

Concerns have also been raised about Frank Monteforte's mental and physical health due to his current service in South Americanastanian Angola and how active combat may affect his longevity. Micheal Kelly was further questioned about this during his offseason press conference:

"From what I know, Frank's doing just fine. The SADF is a particularly forgiving military to be in when it comes to that stuff and I'm confident he'll be at 100% for the tournament. On the topic of mental health, I don't think he's seen anything too fucked up over there, but we've got a great psychology staff that can help him work through it."

Sevendian roster for WBC54

What is a Sevendia?
Good question. Sevendia is a small, seven shaped country in Sonnel. At about 777,777 inhabitants, it isn’t a big or relevant nation. Sevendia rarely joins international sports, possibly because international sports don’t involve enough sevens to their liking. Everything is 7 in Sevendia. This is not an over exaggeration.

This is a meme puppet. Do whatever floats your boat. Kill ‘em, ‘slice em, dice ‘em, make them a farmer in remote Ko-oren, I don’t care. Go have some fun. (And no DH rule for this nation.)

Roster:

Coaching staff:
Seven-Seven Seventy-Seven (49)
The coach with the admittedly non-ideal name is responsible for all of the team. There are no other coaches. Due to the complexity of his name, he is mostly referenced as “91”. He is also the father of Sejal-Seven, the team’s shortstop. He previously got the team to 14 wins in WBC50, 13 wins in WBC52, 9 more in WBC53, and got the football team to 3rd place at the 7NC2, and the Sevens team to the final of the Bowl of the 6th Rugby Sevens World Cup, and probably more stuff I've forgotten. Yes, he coaches those teams as well.

Pitchers:
SP1 Sebastian-Seven Rottesven (38, L)
SP2 Sean-Seven Proven (37, R)
SP3 Seamus-Seven Muggeven (32, R)
SP4 Seth-Seven Soderven (23, L)
RP1 Sefton-Seven Dragonven (32, R)
RP2 Selvin-Seven Iöderhven (29, R)
RP3 Sequan-Seven Goghven (25, R)
RP4 Sevekus-Seven Ghoulishven (23, L)
In Sevendia, pitchers are always male. None of them are any good. Just throw them around how it is convenient for you.

Field players:
C Sela-Seven Loveveven (32, R) (this is spelled correctly (all the names are, trust me))
1B Sera-Seven Poven (40, R)
2B Seira-Seven Hulven (26, L)
SS Sejal-Seven Seventy-seven (34, R)
3B Selinda-Seven Uhlmeven (20, R)
LF Seanna-Seven Joudlven (40, R) [Sun City Flames, SNL]
CF Selena-Seven Gomeven (29, S)
RF Semanda-Seven Sevenvenven (19, R)
Field players are always female in Sevendia. This is the batting lineup, pitcher at the end. If they are forced to play with a DH, the pitcher does that anyway.

Reserves:
C Selvia-Seven Ähven (28, L)
IF Sebrina-Seven Juuven (39, L)
OF Seanna-Seven Sulsven (28, R)
U Selestine-Seven Donewithven (57, R)

Things you probably should know

All (adult) people in Sevendia are seven foot. Always.
In every sentence, people currently being in Sevendia are required by law to use all the letters of the word seven (e, n, s, v) in every sentence they say.
The answer is always seven. No matter the question.
Everything that could theoretically be seven-shaped is seven-shaped.
Everything that can’t be seven-shaped is also seven-shaped.
All objects are required to have a 7 on them, including everything.
Seven.

The Stadium

Seven (77,777)
Building a stadium of those proportions was a very bad idea. For most games, the stadium isn’t remotely close to being full. Seven, located in the capital (Seven) will host all of the games. This stadium is also built in the shape of a seven, with the short side behind the outfield and the long side going along the side of the field, about up to third base.

Good luck, and I’m sorry.
Seven

Chromatika National Baseball Team - The Outliers
They... Became the first Chromatik team to win any competition at the National Level? Then, there was a disappointing tournament, but still, Chromatika has one of the best teams around.

Starting Lineup
1. 1B Mattieu Gammond (R/R/32) Walstreim Stingrays (South Newlandia)
Fielder first, batter second, Gammond is a decent enough leadoff hitter but better served as a fielder who never commits errors.
2. SS Alisen Moyamoto (L/R/31) Elephant Valley Homers (South Newlandia) CAPTAIN
The most prolific baseball player in Chromatik history, Moyamoto can do it all - hit, run, throw, everything.
3. LF George Ducat (R/R/30) New Llama Wizards (Super-Llamaland)
The master of catching long balls that are would-be-home runs, Ducat moved to New Llama to play in the LPB.
4. 3B Edith Ponce (R/R/24) Vargas City Lions (Super-Llamaland)
After a good season with Hanai, Ponce moved to Vargas City and continues to provide good hitting.
5. C Laure Valle (R/L/31) Masmow Dragons (South Newlandia)
A very reliable catcher who loves to throw out would be runners. Laure is decent with her bat.
6. 2B Raitis Ranta (R/R/24) Rüsselsheim Blue Sox (South Newlandia)
Ranta was the MVP for the Pilots, who turned around a rough season to win their first title. She knows how to come through in the clutch.
7. CF Kenra Annovar (L/L/30) Newport Dolphins (South Newlandia)
The best runner for Chromatika who just needs to get on base.
8. RF Rose Dawson (R/R/32) Apple Valley Vipers (Super-Llamaland)
A reliable hitter who's on base percentage is quite good.
9. Pitcher/Pinch-Hitter.

Bench
1. PH/IF Gregory Simons (R/L/31) Rhoni Rhonin
The best player on the bench who can play three positions in the infield if needed.
2. PH/IF Redwina Maxx (R/R/30) New Llama Cyclones (Super-Llamaland)
Provides a reasonable voice from the bench. Not spectacular at anything, not bad at anything either.
3. PH/OF Dane Gilbert (R/R/24) Xingcheng Renaissance (Super-Llamaland)
The master of small hits, rather good at bunts and sacrifice flies. A coach's best friend when it comes time for strategy.
4. PH/OF Nila Aspen (L/L/27) Chromia Comets
A home run or bust kind of batter with a big bat.
5. PH/IF Molina Ishkaya (R/R/25) Masmow Dragons (South Newlandia)
An established talent that is a force behind the plate and on the field.
6. PH/IF Marea Homaly (R/R/23) St. Riecarn Saints (South Newlandia)
Homaly is a great fielder who can come through in batting situations, too.

Pitching Staff
1. LHP Clara Anoyara (23) Vargas City Lions (Super-Llamaland)
An off-speed pitcher who can throw in a variety of speeds and knows how to use each speed to the fullest extent. The downside is her lack of experience.
2. RHP Hillary Angelou (32) Elephant Valley United (South Newlandia)
The Ace for Chromatika. Has a wicked fastball and a serviceable changeup, loves to throw at people and make them flinch without hitting them.
3. LHP Oscar de Witt (31) Montreal Twins (Quebec)
A very reliable pitcher whose crutch is not being in his own head. He has command over four different pitches (fastball, changeup, slider, and four-seam fastball), and prefers to work people through the full count.
4. RHP Jerome Delapier (25) New Llama Cyclones (Super-Llamaland)
Delapier has command of his pitch count and possesses the acuity to stay ahead of the count and then actually seek out contact. This does mean that he is susceptible to home runs, but there are also lots of fly balls to the outfield.
5. RHP Miles Savey (32) Newport Owls (South Newlandia)
Prefers to try to beat batters with pure speed.

Bullpen
1. RHP Beatrice Castreaux (28) Alnio Reds - Long-Term Reliever
With a great changeup and a decent enough fastball, Castreaux can fill in for three or so innings without an issue.
2. LPH Ollie Bier (27) Rhoni Rhonin - Long-Term Reliever
A young phenom who could start if he really wanted to, Bier embraces the challenge of coming into compromised situations.
3. RHP Niles Pandolt (30) Elephant Valley Homers (South Newlandia) - Long-Term Reliever
A short-term reliever who's best used in key situations, Pandolt can get a team out of harrowing situations. He is also good at forgetting bad outings.
4. LHP Vette Beux (31) New Llama Wizards (Super-Llamaland) - Reliever
The bases-loaded specialist for the Outliers, Beux is really proficient at reading complex situations.
5. RHP Truman Savant (28) Rhoni Rhonin - Reliever
The nine-pitches to end an inning specialist who can get read if he stays for more than an inning.
6. LHP Carson Bennett (30) Felswyr Fire - Left-Handed Specialist
Self-explanatory. Likes to face batters in high pressure scenarios.
LHP Hona Gugor (22) Walstreim Stingrays (South Newlandia) - Left-Handed Specialist
A young left-handed specialist with a nasty fastball that can catch batters off guard. She is young and inexperienced but has a bright future.
7. RHP Joseph Edward Jr. (29) South Falls Athletics (Super-Llamaland) - Setup Man
The best Setup Man in the CBL for many years in a row.
8. RHP Hine Salle (31) Walstreim Stingrays (South Newlandia) - Closer
She can't be shaken. Well, except when she's overworked, but she's only human.

Can we repeat that success?

Two World Baseball Classics ago Milchama returned from international isolation and the U21 team did shockingly well in making Double Octos before losing to Sarzonia. Last World Baseball Classic, Milchama did beyond shockingly well and despite being ranked 39th made it all the way to the semifinals before losing and finishing in 4th place. Frankly, while it was expected that the A Team would do better than the U21ers it was still exciting to see how good the Warriors were despite the Isolation. So, if it's that good, there's no reason to change anything so Milchama is bringing back the exact team, with the exact same roster, and the exact same manager. Tal Clioch has been a damn good manager for the Swooton Sparrows and he'll continue to be the manager for the Milchama Warriors. It's an exciting time for Milchamian baseball and we're ready to win the whole thing this time!

A note on Milchamian pitchers:
Since cricket got increasingly popular in Milchama over the Isolation there has been a concurrent belief in increasing the ability of pitchers to hit. Therefore, Milchamian pitchers tend to hit like Greg Maddux or like pitchers in the 1920s. Not actually good hitters but will be able to get on base if you give them an easy pitch.\
Milchama Sports achievements:
World Baseball Classic 23 Champion!

Bardney National Base Ball Team

Base Ball in Bardney

Bardney plays an earlier form of the game of baseball. The dimensions are mostly the same, but the rules are a little different.

The pitching mound is 50 feet away, not 60 feet, 6 inches, and pitching cannot be overhand. This is not to imply that pitching looks like slow pitch softball, but only that pitchers cannot throw overhand. An underhand delivery or a sidearm delivery is common. Pitchers are allowed and do put movement on the ball and throw with some speed.

Click here to see what speeds from Bardney's 50 feet distance are equivalent to on a 60 feet, 6 inches, mound.

The number of called balls for a walk is 5, and the number of called strikes for a strikeout is 4 (if the batter swings and misses at the third strike, then that is a strikeout, i.e the batter cannot "strike out looking" on the third strike). There is no official strike zone, instead, it is up to the discretion of the umpire to call a strike or ball. Foul balls do not count as strikes.

Catchers typically wear gloves, but do not wear other protective equipment.

Foul balls caught on one bounce are considered outs, and gloves are not typically used.

A ball that bounces over the fence on one bounce, in modern baseball considered a "Ground rule double", is a home run.

In terms of the fan experience, most tickets are SRO and beer is cheap.

There are no uniform numbers.

How is Bardney going to compete with modern teams?

Players have been practicing under the international rules. They are getting used to pitching from 60 feet out and wearing gloves. They have hired some rogue international ballplayers to pitch to them overhand and at the speeds they will be seeing.

As for the pitchers, expect submarine, sidearm, or perhaps even low three-quarters releases with fastballs ranging from the 77-84 range. Also expect curves, sinkers, screwballs, and "rising" fastballs. Pitchers have been listed with their typical deliveries, but they can and will change deliveries if needed. Please also note that it is not the custom of Bardney catchers to immediately throw out balls that have been scuffed in some way. Bardney catchers, pitchers, and position players may even try to intentionally scuff the ball or rub some dirt on it to obtain extra movement. It is up to your discretion as to how much you want to RP Bardney players trying to skirt the rules around the ball and whether or not they are successful. Bardney players, however, have been warned strictly against the spitball, so that shouldn't be an issue.

As for the hitters, they don't have a huge amount of raw power, but they can hit home runs, since they'll be facing faster pitching than normal. But this isn't a team of bunters, either. They will try to hit as many line drives as they can, steal when they can, and take the extra base when they can.

Please also expect the stadiums you play in to be not always kept in perfect condition; the grass might be clipped too short or too long, or the basepaths might be too soft or too hard, or the dimensions might be a bit odd, or there might be too much foul ground for your liking. Some of this is just the way it is, based on how stadiums were constructed. Some of it is gamesmanship by the groundskeepers; it's up to your discretion how much you want to RP this affecting your team.

Will there be different rules when I play in Bardney?

No. Bardney will play by current WBC international rules. They just may play with a different style.

Postby The Greater Nordics » Wed Mar 30, 2022 10:32 am

Filip Novikov is back as manager and he has brought the same team as last time for this, the 54th World Baseball Classic. The team has experience in the WBC and should go farther than last time. It is still a fast, aggressive power hitting style that the Nordics bring and the crowds are sure to be entertained! This young team has a lot of personality and characters on it. The training camp and the lead up to the WBC was filmed and broadcast on Nordic tv and some players made the most of the camera crews being there. Rightfielder Mariann Van Assen was one of those and she liked to prank her teammates as they were in the locker room or in the showers. Even some of the coaches couldn't escape being pranked by her. Manager Novokov likes what he is seeing from this team and feels like they are being brought closer together by this and it should bring results on the field. It will be a tough group, the Nordics being drawn into a group with some tough teams, especially Quintessence of Dust and Abanhfleft. Even Barnettsville could give us a scare. We shouldnt take any team in the group for granted though as in the WBC any team can make a run.

Manager- Meghan Conrad (54) (Grande Mountain Huskies) (1st Classic)

The Maddie Polanco era in Cassadagan baseball came to an end two Classics ago as the manager who led the team from WBC’s 41-52 resigned from the team to pursue other opportunities with some believing she will return to Super-Llamaland, where she had a great career as a player. The team felt that Taylor Bryant, an excellent player and leader would be the next best in line, but after WBC 53, the Bryant-era is already over. Look, it’s not all Taylor’s fault, but #53 was such a disaster, that there will be widespread changes, and it will begin at the top.

Conrad has no experience at the international level, but has successfully been a manager in the CBL with Grande Mountain for many years. With the Huskies, she especially emphasizes pitching, with an added lean towards power pitchers. Aggressive pitchers who will come at anyone high and inside, then get you with a sharp breaking curveball. She is a strong believer in analytics, especially in terms of shifts and defensive positioning.

*- Player is appearing in their first WBC.

Starting Rotation (Stats in the last Cassadagan season included)
SP- #28- Jennifer Mandrick, 28, RHP, North Granby Bobcats (21-8, 2.13 ERA, 273 K’s)
SP- #16- Cassie Carmello, 25, LHP, Victoriaville Venom (19-5, 2.37 ERA, 255 K’s)*
SP- #20- Brianna Macek, 24, RHP, Starksville Brown Birds (17-7, 2.27 ERA, 251 K’S)*
SP- #25- Mia Cassidy, 24, LHP, Rutland Engineers (16-10, 2.55 ERA, 269 K’s)*
SP- #38- Sierra Combs, 26, RHP, Grande Mountain Huskies (20-9, 2.46 ERA, 260 K’s)*

Bullpen
RP- #26- Stacie Harper, 25, LHP, Concord Heights Royals, Anytime Relief
RP- #35- Madison Peterson, 28, RHP, New Lakeland Tycoons, Anytime Relief*
RP- #30- Zoey Valor, 26, RHP, Columbia Attack Geese, Long Relief
RP- #32- Deanna Harber, 23, LHP, Brattleboro Brats, Long Relief*
RP- #27- Kiersten Bell, 26, Plymouth Pilots, Short Relief
RP- #36- Madison Mahoney, 34, LHP, Grande Mountain Huskies, Short Relief
RP- #34- Danielle Simms, 34, RHP, Grande Mountain Huskies, Set-up Reliever
CP- #29- Carlie Meyers, 28, LHP, Concord Heights Royals, Closer*

Massive changes have been made to the pitching staff, especially to the starting rotation where the manager, Meghan Conrad, gets the best people in the nation that suit her style of managing. Age also seemed to be a factor, with younger players picked. Mandrick is the only returnee, but she is in the mold of what Conrad likes. She didn’t make as many changes to the bullpen, so there is a little more variety in the pitching styles here. One thing about Conrad is that she will go to the bullpen earlier than past Cassadagan managers have if she feels it is necessary, and does pay more attention to pitch counts than has been seen here in the past. There are some that have been left off the team that are eye openers, but again the response to any criticism of those not brought back is to remind them of the WBC 53 disaster.

Here is our lineup with the players stats from the most recently completed season in Cassadaigua. All players are switch hitters, you don’t get to this level in Cassadaigua without having that ability. Therefore, we use the same lineup when facing lefties or righties.

1) #2- Caitlin Williams- CF, Winchester Gamblers (.315, 5 HR, 66 RBI. 73 SB)*
2) #9- Allie Perry- 2B, Middlebury Jaguars, 20 (.338, 32 HR, 105 RBI, 11 SB)*
3) #13- Hailey Morris- 1B, Grande Mountain Huskies, 26 (.306, 45 HR, 133 RBI, 2 SB)
4) #1- Ashley McKnight- LF, North Granby Bobcats, 26 (.355, 51 HR, 146 RBI, 30 SB)
5) #7- Lexi Ford- RF, Fairfax Fire, 21 (.319, 47 HR, 120 RBI, 6 SB)*
6) #15- Shannon Jordan- 3B, Starksville Brown Birds, 24 (.294, 35 HR, 105 RBI, 3 SB)*
7) #8- Courtney Mixon- SS, New Lakeland Tycoons, 23 (.308, 16 HR, 85 RBI, 36 SB)*
8) #24- Katie Guerin- C, North Granby Bobcats, 27 (.288, 24 HR, 86 RBI, 0 SB)*
9) Pitcher

Bench:
#33- Brittney Cox- C, Starksville Brown Birds, 25*
#21- Julia Gantt- 1B/3B, Victoriaville Venom, 27*
#11- Lauren McDermott- 2B/SS, Concord Heights Royals, 30*
#5- Katie Stephens- OF, Concord Heights Royals, 30 (Long-time starter at CF)
#14- Steffie Kennedy- OF, Brattleboro Brats, 32 (Long-time starter at RF)
#19- Sarah Chastain- Utility, Winchester Gamblers, 22*
#18- Emily Brower- Utility, Grande Mountain Huskies, 22*

Massive turnover here as well. McKnight is the best player in the nation, so she was always going to be back. Perry is seen as a major up and coming prospect who figures to be paid big money by a big club as soon as they can get their hands on her. The same is true for Lexi Ford. Being a younger group, they don’t have to answer for the failures of the veterans last Classic, and can make their own names for themselves.

Introducing, the one and only...
Ranorian Krauts
,
the international arm of the Federation of Ranorian Baseball.

And, in all reality, not the only Krauts. 'Krauts' has become the moniker for all professional Ranorian national teams at this point

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my run scorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No
Follow my pitching rotation: Do what you want with it! Have fun
Godmod scoring events: Yep
RP injuries to my players: Yep, shoot me a DM or TG please!
Godmod injuries to my players: Yep, shoot me a DM or TG please!
Eject my players: Yep, shoot me a DM or TG please!
Godmod other events: Sure! Get in touch with me for anything crazy
Use DH at home: Ranoria=No DH. Up to you at yours, I suppose
Special Note: No Covid stuff. There is no COVID in Ranoria, just like there is no war in Ba Sing Se

Ranoria City, Ranoria

Background

The Ranorian Krauts are a privately funded team, supported by the joint funds of the Federation of Ranorian Baseball. In their first attempt, in the 44th edition, was a disaster. No talented players agreed to sign up with the exception of Leonardo Harrison. Predictably, the team finished a paltry 12-18 record, with Harrison being the only bright spot, 19 at the time. However, five years later, they fielded a stronger squad, with star players from home along with Ranorians playing abroad. As such, the team gave us a better showing with a somewhat successful 15-15 campaign in the World Baseball Classic 49, they were able to generate some level of intrigue from the nation as a whole.

The concept of starting a national team started when the Federation saw the massive dollars that Ranoria’s internationally competing Gridiron teams were raking in, and decided that, should they field such a team, they would be able to generate revenue in the country by piquing its interest. So far, they’re right, but a true run would be indicative of baseball emerging as a truly impactful sport in Ranorian culture.

Now, World Baseball Classic 50 was something else entirely. Leonardo Harrison initially issued a guarantee that the team would not only win 20 games in the group stage, but would advance in the knockout rounds. Well, we stumbled out of the gate a bit with a 9-10 record, so that didn't happen, but everything changed after that. Our Krauts went on a 10-1 tear to end the group stage and even win a knockout series. With a ton of buzz surrounding the team going into WBC 51 though, they suffered a couple years of stagnation, finishing 14-16 in WBC 52 and 13-17 in WBC 53. Just before people really gave up on the team though, they managed an 18-12 mark in WBC 53, just a hair short of a playoff berth.

So, with all the excitement...what can the Krauts bring to the table in the 54th edition of the World Baseball Classic?

Constance Airlines Field is the beating heart of the expanding Federation of Ranorian Baseball, and the largest of several stadiums that were built between this and the last World Baseball Classic. International competition - a 19-11 run with a knockout stage victory included - in this competition's 50th edition helped to spark that expansion, and despite mediocrity in the past few editions, baseball has remained somewhat popular domestically in Ranoria

1st Base 12 Vincent Veltrone 5-11 195 24 New Llama Wizards (LPB)

Shortstop 2 Leonardo Harrison 6-2 215 32 Nashville Maestros

R. Field 22 Rubin Graves 6-2 205 33 Edmunton Rebels
DH 41 Tim von Kuhn 6-3 240 41 Moncton Dinos (Quebec)

Leonardo Harrison: A fluid athlete and one of the best players in Ranorian history...not that that's saying much. At shortstop, he's the centerpiece of the defense, and he's been playing professionally since he was just under 17 years old. Ranorian baseball has become more mainstream in large part due to his efforts, both with his heroic performance at the tail end of WBC 50 and his consistently staying in Ranoria's Federation of Ranorian Baseball rather than taking more lucrative contracts abroad. Notably, Quebecois super-agent Pierre McCarthy was pivotal in keeping Harrison financially able to stay. In a rapidly expanding FRB, salary caps kept exploding and even after a renegotiated record deal, Harrison was being snubbed a year later. McCarthy got creative though once Harrison hopped on with him, and tied Leo's deal to a percentage of the salary cap to keep his deal financially feasible. He's regressed just a hair from his dominant prime, but he's still good enough to compete with anyone.

Tim von Kuhn: There's a reason he's hiding in left field...or was. Von Kuhn has lost a lost of his speed, and with young power hitter Julian Breit taking his spot in the outfield, he's been regulated to DH. Tim played most of his professional career for Quebec's Moncton Dinos, but he's retired from domestic play and has made it clear that WBC 54 will be his swan song.

Nicholas Lux: Essentially the consensus second best player in Ranoria..Until he signed in Quebec. Expect a good hitting percentage and more than enough homers to keep you on your toes. Much faster than his frame would have you believe. Known as the "mercenary" to Ranorian fans after taking a blockbuster contract to play in Quebec's QBO rather than Ranoria's fledgling Federation.

Jesse Griffith: Do you believe in taking chances? That's what the Krauts did with this signing. Griffith is the youngest man (er, boy?) to ever play professional Ranorian baseball, at just 15 years old. Griffith was streaky in his first pair of seasons on the team, but he's really come into his own as one of - if not the - the best players in Ranorian baseball. He's coming off one of the most dominant campaigns in Federation history with a ring and an MVP in his resume now, but contract talks have stalled with his Cincinnati Warbirds after seven years with the team. Rumor has it he'll be heading to Quebec and Shingoryeo to get a deal that allows him to capitalize off his prime years.

Judas Acker: A burner by nature, Acker is the fastest player on this team. He doesn't have the best bat, but you better bet that if he gets on base any pitcher will pay for a lapse in attention.

Vincent Veltrone: Veltrone is a solid youngster who took his talents to Llamaphant Pro Baseball to get the publicity and money he is worth before coming back to participate with the Krauts. Fluid athlete. Along with Julian Breit, the Krauts are pinning their hopes on these two young guns - and the ascension of Jesse Griffith to help turn this franchise around.

Julian Breit:Breit was in the same high school class as Veltrone, and also plays in South Newlandia. Breit is a big power swinger - he and Veltrone helped drag the Krauts back to some measure of relevancy in WBC 53. The goal is for these two to become the new core of this team as Nicholas Lux and Leonardo Harrison are only getting older.

Position Number Name Ht. Wt. Age Team
Catcher 77 Philbert Kelsin 6-2 210 30 Ranoria City Sluggers
Infield 7 Abraham Leinhardt 6 205 33 Vricksinburg Blaze
Infield 19 Arthur Jackson 5-9 175 30 Vricksinburg Blaze
Infield 6 Maximus Tillman 5-11 190 37 Raleigh Firstmates
Outfield 55 Damian Horace 5-11 190 33 Edmunton Rebels
Outfield 30 Stephen Reichenbach 5-10 185 31 Nashville Maestros
Outfield 59 Tristen Feng 6-1 205 32 Cincinnati Warbirds

Maximus Tillman: A starter on this team a year ago, Tillman's job was taken by a 15 year old. However, he is more than happy to continue to earn an extra paycheck on top of what he is paid by the Firstmates.

Tristen Feng: Veteran teammate of the talented but raw Jesse Griffith, Feng has taken the kid under his wing, as they are far and away the best athletes on their squad, at the very least.

Starters
Strength Number Name Ht. Wt. Age Team
Fastball 60 Tommy Verona 6-4 220 34 California City Dodgers (Quebec)
Fastball 86 Jorge Billing 6-1 215 22 Edmunton Rebels
Fastball 55 Erik Schmidt 6-5 225 31 Banija
Fastball 71 Parker Majors 6-4 215 30 Banija
Fastball 70 Erin Phelps 6-2 215 32 Cleveland Rebels

Bullpen
Role Number Name Ht. Wt. Age Team
Reliever 73 Thomas Barnet 6-1 200 29 Nashville Maestros
Fastball 64 Corey Nielman 6-3 195 27 Vricksinburg Blaze
Reliever 68 Miellen Walker 6-3 215 21 Vricksinburg Blaze
Reliever 61 Alabaster Cappa 6-3 190 31 Nashville Maestros
Closer 62 Brady Behringer 6-2 190 27 Ranoria City Sluggers

Tommy Verona: The best pitcher on this roster, Verona can hit a top speed of 100 mp/h and is more than capable of playing with the world's best. He has spent most of his career in Quebec, playing for the California City Dodgers. Brother of 5x All Star RFL Quarterback Paul Verona, uncle of Richardson starting QB Astrid Verona.

Erik Schmidt: Played most of his career in Banija in order to, well, make some friggin' money. Schmidt's bread and butter is a basic fastball, expect top speed of 94-95 mp/h when pitching, not quite as accurate as Verona, however.

Parker Majors: Played one year professionally in the Federation before immigrating to Banija. Similar to Schmidt in that he has a solid fastball, although he doesn't quite have the gas of the above two guys. Decent curveball for a change up.

John Stallone: Stallone has the fastest ball in the Federation of Ranorian baseball, hitting a personal best this season with a 97 mp/h throw, although usually he will top out around 94 mp/h and average 91-92. Poor ball control.

Erin Phelps: Fastball pitcher, expect the 88 mp/h to 92 mp/h range consistently, with good accuracy. He can hit 94 mp/h but tends to throw a lot fewer strikes doing so.

Sylvester Wayne: Throws a lot of sliders and curveballs, and has a knuckleball that approaches 65 mp/h. His tricky style often results in a good deal of walks, however. Used as a setup guy to bridge between the starter and closer.

Corey Nielman: Nielman is a youngster with a big arm. Currently used as a closer, can throw up to 97 mp/h. Nielman is hoping to knock off John Stallone as the fastest pitcher in the country.

Thomas Barnet: Emergency pitcher or a setup guy, Barnet's good enough to not screw things up too badly between the starter and the closer. Another youngster that the Federation's fans have high hopes for.

Brady Behringer: Behringer is capable of stepping into a starting role - and generally does for the Ranoria City Sluggers, but is best served as a closer with a cannon for an arm.

Alabaster Cappa: Older brother of former #1 overall pick in the RFL draft, Ricky Cappa, quarterback at Ranoria State. Alabaster's a solid pitcher with a big arm, and a very solid curveball as a changeup. Probably best kept to short stretches, however... and certainly more successful than his brother, who lasted two seasons with his original team.

Mass turnover leads to mixed feelings,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

World Baseball Classic 53 will probably go down as one of the worst in the history of the nation. The only one I can think of that may be worse would have been number 17, where we failed to qualify out of the group stage following our World Baseball Classic 16 title. The team rebounded from that very well, so there is some hope that they will be able to do the same thing this time around. The Classic is very different now, far more competitive than it ever was then. The game has certainly grown throughout the world, and as such, maintaining a high rank is very difficult. As a four time champion, you also know that everyone will be gunning for you, even if you are not having one of your better campaigns.

World Baseball Classic 53 was supposed to be the beginning of the Taylor Bryant era as head coach. She was following Maddie Polanco, who did so much for our team beginning in World Baseball Classic 41 and lasting all the way until the 52nd edition. There was the championship in 50, and other final appearances. We would make the semifinals on several occasions during that span, but after the 52nd Classic, Polanco decided she wanted to retire from her position and return to her native Super-Llamaland. Having done so much for Cassadagan baseball, fans were gracious to hear the news, and supporting her as she went onto the next chapter in her life. The next coach in waiting was always going to be Taylor Bryant, who played on the championship team, retiring as a player after it, so she also appeared on many of our great teams in the 40's. She was instrumental in what some consider the greatest semifinal series in the history of the Classic, the victory in 49 over Newmanistan. But above the all the playing accolades, she was a captain and off the field leader, someone who was really looking much like Maddie Polanco was in her younger days when she joined the team. The 53rd Classic would be the first for Taylor Bryant as manager.

It really is hard to fathom that this team could go 11-19 and have the pitching staff give up nearly five runs per game. Bryant’s biggest mistake was probably trusting the rotation, bring it back in its entirety even though three players were over 30 years of age. But they were all still pitching well, and being in the lower 30's is not a death sentence in baseball, and certainly not if you are a pitcher and keeping your arm in good shape. They all were, and as experienced players, they were brought back. But then the ace, Brianna Shirley, got lit up. Hannah Phelan struggled, and Jessica Ashfield was awful. None of them are back, and in the case of Brianna Shirley, batters throughout the Cassadagan league did their homework on how opponents in the World Baseball Classic were successful against her, and Shirley has had a subpar year with Concord Heights. Now 28-year old Kelsey Thomassen also did not pitch well when returning to Cassadaigua. Only Jennifer Mandrick seemed to get back to dominant form at home right away. Offensively, the team was not much better, averaging less than four runs to game. Young Ashley McKnight, the top batter in Cassadaigua was not the problem, and had a strong campaign. Hailey Morris also fared well enough. But when the team is not getting any production from the top of the lineup, and damage Morris and McKnight can do will be limited. Behind them in the lineup, the team also failed to produce, so the game planning of opponents probably got very easy against us.

Why did that happen? Could a manager really make that much of a difference with players at this level? Was it simply a case of being in a group that ended up being really good? Sarzonia and Soldera finished 1-2 in the group, with Hannasea third. Soldera was a shocker and continued their great run into the playoffs. Sarzonia, of course, is a proven nation and Hannasea a major up and comer. Curiously, none of Sarzonia, Soldera or Hannasea are back for this World Baseball Classic. Still, how much blame should be put on the manager? On the players? How many people would pay the price?

It turns out that the answer is mostly everyone will pay the price, including Taylor Bryant. The team will now be managed by 54-year old Meghan Conrad of the Grande Mountain Huskies. Conrad has a bit of reputation in the league as being a bit of dictator with her players, but those who play for her call her “hard sometimes, but very fair”. Conrad builds her teams with pitching first, but not just any time of pitcher, she specifically likes flame throwers that will throw up and in at will. The Huskies led the CBL in a couple of categories last season: most hit batters, and most bench clearing brawls being involved in. Their pitchers also led the league in strikeouts. While Conrad is not bringing her entire Grande Mountain staff here, she’s bringing people that are known in the CBL to have the type of pitching style that the Huskies have. Jennifer Mandrick is the only returnee from that rotation. Now, bring in Cassie Carmello, Brianna Macek, Mia Cassidy, and Sierra Combs. Aggressive hard throwers (but don’t think that they only throw fastballs, because they, as a unit, can mix in sliders, curves and changeups too). Cassidy was part of three bench clearing brawls during the season last year as a member of the Rutland Engineers, including one against Grande Mountain where Sierra Combs was the opposing starter. The bullpen has more of the same.

Offensively, McKnight and Morris are back but everyone else is a new face. However, Katie Stephens and Steffie Kennedy were brought back and are listed as being in a bench role. The emphasis here is on versatile younger players who will be looking to prove themselves and get big contracts from bigger teams than they currently play for. They know that a big World Baseball Classic can really help in that, and Conrad is well aware of how motivating that can be in place of people who have already signed their huge contracts.

Meghan Conrad was not done though, and convinced the Cassadagan Association for Baseball to have all the home games played in Grande Mountain, instead of Concord Heights, which has been the norm. Conrad said, “There is less to do in Grande Mountain. That’s why you need to be here. Heck, I’d have it in boring ol’ Winchester if I could, but staying at home, for me, is preferable. They need to be focused fully on baseball, nothing else. You are representing Cassadaigua, and need to make the whole nation proud of you because Lord knows, you sure pissed off a lot of people last time and had them waste money going to watch you play.” Conrad went on to say, “I look at them and tell that is exactly why you are here. I believe that you are the ones that can give us a different result, the type of result that Cassadaigua is supposed to be having in the World Baseball Classic, and I will not personally accept any other result. Several know a big pay day could be coming in free agency, so you better go into that negotiation having made the nation proud and not added to their pain and agony.”

The Classic has abandoned the series format this year. Bidders from Zwangzug did enough to convince most people in the World Baseball Classic Council to support their bid, saying that had a system that could justify a shorter schedule. The Cassadagan Association for Baseball was not one of the believers. “Zwangzug, as a nation, is awesome to host this. They have a great history that you cannot argue,” a CAB official stated, “and maybe it is just because we experienced World Baseball Classic 17, but we are not really won over by this short format.” A shorter home schedule also means less home games and therefore less revenue from ticket sales during the group stage. “It hurt the financials, a lot.”

Nova Anglicana Roster: WBC 54

Starting Rotation (order as given)
LHP #19 Christian Hammond, 31 - known for his big bender that arcs into the strike zone, but fastball is more than respectable, 94-96 but can reach back for 98 at times, broke onto the scene by developing a tight slider, changeup excellent fourth pitch
RHP #56 Rocky Gantt, 32 - pops the glove at 96-97, devastating slurve, good changeup and average cutter help him against lefties
RHP #36 Jonathan Drake, 31 - nice, easy, repeatable delivery that gives him a low-effort mid-90s fastball that can be ramped up if necessary, throws a slider and split change as well
LHP #20 Joshua Rouillard, 28 - a wizard on the mound, throws just 92-94, but has two-seam, four-seam, and cut varieties of fastball, while curveball, screwball, changeup, and slider give him a lot of different off-speed looks
RHP #44 Caleb Sherman, 28 - has four offerings of at least league-average (fastball, curve, slider, change), 95-97 fastball and 12-6 curve are best pitches

Bullpen
LHP #57 Branford Bass, 28 - big-bodied guy at 6'3, 230, not overwhelming at 93-95, but hits his spots and mixes in a good curve and slider, will work in long relief
LHP #48 Darren Sharp, 24, - only 5'9, but uses thick lower body and big leg lift to generate 97-100 on the fastball, throws the gas 70% of the time, but can pull out slider, curve, or change
LHP #46 Steven Gray, 26 - lefty submariner will work exclusively against lefties, will use a slider as primary pitch, but will work mid-80s fastball in on hands as well
RHP #38 Tommy Logan, 27 - new fireman/multi-inning guy has a hard cut fastball, a sensational slurve, an average changeup, and is working on a splitter, expect to see cutters against lefties and slurves against righties, mostly
RHP #16 Simon Steele, 26 - primary advantage is 6'9 stature, fastball tops out at 93, but gets on hitters much more quickly, strong 12-6 curveball as well
RHP #11 Jean-Michel Lefebvre, 25 - relies on a cut fastball from a low three-quarter release, putaway pitch is split change, kind of reverse platoon splits
RHP #43 Roger Bizet, 32 - Bizet is kind of an anomaly, chucking mid-80s sliders from a sidearm slot over 70% of the time, but fastball is 92-93 and can pull out a change against lefties too
RHP #30 Justin Chandler, 30 - violent delivery means he almost falls off the mound as he pitches, but he sits 98 with a dynamite slider, not much else
RHP #23 Ricky Hart, 29 - throws just two pitches, a slurve and an upper-90s fastball, but it's a devastating combo

Catchers
C #60 David Conner, 28, (S/R) - a do-it-all guy, framing, arm, blocking, average, and power, speed is below average, but has worked on his patience
C #18 Daniel Hunter, 32, (R/R) - a nuclear deterrent behind the plate for runners, excellent game-caller as well, offense will likely never be better than below-average
C #51 Joey Carlson, 24, (L/R) - big guy has real power, but real swing-and-miss, not much mobility behind the plate or on the basepaths, but framing and arm are solid

Infielders
1B #21 Vincent Saint-Denis, 28, (R/R) - he's here for raw power, lot of swing-and-miss in his game, but crushes the ball when he makes contact, sneakily good on defense
3B #26 Barrett Satterfield, 32, (S/R) - first thing you notice about him is his booming, sometimes inappropriately loud voice, can be goofy but motivator and cheerleader in chief, beyond off-field skills, combines spray-hitting approach with solid arm and quick feet, has tapped his substantial raw power
SS #11 Davis Shipley, 29, (R/R) - hit tool is average, presently great at adding value outside of his bat, silky smooth in the infield, makes throws from anywhere, good eye at the plate, more of a smart baserunner than speed demon
2B #6 Nolan Dunning, 31, (L/R) - slick fielder can man short, but better at second, quick bat who hits for a high average and draws a good number of walks, though not much power, very fast
CI #50 Jake Wright, 28, (S/R) - from the right side, a massive power approach, from the left, more of a line-drive hitter, strong arm, suspect at third, but solid at first
IF #27 Jordan Lacoste, 27, (S/R) - above average power for middle infield, arm a little weak, great speed and range, needs to take more walks

Outfielders
OF #25 Gary McKinney, 26, (S/R) - standout tool is batting average and control, very difficult to strike out and can hit it anywhere, good foot speed and can play any outfield position, arm average, has gotten better on walks, power still below average
OF #35 Hank Oliver, 29, (S/L) - whiz kid makes highlight-reel plays in center, great jump/first step means he has tremendous range, arm is fair, doesn't hit for a terribly high average or power, but draws a lot of walks and steals/takes the extra base whenever possible
OF #29 Sam Erickson, 30, (R/R) - has a tremendous arm while also showing off above-average range for right, power most notable part of offensive game, solid speed, will hustle, take the extra base, situational hitter when needed
OF #24 Victor Charpentier, 26, (L/L) - strong power, strong arm, not the most mobile, kind of a three-true-outcomes player
UTIL #40 Luca Favreau, 29, (S/R) - has enough arm to fake it at short, third, or right, enough speed to fake it in center, plays an excellent second and left, strong situational hitter, can work the walk, not much power, but enough you can't ignore it

Team Zwangzug, known as the "Zebras," were an early force in the WBC but later faded from relevance. They competed consistently through WBC31, reappeared for 39 and 40, and then popped back again in cycle 49, having entered the last few since then. In WBC52, they returned to form by finishing in third place yet again (for the eighth time in history). Happily, the 39-40 cycle saw Felix Wainwright break the alleged radio announcers' curse. This doesn't mean we'll necessarily have competent announcers, or any announcers at all; just that we could have some capable of holding down the job for multiple cycles. If we wanted to.

Like their distant ancestors, the Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson). They tend to be somewhat new-mathy with regards to not bunting, not stealing very much, etc.

Manager: Wenjie Liu (f). Claims to be affiliated with the FTC Secret Squirrels, but given that we can't even be bothered to scorinate our league, we can't even vouch for that. She knows what she's doing, though. We hope.

Factbook is ludicrously out of date by now and just linked for tradition's sake. More information about the country is available on the wiki and is sporadically being added to. If you RP first, please follow my lineup and rotation (or ICly justify any substitutions). Feel free to pick my runscorers, RP injuries to my players, and eject my players. You can be relatively creative; however, if you want to do something like literal godmoding, or something that would cause harm to my citizens/in my country, please telegram me first. Also, please ask first if you want to do something like RPing a no-hitter or statistically rare on-field event.

Batter Up!: The End Of An Era Is Upon Us...

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Apr 01, 2022 5:19 am

Full Name: TJUN-ia
Organisation Name: TJUN-ia Baseball
Trigram: TJU
Nicknames: Jaguars (Formal)/Battin' Jags (Informal/Sport Specific)
Home Colours: Blue Unis With Orange Trim/Blue and Orange Hat
Away Colours: Orange Unis with Blue Trim/Blue and Orange Hat
Alternate Colours: Black Unis with Dark Orange Trim/Black and Dark Orange Hat

Last time out, in Banija, the TJUN-ia Battin' Jaguars were the #2 team in the world. For this edition, WBC54 in Zwangzug, we will be #4. All things considered, the Battin' Jags did an alright job as the 2nd-ranked side and went 20-10 before being absolutely crushed in the QFs to the tournament runners-up and new #1 side South Newlandia - simply put, no one could ever recover from losing a Game 1 by 20-2. The actual reigning champs are Quintessence of Dust and the Quoddites will by the target everyone is aiming for this time around...in what may turn out to be the most important WBC in our history.

The ripples of #OneLastRide, the Hoops-Jags' final stand in the IBC that saw them make the final for the very first time, are still being felt around the TJUN-ian sporting world - and now, it is the turn of the Baseball to try and do the same. Phillip Hellas-Verona specifically told us in a press conference that this tournament will be "the last of this era" - so you can certainly expect both a push towards going as far as possible and the development of the next generation of stars. Many new Cubs have been promoted to see what they can learn (Santino Fenatti, both Anastasia and Svetlana Mykvinich, Li Chen Sho and pitcher Kimi Holvanen) and they will certainly be hoping to find a place in this side when this tournament ends. No matter what happens, the Battin' Jags will push to go as far as they can...maybe even reach that 7-game series they've come close to, but have never made before.

BALLPARKS
Rounders Field, Portside, JB TJUN-ia (40,000)
Image

Named after an English (U1) game similar to Baseball, Rounders Field is considered by many to be the home of TJUN-ian baseball. It has a retractable roof if the threat of rain is present, while also containing modern amenities. Don't worry about the "artwork" near centre field - that is a tribute to the varied wildlife of both Portside and TJUN-ia. The away changing rooms will still be looked at by a jaguar with the following message:
YOU ARE ENTERING THE JUNGLE
FAIR PLAY SHALL BE OBSERVED HERE AT ALL TIMES
IF NOT, THE CROWD SHALL EAT YOU ALIVE

The crowd here are known for not taking foul play lightly, and this message gives a warning of that to any opposition. TJUN-ia wants to play fairly and the message hopes that the opponent plays fairly too.

The Diamond in The Gardens, New Washington, NAU Zone (42,000)
Image

The Diamond in The Gardens is located in "The Gardens" - a major sporting complex in the NAU Zone capital of New Washington. Just down the road from Gridiron Football's Field of Dreams, it has the traditional ivy as part of the entire back wall - a sign that you are in The Gardens. Built based on classic ballparks in U1 and U2, modern amenities are present within this old-style park. It has 2 modern scoreboards and 1 manual one, which will be used to display the scores across the tournament. Unlike their counterparts in Portside, fans here don't really care about "fairness" and "sporting equality" - they just want to watch some baseball. These confines are certainly friendly and the fans are known for enjoying the game no matter if the home team is winning or not.

BROOKSTATION NATIONAL BASEBALL TEAM

BASEBALL IN BROOKSTATION

Baseball isn't a popular sport in Brookstation as it is overshadowed by it's counterpart, cricket. Baseball finds a lot of popularity among certain college and university campuses, just like Rugby. In the past few years, arrangement for the development of the baseball has been made in Brookstation. Brookstation's first baseball tournament was the 15th International Baseball Slam, where they managed to reach the final 6 before being knocked out by Chromatika, who in turn was knocked out by Abanhfleft. Luckily for Brookstation, they managed to defeat both these nations in their debut WBC series, even defeating the then WBC holders Chromatika twice. Things didn't go well for Brookstation however and thus the nation saw a disappointing exit being only a point behind three nations. This time, the baseball association seeks a better performance from the team.

Town Halebid Field is Brookstation's biggest ballpark located in Halebid with a capacity of 20,000. It's construction started in 1983 by the Sports Federation and was completed within a year. The stadium hosts monthly baseball games where players from Brookstation play against each other to raise fund and donate it for charity. This stadium is unlikely to be full considering the popularity of baseball in Brookstation. All home matches of Brookstation will be held here.

The Origins of the 189

The 189 wrote:The 189 are refugees from a planet known as -----. The native inhabitants, known as --------, look like a weird hybrid of a giant squid and a praying mantis, and they communicate using bioluminescent orbs on their heads that can glow many different colors. Their language is entirely built on color and light, without any sound or text. The -------- were very technologically advanced, and their economy was automated to a high degree, with many jobs being done by machines. However, as more and more workers were replaced by machines, it became difficult for the poor to find employment. As inequality grew, the rich became increasingly disdainful of the poor, and the poor became increasingly resentful against the rich -- until finally their resentment boiled over and there was a revolution. Angry unemployed -------- rioted in the streets, killed business-owners, and smashed the machines that had taken their jobs.

Some business-owners and machines fled from the mobs and went into hiding in remote areas of -----. Others escaped to the planet's moons. One group of machines climbed aboard an interstellar spaceship and fled out of the solar system entirely. These machines are the 189 -- 188 robots and autonomous vehicles plus the ship itself.

For years they wandered among the stars. They had no trouble maintaining themselves, but with no owners to tell them what to do, and no customers for them to serve, their existence felt a little empty. And so they sought out an inhabited world where they could find new owners, new customers, anyone or anything to give their existence a purpose.

Their Current Status on Earth

The 189 have two settlements on Earth.

Their financial institutions and the largest human city under the 189's protection are in ----------, also called Port Anaia. Port Anaia accepts refugees from across the world. It has a harbor where international ships can refuel or trade, a beach resort, a marina for fishing boats, an electric car factory, and a sapient stock exchange. It is also a tax haven. If you RP characters stashing money here, they should have an account at Reclamation Bank.

An older settlement called -------- or Reclamation was built on a landfill where the 189 study and recycle the trash.

Scientific research and cultural exchange are primarily centered in Reclamation, while economic activity and humanitarian services are centered in Port Anaia. The two settlements are far apart in different regions of the world, but this is not too difficult for the 189 since they still have the ship that brought them to Earth. The ship's name is -------- and she is very large and shiny with big gold wings and a wingspan of a few kilometers when they are fully extended.

Their Home Stadia

----------- a.k.a. Reclamation Stadium.
Capacity 5,800
Reclamation Stadium is near the dump where the 189 landed when they originally arrived on Earth. It may be in an unclaimed area of Esportiva, or slightly outside Esportiva, depending on how broadly you define the region.

--------- a.k.a. Anaia Stadium
Capacity 9,000
Anaia Stadium is in Port Anaia, a few blocks back from the waterfront, but still convenient to the nice hotels along the beach.

The Baseball Team:

Manager: -----

LF --------
Originally built as a sexbot, but not designed to service humans. She looks like a female --------, a little over 6 feet tall with long tentacles and a glossy shell on her back. Her skin is very realistic, so she can be easily mistaken for a living creature. Great dexterity with her tentacles, decent contact hitter, but not necessarily the best range as a fielder.

SS ----------
Originally a military medical robot designed to rescue wounded from combat zones and treat their injuries. Around 7 feet tall with a very chunky build. One of the fastest base-runners on the team. Hits for power, but might strike out sometimes because the heaviness of its arms makes it hard to respond quickly if a pitch breaks in an unexpected way. Grounds crews may be annoyed at how much it chews up the grass when it lumbers around the field on defense.

1B --------
Another sexbot similar to --------.

C ----------
An autonomous earth-mover. It's not very fast, but it is very tough. Don't bother trying to knock it aside when you slide into home.

2B --------
Originally a fire-fighting robot, around 5 feet tall with a rough and rugged look. A versatile player that is decent across the board.

RF -------
A cleaning robot, short and squat with very long arms. It can chase pitches well outside the strike zone and still hit them, and its long reach is also useful in the field. However, it runs the bases like a floor polisher. Because it is a floor polisher.

CF --------
Originally built to work a customer service counter at a bank, it looks like an alien creature with tentacles -- similar to the sexbots, but a little shorter and stockier. Moves a bit faster than the sexbots. As a batter, it is very patient, not swinging at crap; but sometimes it makes only weak contact with the ball because it swung too late.

3B ------
A cute little robot about 3 feet tall with a shiny garnet-red casing, originally built to help excavate archaeological sites. The small strike zone and the agility of this machine leave pitchers no room for error. However, its small size makes it ineffectual as a fielder. Sometimes it just can't reach the ball.

SP --------
A piece of machinery from a car factory, around 6 feet tall and mounted on wheels. Throws hard, usually keeps it in the zone, but has not grasped the finer points of how to confuse batters with off-speed pitches. A little clumsy batting, fielding, and base-running.

RP ---------
A machine originally built for handling samples in a virology lab. It does not throw as hard as --------, but it is sneakier and makes more clever use of spin on the ball.

Additional Notes:
All players can switch hit, and they are about equally good (or bad) from both sides of the plate. There is no bench because the 189 have long battery life. They have added a relief pitcher to their roster this year in case their starter has maintenance issues. There are no jersey numbers because the 189 do not wear jerseys. Your nation's fans or media can make up their own nicknames for the players if they find the color sequences too awkward.

The home plate umpire is a 3 foot tall robot named -----. Like most of the 189, it is easily confused by human speech, so it may be more confused than offended if you start yelling at it to argue a call.

The food delivery drone ------ will be selling snacks for any spectators who get hungry during the game.

Most of the 189 do not have the ability to detect sound. They rely exclusively on visual communication, or human-made devices with dictation software.

The managing Ranorian military is one of few responsibilities delegated to the federal government. Each state is required to divert a significant portion of their budget and a set minimum amount towards the nation's defense, and in some states this is the primary reason for income taxes, as the federal government takes in a very low, flat income tax.

The military is largely supplied through contractors, such as Karmin-Falce Auto, Adelhard Dynamics, or Reinhild Aerodynamics, and employs a good amount of sophisticated technology both to ensure dominance and power projection, and to minimize casualties. Any modern military would be hard pressed, and perhaps foolish, if they decided to take arms against the URAF, both due to massive resources at the country's disposal and its relatively advanced technology.

Preface:
United Ranorian Air Force

While the URAF is regarded as the least innovative of the three main branches of the Ranorian military, their standing strength and available air power make them a true threat to maintain air superiority at home and impose it abroad.

As of January 1, 2025, the Air Force includes 230,255 active duty members, of which 44,626 are officers and 185,629 are enlisted. 3,750 fighters and 300 ICBMs.

Of these fighters, a significant 1,100 are the headline grabbers, multirole or devoted air superiority fighters. The "Lupa" AS-15 model and its variants, while over a decade old, still makes up the bulk of this fleet 770 of the fighters still in service. They can compete on par or with an advantage with most modern military aircraft although the most advanced fighters will likely hold the edge. The more recently developed AS-23s, however, are cutting edge aircraft that the URAF fields as their next-generation fighter with the intention of phasing out their older planes in short order. The rest of the 2,650 aircraft are filled out with craft such as transports, refueling craft, utility, reconnaissance, and bombers.

In general, the air force provides limited humanitarian aid in peacetime. Ranoria is well known to be stingy on this front with somewhat isolationist approach to both international aid and conflict, but when necessary the air force is the part of the military that steps in. Beyond that, they serve as power projection at home. Military bases in Quebec and Shingoryeo among other countries also field limited Ranorian air power to aid allies who need it, but any enemy approaching the Ranorian homeland would need to get through hundreds of miles of attack range of the air force before crossing the border.

When conflict does arise, the air force's first and most vital responsibility is to establish air superiority. And whether its through sheer numbers or strategical precision, they can do that. Once established, other roles such as reconnaissance, surveillance, and long range strike capabilities come into play to assist ground operations.

Area Denial Responsibility

Perhaps most vitally, the air force is in charge of Ranoria's "area denial" strategy. The Ranorian military fields a fleet of 12 trucks - used as mobile missile platforms - outfitted with launchers for hypersonic missiles with a projected range of approximately 1,200 miles, or 1,930 kilometers. This is strategically significant as it is well outside the range of any aircraft carriers fighter or bomber complement's load, and those aircraft carriers would be the targets of such missiles. These missiles, consequently, may be able to erase even the largest of aircraft carriers with a single strike just due to the force produced at over mach 5, even setting aside any warheads they carry.

If any hostile navy wishes to invade Ranoria's shores, this is a death sentence to any high-value naval vessels that enter its range. Even with refueling drones and sending fighters and bombers on missions that would leave them unable to return to their carriers, most would be unable to get within strike distance of these missile-loaded trucks, and that's if they were able to pin their location down.

The teams listed after each player's name are where they play during the regular season. The "Bats" in "Fuzhou Bats" refers to the winged animal, not a baseball bat. The meaning of the name is clearer in the local languages. The Khumbu Icefall Doctors are named after the people who prepare the path for mountain climbers up the Khumbu Icefall every year at the start of climbing season, and the team's logo is a pair of picks for rock-climbing -- but the name is often shortened to "Doctors" or "Docs" and there are some pun-loving fans that wear lab coats and stethoscopes to show their support. (The capital has unusually high rates of English language literacy because people learn it to work in government and tourism.) These people are most commonly found at Syangboche, but some of them may travel elsewhere.

It's also common to find fans using prayer wheels to cheer on the team. Some people find the practice tacky and disrespectful toward religion, but people still do it. There are even special prayer wheels made for this purpose, which are about as classy as those foam hands with the pointy fingers that you sometimes see sports fans waving around.

The Sherpa Empire uses dark blue uniforms for many sports teams that represent the Empire in international competition, including the WBC teams. If you see a Sherpa sports fan wandering around with dyed blue hair, that's usually a clue that they're going to be really noisy and obnoxious. However, they could also be a racing fan who dyed their hair to look like Shuzhen Zhu or Ricky Lee.

The national language is Sherpa. Nepali, Hindi, Arabic, and Mandarin are used regionally alongside Sherpa (Arabic in the West, Hindi in the South, etc.). Many people are multilingual, but it is kind of a crapshoot which languages they speak. You may find people that speak 6 different languages -- but none that are useful internationally.

Stadia

MD 4 vs. Raspotochje:
Queen of the Hills Sports Complex
Darjeeling, Gorkhaland
Capacity 37,300
This is one of the smaller ballparks in the Empire, but its cozy feel, quaint brick work, and the pretty landscaping around the park are beloved by the fans. There are also other activities like mini-golf nearby if fans want something to do before the game. It has a short outfield, though the outfield wall is relatively tall and long fly balls often bounce off instead of going out. At an elevation of 2,042m above sea level, players and fans are unlikely to suffer severe altitude sickness, but you might still notice some effects such as fly balls carrying farther than usual or starting pitchers struggling to go deep into games.

MD 5-7 vs Super-Llamaland, Virgina Nova, and Reorganized Portugal:
Syangboche Athletic Complex
Namche, Khumbu Capital District
Capacity 43,800
Built on a mountaintop overlooking the national capital at an elevation of 3780m (12,402ft), this is one of the most extreme hitter's parks in the world because of the high altitude and the short left field. In addition to the altitude, cold weather and high winds are common. Building a ballpark here was pure idiocy, but SIBA and the Ministry of Culture continue to use it anyway because it's the national capital. There is plenty of hot tea, chang (mild local beer), and stew for anyone who needs to warm up. Under the stadium is a museum detailing the history of baseball in the Sherpa Empire. It is common for government officials or members of the royal family to attend games, especially since the new Empress is a baseball fan.

MD 9 vs. Cassadaigua
Mandarin Park
Nanjing, Jiangsu Territory
Capacity 61,443
Mandarin Park is the home stadium of the Nanjing Mandarins. It is known for its sleek modern design and was voted as having the best food of any ballpark in the Sherpa Empire. There are a wide variety of dumplings, potstickers, spring rolls, and steamed buns. The stands are decorated with red Chinese lanterns, giving the park a bit of local flair. Because it is a large park, it doesn't get many home runs. Weather in Nanjing is usually cool and damp this time of year, but not bitterly cold.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my run-scorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: Generally yes, but try to keep any variations somewhat realistic
Follow my Pitching Rotation: Follow what I have posted
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Occasional minor injuries are OK, ask first if you want to do anything major
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: If you eject a similar number of your own, and/or it's a character that I've RPed being a dumbass.
DH used at home: No
Godmod other events: No
Other Info: My team are conservative base-runners (not a lot of stealing or getting caught stealing) and they aren't too fixated on pitch counts. They usually plan on having the starter pitch 7 innings. This can vary depending on how the pitcher is doing, but pitch count doesn't play a big role in the decision.
