Culture Shock Thread: Resurrection

There used to be a thread game on F7 that involved culture-shocking the AN. Unfortunately, that thread has been autopruned and so I’ve chosen to try and revive it.

The game is simple: culture-shock the AN/Above Nation! The AN posts a cultural fact or practice or something like that, and it’s your job to try and, well, culture-shock them with your own fact or practice or whatever! Make sure it’s relevant to YN/Your Nation’s culture, though, not necessarily something about the wider world or canon where YN exists.

Since I can’t really culture-shock the void, I’ll just state something about TTL’s British culture: the monarch of the United Kingdom is ‘elected’ by a council of earls and bishops from among the previous monarch’s family. This council and system is modelled on the pre-Norman Witangemot, who supposedly elected the kingdom’s monarchs.

[Feyrisshire]

Every 7-8 PM in Feyrisshire television (or much longer than that because Feyris newscasters are not known to stick well to schedules), on Froggy TV the Froggy Nightly News is much watched across the nation.

It is nothing like CNN, BBC or Fox News broadcasts.

The music intro of the news is very a e s t h e t i c and is a space disco jazz-funk that sounds like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hekbjALJPOc&t=353s

During the jazz-funk intro, scenes of Froggy City are shown and then the camera hovers to big statues of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao Zedong. Then portraits are shown and faces of the 5 Communist leaders are getting closer to the camera while a cheery funk jazz disco plays in the background.

Then after that, (while the Vaporwave music still plays in the background), a bunch of faeries and catgirls are shown and a narrator says the iconic opening "The Socialist Dictatorship of the Feyrisshire is built on the alliance of the peasantry and the proletariat" and something like that and shows 2 catgirls holding a hammer and sickle.

Then after the opening segment that is like 5-10 minutes long, the two newscasters, who are always 2 anime catgirls like Hololive and Vshojo Vtubers, or maybe an e-girl who looks like Belle Delphine says "Nyan"!~ and bows to the audience, then the news starts.

The content of the news itself is as surreal and absurd as the opening intro and the newscasters with frequent condemnations of imperialism, fascism, the bourgouisie, reactionaries and imperialism coupled with Communist propaganda.

[Kyria]

While the state news agency, the Kyrian Broadcasting Corporation (name subject to change), is widely watched and the ‘main’ source of news and significant occurrences for many, there are multiple private news agencies that operate in Kyria. One of these is Sheng-hej!, a digital news agency founded by Chinese-descended Kyrians and Chinese expats - it also makes use of V-Tuber like personalities. Contrary to Froggy Nightly News, Sheng-hej! is noted as being very down to earth and anti-authoritarian (this would include vehement anti-communism) and does a lot of work online lobbying for free speech, democracy and journalism in countries where these are in short supply. It broadcasts in Mandarin and other languages which are dominant in countries under authoritarian regimes.

Sky Reaver society as opposed to a pre-revolution one is highly socially egalitarian. While classes are still present, they are far less distinct, and snobbery is almost nonexistant. Still, Cowboy republic is slightly less egalitarian than Chillax Dudes, whose culture is a mix of metalheads, frat bros, rastas, pagans, punks and hippies. The CRT/FAE anarcho-syndicalists, and Neoners, the tech savvy cyberpunk aesthetic folks.

Any child that dies too young is buried in the trunk of a tree forming what we call the Angry Molesting trees as the new creature combines the soul of the child with that of the plant.

Young children are traditionally given burials in the event of a tragic passing. Some are cremated, though most families opt for burials. These burials are conducted in accordance with the religious affiliation of the family/parents, though the default custom is Christian.

Upon finishing secondary school, young men are then required to serve a year in the military - this is considered to be just as much as part of their education. Additionally, many classes that a compulsory for male students (and elective for females) are designed to prepare them for their year of military service. Upon completing their year of service, they have the option to return to civilian life or remain with the military. Either way, they are required to keep their government issued weapons.

This also serves as a practical deterrent against invaders - to have a nation where half of the adult civilians maintain a weapon with at least a year of military training under their belts.

Deserts in Apanalua are regarded as a desolate wasteland, used for solar energy and a path way to Gnam Sa Cha, and rather than creating jewellery, the Apanaluan desert's economy relies on tourists curious about nomadic life or visiting Gnam Sa Cha, Pilgrims on a pilgrimage to mentioned state, or in one of the regions, manufacturing, although it's being outsourced to Zhengguo or Asia.

We have extremely close ties with the fae. But the fae aren't entirely ruralist here - a number live in cities too. We like hiring the fae for lots of things, including working in cities as kidnappers, assassins, security, and more. Our relationship with the fae is on a capitalist basis - each of us gets something out of the relationship which helps our economy. (And trade with the fae makes up the majority of our profits.)
