Invest in a Banana Republic! [Past Tech]

Postby Mareyland » Wed Mar 16, 2022 7:16 pm

Honduragua is currently experiencing civil unrest, motivated by foreign domination of its economy. As such, this thread is now
CLOSED TO ANY NEW INVESTMENTS pending the outcome of the conflict.

It is the year 1903. After many, many years of instability, the Republic of Honduragua is safe and open for foreign investment!

Honduragua is a hispanophone nation located in the tropics. It is a former colony of the Kingdom of Maldonia which gained independence in 1805, but suffered from a series of violent changes in government. But, at last, it seems that the nation has achieved some stability. Unfortunately that means that the great riches of the land - deposits of copper and silver, forests of timber, and fertile soils for coffee, bananas, tobacco, and sugar - have been largely underdeveloped.

To become a modern nation, Honduragua requires a modern economy. President Jose Avellanos is willing to grant considerable concessions to foreign banks, investors, and corporations who can bring in the capital to make this dream into a reality.

National Information
Image
Honduragua is divided into three regions: the lowlands, the Cordillera, and the Mosquito Coast.

The lowlands are where the majority of the people live. This area is a mixture of rainforests and fertile plains. The region is drained by the Colee River, which flows out to the Tempestia Ocean. The Cordillera is a mountainous region, with cloud forests of oak, pine, ferns, and orchids. It is less populous and less economically developed, though there is good soil for growing coffee. The Mosquito Coast in the southeast is a large area of swamps and mangroves, with inland savannah that is often covered by shallow water during the wet season. This is the least populated and least developed region.

The people of Honduragua are majority mixed-race, with heritage from the Maldonian colonizers and the indigenous Paztec people who they conquered. There are also two other indigenous groups in the country: the Bibaro, who live in small villages in and near the Cordillera, and the Arumbaya, who eke out a living in the Mosquito Coast. Catholic Christianity is the dominant religion, though often infused with elements of native pagan rituals and beliefs.

Opportunities for investment include:

The purchase of land for commercial use - Honduragua has fertile soils, dense rainforests, and rich mineral deposits. Foreign buyers can purchase land at low costs, so long as they promise to develop it. Honduraguans are hard-working people, so labor will not be a problem.
Potential uses for Honduraguan land include:
  • plantations (coffee, bananas, oranges, sugar, tobacco, palm oil)
  • farms (rice, maize, cassava, beans)
  • mines (copper and silver)
  • cattle ranches (beef and leather)
  • lumber mills (tropical timber)
Investing in Honduragua’s future - Honduragua needs financial capital. Investors who purchase bonds, invest in Honduraguan corporations, or otherwise inject capital into the nation will not only receive the gratitude of President Avellanos, but also be assured that their investments will be safe, secure, and profitable.
Potential opportunities for investment include:
  • providing loans to the Honduraguan government
  • investing in Honduraguan businesses and factories
  • the construction of churches, schools, hospitals, and other facilities and institutions to help the Honduraguan people
Those wishing to invest in Honduragua’s future need only fill out this application:

OOC: This is designed to set up a future RP, where these investments will come under threat. Making an investment does not mean you are obligated to participate in that future RP, but this way I hope to have at least a few people with pre-established connections to get involved.

NS stats are canon. We are not a copy of the United States of America, just a nation with American elements. The large star in the middle of our flag is to symbolize the executive nation as a uniting force while the crown above is to symbolize that this executive nation also has central banking powers. We are still a democratic republic, with a president, two houses of congress, and a judicial branch.

To Mr. Chinelo & Mr. Akinwande:

Sirs, thank you for your consideration of Honduragua's future.

While you are welcome to sponsor immigration into Honduragua, I must caution against your scheme. For one, too many native-born Honduraguans are currently without jobs, and it is my patriotic duty to ensure that the people of Honduragua are first in line to benefit from the opportunities that foreign investment will bring. For another, I worry about the social effects of importing a large number of darker-skinned people into my country. It could cause tensions which would threaten the hard-won stability we have achieved.

Nonetheless, I would be equally remiss if I rejected this opportunity entirely. Therefore, I will make other potential investors aware of your proposal, and if they determine that imported labor would be necessary or beneficial to their plans, they are more than welcome to engage your services to bring black workers into the country.

Javier Coronel Vallardo,

Let me start by Introducing myself and who I represent. I am Frederick Henderson, and I am either the sole or majority owner of many Ibican corporations, most notably the United Western Railroad, that specialize in transportation, lumber, and mining. I have founded a new group, the Ibica Honduragua Company, to oversee ventures that I would like to herein propose within your nation that I believe could greatly benefit ourselves, but also the people of Honduragua. Firstly, I would like to propose the incorporation of the Ibican International Forestry Company, which shall start out with logging operations around San Theodoros and Lumbermills in Olivaro. Secondly, I would like to Propose the incorporation of the Honduragua and Tempestia Railroad, which would construct rail roads and telegraph wires between the two cities, as well as eventually expand down the Colee River to Maguadora and Sulaco. The H & T Railroad would operated freight and passenger rail services intended not just to serve the interests of the IHC, but also serve the local population with improved mobility, as well as serve the other companies seeking to expand into the Honduraguan economy. Finally, I am also proposing the creation of the IHC Community Fund, which will use some of the profits of the business arms of the IHC to invest back into the communities we serve, as well as lend to the development of industries we do not own, such as the port of Sulaco. I hope that I have adequately expressed our intensions here, and that you would find them to be agreeable with the policies of your nation. I look forward to working together soon.

Frederick Henderson
CEO & President
Ibica Honduragua Company

Name of Investor: Ibica Honduragua Company
Nation of Origin (if individual or corporation): The United States of Ibica
Type of Investment: Logging Operations around San Theodoros and Lumber Mills in Olivaro under the name "Ibican International Forestry Co." Additionally, Railroad and Telegraph Wires connecting the towns to support operations. Incorporation of the "Honduragua and Tempestia Railroad" to operate freight and passenger trains between the two cities; Eventual expansion to Maguadora and Sulaco, as well as investment in the Port of Sulaco at that time. Both of these companies will invest in the communities they serve to improve their local image.
Reason for Investment: Stated: Mutual enrichment through economic activities. Unstated: Increasing Ibica's International footprint.
Any special concerns or requests?: None other at this time.

Dear Mr. Vallardo,
thank you for replying.

However, Jaiyesemi Akinwande is a female, not male. She is my wife.

On the subject of immigration, we are intending to populate sparsely-populated areas with these immigrants, and develop new towns; we also wish to introduce new foods to your nation, such as jollof rice, gbegiri, ekuru, and meat dishes such as tsire. I appreciate that there may be social effects, but we have had our own problems too with immigrants, however, it has taken a long time for them to settle in and still does. As it is, we are a territory of West Bromwich Holme.

I am intending to create new towns which will have their own factories producing alcohol and tobacco, plus also new farms to raise sheep and also timber yards to produce furniture. These will employ local people.

These new villages are intended to have a population that will be determined by you, rather than us, and employ locals; we will only employ a few immigrant workers to build the factories and farms in the area.

I appreciate the time you have taken to reply to me.

Signed,

Chukwuma Chinelo

To Frederick Henderson:

Sir, thank you for your generous investment in Honduragua's future.

I am happy to offer a charter to the Ibica Honduragua Company for the development of timber industry in San Theodoros and Olivaro, as well as the construction of railroad connections between those cities and eventually extending to Maguadora and Sulaco. In regard to this secondary objective, I also wish to make you aware that the Mareyland Incorporated Bank of Annesburg has already offered to invest a considerable sum in the construction of railroads between Sulaco and Olivaro. I hope that your efforts can intertwine, for the benefit of Honduragua.

In recognition of your forward-thinking generosity, I would also like to offer you a gift: the government is currently in possession of a large estate outside the city of Sulaco. It was once the home of a Maldonian colonial official, but was seized during the revolution. I have been authorized to deed the estate to you, for your personal use.

Your loan will be invaluable to financing government projects to improve Honduragua and its people. As for your proposal to expand a port, this would be most helpful in making Tecala a port equal to that of Sulaco.

In answer to your question regarding railroad gauges, our existing railroad network is narrow-gauge. However, it is old and in need of replacement. We have had several other offers to assist in the construction of railroads in our country - since you have also offered to help improve the port of Tecala, it would be equally beneficial to improve the rail connections between that port and the city of Sulaco.

In preparation for the foreign investment initiative, President Avellanos commissioned studies on the suitability of fertile Honduraguan land for different crops. According to those studies, the best locations for growing cocoa would be in the region south of the capital city of Olivaro and west of the city of San Theodoros. First, I apologize for the mistake in address.

As regarding your clarified proposal, I believe this would be acceptable to my government. Such communities would be best located in the region southwest of the cities of Olivaro and San Theodoros. This area has long been sparsely populated, due in part to less desirable terrain and in part to the risks of hostility from partly uncivilized tribes like the Arumbaya.

If your immigrants do not shirk at such dangers, they will find land where they can forge new destinies.

Name of Investor: A Joint Venture By the Aháàng Department of Diplomacy, The Temple of Greater Unity & The Merchant & Laborers' Guilds
Nation of Origin (if individual or corporation): Zaambate Té Aháà
Type of Investment: We propose to construct a small settlement in the Mosquito Coast's Southwest, mere miles from the borders to both the lowlands as well as La Cordillera. This settlement, name to be determined, will act as an industrial gateway to the most bounteous of Honduragua, populated by Aháàng workers and merchants (very many of whom already speak Spanish comprehensively) seeking to make a fortune for many men, Aháàng clergy who will tend to their needs, and native Honduraguan workers and settlers who are bold enough to aid their cultural and economic expansion into the ways and means of civilized nations. Expanding outwards from this settlement will be encampments and outposts deeper into the territory of each region, in order to make the most of the providence at hand and construct lumbers mills, farms, hunting lodges, mines, and even research stations for our doctors and yours to advance prevention of diseases indigenous to the three regions. Perfectly situated, this settlement will fuel expansion into the Cordillera, and provide enough vital resources to fuel both our economies.
Reason for Investment: To expand the economic output and civil capabilities of Honduragua in a manner that is beneficial to Honduragua, Aháà, and potentially many others, and to ensure the spread and mixture of cultures foreign and domestic for the benefit of both cultures.
Any special concerns or requests?: The specifics of the governance and maintainance of this settlement will of course be fleshed out mutually, by all interested parties, to ensure the fair gain of both, the investor, as well as the nation at hand.

Name of Investor: The Federal Government of Bakaviaa
Nation of Origin: (if individual or corporation): Republic of Bakaviaa
Type of Investment: The Federal Government of Bakaviaa wishes to purchase land for agricultural purposes from the sovereign nation of Honduragua
Reason for Investment: Many of the fertile Bakaviaan lands previously usable for agriculture have been turned over to mining companies and other non agricultural industries. This has led to a stagnation and decline of Bakaviaa's once prosperous agricultural sector. The Republic of Bakaviaa finds it difficult to reclaim land for agricultural without hurting its growing economy, so now aims to build closer relationships with other nations and import more food.
Any special concerns or requests?: The Republic of Bakaviaa will be sending Oliver Mathurst, a renowned and influental figure in Bakaviaa's agricultural community to oversee the project. The government of Bakaviaa also wishes that all workers must be of the lowest classes of Honduragua, to better lift up the people, as are the wishes of the forefathers of Bakaviaa.

Name of Investor: National Bakaviaan Rail and Road Corporation
Nation of Origin (if individual or corporation): Republic of Bakaviaa
Type of Investment: Public and Cargo rail transportation. Road Infrastructure between Honduragua's isolated communities.
Reason for Investment: The NBRRC has been widely successful in Bakaviaa in creating public transportation networks for its citizens. The NBRRC now aims to expand internationally and help propel other nations into modernity. If cargo infrastructure contracts are granted to other corporations, the NBRRC still hopes for the government of Honduragua to take them on for public transportation systems.
Any special concerns or requests?: The NBRRC asks for exclusive rights to manage the rail and road networks it builds as well as the possible public transportation systems it develops. The NBRRC will collect 100% of the profits generated by the systems until the projects have payed back 75% of the financial costs invested. From then on, handling will be given to the government of Honduragua and the % of profits taken by the NBRRC will decline by 5% each year until it stops at 25%. Olivia Trayn will be overseeing NBRRC's operations in Honduragua. The NBRRC expects tax breaks from the Honduraguan government, to allow the NBRRC to operate more efficiently.

Name of Investor: National Bakaviaan Developments Inc.
Nation of Origin (if individual or corporation): Republic of Bakaviaa
Type of Investment: Affordable housing and low density commercial developments in Honduragua's capital of Olivaro.
Reason for Investment: National Bakaviaan Developments wish to further their international investments.
Any special concerns or requests?: The NBD asks the Honduraguan government to finance 40% of the project and allow the developments to occur in a tax free enviorment. After construction is complete and leased to Honduraguan citizens, 40% of all profits will go to the Honduraguan government. Jayane Singhe will be overseeing the NBD's projects in Honduragua.

To the Gentlemen from Zaambate Té Aháà:

Sirs, thank you for your generous investment in Honduragua's future.

I must admit, your proposal generated quite a deal of conversation within the halls of our government. There was concern that this represented an attempt to colonize Honduragua by subterfuge, by establishing a foreign fiefdom within our borders. However, President Avellanos urged his government ministers to put aside their concerns, and consider the proposal in good faith.

It has been decided that we will grant your request. Your community will face challenges: the terrain of the region you propose to settle in is rough. The people of the Mosquito Coast are barely civilized. However, I believe that, should your settlers rise to the challenges which they will face, then this initiative promises to extend the light of civilization into a dark corner of our country.

Viva Honduragua! Viva Avellanos!

To the Government of Bakaviaa:

Sirs, thank you for your generous investment in Honduragua's future.

We are happy to hear that you will be helping to develop our agricultural sector. Honduragua boasts fertile soil, where any number of foodstuffs can be grown. As for your desire to employ the lowest of our citizens, I am sure that the poor of Honduragua will be eager to find stable employment working in your fields.

To the National Bakaviaan Rail and Road Corporation:

Sirs, thank you for your generous investment in Honduragua's future.

We have had many generous offers regarding the constructions of railroads in our nation. Based on the existing proposals for investment, we would be willing to grant your corporation a contract for the construction of railroads to connect the following cities: Tecala to San Theodoros, Tecala to Maguadora, and Tecala to Olivaro.

Your terms regarding profit-sharing and taxes are acceptable.

To the National Bakaviaan Developments Corporation:

Sirs, thank you for your generous investment in Honduragua's future.

Our capital city is currently blighted by shantytown slums on its outskirts. These sad communities are the unfortunate legacy of many long years of instability and war, which has stunted construction and development. It is the hope of my government that your initiative will help to improve not only the health and image of our capital city, but also the lives of the people who call it home.

It is with great pride and gratitude that I announce that my government has determined that, thanks to the generous investments from many foreign corporations, the Republic of Honduragua is no longer in need of additional infrastructure investment. We remain open for business for those seeking to purchase land for commercial use, provide loans, and invest in other business or development opportunities.

To clarify the existing agreements, the newly created Office of Transportation has drawn up the following map, showing the proposed railroad construction:

Image
The lines in red are railroads to be built by the Ibica Honduragua Company
The line in blue is the railroad to be built by the Erloanean Railway Cooperation
The lines in orange are the railroads to be built by the National Bakaviaan Rail and Road Corporation
The lines in green are the railroads to be built by the York Company of Auxington

The placement of those lines is purely for information purposes and does not correspond to the actual location of the railroads.

To the Gentlemen from Auxington:

Sirs, thank you for your generous investment in Honduragua's future.

Honduragua welcomes your investment in its natural wealth. Our most recent and thorough studies, which President Avellanos has commissioned in anticipation of foreign investment, show that our nation has vast deposits of copper and silver which remain untapped. While some of these deposits are in the mountainous Cordillera, and would require considerable investment to exploit, the profits to be had are surely worth the expense. For such projects, I have been authorized to offer you a contract for the construction of railroads to connect the city of Balio, commonly known as the "Gateway to the Mountains," and the cities of eastern Honduragua - specifically Olivaro, and/or Maguadora.

Unfortunately, I must decline your proposal for the construction of a new port. It is the belief of my government that the ports of Sulaco and Tecala are sufficient for our nation's needs - or they will be, with additional development. I suggest instead that your company consider helping my country to improve and expand the port of Sulaco, which would benefit your proposed mining operations.

To the Most Honorable and Kind Javier Coronel Vallardo, Minister of Finance and Trade

We are delighted and most relieved to assure you that Sr. Avellanos' good faith will not be betrayed by the Aháàng. Indeed, any governor and further governance is quite negotiable, and subject to your president's discression. In mutual good faith, allow for me to at length inform you of the settlers and their assignment; again, they are farmers and miners majorly, but at heart they are all adventurers who will be selected for their love of their fellowmen, and they will be directed to cohabitate with the natives not only peaceably, but profitably if at all possible as well.

In facing these issues, our solutions are many. First, that the Aháàï is a natural diplomat, and will seek to engage the natives in trade. Failing diplomacy, we do request that with this band of primary settlers a small detachment be assigned primarily for the formation of hunting parties, but also, transparently, in case relations with those indigenous to the Coast prove less than favorable. The size and armament of this detachment, again, is at Sr. Avellanos' discretion, and also his disposal, though we do request ample armaments be allowed for defense, and for hunting.

The settlers will land at Sulaco, and spend no more than a month there as they make certain of their rations and other such necessary preparations, while also attempting to recruit mappers, translators, trackers, and other natives of all stock, Paztec, Honduraguan, and all otherwise. For this month's duration, they will assist as they may in their free time on constructing the rail from Sulaco to Maguadora, before themselves departing for a similar process in Maguadora; they will be there no more than a week to recruit and take second inventory, and both these things they will do again when they spend a week in Olivaro. After a week in Olivaro, they will depart, full of team and stock, on their arduous journey Southwet from there.

They shall waste no time upon arriving at the location of the settlement to be, and on the day after their arrival they shall commence clearing the land for farm, pasture, and timbur, and it is suspected they will be ready to build permanent structures, if all goes well, in a matter of a week or two. It is our hope that this settlement, which we propose to name San Cassio, after the patron Saint of Aháà, will act as a gateway between the wilds and Honduragua proper, as a launching point for further expansion into the wilds where all may rest and restock, and for its close proximity to the choicest of resources in each region available.

We thank you again, kind sirs, for your blessings, and we assure you by the nature of the mission, if a profit is turned, it is Honduragua and its inhabitants who will reap any rewards coming long before they come to the far shores of Aháà. We look forward with eager anticipation to our cooperation, and for further negotiations and ammendments to our plans, as well as talks of nationalizing the bold Aháàng who will be leading this foray into the Mosquito Coast. Thank you, again, and may all the gods pour their kindness unto you.

Blessings,
The Joint Benefactors of the San Cassio Expedition of Zaambate Té Aháà

To Mr. Bahns:

Sir, thank you for your generous investment in Honduragua's future.

I am happy to facilitate the purchase of prime banana-growing lands for your corporation. However, your wish to do so in the Mosquito Coast region is not feasible. That region is unsuitable for large-scale agriculture - that land which is not covered in festering swamps floods regularly during the rainy season. I will provide your company with a list of possible alternative locations to choose from, mostly located near the coastline north of Sulaco.

OFFICIAL MISSIVE FROM THE ROYAL CROWN OF
THE KINGDOM OF COUNTESIA

The Kingdom of Countesia would like to congratulate the nation of Honduragua on finally achieving a stable government. Countesia too shares a history of political turbulence, which was only resolved with a firm hand. Thus, we share great sympathy to the plight of your nation.

Therefore, Countesia would like to officially donate §500,000 Countic Marks worth of gold bullion to the national bank, or equivalent, of Hondouraga, in order to establish a stable gold reserve in which to base its currency on. We ask for no payment in return. Our only request is that Honduragua provides Countesia with a discounted rate on its freshly harvested crops, many of which do not grow well in our more temperate climate.

Should you accept, the gold bullion will be transported to Honduragua via the transport ship SS Tongham, escorted by the battleships RCS Cadmus and RCS Bulwark.

We hope this is the beginning of a fruitful relationship between our nations.

Yours sincerely

King Dorian I of Countesia

It is encouraging to hear how thoroughly you have planned your arrival and journey through our nation. This gives me hope for the success of your venture.

As to your request for protection, President Avellanos has assigned a company of our National Guard, under Captain Ramon Alcazar, to accompany your settlers. Captain Alcazar will also serve as the provisional governor of your settlement, and serve as the liaison between your people and the government of our Republic. I look forward to hearing of your arrival, and your success.
