Ukrainian Invasion Thread II: Sunrise on the Dnieper

Postby Farnhamia » Sun Feb 27, 2022 8:43 pm

We’re four days into the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping, but it certainly shows a few signs of slowing down.

Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 23, 2022, and Russian forces have pushed into a sizable chunk of Ukrainian territory. Despite Russia’s initial success, Ukraine has proven a tougher nut to crack than expected and is fiercely resisting the Russian invasion, especially in the capital of Kyiv. Stories like the Ghost of Kyiv and legends like the Snake Island Crew have only bolstered Ukrainian resistance.

Ukraine, for their part, has successfully appealed to western nations. Heavy sanctions have been applied to Russia -- threatening Putin's base -- and Ukraine is getting arms and humanitarian support from multiple countries, including Germany, the US, the UK, Turkey, Italy, and Canada, among others. Schisms have erupted in the halls of the Russian elite, with multiple governmental figures and oligarchs condemning Russia's invasion. Despite Russia cracking down on dissent, protests have still erupted across the country in protest towards the war.

Will Ukraine hold? Will Russia take Kyiv? Time will tell…

Ukranian forces have apparently managed to capture a Pantsir S1

Seems like a big win, especially morale wise for the Ukrainians that they are managing to capture even advanced systems like this relatively intact

Oh snap, that's a nice boone for the air war.
Luxembourg's luck has finally turned in their favor, and the German nation has forced to concede to a collaboration government with the Luxembourgish, creating the great nation of Luxenermy. Now, that luck has extended to the German people as well. A great time for both peoples.

BREAKING: Athens says it has evidence that Russia bombed Greek village in Mariupol, Ukraine

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson has denied the Russian claim that it was not responsible for the bombing of a Greek village in Mariupol, eastern Ukraine, but saying that they have “evidence.”

A meeting under the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was held today at the Maximos Palace with the participation of the Minister of National Defence Nikos Panagiotopoulos and the Chief of the Greek military, General Konstantinos Floros.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the military situation in Ukraine.

With his decision, Greece responded to the request of Ukraine, in consultation with its allies in NATO and partners in the EU, to send defence equipment with two C-130s transport aircraft, which will depart for Poland.

Also during the day, significant humanitarian aid will be sent, which will be accompanied by the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Nikos Hardalias.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of the Prime Minister Grigoris Demitriadis and Ambassador Anna-Maria Boura.

Meanwhile, the Greek Foreign Ministry condemned the Russian attacks in Ukraine that cost the lives of ten ethnic Greek, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexandros Papaioannou told SKAI TV.

Papaioannou stressed that it is unacceptable for civilians to be killed and reiterated that the Russian ambassador in Athens will be summoned to the Foreign Ministry today.

He stated that Athens has evidence that what the Russian Embassy invoked yesterday is false.

It is recalled that the Embassy claimed that on the outskirts of the village of Sartana, where ethnic Greeks were killed, there were no Russian forces operating.

“Orthodox bombs killed Orthodox expatriates,” said a spokesman for the Greek Foreign Ministry. “Remember this thing.”

“And what the Russian embassy said is fake news,” he said, adding: “We have evidence.”

Ten ethnic Greeks were killed in the Mariupol area of eastern Ukraine yesterday, specifically in Sartana and Buhas.

Although Moscow claims they were killed by the Ukrainian neo-Nazi Azov Battalion that operates in the area and killed an ethnic Greek as recently as two weeks ago for speaking Russian, Athens denied this allegation by saying it has evidence – that it is yet to present.

Mitsotakis: Unacceptable act of Russian attack on civilians

“The death of our compatriots causes sadness and anger for this unacceptable act of Russian attack on civilians,” the Greek Prime Minister tweeted.

“Condolences to their loved ones, he said, adding: “The Greek Consulate in Mariupol remains open to provide assistance.”

even still, that is one expensive and important piece of kit, and even if it isnt battle ready, its still a big win to capture it in a relatively intact state. it may not be battle ready, but theres enough still there to disassemble and figure out how it works.

Did anybody post this btw on the old thread? One of Russia’s main news sites accidentally posted their “victory” article, and it’s a wild freaking read. Hardly the words of a sane nation, it must be said.

Probably not a good sign for the Russians if their soldiers are even abandoning equipment that advanced though. Especially since they haven’t yet started the big attack that’s anticipated.

I hope Russia is stalled in its progress enough to give Ukraine some serious negotiation power, and that the diplomats are top notch. I can give only hope for the civilians caught in the crossfires, and spread the news on this heinous act on Russias part to my friends and colleagues

Yeah I read it’s translations, super schitzo. Putting Ukraine in its ‘natural state’ - wonder what they think that natural state of the rest of Eastern Europe is. It’s sick.

Maybe if they spent less time writing their victory speeches for after the war and more time actually getting ready to win the war, they’d be doing better right now.

I've been trying to work out if the 'big attack' is on the table.

The whole incursion so far has been... weird.

There's no real back-up plan, the columns were largely unsupported, the armor and the infantry are operating independently, there's no real air support, very little artillery support...

This makes sense if the plan was literally just to power into Kyiv and declare victory. It makes sense if the plan was just to occupy the contested territories and dig in.

So either the plan changed last minute, or the whole strategy was completely misplaced...

...or this is a diversion.
