2022: A Decade of Uncertainty (OOC)

2022: A Decade of Uncertainty

Image

IC||Map: Coming soon

The 2020s. A decade set to be nightmarish and a turning point in the history of humanity. Climate Change is the existential threat that must urgently be tackled in this decade, and humanity must learn to cope with the constantly growing population that does not look likely to slow down let alone stop growing anytime soon.

In Asia, the Chinese Dragon is emerging as the regional hegemon, pushing regional nations to choose sides between them and the West while internally the regime battles against resistance in Hong Kong and ethnic tension in the far West, while also pushing claims on Taiwan, stoking regional flames. In India, the nation is dealing with religious unrest and rapid economic growth and modernization as well as increasing tension along the border with Pakistan, particularly in the Kashmir Region. Japan has continued to cause consternation with its neighbors after proudly displaying the Rising Sun flag at the Tokyo Olympics.

In Europe, Euroskepticism is on the rise in many European nations. The successful Brexit referendum led to the charge showing Euroskeptics all across the continent that leaving was possible. In Spain regional tensions threaten to explode between Madrid and Barcelona while Poland and the Visegrad Group continue to openly defy the EU.

In the Middle East, tensions between Israel and Iran are at an all-time high. Adding to this is the emerging regional cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In Yemen, the civil war still burns as a testing ground for this regional cold war.

In Africa, ethnic and religious tensions pose a danger all over the continent. In the Congo, warlords fight over land and resources like coltan offering fortunes on the international market. In the Saraha and Sahel regions, remnants of ISIS and other organizations ravage the land and people. Ethiopia and Egypt are at each other's throats over the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam by Ethiopia. Yet there are lights of hope that still sparkle.

In North America, Canada is dealing with ever-increasing political divides much like the US to the South. Inside the US tensions between Republicans and Democrats have never seemed worse. In Mexico, the Cartels fight hard against the central government in Mexico City their corruption touches most parts of the nation.

In Latin America, the dictator Nicholas Maduro still clings to power even as his position is contested by Juan Guaidó. In Colombia, an unstable peace agreement official holds peace between the government and FARC.

How will the nations of the world tackle these issues? How will their pasts define their future, which nations will come out on top during this decade, and how will future generations remember this critical decade?

In this roleplay, you will take the helm of the nation of your choice. You have the ability to change the history of your nation from 1991 onwards within realism and with a few major event exceptions as well as anything states in the OP or other applications.

Other Military Information: The warming relations between the US and USSR has resulted in China feeling more hemmed in by foreign powers. Like a cornered tiger, the CCP leadership has responded the only way they know how: aggressively. Where once the PRC would feign restraint, now they are blatantly aggressive. Under Xi Jinping’s leadership, the military budget has been double what it was IRL, with corresponding improvements to military equipment and readiness. Military forces routinely posture near Taiwan and PLAN Marines use artificial islands in the South China Sea to practice amphibious assault operations.

Alliances (If different from IRL):

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP): History remained mostly unchanged for the People’s Republic of China until Xi Jinping came to power in 2013. Xi Jinping saw the prior “Peaceful Rise” strategy of Hu Jintao, with its soft approach to foreign policy and lack of crackdowns on internal dissent, as weak, especially in the face of China being surrounded by a US-led alliance that, in 2008, expanded to include the USSR. Starting in 2013, Xi Jinping increased the defense budget by over 125%, from $103 billion to $232 billion. Since then, the budget has increased by approximately 7% a year, with the 2021 budget sitting at $399.31 billion. The 2022 budget, to be published in March, is expected to hit $427.26 billion. A consequence of this is that the People’s Liberation Army has achieved greater progress with its modernization efforts.

Domestically, the PRC has gone much further with repressive policies. The Social Credit System has, as many Western observers feared, been used by Xi Jinping’s government to suppress dissent. Additionally, following the 2019 Hong Kong protests, the CCP expelled many foreigners from Hong Kong and clamped a media blackout on the city. What little news did leak out of the cordon indicated a brutal police crackdown, with people beaten and arrested simply for being near the protesters. Despite repeated condemnations from foreign nations and human rights groups, the PRC maintains that the situation is a matter of internal security and that they recognize the power of no other organization to dictate how they enforce their own laws. In mid-2020, the National People’s Congress voted unanimously to deploy PLA units to Hong Kong, citing “foreign involvement inciting the citizens of the PRC to rebellion”.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

Leading up to 2015 remains the same, however conservative hardliners in the Likud party pushed the military to maintain strike operations against the Iranian nuclear program with regular planning and drills. Still concerned about Iranian militias, Israel continued to launch strikes against them in the region, extending as far as Iraq.

Despite facing pressure over numerous scandals, Prime Minister Netanyahu's Likud party won a majority in the 2020 election, allowing him to form a coalition government and continue his stint as Prime Minister. Besides other issues, voters focused on preventing a nuclear Iran and its proxies from threatening Israel, a pro-settlement agenda, as well as a push against Palestinian statehood. With a majority, the new government was able to pass a budget, pushing increased investment into clean energy, defense, and technology sectors. Working with different nations such as the USSR whom borders Iran, Israel has sought to press against Iran and its proxies. Cooperating with the USSR on a number of matters, Israel has developed strong relations with the Kremlin, whom previously allowed Israel freedom of action in the Middle East against Iranian threats as well as having moved its embassy to Jerusalem. With increasingly strong ties with the USSR, Israel recently has sought to increase trade and military cooperation, reportedly considering the purchase of Russian aircraft and missile technology. Providing aid during the March War, Israel has come to see a great ally in the USSR.

During March of 2021, a war broke out in Gaza, with the terror group known as Hamas attacking Israeli cities in a surprise rocket attack. Within five days of fighting, peace was brokered between the two sides, with no major concessions for either side. But the fighting was devastating for Gaza, with 1,306 airstrikes being carried out over the course of the conflict. With thousands dead, many more displaced, and Gaza's powerplant destroyed, the region came close to a humanitarian crisis until Israel let in humanitarian aid days later. Ever since, Israel has rebuilt from the relatively light damage caused, focusing on producing more Iron Dome interceptors, preparing to confront Hezbollah in Lebanon, and readying itself for strikes in Syria.

Economically Israel has begun considering possibilities of prospecting natural gas within the disputed maritime border with Lebanon, as well as increasing cooperation with other regional allies in trade.

GDP (PPP): $503.392 billion
Currency: Czechoslovak koruna (CSK)

Military Information: The Czechoslovak National Defence Forces (ČSNO/TNV/CNE) mostly resembles both the modern-day Czech Army and the modern-day Slovak Army, albeit with the inclusion of a militarized border guard and the so-called "Regional Defence Forces" (Regionální Obranné Síly/Regionálne Obranné Sily/Regionalverteidigungskräfte/Regionális Védelmi Erők). The ČSNO has 54,800 actives (12,000 soldiers and 12,800 civilians) and 3,236 reserves. The ČSNO also has at least 20 patrol boats.

Alliances: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), European Union (EU) and Visegrad Group (V3)

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):
1989 - The Velvet Revolution occurs (same as IRL).
Early 1990 - Mikuláš Dzurinda is elected as head of the Slovak movement instead of Vladimír Mečiar. As Dzurinda is much more centrist and closer to the Czech, he is able to persuade the Czech to continue funneling money into Slovakia, provided they postpone talks of a split until 1994.
Late 1990 - With money from Czechia, Slovakia is able to develop its infrastructure and create a start up and privatization program with help from West Germany, this leads to increased levels of Slovak growth closing the once large gap between the Czech and Slovak economies over the next few years.
1991 - With the unification of Germany and division talks postponed, a movement arises in both northern and eastern Czechia among Bohemians to rejoin Germany. As protests erupt that summer, the Czech government agrees to a more devolved government in both northern and eastern Czechia.
1992 - The Slovak Magyars demand to be released to join Hungary, Slovakia seeks help from the Czechs, the Czechs agree and negotiate a similar devolution of powers agreement.
1993 - Growing demands from populations from all regions of the country demand talks to finally create a national unified government. A federal council system is created temporarily with the leaders from Bohemia (German-speaking Czechia), Czechia, Slovakia, and Felvidek (Upper Hungary) all getting representation. New elections lead to a more centrist government on all sides.
1994 - The federal council convenes in Vienna to discuss the possibility of split. The council creates a referendum, to create a devolved federation somewhat like Spain, or to separate and create 3 new nations. The referendum passes in favor of unification because:
Slovaks - no longer feel neglected by Czech government.
Czechs - no longer see the Slovaks as an economic burden and understand the ethnic tension due to the Bohemian movement.
Bohemians (Sudeten Germans) - don't see the Europeans as realistically letting them join Germany and don't feel threatened by the other groups in the country.
Felvidekians (Slovak Magyars) - start to see the rapid increase in corruption and authoritarianism in Hungary and no longer wish to join.
1995 - On January 1st 1995, the Czechslovak Parliament convenes in Prague, the capital of the nation, there are four official languages (Czech, Slovak, German and Hungarian). Like Belgium, the nation is divided into linguistically separate communities, whilst there is a national curriculum, the specifics of education are controlled by the linguistic communities. The nation is divided into four regions; Bohemia, with its capital in Pilsen (Plzeň); Czechia, with its capital in Brno; Slovakia, with its capital in Bratislava; and Felvidek, with its capital in Kassa (Košice). Prague is an independent city-state placed between Bohemia and Czechia (thus the Central Bohemian Region is divided between the two regions, while the city merges with both Praha-Západ and Praha-Východ to form a metropolitan area). Each region has a government (which includes a governor, a council of ministers and a regional legislature) and is divided into districts (who in turn are composed of municipalities).
1999 - Czechoslovakia joins NATO.
2004 - Czechoslovakia joins the European Union.
2006 - Czechoslovakia is recognized by the World Bank as a "developed country".
2007 - Czechoslovakia is affected by the Great Recession.
2009 - Czechoslovakia is ranked by the Human Development Index as a nation of "Very High Human Development".
2017 - A coalition government is formed by LSNS, ČSSD, ANO, BVP and MKP. Václav Horák, the head of the LSNS, becomes Prime Minister.
Early 2021 - The coalition government proposes and implements the Streaming Regulation Act, which was designed to regulate streaming services in Czechoslovakia. This leads to outrage among prominent streaming services and major companies, while protests against ANO and its leader, Finance Minister Andrej Babiš, continues to escalate.
Late 2021 - A new coalition government is formed by ODS, ČSL, KDI, STAN, ČPS, BVP and MKP. Petr Fiala, the head of the ODS, replaces Václav Horák as Prime Minister. The new government subsequently repeals the Streaming Regulation Act, while Andrej Babiš and his party are being investigated for political corruption.
2022 - Present-day.

Party in Power (If bicameral note who controls each): No party has control. The Parliament of Lebanon is evenly split between Christian and Muslims due to the Taif Agreement. However, certain parties do control the representation of their religious group in Parliament. Hezbollah controls all 27 Shi'ite seats. The Future Movement controls the 27 Sunni seats. All 64 allocated Christian seats are held by the Free Patriotic Movement after it opened up to become a broad coalition. The Progressive Socialist Party holds the 8 allocated Druze seats. Finally, the 2 Alawite seats are held by the Syrian Social Nationalist Party.

Alliances (If different from IRL): While Lebanon's Government doesn't have any alliances, Hezbollah is closely aligned with Assad's Syria, as well as Iran. Hezbollah is also aligned with many non-state actors, such as Hamas.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

1991: Two years after the Taif Agreement was thought to bring an end to sectarian violence, a bomb goes off in the city of Tripoli, killing over 50 people and wounding 200. The attack was clearly aimed at the Sunni Muslims who make up a majority of the population within the city. A few days later, another bomb goes off, this time within Beirut, where another 100 are either killed or wounded. A Christian majority area was targeted, and soon violence was starting to erupt all over the nation once again. The government, in fear of another civil war, and not wishing to see the nation fracture, quickly met and made a decision to separate the various groups through forced displacement. The new law was quickly voted on and passed. The UN denounced the forced displacement, but many within the nation would rather be moved to a new area, than risk ending up dead due to their religion.

It was agreed that the Shi'ites would have the Governorates of South Lebanon and Nabatieh. The Alawites would have the Akkar Governorates. The Christians would have the Governorates of Mount Lebanon and Keserwan-Jbeil. The Druze would be given the Beqaa Governate. The Governates of North Lebanon and Baalbek-Hermel would be given to the Sunnis. The only Governate not given to any specific group was the Beirut Governate, as the government would have complete control of the city, and the city would be open to all groups.

1991-2006: Much of Lebanon's history remains the same, except for the fact that the nation is practically 5 religious states, masquerading as a single entity. Each of these groups fight hard within Parliament to receive more funding than the rest.

2006-2010: After the 2006 war with Israel ended, Iran attempted to "rehabilitate" Hezbollah, and invested billions in hopes of securing a tight leash on the group. However, this backfired and Hezbollah, instead, became even more independent of Iran, opting to centralize power within itself, and around the Secretary General. While the group would still be aligned with Iran, it would not take direct orders from Tehran. It would merely ask for advice from the Supreme Leader, if it felt like such advice was needed. This distancing from Iran was welcomed by many with Lebanon, who were happy to see Iranian influence diminish. However, Hezbollah, as a group, still refused to disarm, citing the protection of Shi'ites and the continued occupation of the Shebaa Farms by Israel.

With funding that it received from various sources, Hezbollah provided much to the Shi'ite population it protects, with the building of schools, hospitals, and a variety of other programs. In 2008, the group began construction of a border wall around the two Governates that the Shi'ites live in, wishing to make it official that there'd be no non-Shi'ites allowed into their "controlled area." The wall would run all around the South Lebanon and Nabatieh borders, effectively shutting the two regions off from the rest of the nation and making Hezbollah a true "state within a state."

2011-Present: With the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War, Hezbollah deploys forces into Syria to support Assad. The Lebanese Government denounces this move, mainly the Christians, out of fear that such a move would cause sectarian violence to erupt once again inside the nation. The spillover of the Civil War did cause some violence, as refugees fled into Lebanon. The nation, still healing from past violence, was unable to handle the influx of refugees and shut the border.

During this time, the wall would be finished. The UN peacekeepers had no true way of preventing its construction. Hezbollah would also, over the next ten years, procure more arms, fortify more land, and overall, rearm more than it ever has before. This would shock the rest of the nation as the open and blatant procurement of arms would frighten many. Groups all across Lebanon would urge the government to step in, but out of fear, and not knowing if the military would win an armed conflict, the government allowed for the group to gain arms.

When it was clear that the government wouldn't step in, many began to arm themselves, which Hezbollah denounced. Security Forces would be quick in making sure no other group would end up armed and capable of fighting.

Overall: Lebanon is pretty much a bunch of religious states under one banner. Hezbollah is more powerful in this timeline due to the concentration of Shi'ites and the control they exert over the populace; they are also practically independent of Iran, overall pursuing their own policy and ambitions. Whether or not it has a lot more advanced missiles is based on Iran. Lebanon is focused on dealing with the refugees of the Syrian Civil War and a wide array of internal issues.

Anything I didn't put, you can assume stayed the same unless stated otherwise (such as the 2020 Beirut Explosion).

National Anthem: Ḥumāt ad-Diyār - “Guardians of the Homeland”. While the anthem itself has remained unchanged since Syria’s independence, the anthem was rewritten to replace the stanza praising the military with a stanza praising “the peoples of Syria”, as the Transitional Authority deemed the old version too militaristic.

Head of State: President Alaeddine Khaled (TWDS)
HoS Picture: WIP
Head of Government: Prime Minister Maryam Tawfiq (TWDS)
HoG Picture: N/A
Legislature Name: The Constituent Assembly, with a Chamber of Deputies consisting of the lower chamber and a Senate consisting of the upper chamber
Party in Power: A legislative coalition comprising of the left-wing Syrian National Democratic Alliance (TWDS) and Democratic Union Party (PYD), as well as the center-left Syrian Democratic People’s Party (SDPP) with a confidence and supply agreement from the progressive Syriac Union Party (SUP) holds power within the legislature.

GDP (PPP): $136 billion
Currency: Syrian pound (SYP)

Military Information: The Syrian Armed Forces are now overwhelmingly made up of divisions from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with Assad-era soldiers from the Syrian Armed Forces vetted and investigated for prior crimes against humanity or war crimes. As such, the final numbers are in flux. At the time of the conclusion of the Syrian Civil War, the FSA numbered around 50,000, while the SDF numbered around 150,000, while the Syrian Armed Forces were numbered at around 142,000 active personnel and 50,000 paramilitary personnel, though desertions and defections near the conclusion of the Syrian Civil War means specific numbers are currently unavailable. That being said, the Transitional Authority has committed to drawing down the militias and paramilitary groups, while iterating that they hope to have around 120,000 active personnel once all is said and done.

With regards to hardware, the Syrian Air Force post-Civil War now possess 403 aircraft, of which there are 150 fighters, 18 dedicated attack planes, 5 transports, 67 trainers, 134 helicopters, and 27 attack helicopters; the Navy was untouched, maintaining 56 total vessels, of which there are 33 patrol vessels and 7 mine warfare vessels; and the Syrian Army has 3,614 surviving tanks, 5,017 armored vehicles, 520 self-propelled artillery pieces, 2,187 towed artillery pieces, and 538 rocket projectors.

Alliances: Arab League

History Changes: Leading up to the 2011 Civil War, everything has remained the same. Unlike in this timeline, the Syrian National Council doesn't split from the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) and its Interim Government in 2013 when they sat down for talks with the Assad regime, ensuring that the foreign opposition doesn't fracture. In 2015, as with this timeline, the Syrian Democratic Forces declares northern Syria to be autonomous from the rest of Syria, embarking on a democratic experiment that was reminiscent of the Swiss model. Tensions did persist between the SDF and the Syrian National Coalition, though in this timeline, the two factions manage to maintain communication and relations, avoiding a breakdown in relations that would lead to a Turkish-backed SNC advancing into territory held by the SDF.

In this timeline, in January 2017, the SNC and the SDF would send their respective representatives to Amman, which both parties considered neutral ground. There, the two would hammer out the framework of an alliance to coordinate a response against ISIL, which they both viewed as an existential threat in their bids against the Assad regime. In this timeline, rather than seize Raqqa by themselves, the SDF is joined by fighters from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the four month siege lasting from June 6 - October 17, 2017. Taken off guard by the cooperation of the two factions, the Assad regime overplays its hand and sends troops to assault SDF positions near Afrin and the joint SDF-FSA positions near Raqqa, shortly after the Assad regime's own brutal victory in Deir ez-Zor against ISIL that November. While the Afrin front maintained its position, the Raqqa front repelled the regime's forces. Emboldened by these successes, the SNC and the political leadership of the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (DFNS) built on the Amman Agreement.

In January 2018, the DFNS and the SNC declared that in the event the Assad regime was toppled, the two would enter into a political agreement to establish a transitional authority. Both had to compromise: the DFNS/SDF would instead settle for a federal republic, as opposed to the direct democracy canton system, and would publicly and privately guarantee Turkey that it wouldn't fund Kurdish groups in Turkey, and the FSA would allow the SDF to maintain their control of Raqqa in exchange for FSA forces being granted free movement throughout SDF controlled territory, while adopting some of the DFNS's more progressive policies, and they promised to give SDF officers positions in the new Syrian military once the civil war was ended.

With the foreign recognition and resources of the SNC and the military prowess of the SDF, the new coalition, the Democratic Front of Syria, worked in tandem to repel the Assadist forces from Afrin. Ultimately, the regime's forces were pushed back, but aside from a few more territorial gains in northern Syria that would connect the disparate territory of the DFNS, the united opposition and the forces of the regime were stuck in a war of attrition. The climax of the civil war would come in mid-2018, when the Democratic Front of Syria lobbied hard with the United States, Turkey, the EU, and the Arab League for diplomatic and military support. While they gave their own assurances, they were very clear that they could not provide any overt military support while the USSR maintained its support for the Assad regime. Left with little choice, the Democratic Front of Syria made diplomatic overtures to the USSR. The opposition's representatives suggested that they could offer what Assad could not: stability. The opposition argued that the Assad model clearly could not work any longer, as it had sparked multiple rebellions and uprisings that threatened not just the region's stability, but the USSR's interests as well, as was indicative of the rise of ISIL. The opposition promised the USSR that if they did not support the Assad regime in whatever came next, the Democratic Front would remain neutral when it came to disputes between Washington and Moscow, and they further promised that the Soviet base in Tarsus would be allowed to remain and that, should they come into government, they would not demand the punishment of Soviet soldiers who participated in war crimes or crimes against humanity in Syria.

The Soviets would ultimately agree to allow the chips to fall where they may, and withheld critical support from the Assad regime. The Western and Arab response came swiftly, though it varied from air support to the provision of military hardware, military trainers, and financial aid to the Democratic Front. With these developments, the war for Syria was renewed, and over the next year, united Democratic Front forces pushed against Assadist forces. By the end of 2019, in the face of new anti-regime protests, an emboldened armed opposition, and the lack of Soviet support, Assadist forces began to collapse, facing desertions and defections to the Democratic Front reminiscent of the early days of the 2011 uprisings that seemed a lifetime ago. In April 2020, the Assad family fled Damascus for refuge in the USSR, and the Chief of Staff of the Syrian Armed Forces negotiated the peaceful surrender of the remaining pro-regime forces. The hardest part was over, but with a war-torn nation, an economy in ruins, and the legacy of brutality at the height of the civil war, the new government's position is still tenuous. A new democratic and federal constitution was agreed to, and the framework of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission has been established, and the first democratic elections of the newly christened People's Federal Republic are to be held in a few months.

Despite multiple threats to the fledgling republic by Israel and Assadists, on April 3, 2022, the first democratic elections of the People’s Federal Republic were held. What the future now holds for Syria is unclear, though many are hopeful for its future.

It'll just have Osama bin laden still leading it. Nothing too major. But most of the major Taliban leadership will be axed off throughout the post American 9-11 vengeance years.
It'll just be Osama bin laden left as like a major political figure within Afghanistan.

Osama bin Laden never led the Taliban, nor did he lead Afghanistan. If you’re gonna alt history a nation, learn its actual history first. Osama was the leader of Al Qaeda, which was sheltered in Afghanistan by the Taliban.
