Cheruene calls tie with Piraea a missed opportunity

Image
Results from today's game.
Nambabi -

Earlier today Lavana and Piraea faced off in the opening round of matches in the Women’s World Cup in Maucha and Garambura. The match saw the Lavanan team stunned by a minute 21 goal by Piraean number #10 Iris Tassatou, who caught goalkeeper Baizhan Vidimhe off position. The Cranes found themselves playing a defensive game for the rest of the half, which culminated in a crossbar strike by Vasia Paulidi near the end at minute 43. The Cranes attempted to gather themselves during the break and resumed play, achieving some good chances but with little result. At minute 55 a corner found its way into the back of Piraean goalie Ifigenia Maragopoulou net by a lucky head that found its way into Piraean defender Avgi Siskoglou leg, giving Lavana the tie. The match remained equally balanced, however the Cranes returned to their footing and were able to pressure the Piraeans but without results, and the match ended in a tie.

The Cranes were disappointed by the result, but the Scovern-Eldmark tie at 0-0 allowed the Cranes to survive. Coach Cheruene called the game a missed opportunity to ensure a Lavanan victory, as Lavana faces tougher opponents in Scovern and Eldmark. A win would had ensured the Cranes a good footing to pass to the next round. Anar Bounvanati stated the need for more coordination, and practice but called the result regrettable, with captain Shara Soulignavong stating that more work is needed to ensure the younger players are involved in the game. Other than that, words were few and far between as the team headed back to their hotel.

The Cranes are favorites in the tournament and expected to pass Group D with few hiccups. However this result seems to have humbled the cranes, we’re sure practice tomorrow will see to counter the problems encountered by the Cranes as they move forward in the tournament. The Cranes prepare for their upcoming match with the squad of Eldmark which tied against Scovern with no goals per side. At the moment Lavana and Piraea positions themselves in front of the group, the next game is a must win, if Lavana aims for an easy pathway to the next round. Piraea and Scovern face each other as well, with bets on Scovern to secure a win, although Piraeas recent performance against Lavana must worry the Scovern squad.

Ajahadya Defeats Rizealand 3-1
The Greatest Upset so far at the Women's World Cup; do the Tigers have more in them?

Stade Shumba Kadu -

Today saw the greatest upset of the Women's World Cup so far as Ajahadya won a decisive 3-1 triumph over Rizealand. Rizealand, which has consistently been ranked among the best six teams in the Women's World Cup, drifting between 4th, 5th and 6th depending on which analyst one listens to, came into the match as the favourites to win by a wide margin. By contrast, Ajahadya has occasionally been ranked among the worst five of the teams at the WWC, and many experienced coaches from well-established sides considered Anisha Sunda's highly unorthodox 2-5-3 formation, nicknamed as 'The Crab' by some disparaging commentators, to be more of a media stunt for attention than an actual, workable tactical formation.

Yet in its first outing on the international stage, the extremely aggressive formation has seemingly proven its worth over the defensive stance that many commentators had expected. In the first three minutes, Ajahadya's extremely aggressive formation and playstyle paid dividends, with one goal attempt followed swiftly by a hard save by the Rizealand goalkeeper. Ajahadya dominated the pitch until Anasuya Khainwar finally found a breach in Rizealand's defence and scored a goal from outside the penalty box twelve minutes in.

The early goal seemingly roused the Rizealand side from a stupor; this game would not be as easy as one might expect from the vast difference in rankings. The Asterian side recovered and took back control of the match for almost the next half-hour, Chiodi eventually scoring a header from a corner at the 39th minute to equalize.

Ever on the offensive, Ajahadya rapidly counter-attacked as half-time approached, and a poor tackle from brhind from Rizealand's defender Graham that brought down Khainwar saw a red card awarded and a penalty given, which Khainwar promptly scored.

As the second half kicked off, and with Rizealand down a player, Ajahadya smelled blood in the water. With a gap in Rizealand's defence from Graham's absence, Asis Bhukar was able to land a third shot on goal in the 52nd minute, bringing the score to 3-1. Rather than continuing the offense, Ajahadya dropped back soon afterwards, adopting a far more defensive stance and despite spirited attacks by Rizealand, with Burdak saving some shots while others hit the posts, the Ajahadyan defence was able to hold firm until full time, leaving the final score at Ajahadya 3, Rizealand 1.

The early victory will no doubt have bouyed the confidence and morale of the Tigers, as their defeat of what was believed to be the favourite side to win in Group F means the way to the knock-outs, which once seemed to be so far away to them, now looms far, far closer.

Ocelots Victorious In First Pool Match

The Ocelots celebrate after Becker's second goal against Kuthina.

The Ocelots have come out firing in their first pool match of the 2022 IFF Women's Football World Cup, beating Kuthina 2-1 to sit first equal with fellow Asteria Inferior nation Gapolania at the top of Group H.

The match was played at the Stade de Liberté in Mambiza, the Garamburan capital, in front of what most people would admit was a fairly empty stadium. But this didn't deter the Ocelots, who managed to make the most of the tropical heat to put themselves in a good position for the next match.

Although expected to be an imbalanced match between Nuvania and relative minnows Kuthina, the game was more equal than anticipated, with the Coian side showing they had potential to bring down bigger and better teams. The Kuthinan side was about finding gaps and exploitation of holes in the Nuvanian defence, and this factored into the early goal nine minutes into the game, with star attack Sarit putting the ball through the legs of Ocelots goalkeeper Kaelee Daniels. This put Nuvania into a more aggressive mood, and knowing they had the stamina and the experience in playing tropical conditions, allowed them to dominate the rest of the game.

Nuvania's chance to equal the match came in the 22nd minute of the game, when a Kuthinan defender attempted to put a stop to a run up the right side Ocelots midfielder Melissa Bosman was making, bringing Bosman down. The resulting yellow card was the second of the match for the player after an earlier incident in relation to the Kuthinan goal, and this prompted the Ocelots to fire back, with attacker Saskia Becker slamming the penalty kick into the back of the net.

Half time brought a revitalised Ocelot side back out onto the field, who were more than able to make up for the lost time owing to early wobbles at the beginning of the game. However, despite domination of possession during the second half of the game, the Ocelots struggled to set up opportunities for goals, a problem not helped by dogged Kuthinan defence. A series of exchanges in the 71st minute lead to a chance for Becker, who planted the ball past the Kuthinian goalkeeper for Nuvania's second goal of the game, and the one that clinched the first pool match.

Team coach Colm Ó Siadhail said that the Ocelots had done well against a side they had not played against before, and while they had some teething troubles in the early part of the game, they had "found their feet" by the second half.
"The Kuthinans played really well," he said. "But it was evident that the heat was getting to them in the second half and that it was playing to our advantage." He praised the Ocelots for their performance, saying that he was confident the team was well placed to take on both Gapolania and Senria.
"I'm feeling very good about the final pool matches."

Player of the match, Saskia Becker, said that she was "extremely pleased" with the result, saying that the team had "come into their own" during the game and that she was looking forwards to the matches against Gapolania and Senria.
"There's a little bit of work to do," he said. "But I think that we're ready for what the other two have in store for us."

Gapolania also stamped its mark on the competition, emerging victorious over Senria one-nil in the other Group H match. Elsewhere in the competition, Satavia managed an upset over Gaullica, forcing the football giants to a three all draw in what Satavia has called "possibly the best football game the country has ever played". In Group E, Vinalia lost 6-2 to Champenia, with Sainte-Chloé losing 3-0 to Hennehouwe. Group G saw further losses for Asteria Inferior, with Satucin losing 1-0 to Bistravia, and Aucuria losing 3-0 to Shangea.

The results meant that Nuvania's 2-1 victory over Kuthina is currently one of only two victories shared by the six Asteria Inferior nations competing in the World Cup, and the largest victory of pool play of any team on the continent so far.

Team captain Lara Skinner said that she was "surprised" to hear about the achievement, but said that it was still early in the competition. However, she was happy about the team's achievement.
"Just goes to show that surprises come when you least expect them."

Ajahadya Qualifies For Round of 16
The Tigers become the first Ajahadyan football team to make it to the knockouts at any World Cup

Maucha -

Yesterday the Ajahadyan women's football team became the first Ajahadyan football team to make it through the group stages to the knockouts following a 1-0 victory over Cassier to qualify second in Group F. The qualification comes after a wild group stage, with Ajahadya triumphing 3-1 over Rizealand to win their first match and defeat the team that was held as the favourite to win the group and routinely ranked as one of the best teams in the contest before losing in a 6-0 massacre to Kesselbourg, who would go on to qualify in first place undefeated.

Anisha Sunda, the team's head coach, said that the qualification 'showed that Ajahadyan women's football can tangle with and beat Northern heavyweights like Rizealand despite the vast differences in funding and governmental support.'

'Women's sport has always been underfunded compared to men's in Ajahadya, but despite that we've still been able to be the first Ajahadyan team to get past a group stage at a world cup.' She added, with a notable hint of pride to her voice.

However, given Ajahadya's next match in the round of 16, it seems that the journey of the Tigers is likely to be cut short as they are to play Caldia.

'We're up against Caldia, who are the best team here, frankly.' Sunda said when asked about her view of the upcoming match. 'But we never expected to make it past the group stages. Getting here is in and of itself an accomplishment. I'm proud of the team, no matter what comes next.'

When asked if she felt if the Ajahadyan team could win, Sunda said 'We beat Rizealand decisively in a 3-1. If we can do that to Rizealand, who's to say we can't do that to Caldia? We caught Rizealand off-guard, which Kesselbourg took the right message from in the next match. They knew not to underestimate us. Caldia, though? After smashing through their group scoring three or more goals each game against heavyweights like Soravia and Kirenia? They just might make the same mistake, no matter what their coaches and captain say.'

'Against Caldia, this will be either a miracle or a massacre for us. There's no awkward middle here.'

Ajahadya's defeat of Rizealand was by many metrics, a miracle. Whether the Tigers can pull a second miracle we can only wait and see.

Caldia prepares for next stages of Women's Coupe du monde as Group of 16 approaches
SPORT by Stíofán Ó Muineaog

Garamburra & Maucha – The Caldish wome's national football team is gearing up for the next stage of this year's IFF Feminine Coupe du monde. Tomorrow, the Caldish team will face off with Ajahadya as the tournament enters its next stage. The Group of 16 matches are set to kick off the knockout stage of the coupe.

Thus far, the Caldish women's team has been undefeated. Caldia beat Montecara 3-1 before besting Soravia 4-1 and giving Kirenia their only loss, after a tense 5-4 match. Caldia dominated in the group stages and qualified for the finals before the third match against Kirenia was played. The team hopes to continue this trend, aiming to knock Ajahadya out of the tournament.

The team has demonstrated its aggressive skill, exciting fans from around the world. In the games against Montecara and Soravia, Caldia battered their opponents and ran up the score. The match against Kirenia saw the most resistance, but Caldia's second string was playing as the team had already secured their spot in the next stage. In total, Caldia has scored 12 goals against its rivals, putting the team at the forefront of the contest. Two of its players, Rut Dunaid and Saorla Talmhach are leading for goals scored. Dunaid, the team's capitain, has scored 3 goals. Talmhach, Caldia's youngest player, is among the five players throughout the coupe to have scored 4. Sìneag Sùdrach ⁊ Todt also sank 3 goals at this stage of the competition, Together, they account for 10 of Caldia's 12 goals.

Team manager Ailleann Ní Breislin has said she is confident in the prospects of her team.

"We have seen this team play with incredible skill against some of the best teams competing in this tournament. All members of our team should be incredibly proud of the skill they are demonstrating, from our starters to our alternates. I am so proud of this team".

Dunaid, who has announced her intent to retire from the sport after the 2022 Summer Invictus Games, praised her teammates and mentioned she was "so impressed by football's newest generation".

"This team is unstoppable. I am so proud to be playing alongside some of the best women in this sport. Some of our youngest members are showing us all what they are made of. I am so impressed by football's newest generation and cannot wait to see what they accomplish".

Ní Breislin, who is leading the team for her second coupe, said that the Caldish team is "confident" in their abilities and "will not let up any time soon".

"The control of the field and aggressive runs on goal that we have seen so far are things we will keep seeing. This team will not let up any time soon, they are ready to take this title home".

Caldia's millions of devoted fans are preparing for tomorrow's match with anticipation. Thousands have flown to Bahia to attend the coupe in person. Millions more will tune on from home. After the Caldish men's team found unexpected success at the 2019 coupe, fans are eager to see the women's team clinch their fifth title.

A FIFTH TITLE?

Caldia's women's team has won 4 previous coupes, which their last victory in 2013. The team failed was knocked out at the semi-finals by Satucin. However, they went on to take gold at the 2018 Summer Invictus Games. Their strong performance thus far has left many hopeful that the team will bring home their fourth IFF title from this year's contest.

The Caldish team is among the strongest women's teams in the world and has the most IFF coupe titles of any team. In addition to their 2013 victory, Caldia won the 1993, 1997, and 2005 contests.

Unlike many other countries, the Caldish women's domestic football league dominates the sport. As such, the women's football receives more funding and attention. This unique football culture has contributed to the team's historic successes. Women footballers from all over the world have moved to Caldia for the sport, something the team reflects.

The raw talent and domineering strength shown by the team so far has left fans anticipating a new title. Should Caldia win this year's coupe, they would overtake the Gaullican men's team and become the team with the most IFF titles in history. At present, both teams have 4 titles.

However, the men's coupe began in 1939 and there have been 19 tournaments since. The IFF women's coupe only began in 1989. The 2021 coupe is the ninth contest. Should Caldia clinch its fifth title, it would have won a majority of the contests.

AS SHANGEA ENTERS THE NEXT ROUND, CAN THE MOMENTUM BE MAINTAINED?
Deng Yazhou

Zhang Meilin at the match against Bistravia

NAMBABI - The 2021 IFF Feminine Coupe du monde has so far been very good for Shangea which alongside Champania and Caldia is tied for the moment as the team with the highest point score. In all three matches Shangea has played - against Satucin, Aucuria and Bistravia - our girls have decisively defeated the opposition, most notably in a nail-biting match between Shangea and Bistravia where after a tense first half our team managed to prevail against a spirited challenge.

Manager Yin Huiqing said she was "very happy" to see Shangea advance to the next stage. The womens team in Shangea has generally performed better then the male team historically, although by global standards both fall behind Euclean and Asterian competitors. It has been pointed out Shangea hasn't won decisively in any of their matches, surely a concern going forward.

The next match will see Shangea face off against Amathia, whose mediocre team is known for its thuggish demeanour and its fans amongst the worst hooligans in Euclea. Defender Dai Qingzhao has stated that "we hope to beat Amathia fair and square and continue to advance in the tournament".

One win and two ties send Amathia into the Round of Sixteen
Amathia's National Women's Football Team progresses into the Round of Sixteen of the Coupe du monde from the second place in their group

Women's football in Amathia has a pretty turbulent history that not many take into account when talking about the team. Unlike the beginnings of football itself in the country, with its royalist origins and Gaullican influence, women's football was unheard of until the 1950's and was clearly a product of the egalitarian ideologies of councilism and later equalism. The support of the regime for the women's national team is what turned it into one of the biggest contenders in the Euclean tournaments of the era, competing with many other socialist teams. While sports were in general a big objective of the regime and a way to showcase socialism's superiority in front of other countries, the women's game had a special position that helped finance its growth and popularity. This in turn led to a strong association with the regime and with its politics that turned into a stigma later on, and even today, there are people who refuse to even consider supporting or watching our girls play - for political reasons. Funding was almost entirely cut off following the revolution, and the team crashed. Despite the best efforts of the players at the time, including the near legendary "Queen of Amathian Football" Ruxandra Răducanu, the decline was clear and pronounced. A living, surviving and evolving team of football, especially a national team, needs new players and new talents to be constantly found and developed, and the closing of most of our country's football academies in the 1980's was almost like a death sentence. The decline was visible in men's football also, but the investors and the supporters did not abandon them - our girls were however almost entirely abandoned.

And this is what I feel makes our women's national team special. While we as a country have abandoned them - they have not abandoned Amathia. All the players from the last generation of female players from before the fall of Equalism remained in the country, continued to play for local clubs here, and tried to support women's football however they could. It's their efforts that have saved the team, especially considering that by 1985, the Federation was planning to disband it completely.

After the team's survival was ensured, a slow development was what followed. Once among the best teams in the world, now our girls were among the worst in Euclea, a situation that continued throughout the 1990's. When you cut development of your young players like that, the recovery is always slow. Even a generation of players lost could be catastrophic - and women's football in Amathia lost almost three entire generations. But with perseverance, efforts, and a slow but certain and constant increase of funding - this led to results. Modest results, but results nonetheless. Still, their popularity remained low. Something needed to happen in order for women's football to abandon its stigma and to win back the hearts of Amathians, and that happened in the early 2000's, after the "Incident" at the Royal Arena during the derby between Regala Cluzia and Astrul Arciluco. The fighting between different groups of ultras, which got out of control, shocked the country and made waves even abroad. It was then that Adelina Pârvulescu, the captain of the women's national team at the time, took a strong stance against the ultras in a televised interview. Her stance - that those using violence and racism in the stands are cowards who are a stain upon the "beautiful game", earned her the lifelong ire of the ultras, but the respect of the more reasonable fans. That was a turning point. While the men's team has constantly remained opposed to the violence of its fans, its inability to control the groups of ultras has damaged its reputation ever since, while the women's team has slowly but certainly become a more reasonable alternative for those who wish to support and to enjoy football away from fanaticism and violence. And these days, as Amathia entered its second consecutive Feminine Coupe du monde - the country's attention and support was with our girls.

Of course, even the current level of support and funding is nothing to compared to what other states can muster. Champania's national team, their victories and progress have been a particular reason for jealousy, reminding people of the times when Amathia's women's team was neck and neck with the team of our neighbor, but the efforts of our girls are still to be appreciated. The victory against Sohar was clear and it was expected, but the draw against Paretia was a great effort and a great game - taking into consideration the fact that Paretians are objectively a better team and one well known for its offensive brand of football. The goals scored by Antonescu and by Baicu were great. The draw against Garambura was a shame, but football is often a game of luck and of chance - and chance just wasn't with us that night. It was however a difficult game, with the Garamburans enjoying their home or near-home advantage. Progressing into the Round of 16 was our team's declared objective from before the beginning of the tournament - but we have no reason to simply stop here. These were the feelings evoked by Marin Rednic, the manager of Amathia's National Women's Football Team.

"Being placed in a position to face Shangea is not a moment of great luck for our girls, as this is going to be a difficult game.", he commented during a press conference today. "Shanghea is according to the statistics and the ranking a slightly better team than us, and they've also had an excellent tournament so far, so we must congratulate them. We would have obviously loved to have an easier game ahead of us, but still, we're going to give it our all. We want to reach the quarters, or maybe even the semifinals. When the luck is against you in the draws, you simply have to make your own luck out on the pitch.", he continued, smiling. "What I know for certain and what I can promise our fans is that the entire team, the girls and the staff, will put all their effort and their souls into this game."

Journalists also asked the manager for an opinion of the comments of the Shangean press, leading to some hesitation from Rednic. "Considering the events of the last men's world cup I am not blaming the Shangeans for their opinion on our country's football fans, although I do feel that it is a shame that they have lumped us together. Both of our country's football teams have distanced themselves from the behavior of those ultras, and our girls have especially always had a strong position against violence, hooliganism and racism. There is no place for those groups of ultras in the stadiums were our team plays, and I am confident that there will be no issues whatsoever during this game, much like there have been no issues with the behavior of our fans since the beginning of this tournament.", the coach declared. "As for us being a mediocre team, that might be true, but our girls will still do their best on the pitch during the game. We're of course also hoping to beat Shangea fair and square and to advance as far into the tournament as we can, but regardless of the game's result we hope to have a good and fun game that both the teams and the fans can enjoy."

ROUND OF 16

Image

The game was tougher than both sides expected. Throughout the whole 90 minutes, and over time, no one managed to break through and put their team ahead. Maucha and Gapolania exchanged sparks, as the game was a constant back and forth between attack and defense. The goalkeepers are the highlight, as both Thumeka Dana and Lidia Nermali guarded their nets with their lives. The offense of both teams was on point as well; while Marotta and Giorgiù were a headache to the Mauchan defense, Hawa was also unbalancing things on the Mauchan left flank. Every mistake was punished by the opposition arming attacking plays that would often end with an attempt. However, the goals were stubborn and the game went to a penalties shootout. Gapolania kicked the first penalty with Giorgiù, but it was denied by Dana, while Maucha's first penalty was converted by Nadia. Gapolania made up for the missed goal in the second penalty with Marotta, while Mondise missed for Maucha. Gapolania followed for their third kick with Lucià, but the post was there to save Maucha, who scored their second penalty with Dalila. The fourth Gapolanian kick by di Zeta was, again, saved by Dana, which put her opponents in a tough spot: if Maucha scores, its over. As Hawa walked towards the penalty mark, both teams waited nervously. Finally, Hawa kicked the ball and, though Nermali touched it with the tips of her fingers, it was not enough to keep Maucha from advancing onto the quarter-finals of the Women World Cup for the first time in their history.

POTM: Thumeka Dana

What to say about one of the title contesters of this year's coupe? Champania did not come to play football, but to teach how to do so. Champania left little room for Scovern to breath, as they 3-nil against the northern Euclean side by half-time. Though Scovern sketched a reaction by the 61st minute with Justesen, Champania came back strong to increase their lead on the 72nd minute with Carpentièr and on the 85th minute with Murràs. The odds were fair, and the expected was then confirmed: Champania advances onto the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup.

POTM: Felise Carpentièr

The underdogs Ajahadya facing the ultimate favorites Caldia? What a piece of football art that is! So much expectation and so much anticipation from all watchers and enjoyers of the beautiful game for this match. From the beginning, Ajahadya showed no fear of the Caldians, as they went for their typical offensive style from the beginning. However, taking big risks against experienced and talented opponents may be one's own doom and, though Caldia seemed to struggle at first, they broke the marker in the 29th minute with Baldacci's first goal in this coupe. Caldia then came to increase their lead up to 3-0 by the mid-second half, while Bhukar did not let Ajahadya go down without shaking their opponents at least once, scoring the Satrian's only goal in the match on the 74th minute. While the score shows a two goals difference, Caldia's effectiveness when scoring was needed was the main reason why the Eucleans proceeded to the quarter-finals instead of Ajahadya. The Satrian team wasted a few crucial chances that could have given the game a much different outcome but those are lessons learned for their next appearance in the Women's World Cup as they are going home early for Caldia to advance onto the next stage.

POTM: Mia Baldacci

Attitude towards your opponent is key for a team's success in a competition. Earlier today, an article by a Shangean website referred to Amathia as "mediocre" and "thuggish." Well, the Amathian team decided to bring that onto the field and show what they are made of. Initially, Shangea seemed to be on high heels, thinking that the match was already won as they enjoyed enormous amounts of ball possession and a few goal attempts within the majority of the first half. However, the ice bath came on the 38th minute as Antonescu scored Amathia's first goal in the match following a corner kick. Shangea was caught by surprise and decided to try and be more vertical and objective with their attacks, but it was not enough to keep Amathia from scoring their second goal in the 65th minute with Barbu during a counter-attack play. As the Amathians (and some Senrians) supporters went crazy on the stands, Amathia seemed to have proven beyond their mediocracy. In the 78th minute, a corner kick saw Shangea putting their goal in with a header by defender Xiang. Shangea came to score a second goal with Yi in the 87th minute, but a slight (and controversial) handball had the goal disallowed by the VAR. As the final whistle came by, Amathia celebrated with the Senrian supporters in the stand, and the girls on the pitch ran to one another for celebration as Amathia passed onto the quarte-finals of the Women's World Cup.

POTM: Rahela Antonescu

ROUND OF 16

Image

The match started at a slow pace, as both teams seemed cautious and studious about each other. Aucuria seemed to care about keeping up their momentum following their victory against Bistravia on the group stage as they slowly took charge of the actions of the game. In the 41st minute, the prize for Aucuria's early effort was paid when Kobuševskienė converted a corner kick into the Asterians' first goal of the match; the first half ended as perfectly as it could be for the Asterians. As the second half began, Paretia seemed to have woken up after a good stern talk in the vestroom. Carbonell came back from the break with a scary passing efficiency and movements that the Aucurian team did not see from the Euclean side. The Eucleans did right in changing their stance in the game, as they turned the score around in less than 10 minutes with goals by Moleiro and Carbonell herself. Aucuria did not back down, and they kept pouncing Paretia and attempting to score enough to take the game to overtime, at least. When the referee was about to whistle the end of the game, Grikšaitė did the unimaginable! She dribbled 2 defenders on the right flank and managed to miraculously score Aucuria's tying goal. With Paretia stunned and Aucuria over their head, the game proceeded to overtime. When the referee allowed the first half of the overtime to begin, it took 4 minutes for Paretia to score a corner kick goal with Paretian defender Santinho. Aucuria tried running after the score, still believing that they would repeat their doings of the regular time, but a counter-attack by the Eucleans saw the Paretian top scorer, Cândida Vizeu scoring Paretia's 4th goal in the match. Aucuria seemed clearly exhausted and mentally beaten after the Eucleans opened a 2 goals advantage before halftime. At the end of the first half of overtime, Safira Egas, who subbed for Marisol Gutiérrez, scored her first goal in the competition to seal Paretia's spot in the quarter-finals against the hosts, Maucha.

POTM: Margarida Carbonell

Image

Akin to the match from earlier, both teams started the game and played the first half with cautiousness not to make any mistakes and jeopardize their chances of advancing. The biggest event of the first half was a penalty kick given to Soravia but wrongly revoked by the VAR. A lot of complaints and controversies arose from the wrong decision of the referees, but the game kept on going. In the second half, the slower pace was maintained, with Kesselbourg having a slightly more ball possession than Soravia. In the 63rd minute, a free-kick by the Kesselbourgish team saw the ball hitting the post and, luckily enough, rebounding on Soravian defender Shaposhnikova and rolling inside the goal to put Kesselbourg ahead. Their own goal was not enough to shake Soravia's spirit, as they quickly tied the game up in the 68th with Muzkya, the Soravian ultimate goal scorer in this competition. With the score tied up 1-1, both teams now seemed to be more into attacking. Kesselbourg tried being more vertical while attacking, but Soravia's defense was very well-armed. However, de Mesmaeker found a gap in the Soravian defense to kick the ball from outside the box to score a beautiful goal and put Kesselbourg back ahead on the score. However, a frontal free-kick favoring Soravia in the 91st minute saw two Soravian players arguing about who was going to kick it. Muzkya and attacking-midfielder Lyasina spent about a minute or two arguing and Muzkya decided to let Lyasina kick. Lyasina promised, and she delivered; the kick was indefensible for the Kesselbourgish goalie, and the score was 2-2. Going into OT, the score was kept the same, and the decision was taken to penalties. The coin toss decided that Kesselbourg would kick first. De Mesmaeker and Muzkya both converted the first kick. Speelers and Lyasina also delivered the second kick. Verstraete hit the post, while Bebchuk converted it. The advantage earned by Soravia was soon equalized by Kesselbourge as Walravens scored, and Čierna's kick was saved by the goalie. Van den Borre and Lapteva both scored the fifth kick and, since the regular kicks ended 4-4, the golden goal was on. Jessie Van De Gucht walked towards the goal and shot straight above the post, giving Soravia a chance to score and move on to the quarter-finals. Madona Iashvili walked up to the penalty spot and, with great category, scored the goal to put Soravia in the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup against Champania.

POTM: Orina Lyasina

Unlike the past two games of today, this one was not as balanced. Lavana was on top of their game from the beginning, and they scored the first goal in the 12th minute with Ablaivo. The remainder of the first half saw Hennenhouwe closing back their defense, and seemingly trying to build attacks out of Lavana's mistakes. However, Lavana was effective to keep the ball, but their attackers could not find gaps to pounce the opponent. A couple of long shots were attempted throughout the rest of the first half, but the score by halftime was Lavana 1-nil. When the game started again, the possession was initially Hennenhouwe's, but a pass interception by Yeldosoa allowed her to put Bounvanati in front of the goal to score 2-nil right on the 46th minute. After the game had just restarted, Yeldosoa ran after the passes, who were slowly kicking it back to the center-backs so that they could assist in organizing the team. A slow and sloppy pass was easily intercepted by Yeldosoa again, who ran alone to score a goal by nutmegging Hennenhouwe's goalkeeper and put the Couians ahead 3-nil. Hennenhouwe's only response came with Bolks in the 72nd minute, but no Euclean effort was enough to keep Lavana from advancing to the quarter-finals to face Caldia.

POTM: Aolani Yeldosoa

Image

Sometimes, the stars on the pitch are not the strikers, but the goalies. Both halves were 0-0, and it all goes through both teams' goalkeepers, who were monumental in the match, taking it to overtime. Right at the beginning of the first half of overtime, de Klerk scored for Satavia after a beautiful series of triangulations. However, Nuvania replied right after, in the 94th minute, with Skinner scoring out of a free-kick. By the 104th minute, van der Linde made a run and passed 5 opponents before scoring a beautiful comeback goal for Satavia. As the halftime approached, Satavia's only duty was to hold a furious Nuvania back and, unfortunately for one, but luckily for another, Satavia failed. In the 127th minute, Nuvania's winger Bosman headed the ball as fast as a bullet into the back of the net, equalizing the game and pushing it into penalty kicks. The shootout began with Satavia, but both Satavia and Nuvania had their first three kicks defended by both goalies. It was not until van Ryneveld kicked the fourth Satavian penalty and scored to put the Dolphins ahead. Libbie Clement went for Nuvania's fourth kick, but her kick went higher than it should have, completely missing the goal. It was all on the feet of Jacomie Jouberts to score and send Satavia forward into the quarter-finals, or on the hands of Kaelee Daniels to defend and keep Nuvania alive. Jouberts charged towards the ball and kicked on the opposite foot of the Nuvanian goalie, scoring Satavia's second goal and sending the Dolphins onto the quarter-finals to face Amathia.

POTM: Henrietta de Jaager

Fans confident of Caldia's chances of making it to the semi-finals ahead of match with Lavana
SPORT by Sláine Nic Ciardha

Garamburra & Maucha – As Caldia's women's team gears up for tomorrow's game, the team's fans are excited about the road ahead. After their 3-1 victory over Ajahadya, Caldia will play Lavana.

Lavana, who have only two matches compared to Caldia's four, has emerged as an underdog since beating the Hennish team 3-1. Despite this, Caldish fans are confident for their team's prospects. The Caldish women are considered to be among the fiercest of teams at the competition. Their four coupe titles and undefeated record at this year's tournament have left them as the Goliath.

After defeating Ajahadya 3-1, prospects against Lavana feel good to many.

"I would say that we shouldn't be cocky, and I respect [Lavana], but we just have the team with the skill needed to advance" said Pádhraic Ó Flaitile, a fan from Shercock.

"We can do this, and I know that they will. I am more interested to see who wins the Soravia-Champania match if I am honest" Noirin Nic Thighearnáin said. "Those are the other two teams who are on our level. Based on who comes out of that match, we know who we have to face in the finals".

While many devoted fans follow the intricacy of the sport, others show their devotion in other ways.

"I'll be down the pub with most everyone I know" 73 year-old said Áine Nic Cathail, who is a grandmother of six.

Over a million fans are expected to tune in for tomorrow's match against Lavana. Thousands of fans have arrived here to attend the game at the Stade de Liberte.

As Caldia gets deeper into the contest, support from the fans is projected to grow. This has been the trend in years past.

Caldia plays Lavana tomorrow in the quarter-finals. Paretia and host Maucha are set to face each other, with the victor advancing to the semi-finals alongside what could be Caldia. At the other end of the tournament, Amathia and Satavia play while the highly anticipated game between Champania and Soravia will take place.

SEMI FINALS

Image

Sometimes the score of a game does not translate what was seen on the pitch. Maucha, who was dominant in most of their matches throughout the competition, did not keep the pace up today against Lavana, allowing the Cranes to maintain their momentum. Though Lavana did not have their best start during the group stage, they slowly pieced themselves together and got to even send the Caldians home earlier than everybody expected. Both teams worked hard to arrive in the semi-finals, but only one seemed to play. Fairly enough, Maucha has never been this far in a world cup, and the Lavan team knew how to take advantage of the Bahians' inexperience. Lavana had many attempts, and they ended the game with over 70% ball possession, but the Mauchan defense worked a lot too. Despite Lavanan dominance, the two Mauchan center-backs were of great service, keeping the Cranes from scoring multiple times. As the attackers were constantly neutralized, Lavana counted on defender Thammasith to head the ball in the goal in the 66th minute and put Lavana in the finals of the 2021 Women World Cup! Given the Lavanan offensive inefficiency and the Mauchan defensive performance, Christiane Lexer was elected the best player of the match.

POTM: Christiane Lexer

The representatives of Group A came a long way as the underdogs of the knockout stage but stopped in the semi-finals. Satavia was surprised a lot throughout this competition; they showed persistence and perseverance throughout the competition, resisting tiring comebacks, overtimes, and penalties shootouts. Champania, on the other hand, has been showing since the beginning why they are favorites to win this competition. They controlled matches and won their way up to the semi-finals. The match, however, was a surprise to everybody as Satavian midfielder Brown scored in the 6th minute. The Asterian party would last little, as Vancoppenòlle tied things up in the 10th minute. Things were going head to head until Raspinejas scored in the 18th minute and Penhs in the 25th minute. With the half-time score of 3-1, the Satavian team seemed to feel the stress and tiredness that they accumulated throughout the competition. They could not uphold a good game, and Champania promptly took advantage of that. Carpentièr (twice) and Jarossia sealed the Euclean victory by the score of 6-1, putting them in the finals of the 2021 Women World Cup against Lavana! Due to their resilience showed on the pitch, summed to her attacking prowess now and throughout the competition, the youngster Adelaida Raspienjas was chosen as the player of the match.

POTM: Adelaida Raspienjas

Lavana headed to the Finals!
Nambabi -

Lavana defeated earlier today the hosts and underdogs Maucha, at the Coupe du Monde. A thrilling match, which could have gone both ways numerous times, culminated in a minute 66 header by Thammasith for the passage to the finals. The Cranes, which had proven to be in a tricky position all tournament, have defeated Caldia for the first time in their history, and defeated an eager Mauchan squad to gain a passage to the Finals for the first time in history. Lavana had reached the Semi-finals once in 2009 when it lost to eventual champions Kirenia 3-1, finishing in 4th place after a 1-0 defeat to Rizealand. Thammasith had been the sole goal back in the semi-finals against Kirenia, creating a sense of redemption for the Cranes as they made their first trip to the finals. Champania is on its first trip to the finals too, after having defeated Satavia in a thrilling match.

“We’re excited that we’ve gotten so far” exclaimed Aolani Yeldoso the youngest member of the team, who kicked the ball eventually reaching Thammasiths head for the goal. Shara Soulignavong the captain of the team said that they were satisfied with beating Caldia, and said victory in the semi-finals and the finals are extras to an awesome run. History might be on Lavanas side, as teams that defeat the Caldians tend to win the championship. “We like our odds” remarked Baizhan Vidimhe, who’s been essential to preserving Lavana in the tournament.

Premier Laina Keomany has expressed that she will be traveling to Nambabi to watch the game, and congratulated the Cranes on their historic run. “The nation is proud, and happy of what has been accomplished in Maucha” remarked a press statement by the Premier.

Lavana and Champania have never met previously in an official tournament, having met 3 times in friendlies in recent years. With Lavana winning one game in 2013 3-2 in Pers, and drawing two times in 2018 2-2 in Brigançon, and 1-1 in Liucpa. Coach Dazeda Cheruene has praised the staunch Champanian offense, and says the Champanians are “wizards” of scoring. But praised Lavanas staunch defense, and their own wizardry to score goals. “We’re a strong team, we’re a coordinated team, but most importantly we know how to play football, and play it well.” remarked Cheruene. The match is set for the 1st of December, and many are looking forward to the game.
